Is there any way to get substr from BLOB column which stores RTF files
When dbms_lob.substr is used it give hex values

</Root>I am using the XMLTYPE constructor and passing in the BLOB column and the character set id of the XML data stored in the BLOB column in order to extract and update a node in the XML as follows:
select xmltype(srce_form_detail,873) from SRCE_FORM where 873 above corresponds to the utf-8 encoding of the XML data in the BLOB column i.e. AL32UTF8, but this results in the above error.
I have also tried converting the BLOB to a CLOB first as below where BLOB2CLOB is a function that converts the BLOB to a CLOB:

Looking at the XML in the BLOB I noticed that it contains a BOM(byte order mark) and this is causing the XML parsing to fail and I don't know how to deal with it and I don't want to simply SUBSTR it out.
What I am trying to achieve is to extract the contents of the DB node in the XML and depending on its value I need to update the 'Value' part of that node. I am stuck at the point of extracting the contents of the DB node.
I hope I have provided enough information and I would appreciate any suggestions on how best to resolve this - my XML knowledge is very limited so I would appreciate any help.

Thanks for your response.
You are correct that the blob contains Japanese and Chinese characters but I was expecting that using the XMLTYPE constructor would convert the character set albeit with some data loss or then not display the Chinese and Japanese characters correctly.
It seems to me that XMLTYPE is not handling/interpreting the BOM contained in the BLOB since even converting the BLOB to CLOB is resulting in an error. If I use SUBSTR and ignore the BOM to extract the XML from the BLOB then it works and as expected the Chinese and Japanese characters are not displayed correctly, they are displayed as '¿' corresponding to the lines beginning with L81, L86 & L87 , see below:

Furthermore I am able to write the BLOB out to a file successfully without any errors using DBMS_LOB & UTL_FILE.PUT_RAW and this seems to handle the BOM without any issues but what I really need to do is read a single node in the XML and update it directly preferably using XMLTYPE directly with the BLOB.
I would welcome your suggestions on how best to read a single node and update it when the XML is contained in a BLOB.

You're doing exactly what the error says, that is committing with an open LOB. Look at the following piece of code: you write in the LOB, you flush it and then commit. There is no closing of the LOB stream before committing.
Try putting the tempBlobOStream.close() instruction before the commit.

I want to send blob (binary) and convert it to array like the function do.
I want to send blob because the function above uses varchar that restrict to 4k and I want to send more than 4k chars.

How to customize blob column text displayed in a report
Hi All,
I have a table with column File_name (varchar2) and file_content (blob).
Report generated by the APEX allows me to show report with two different column
File Name || File Content

I would like to show the report in such a way the File name column is hyperlinked to download the blob content.
I tried to change the link using the BLOB format mask, but seems it only takes up text value and not column name as #FIELD_NAME#
Any idea how to achieve this ?

Instead of making users manually save each report to get a soft-copy of the report, I wanted to be able to retrieve the reports from a BLOB field, create a new external file for it, and open the file with the related editor (MS Word, Adobe, IE, etc.).
We are on Oracle 10g, and I was able to get a file populated with some BLOB data for a particular RTF file. However, when I try to open the file in MS Word, all I get is junk.
Does anyone know if JDE stores these documents differently into BLOB fields than standard?

Downloading a file from Database [Blob field]
I am trying to write an application which can upload and download files [Excel, Word etc.] to/from an Oracle 9i database Blob field. I am using Java/JSP for the same.
The upload part works just fine. However, when I try to download the file that I uploaded, I get an error.
A dialog box comes up asking me to Open/Save the file. However, when I try to save it, it says
�Internet Explorer cannot download �..tion=download&planId= testplan from localhost
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.�
I am using IE 6.0. I tested the same with Firefox browser and was able to download the file.
Can anyone help?

is this problem solved for you, I am also writing the java code to store different files in blob fields in database(db2udb) and allow users to open them through jsp pages. Upload seems to be working fine.....My big problem is only excel files are opened properly in both IE and Firefox. Word files, image files are not getting opened. Any suggestion as what I could be doing wrong....my jsp is kind of similar to the above one...

XML data from BLOB to CLOB - character set conversion

I'm trying to solve a problem with a character set conversion in PL/SQL in the following scenario:
1. source is an XML as a BLOB variable.
2. target is an XML as a CLOB variable.
3. the problem I have is the following:
- database character set is set to UTF-8
- XML character set could be anything (UTF-8, ISO 8859-1, ISO 8859-2, ASCII, ...)
- I need to write a procedure which converts the source BLOB content into the target CLOB taking into account the XML encoding and converts it into the DB default character set (UTF8).
I've been able to implement a simple conversion function. However, this function expects static XML encoding ISO-8859-1. The main part of the function looks as follows:

JuliusI want to pass a BLOB to some "createXML" procedure and get a proper XMLType in UTF8 character set, properly converted from whatever character set is the input in.As per documentation the generated XML has always the encoding set at the client side depending on NLS_LANG (default UTF-8), regardless of the input encoding, so I don't see a need to parse the PI of the XML:

END blob_to_clob;Not sure why a BLOB is being used here. If you are processing just a CSV (text) file you shouldn't need a BLOB. You should be able to handle it directly as a CLOB. Could you detail more how you are using this function or what exactly your process is doing i.e. how is the data read in from CSV, where does it go, etc.?

SOLUTION - How to display a BLOB content in Portal Report
Courtesy of Kelly Wong:
1. Every time a record of the file information is inserted into the
PORTAL30.WWDOC_DOCUMENT table while you inserted a record to the blob
field in a portal form that you created.
[The fact that a file uploaded appears in the WWDOC_DOCUMENT table is actually a side-effect of Forms file upload, this may change in a future version. However this example gives a pretty good solution to the problem - Dmitry]
2. If you describe the PORTAL30.WWDOC_DOCUMENT table, you will find
that a few of the columns are: NAME, FILENAME, MIME_TYPE, BLOB_CONTENT,
CREATOR, etc.
3. I created a pl/sql procedure that takes a NAME parameter.
The code of the procedure is as follows:

You can see that I am passing in "NAME" instead of "FILENAME" into the
get_url procedure because the it needs the "NAME" info to display the
file.
Actually, the content in the NAME column is something like:"563.TXT",
and the content in the FILENAME column is "F15675/IPORTAL_LOCAL.TXT".
The hyperlink can be either on the NAME or FILENAME field, as long as
you pass in the content of "NAME" into the procedure.
And it should be fairly easily to substring the FILENAME to show only
"IPORTAL_LOCAL.TXT" if the client doesn't like to see the number
portion.
That is, when I click on the link, I am able to see my file in a new
browser window.The only drawback in this scenario is if there is a link
from your document to a portal component (form/report), it may not link
to the form/report. If there are links in the document link to other
document (html, txt, etc.), it will be no problem. It just open the
document in another browser window.

Downloading blob content from a custom table
In our hosted Apex application, the following code from the Application Express Developer's Guide works great for allowing a user to download blob content from one of our custom tables via a download button. However, the code doesn't work on the Oracle Cloud because the "owa_util" package is no longer available. The code is as follows:

Besides using web services, does anyone know of a way to do this? Is there a way to add access to the "owa_util" package in the cloud? I have also tried apex_util.get_blob_file_src but that is also unavailable in the Oracle Cloud.

The way I solved this was to split the code between two page processes and one application process. The download button first calls a page process to move the report data into a blob column and then calls another page process which is of "run application process" type. This calls the application level process where the download code, shown below, is called.
Notice the following changes to the code from the one posted earlier (also from Joel)
1) added sys.htp.init;
2) "sys." to all htp, owa and wpg_docload calls
3) added apex_application.stop_apex_engine; after the wpg_docload statement at the bottom of the script.
Now the download button launches a "save as" dialog box and the report content is downloaded to the client.
The code now looks like:

I have an APEX app that stores PDFs and RTF file in my DB as BLOBS. Users click on links and download these files. I use a DB procedure to build the http header for dl of the blob. (I think I got it from the APEX help section).
Everything works except for the file name of the PDF blobs. I still get the file but the file name is always the name of my DB schema.pdf. The filename var is set correctly in the DB, same datatype as the RTF file.
Same results if you left or right -> save target as click. RTF works. PDF works but odd filename.
As anyone heard of an issue like this? Thanks for any help.

I have to write a simple utl file and store it in a column of blob data tye..i hav written a piece of code..it shows invalid path as error..please kindly help me

Each separated by symbol '#'...
Now the problem is this, I want to store that FILE_F column into my another table, with each column generate based on the separated values in the text file....

extract the relevant text for each specific column.
