Bizarre finder alphabetization behavior

Aside from possibly butchering a made-up word, I am having a bit of an issue. I am finding that screenshots taken in the AM are showing up /after/ screenshots taken in the PM. I thought I had correctly determined and solved this issue with the help of some advice to change the settings to XX:XX for timestamps but I am still seeing this kind of behavior with the second listed right after the other even though A obviously comes after P.
Screen shot 2011-11-01 at 04.07.34 PM.png
Screen shot 2011-11-01 at 09.44.18 AM.png
This makes it hard to find a shot just taken in the PM because it gets mixed up in front of shots taken in the AM. I use this utility quite a bit so it is something I obviously wouldn't mind tackling.
What am I missing?
Thanks.

The reason for that is that (with all due respect to it) the OS is a simple idiot. It can follow simple instructions well, but not overly complex ones. The OS has a global instruction for alphabetizing lists to start with the first character and proceed one by one to the right, comparing each file with the others in the array, and sorting in alphanumeric order. It does not look ahead to 'see' the AM or PM which appears later (further to the right) in the string.
There is a solution.
Go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats.
Click the "Customize" button in the Times section. You'll see this screen -
In each of the four arrays near the top (Short, Medium, etc.) click the tiny triangle in the first item, the one representing the hour. You'll see this dropmenu appear -
Select either of the third or fourth items, 0-23 or 00-23. Do that for all four of the arrays, then OK the window.
This will change the timestamp to 24-hour format, which will be incorporated into the filename for the screenshot, and this will keep those items in proper order.
Since AM/PM is not needed with 24-hour time notation, you can also remove that from the arrays if you wish.
Note - this will not change the display of the time as shown in the menubar claock. YOu can have that display 12-hour time with AM/PM. or 24-hour time without AM/PM independent of the change made above. The clock's display mode is set in System Preferences > Date & Time > Clock.
Edit - - unfortunately, files which have already been named will not be changed; only new screenshots will incorporte the 24-hour time in their naming.

  • .DS_Store bug causing bizarre Finder behavior

I've been having problems with icons disappearing in windows or becoming low-resolution. I can resolve it by using Onyx to delete the .DS_Store files within the affected directories, but it keeps happening. When this happened most recently I downloaded an update to Onyx and attempted to replace the old copy in Utilities by dragging over the new copy; the Finder asked me to authenticate, I did, and then I got this error:
"operation cannot be completed because backup items cannot be modified"
I don't have Time Machine enabled, how is this possible? I tried to delete it manually, and I got the same error again. I renamed the old copy of Onyx, proceeded with copying over the new version, and then ran the .DS_Store deletion on /Applications. After the deletion completed, I tried deleting the old copy of Onyx again, and was able to.

Something's wrong if you have to keep deleting the .DS_Store. It also isn't resolving the issue.
I'd tend to think about LaunchServices for the icon issues. Since you already are using OnyX try deleting LaunchSerives cahces and see what the result it.
It have no idea about the backup message unless it saw the old version as a backup or a version.
But then who knows with all default .DS_Store restores.
If that doesn't clear it up my next step would be to boot into your Recovery Volume and reinstall Lion (the re-install is "in place" so it won't effect your users or settings.)

  • Bizarre system font behavior

My PB G4 15" running Tiger has become nearly unusable. The bizarre behavior is that the words in the topmost menu have replaced every letter with a capital "A" surrounded by a box. So the top of my screen has the exact number of letters for each menu item and can drop down the appropriate list, but that list is also filled with words spelled by the same image, an A with a box around it. My desktop icons also have unreadable names. Also, when in Finder, the names of files and folders have same thing, as well as contextual menus.
However, in Finder List view, I can see the names of files and folders. Also, some dialog boxes are unreadable but others aren't. I can use applications, but just can't read the menu bar when they're up.
I would archive and reinstall, but I've lost my Tiger DVDs to Katrina. I've run disk first aid from my older 10.3 and it repairs although it noted improper leaf issues. I thought maybe a different system font was used for those items compared to different system fonts for other items (ie, why can I see names in list view but not icon or navigator view?). Cleared font cache.
Anybody have a clue about how to fix this without booting from Tiger CD. Hate to buy the thing twice. Already have to replace a house.

It sounds like you're missing a System font required for proper display of the Finder. Here are all the fonts that Mac OS X requires:
    Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
    AppleGothic.dfont
    AquaKanaBold.otf
    AquaKanaRegular.otf
    Courier.dfont
    Geneva.dfont
    Helvetica.dfont
    Keyboard.dfont
    LastResort.dfont
    LucidaGrande.dfont
    Monaco.dfont
    Osaka.dfont
    OsakaMono.dfont
    Symbol.dfont
    Times.dfont
    ZapfDingbats.dfont
They're located in /System/Library/Fonts; if you are missing any of them, you need to get them back. If Apple will replace the Tiger DVDs free, you can download a copy of Pacifist and use it to hunt through the install packages to find the individual fonts you're missing and reinstall them. Pacifist is here:
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
If Apple won't replace your Tiger DVDs, then you might be able to borrow them from a friend, or else you'll have to pay for another retail copy.

  • Bizarre display/UI behavior scripting Entourage 2004

    Hello, Everyone!
I’ve been working on this script a long time... it is designed to be used with Microsoft Entourage. In order to slim down the email database size, it saves attachments in a specified path (~/Documents/Archived Attachments/[current year]/[current date]), links the email to the newly saved version of the attachment, and then finally (assuming the save was successful) deletes the attachment from the email. I have a nearly identical version working with the older version of Entourage (version X), and it runs fine (mostly). However, this one, for the 2004 version of Entourage, has a really strange issue, which I can not figure out:
As the script is running, even though no windows are told to open (in fact, the script closes ever Entourage window before it begins the archiving procedure), little portions of message windows start appearing here, there & everywhere on the screen. Not complete windows, just small pieces of windows. You can not close them by any normal means, as they are not normal windows. The only way I’ve found to get rid of all these little window pieces that show up is to use Exposé. Hit F9, then F9 again, and all the artifacts that were there are gone... but new ones show up shortly again.
The code is below... and it is a ‘SAFE’ version. That is, the line where the script deletes attachments from your email is commented out, just in case anyone would be willing to try out the script to help me out. If you do, please do make a backup copy of your current Entourage identity, just in case, though I can say I’ve done extensive testing and have never had a lost/damaged email, attachment, database, or what have you.
Can anyone tell me what I’m missing?
    Thanks so much!

    Hi,
i do not have the solution but there is some thigs that can help.
You can use "Run\Stack Trace"(CVI/IDE menu) to check the way of program flow to actual (break) point. This can be useful to check if Ring callbak is called in time when your plot function i s already in run(assuming you call ProcessSystemEvents() or similar)
When you found where problem is, you can eventualy protect you function or callback to be called in only one instance by something like this:   (not multithread safe)
    void func()
    static int runonce=0;
    if (runonce!=0)return;
    runonce=1;
    //... some code
    //... some code
    runonce=0;
    return;
       be careful to insert runonce=0; before any return; in function;
Two tips about changed value of Ring:
a)if control callback return value 1 , some event is swallowed and control change its value back like before the user click.
b)maybe on some other place in program you call SetCtrlVal/SetCtrlAttribute with wrong panel handle/control value
It seems to me that you use "Tab" control, maybe it is related to it, do you corectly get panel handle by GetPanelHandleFromTabPage on all places?

  • Find/Find Next Behavior in ALV in container in ABAP OO

I have an ALV grid in a custom container that's sized for a screen on a high-resolution tube.  In other words, there's a scrollbar on the ALV but none on the screen itself (because the whole screen is visible at the high resolution.)
At this high resolution, a find or find next will correctly scroll the ALV to the row in which an item is found (when the "found" row is below the currently visible row of the ALV.)
But when I switch to a lower resolution where I have a scroll bar on the ALV and on the window itself, a find or find next does not scroll the ALV properly.  You have to manually scroll to find the found row.
Yes - I have both resizings checked on the container.
Is there a way I can:
    1) find the resolution the user is in?
    2) modify the screen size to fit this resolution?
    3) modify the container size to fit this resolution?
    Thanks
    djh

    Calgar -
This is the same thing that Thomas (Jung) suggested in an old ABAP General thread.
But I've done it, and it doesn't work.
Also, I don't understand why I'm getting a scroll bar for the ALV as well as for the screen.
I thought if I did what you and Thomas said, I would only see the scroll bar for the screen and not the ALV.
    Any other ideas ????
    Thanks

  • Bizarre Cover Flow behavior

I downloaded all the available cover art last night and this is what I woke up to:
That's right -the "cover flow" display shows a screenshot of my iMac. Even weirder is that the display updates dynamically. That is, as the iMac screen changes, so does the displayed cover art! It's not just the one in the foreground that changes - way over to the left you can see another album that appears as an iMac screenshot.
There's nothing wrong with the thumbnail in the bottom left corner; that's correct as it always was.
Some of the albums display correctly, others don't. The artwork which I've provided by scanning myself doesn't appear to be affected, but I've only scanned my own for CDs that aren't available from iTunes. Other than that there is no uniformity to the phenomenon that's apparent to me, althought if there is no cover art for a particular album, the normal "blank" cover art appears.
I never had much use for cover art before the ability to download it from Apple, so I never used "view cover flow" much, so I don't know how long this phenomenon has been around. I did a search for this phenomenon here and could find nothing right away.
I've logged in/out, restarted, etc to no avail. At this point it's more of a curiosity than an annoyance to me, but it would be nice to know how to fix it.
    This is iTunes 9.0.2

    Ceremonial 11 day bump.
    Any ideas???

  • Find window behavior

When I search using the Find Command (Command/F), I can't always expand the name field to read the entire name.
Sometimes I can place the mouse at the right edge of the Name column and I get a double arrow which allows me to expand the field and read the entire filenames.  Sometimes, for no reason I understand, I don't get the double arrow and can't expand the Name column.
    Any ideas why this happens?
    Mary Lou

    Hmmmm, might try this...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • App Launches, Slow Finder, Strange Behavior...

Usually I can troubleshoot whatever comes my way, but this truly has me stumped:
    1. After some regular use on my MBP, apps stop launching and I get the beachball. Unresponsive apps have included: Pages, Keynote, Numbers, System Preferences, Word '08, iChat, Safari.
    2. In looking for a clue, the only thing I've noticed is an error message repeated constantly in console: mDNSResponder[22]: ERROR: mDNSPlatformTCPConnect - connect failed: socket 24: Error 13 Permission denied
    3. Very slow response to Finder. Applications folder lags in being able to scroll and click on anything.
I've tried cleaning out cache and checking for fonts and all the other maintenance tricks that one can do. All that will temporarily fix the launching apps problem is a reboot.
Help would be greatly appreciated. I'm am close to running the new DiskWarrior, but with trepidation since I don't know anyone that has DW-ed Leopard.

    Thanks for any troubleshooting hints

Looking at this on my phone but it looks like you L7 policy is referencing a sticky server farm that does not exist.
ie TEST_443_STKY_SF is incorrect name for sticky
If that's not it. Then check that the first server actually has a number of conns on it when a new connection is established. Sometimes when both servers have 0 conns - new incoming conns will always go to the first server

  • Bizarre windows server behavior

Ok so I have a Windows server that is doing some bizarre
stuff. My first thought is some sort of worm/virus but nothing
detects anything. What is happening is let's say I am on the
server and do an FTP command. If I monitor my firewall it reports
that Service tcp_Ftp is active but operating on source port 1585.
If I try and do an http request from a browser it says Service tcp_http
is active but source port is reported as 1562. It is picking random
ports to perform the operation. Also I see sequential scans for ports
via UDP port 1434, which has been associated with SQL Slammer in the past.
As I said though, no virus scanner detects anything. I would say it is a
corrupt IP stack or something except that the web server that runs on it
    functions as normal. WTH?
This is an older W2k SP4 server that is not internet facing.

    > I assume that's normal. Windows XP and earlier uses random source ports
    > between 1025 and 65535. Vista and higher by default use source ports
    > 50000 and up.
Well, that's what I was thinking as well. I think it is actually correct
but was wondering about it. I think the unusual traffic I was seeing was
that the firewall was blocking part of the MSSQL communications so it was
wandering all over the map with these port numbers trying to connect. Once
I unblocked it the strangeness went away. I was just concerned that the
firewall was blocking something malicious so I threw every anti-
rootkit/malware utlity at it that I had. Nothing came up so I guess problem
    solved.

I want onto my iPod. Under the ipod options I have "Sync 5 most
recent episodes of selected podcasts" checked, along with the
ones I want copied to my iPod. In the Summary options, I have
"Only Sync checked items" selected. I then went through and
removed the check marks from all the episodes that I didn't want
copied over, and hit 'sync'. iTunes proceeded to copy every
episode of all the podcasts to the iPod. In essence it ignored
both of the options I had selected. Now my iPod is full, and
I'm at a loss as to how to get it to perform as intended.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Upgrading from 7.0.x to 7.1 seems to have done the trick.

  • Find Server Behavior/JavaScript Errors

I am getting an error whenever I created Update or Insert
record server behaviors in my pages. When I go through the process
of adding the behavior, it inserts the VBScript for my ASP page,
but then I get an error message when findServerBehaviors runs. In
DW8, it was referring the InsertRecord.htm, in DW CS3, it referres
to InsertRecord2.htm whenever I run and Insert Server Behavior. As
I said, it inserts the code, but it will not show an Insert Record
    in the Server Behaviors panel.
If I close and open DW, the next time I open the page, the
behaviors will be listed in the panel, but the moment I make any
changes to the page, and the findServerBehaviors javascript is
triggered, I get the error message and lose the listing of the
insert or update in the behavior panel even those the VBScript code
is still in the page. This is super annoying.
    Anyone have this problem?

It's probably some extension you have installed that's
causing the issue. I found a tech support article that helped -
can't remember where, but basically you recreate your configuration
by renaming your existing config folder to something like
"configuration-old" and then restart DW. It will create a new
config folder and you will have to re-enable all your extensions.
This solved the problem for me initially and I enabled a few
extensions every few days until one day the error started happening
again. For me the problem was caused by the extension "Justso
Picture Window". Once I disabled that extension, my problems went
away. It would be nice if DW had some way of telling you which
    extension is causing an issue.

  • Finder-odd behavior, why is it rebooting??

For the last few days, the Finder is behaving badly. Whether I have five applications open or none, the desktop icons--including three external hardrives and any iPods connected at that moment--will disappear and then reappear a few moments later. If this happens while I am working in another application (like right now typing this message in Safari), when the desktop icons come back, the Finder is the topmost application.
Any ideas on what might be causing this and possible resolutions? It was happening before the latest security update and I have restarted the machine three times since to no avail.
    Thanks

  • Bizarre Magic Mouse behavior in Lion

This is a bit hard to explain, but it's driving me batty, so let's see if I can.
I have a 27" iMac from the previous generation, and the Magic Mouse it came with.
Sometimes when I'm scrolling through a web page in Safari, or about to select something else after I have finished with a web page, the middle column of the page (where most of the information is) is suddenly magnified to fill the entire window, and I can't get it to return to the original magnification.
It looks like it's the feature where you're supposed to be able to double-tap the mouse to zoom into a column, but when I try deliberately double tapping the mouse it selects a word.  So when I want to invoke this feature, I can't, but I can invoke it completely by accident, when I almost never actually want it.  Double tapping the mouse again does nothing at all.
Has anyone had a similar problem and know what makes it happen?  I'm very confused about this .
    Thanks!
    David

I'm somewhat disappointed by this because I like the feature in principle, but when I try to use it it won't do anything.  Very frustrating and strange.
Maybe I need to give the Magic Trackpad a try.  It seems like Apple is really pushing stufff that only really works on trackpads nowadays, but at the time I got my iMac a bit over six months ago, the Magic Mouse gesture support seemed to work just as well.  With the new gestures I think the trackpad might really be the way to go.

  • NB205 updated BIOS now bizarre XP boot behavior

    I have a new NB205 N310/BN.
Wiped XP Home and fresh installed XP Pro/SP2.  Went fine.  Spent 2 days updating and getting machine all up t speed.  Once it was all set, I updated the Bios from 1.20 to 1.60.  After that, the XP splash screen wold come up for a moment, then a micro-second BSOD, then a reboot with the Safe Mode options.  Safe Mode of any sort resulted in the exact same thing.  I finally decided to go into the Bios and set the SATA Controller Mode to "Compatibility", why?  Just a hunch.
    Bingo, it works.
But now the question is why must it now be set on Compatibility Mode when it worked fine on AHCI Mode with the old Bios?

I assumed you installed the AHCI Drivers from the download center....so as long as those are installed the BIOS may of removed the reg keys, here are some tricks. Use at your own risk : )
