BizTalk and SQL Clustering

Hi,
I have following questions in clustering:
1. When we say BizTalk cluster. Does that mean that all the server nodes that participate will use the same SQL server cluster, SSO cluster?
2. In case of SQL Server cluster, one is active and one is passive. Will both the servers be replica of each other? I mean to ask will they have same data and configuration?  If not then how will it work in a failover scenario because the passive
instance will not the all the information of Active instance?
3. Does a Single node of SQL Cluster includes MsgBox and ManagementDB or are they on different Server?
4. What is the ideal setup of Sql DB? Eg: a different for MsgBox, Management DB, SSO etc?
5. Also, as per my understanding, for high availabilty we should have a BizTalk cluster, Sql cluster and SSO cluster? Is that correct?
Thanks.

Cluster or Not, all BizTalk Servers are configured in the same group and use the Master SSO instance. Only in the case of a cluster the associated DB's are clustered. Does not really change anything w.r.t configuration of the BizTalk Group.
I would refer you to the following links
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa373130(v=vs.85).aspx and
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757731(v=ws.10).aspx to get a better understanding of clusters. Clusters in Microsoft are a shared resource so to answer your question, the passive node will (in case of failover) get access to the resources
which were with the active instance and thus no further configu sync is required. Its is the same information from the drives, master DB, services, registry which fails over onto the passive node.
How you utilize the two (or more) nodes of the cluster depends on the load you expect to handle. You may choose to split databases across the TWO nodes [called Active/Active in Microsoft parlance]. This way BOTH the nodes have to be licensed. Each BizTalk
Database has different needs w.r.t frequency of reads/writes, size, etc. The BizTalk Performance Optimization Guide @http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee377064.aspx in addition to best
Practices for Maintaining BizTalk Database @http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg634566.aspx should provide you with guidance on how to split the BizTalk Databases across multiple cluster
nodes.
I would like to provide you ONE configuration fits all BUT that is not possible. The setup of the SQL is highly dependant on the load you expect to address through BizTalk, the HA/DR consideration pertaining to availability/licensing, etc. In short it is
a topic for an infrastructure architect.
BizTalk Cluster is again a subject of requirement. There is no BizTalk Cluster per-se, BizTalk Services (BTSNTSvc.exe) can be clustered so implying that specific host instance can be clustered. As a rule one should only look at clustering those Receive
Protocols which need to be configured for availability. Examples would be FILE, FTP, even DB locations. IIS/Web Services provide HA + scalability through NLB. If you have a SQL Cluster then it is recomended to also cluster SSO on the same set of servers primarily
because it does not require additonal BizTalk Licensing.

Exactly, you have a BEGIN TRANSACTION and a ROLLBACK in error case, but no COMMIT at all.

  • Change the IP Addresss of Servers that are members of a Windows Failover Cluster and SQL cluster

    Hi all,
I have 3-nodes Windows Server 2012 R2 Cluster, on top of it I have two clustered named SQL 2012 instances installed. We need to change the IPs and subnet for the three physical servers incorporated in the Windows cluster. What will be the impact on
the Windows and SQL clusters? What extra configuration is needed in both Windows and SQL clusters to make sure the service will not fail after changing the IPs?

    A similar question was answered
    here.
The impact is that your Windows and SQL Server failover clustered instances will be offline during configuration so you need to schedule downtime. Plus, your client applications will not be able to find the new IP addresses immediately, depending on your
DNS TTL value. Work with your network/systems engineers to find out what this value is or validate the existing TTL values on your clustered resources by checking the HostRecordTTL property value. A workaround here is to set the HostRecordTTL property values
of your SQL Server network name to a very low value, say 1 minute, and then change it back to the current one once all of the applications can connect back to them.

  • Component Service microsoft.biztalk.adapter.sql for BizTalk Server 2009

    Hello All,
We have a production server which has 2 hosts used for receiving data. When I use these hosts for SQL adapter I am getting an error that "the receive location is shutting down. Details: The error threshold has been exceeded. The receive location is
    shutting down"
I did some analysis and can see that the component service "microsoft.biztalk.adapter.sql " is missing on my receive server. Can this be the reason for this?

    Hi,
Please check DTC connectivity between the two servers using DTCPing and DTCTester. That at the very least should make things easier to diagnose.

We have Biztalk application projects deployed on Biztalk 2006R2/SQL server 2005 environment on a single server
Now we  have installed and configured Biztalk 2013/SQL server 2012 in a multicomputer environment where Biztalk server is on one computer while SQL server is on the other.
Now it's time to migrate the projects 2006R2 to 2013.. Is it a smooth process? I found a lot of posts about migration from 2006R2 to Biztalk 2010...  Just wondering if it is similar or more complex?? Appreciate any help/suggestions.. thanks!!

  • SharePoint 2013 and SQL Always On

How do I setup SharePoint with SQL Always On.
I have two servers SQL1 and SQL2.  I created Windows 2012 cluster and called it MyCluster.
I installed SQL Server 2012 SP1 on both servers. I created AlwaysOn group called MyAlwaysOn and added test database to sync between those two servers.
Now I have to install SharePoint 2013.  How do I specify the SQL server? Do I say that name is SQL1? Or MyCluster? Or MyAlwaysOn?
MyAlwaysOn does not have IP address or DNS record, so I do not think I can do it. So, is it SQL1 or MyCluster?
If it is SQL1, do I manualy add SharePoint databases to MyAlwaysOn group? How does it work? How will SharePoint know to switch to SQL2?
Anyone knows how to do it right?
    Thank you.

    Create SharePoint Databases
    Prepare SQL Alias
We need to fool SharePoint into thinking the SQL server where we'll create the configuration database is called something else. That’s because when you create a farm, whatever destination server you use during the “create new farm” stage isn’t forgotten (to
simplify), so first thing’s first let’s create fake alias for our SQL “server” – “SP15” as it’s SharePoint 2013 that’ll use it (version 15). As far as SharePoint needs to know everything is going into a SQL box called 'SP15'.
Now assuming you don’t have SQL Server tools installed (which you shouldn’t if it’s on production!) you’ll need to use a tool called “cliconfg.exe” to create a SQL alias. Run it; click the “Alias” tab, and the Add button.
Add a name – SP15 for the alias name, but it can be anything - instead of referencing a server-name we’ll reference the name of the alias which will transparently redirect traffic to the alias destination instead.
And if you know Russian languages

Так как БД SharePoint в нашем случае будут расположены на удалённом экземпляре SQL Server 2012 SP1(CU9), перед началом установки SharePoint
можно установить пакет Microsoft SQL Server Native Client. Его можно загрузить например со страницы Microsoft
SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 Native Client.
SQL Server Client Network Utility (%windir%\system32\cliconfg.exe)

    Hi Ioakim
Performing an atomic transaction(ACID) that spans a source system, BizTalk and then a different destination system is not possible. This is due to the nature of distributed transactions - it may not be practical to hold locks on resources(needed for atomic
transactions) that are spread across different networks. Given that there is no guarantee that the resources may be released in a reasonable amount of time, transactions in BizTalk can only be scoped to and from the BizTalk MessageBoxDb. Or in other words,
you can read a record to BizTalk transactionally and on the send side, send a message from BizTalk transactionally.
However, you can simulate/fake atomic transaction characteristics(although tricky) using compensation logic within BizTalk orchestrations. So, lets say you read+delete a record from SystemA into BizTalk, and that record has to be updated in SystemB.
If for some reason the insert to SystemB fails, you would have to write custom logic in a compensation block that then performs the reverse operation in SystemA - i.e., it inserts back the record in SystemA in this case. So, using compensating actions, it
is possible to ensure that all the systems involved are transactionally consistent at the end of the day.
There's an article from C.Young that discusses this in some detail-

  • Choosing VM as high availability for BizTalk's SQL Server databases

    Hi,
I'm lloking to choose the architecture of our BizTalk 2013 solution.
The application server will be build on virtual machines, but I still have interrogation about the SQL Server.
Is a SQL Server on a VM supported for BizTalk 2013 ?
Because in case of physical failure, the VM moved to another server can we considered the VM as a solution of High-Availability ?
    thanks for your reply.

When the SQL VM fails over what attributes of the server will change? If everything including the server name, the mapped SAN locations (for Databases) and/or the versions of SQL will remain the same then it will behave like a temporary network outage between
    the Front-end and the SQL.
If however, the failed over VM has a different set of mapped location for DB then you would need to establish a BizTalk Log Shipping between SQL VM 1 and SQL VM 2. In this scenario, the recovery will require time and cannot be automatic.
A word of caution though. If you have SLA's pertaining to transactions/messages per second with the customer then you might want to evaluate having dedicated boxes of SQL. The SQL Licensing is PER CORE and in a VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT all the
CORES have to be licensed since the Virtualization does not permit you to BIND the VM to a specific set of CORES. The same would apply for your BizTalk Servers. This just might work out costlier as opposed to the dedicated server environment.
    Regards.

  • SQL Server 2012 express istallation failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication"

I ran SQL Server 2012 express setup as user with administrator privileges and still it's failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication".

  • SQL Clustering on C Series server with QLE8152-CNA cards

Is there any documentation on best practices when installing Windows on a c series server
with QLE8152-CNA cards for SQL clustering?  Since it will be a bare metal install of Windows, this card will only present a maximum of 2 nics (FI A and FI B) to the Windows OS and because SQL clustering requires multiple nics (heartbeat, regular network), I wanted to know whethere there are guidelines on how to do this or whether it is even supported.  I intend on using the failover feature in UCS Manager 1.4 when creating a service profile for these c series server which means I'll end up with 1 NIC presented to the Windows server.  Thanks.

    Hi Keny,
I tried to powercycle both servers (c260M2 and C460M2) but still no discovered server and also no logg.
    I checked
Rack Server Discovery Policy == immediate
Rack management Connecton Policy == Auto Achnowledged
    Chassis/Fex Doscovery Policy == 2 Link and Port-Channel (As I installed 2232PP I moved to Port Channel)
I am running UCSM Version 2.1(1e)
    FI 6248 Version 5.0(3)N2(2.11e)
2232PP run on same as FI
I also have a connected 5108 with IOM 2104 running on 2.1(1e) Version.
CIMC Version of C260M2 and C460M2 will be checked tomorrow when my kolleague is in the datacenter.
Server Connection is not really the same like in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c-series_integration/ucsm2.1/b_UCSM2-1_C-Integration_chapter_011.html
Because I still have no VIC Card but the connections are the same.

With C260 I also tried a reboot with disconnected 10 GE Ports, but also no discoverd Server until now.

  • Crystal Reports 9 and SQL Server 2005 default parameter values

We're using Crystal Reports 9 and upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005.
I'm noticing a very weird problem which I wonder if anyone else has experienced (and hopefully found a resolution for). It appears that in using Crystal with SQL Server 2005 stored procedures, if we have default parameter values in the stored procedures, the default parameter values get completely ignored if you pass in a NULL value from Crystal!
For example, if you have a stored procedure that begins like this:
    ALTER          Procedure [dbo].[StoredProcedure]
    @Param1 VarChar(200) = '',
    @Param2 VarChar(200) = ''
    AS ...
both @Param1 and @Param2 have a default value of an empty string, and therefore should become empty strings if nothing (NULL values) gets passed in for them.
But, like I said, what I'm finding is that with Crystal calling the stored procedure with NULL @Param1 and @Param2 values, they never become empty strings, but rather remain as NULLs.
This was never a problem with SQL 2000.
Very perplexing. Anyone else every experience this?
    Thank you.

Please ignore my earlier post -- answered my own question.
NULL parameter values do not get replaced by default values in SQL -- that is normal behavior in both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Just goes to show, that no many how many years programming experience you have, you can still get tripped up sometimes : (
