A simpler fix now - but I am still not sure of the cause - might be a faulty hard disk - but this doesn't make sense in that it always seems to be related to Safari - so is there a malfunction with Safari.
This morning - same problem fixed by repairing permissions with the disk utility. then a shutdoen and restart. Log says:
Repairing permissions for “”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Repaired “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”
Permissions repair complete
Is this a hard disk malfunction or a safari issue? All ideas gratefully received.

Black screen with white flashing line on startup

~issue~
Hello; I've recently encountered a problem with bootcamp that I can't find a solution to... Every time I start up the computer in boot camp, all I get is that black screen with the white flashing line. It comes up, goes to a plain black screen, then quickly comes up again. It never stops, either. I've let it run, and it won't finish.
I've had the partition for MONTHS now, and nothing like this has happened. I've had it since I upgraded to Snow Leopard awhile back, and needed to re-partition the drive. I literally had been using it the day before it happened, and the only thing that happened was that I got that "Windows Security 2011" malware, but I got rid of it fully (As I've gotten it 3 times this month). The other two times I got it, it didn't do anything. I fixed it, and went on with life. But is it possible that it broke something in the partitions inner files this time?
I ran disk utility, and it said the partition was broken. After verifying it and confirming this, I did "Repair Drive", as it allowed me to. It finished with no errors and said it completed, so I tried to go back into the partition, but it gave me the same results.
To be honest, most of my stuff is on my External Harddrive, so re-doing the partition is only going to be time used to me. But I still DO have things on there, and it'd be a pain to transfer them back and forth between the Mac and Windows partitions... I'd really like to know if there's anyway to fix this, or if it's just going to fall back to me re-partitioning the drive...
Thanks for the help in advance. That blinking line is a "cursor." It's only supposed to show for a second or two as your iMac switches to and then starts Windows. But as you indicate here, it's not getting past the cursor..
Disk Utility can repair FAT volumes, but it cannot correct issues caused by corrupted items which, if the volume was repaired, there may be some.
Since we are dealing with a Windows boot partition, it's entirely possible that the repairs inadvertently corrupted the data Windows needs to start and run. It's also posible that Mac OS, in fixing the Boot Camp volume, overwrote the existing boot record in the Windows partition with a generic, though non-bootable version.
Windows' own CHKDSK should have been used to make the repairs rather than the OS X Disk Utility, which would have avoided this worst-case scenario in data recovery. CHKDSK has a special version of itself on the Windows disc, which may be accesed by using the Windiws Recovery Consile upon pressing R during the "Welcome to Setup" screen.
Though it appears ftom my position here that you will need to reinstall XP, it may yet be possible to recover data that hasn't been copied to the external HDD. For this task, I'd like to recommend that you start up in Mac OS for the time being, and pull any new or changed items from the Boot Camp volume except for installed software; the latter are nearly impossible to transport with reasonable accuracy, and should instead be reinstalled.
Once you have what you need, format your Boot Camp volume and reinstall Windows, this time selecting NTFS as your filesystem. NTFS is the preferred option for Windows in general, thiaks to its innate file access controls as well as the ability to compress or encrypt data "on the fly." NTFS can be read by Mac OS X, but not written from it, thus NTFS volumes cannot be altered except by Windows itself.. But it is also a requirement if you plan to upgrade your unit using Windows 7 in future.

Panic Reports and black screen since Lion upgrade
Hi there
I have a 13" Macbook Pro, mid 2009 with 4Gig ram. and 160Gig hard-drive (23Gig free).
2 days ago I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion 10.7.2 and ever since, my machine has been freezing. It either has a panic attack (or whatever you call it) or i get a black screen saying, "You have to restart your computer..."
This is a copy of my last panic report:
Could anybody tell me why this is happening? It never happened once on Snow Leopard...
Thank you...

Acrobat 9.0;PDF is black screen/want new window
Hello,
Two problems:
I installed Acrobat Pro 9.0 as part of Creative Suite. Now PDFs open as a black screen normally (with some opening as normal.
I use Mac with 10.8.4 and Safari.
Also, I want PDFs to open in a new window. It is frustrating for the PDF to open in my browser window.
Do I need to install Acrobat Reader? Doesn't Acrobat Pro 9.0 have a reader?
This is a new Mac. On my old Mac PDFs opened as a new window . . . it just did it that way.
Thanks for help,
JoAnnAcrobat 9 may not be completely compatible with 10.8.4. Whether pdfs in a browser open in a new window is up to the coder of the webpage. Not Acrobat. If you right-clik on the url, you can choose to open the pdf in a new window.

Black screen, red light flashing
I was downloading an app when a screen message told me to restart to continue installation. I pressed the Off button but now, despite pressing the start button, the phone will not come alive, although it was recently charged. There is just a black screen and the small red light flashes occasionally.
Solved!

Welcome to BlackBerry Support Community Forums
Pressing the Off Button is not the Correct way to restart our BlackBerry device, please perform a Battery Pull Restart like this While Device is Powered On remove the Battery wait for a min. then re-insert it back wait till the device take a long Reboot. See if that helps.
If not then try Starting your device On Safe Mode and on Safe Mode Uninstall the Application your Downloaded recently or which you think is responsible for that.

My 80gb ipod isn't working.... black screen with white flashes
Got the 80 GB Ipod (with video) X-mas '06, haven't had many problems with it (except for the occasional freezing, where the standard "reset" technique has fixed it).
Was using it last night, the battery meter was pretty low. Turned it off and went to bed. Woke up, tried using it today, and it wouldnt turn on.
The screen is black, but every 5-10 seconds, there's a quick white flash. It has been doing this all day.
I've tried resetting it, charging it into my Windows USB port... nothing. The computer doesn't even seem to recognize it, and ITunes doesnt start when I plug it into the USB like it normally does.
The black screen/white flashing continues even when it's plugged into the USB.
Any ideas on what is going on? What should I do?
Thanks in advance.Have you been through these?

Please note this question is about "black screen" in both iPhoto AND Flash. They are linked in that the symptom appears in both - if I notice in iPhoto then I know that flash videos will also not work; and if I solve it then both are resolved simultaneously.
MacBook Pro Mid2012 OS 10.9.3 iPhoto Firefox 30.0 (same problem in Safari) Adobe Flash 14.0.0.125 iPhoto 9.5.1 (different specs to my apple ID because this is happening on my daughters mac book pro). Never had this problem on my older MacBook Pro.
We have had this problems 3 times (once a month) and keep resolving it but I am not sure why or how!
Sympton: iPhoto - thumbnails show but when clicked to show full screen the screen is black. If the photo is flagged then the flag can be seen (in the place you would expect the top left corner of the photo to be).
Firefox - flash videos just show a black screen
Safari - flash videos do not play and suggest that flash player needs updating. On following the link it goes to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and tries to load the page several times before displaying a long error message
Solution:
The solution is a combination of the following. Without understanding what the the cause is it is difficult to know which is fixing it:
1 Uninstall Flash with Adobe uninstaller http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/support/uninstall_flash _player_osx.dmg
2 find a way to download the flash player installer file (can't remember exactly how I did this as this last time I had it in the downloads folder already))
2 Verify and Repair Disk Permissions shows the following
Repairing permissions for “”Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .Repaired “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Safari.help/Contents/Resources/inde x.html”
Permissions repair complete
3 Re-install Flash
4 Restart at every available opportunity
I have in the past also repaired the disk and used iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the iPhoto library but these are lengthier and don't seem necessary.
Any ideas on what is causing both flash and iPhoto to fail at the same time so that we can fix the underlying problem very much appreciated.
Thanks
PaulA simpler fix now - but I am still not sure of the cause - might be a faulty hard disk - but this doesn't make sense in that it always seems to be related to Safari - so is there a malfunction with Safari.
I just purchased a K450e and upgraded it with an SSD, 650 watt PSU, and Radeon R9 290. Unfortunately, after installing the GPU, I get only a black screen. I've been through previous posts and disabled secure boot and switched boot mode to legacy. Still nothing. The onboard graphics work if I take the card out, but when I put it in, I get no output from either. Any help??
Hi praziquantal,
Have you tried toggling the BIOS switch on the r9 290.
See the Details below from
http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmarks,15.html
Spoiler (Highlight to read)
The AMD Radeon R9 290 and 290X comes flashed with two separate BIOSed for testing. The bios can be toggled by the small black switch located on the top of the part closest to the mounting bracket that you plug your displays into. You must reboot after toggling the switch for changes to take effect.

10.6.7 update: black screen since
Updated my MacPro (2008, or 2007...?) to 10.6.7 this morning: black screen throughout.
Tried all the usual keyboard tricks when rebooting; C, Option, Cmd-Option-P-R, Shift, etc., nothing works.
Reboot using Installation DVD doesn't work either.
All build in harddiscs are accessible and readable when I connect my MacBook Pro (FireWire or Network cable).
Screensharing using my MacBook 'works' but also gives a black screen.
Think the update has done something to the drivers of the graphic card and the support of the second monitor.
I use two large monitors, disconnected one of them when the problem started.
Think I have to adjust the resolution to a lower setting, but with only a black screen I cant adjust anything at all.
HELP!Exactly the same thing happened here! I updated to 10.6.7 yesterday, and today my MacBook Pro (pre-aluminum body) was plugged in to power and awake.
I shut the lid and unplugged the power to take it downstairs. Now the screen won't wake up! The sleep light on front is also on solid, but dimmed. I have rebooted many times but still have a black screen!
I was able to VNC in from another Mac and found the display is at 1280x1024.
What did they do? I can't seem to get out of this! I'd love to deinstall that update, but how? -
White/Black Screen Problems With Flash Player
I have had a problem with flash player since updating it in November. Certain websites such as YouTube and Worldstarhiphop work perfectly while other websites such as Facebook produce black or white screens when trying to play videos. If you attempt to play a video on a website in which you get the black or white screen, you can still hear the audio. While that is annoying it is only a minor inconvenience, the biggest problem is with other websites that require flash. I currently want to run an internet speed test on my computer but I can not find a website that my flash player will work with. The weird thing is that the animation at (http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html) plays correctly.
To fix the problem, I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall flash player. I have also tried changing the settings, enabling/disabling hardware acceleration. I feel like I've tried just about everything and I'm running out of ideas. I currently am using flash version 12.0.0.44 through Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.16518. My computer is running on Windows 7. Does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this problem?I am having the same problems and have tried all the posted solutions with no positive result, so far.
Similar to above… on all of the web pages on which I am unable to see the flash videos, if I click in the flash window to start the video, all I get is audio playback with a black or white screen.
However… If I move the mouse around inside the flash window, I can see that the mouse pointer still reacts wherever the video control buttons are located at the bottom (although I can’t see the buttons, themselves). And if I click the “full screen” button …. usually in the lower right… my view goes to full screen and the video appears!
I don’t know about everyone else, but my problem appears to be limited to:
Specific websites (facebook, most news websites)… I have no problem with Youtube or the Adobe Test Page.
Viewing video in the embedded flash window on the web page... Opening the video to full screen allows me to see it.
I’ve tried this on several of my problem websites with consistent “success” at viewing videos. It's an annoying solution, but at least I can see the videos. -
Xperia so-02c has a black screen since updating
Hello,
I agreed to an Android update from Sony on 08/18/2012. It told me I needed to charge my battery before the update, so I did (although not fully) everything progressed fine until my phone powered off. Since then it hasn't powered back on. This is the first update I’ve ever agreed to, needless to say if I’d thought this would happen I wouldn’t have agreed to Sony’s download.
Originally I could hold the power button down and the phone would still vibrate, but nothing else would happen. When I plugged it into the computer and then pressed the back button the green light would come on. I've re-updated the phone using PC companion, and Update Service. I have both the Update, and the Factory Reset + update options. Each time the software on my computer told me the update was successful. Now when I hold down the power button the LED will flash red three times, no matter how long I hold it there is no longer any vibration. I have also tried holding down the power/volume up (and down) buttons, but the screen continues to ignore me. The screen has never showed no signs of life since the update. When this whole things started the phone was low on memory. When I plug the phone into the charger it blinks red at a steady pace before turning a solid green; I have not seen any other colors than red or green from the LED since this all began. I have tried all of the above with the SD and SIM card in, one in and one out, vise versa and both out. I don’t know if the phone is unlocked; I’m assuming at this point that it’s bricked
It's a Japanese phone from Docomo but I've been using it in Canada without any problems. I’ve had no battery problems and the screen was functioning fine until all of this started. I bought the phone two months ago but I have no warranty.
I would certainly appreciate any help you can offer.Try letting the phone charge for a couple of hours and then run the software repair option in PCC. If it doesn't help it needs to be examined at an repair center to get it fixed. Contact your local support team to check if they might be able to help you.

[SOLVED] Black Screen in new Installation (Intel GMA 3650)
Hi everybody,
I installed Arch on my new DN2800MT system using the Archboot installer (2012.04-2) for UEFI boot support. GRUB2 is running fine after all. The only problem is, that the screen turns black/completely off during the boot process. The installation seems to work in principle: if I wait a while, log in and type "shutdown -h now" or "reboot" the system shuts down or reboots. Just the output seems to be broken.
A video can be found on YouTube. A screenshot immediately before it turns black:
The last lines are
:: Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed
[ 6.444167] gma500 0000:00:02.0: GPU: power management timed out.
Interestingly the boot of the Archboot DVD also starts with the screen turning black. Some time later the the boot process seems to fix the issue at hand: the screen comes back alive. I also posted a video of that process on YouTube. The messages on the screen when it turns back on:
This behavior of Archboot indicates that this problem can be solved somehow. I would appreciate every hint on what's wrong a lot. For modification of the installed system I can boot Archboot, mount the installation and chroot into it.
Thanks a lot guys!

Yeah you're right: it's totally hopeless. I now basically have two options: using an old AIF to install an older version of arch with a local repo, kernel <= 2.6.37 and Xorg <= 1.9 to get the old Intel poulsbo driver running or using Windows 7. I think the latter is the better choice.
There is only one very faint hope for a crazy solution: in the dependencies of the old pulsbo driver itself the kernel version isn't mentioned. What do you think of the idea of using the new gma500_gfx module with fbdev for xorg and the old binary driver just for VAAPI? VAAPI is in principle independent of xorg. So in theory this works, right?
[EDIT] This crazy idea has one flaw: the old drivers are i686-only (because of the binary blobs). At that time all systems with poulsbo graphics controller were 32-bit so that is reasonable. I impudently asked Intel support for the two binary blobs compiled for 64-bit. I mean: they sell a fully integrated system incompatible with their own binary driver for linux. Let's wait for the answer. If they turn me down, it means bye-bye to Linux .
I just received (today) a CedarTrail Netbook (Atom N2800) and discovered with horror that the graphic chipset is not supported. Please let me know if Intel will give you an answer since I was thinking of directly contact them too.
Btw, how did you contact them, can you give me a mail/website/other?

R9 290 Black screens with newer drivers
Hi guys. I have a brand new Gaming 290 4G. I cannot get both my displays (1 on DVI and the other on HDMI) to work when trying to install the latest couple of drivers. I have tried 14.12, 14.11.2 and 14.9. As soon as the driver is installed, both my screens just go black and i have to unplug a display and hard reset my pc. If i try booting with both screens attached, i have display on both, up to just before the login screen, then both go black. With only a single display attached (DVI or HDMI), everything works fine. I tried the drivers that came bundled with the card (13.11) and i have no issues then, both displays works perfectly. What am i doing wrong here ?

Hi.
No, not yet, ive been downloading from AMD's site.
I will download the 14.4 here from work and try them tonight when I get home.
Is there a difference between the drivers that MSI offers and the ones from AMD's site ?
Does MSI update the drivers frequently, in line with AMD ?
Thanks
