Block in safari

is there any way to block a user from going to certain sites via safari? my brother keeps playing games... i don't want him to.

Yes, but it involves using the Terminal to edit a file. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder and enter the following at the prompt:
prompt >cd /etc
prompt >sudo pico hosts
You will be prompted to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed. When the editor opens the hosts file scroll down to the last line and press RETURN. On the new line enter
127.0.0.1 unwanted domain name (i.e., www.games.com)
Press RETURN and enter the next domain using the same format. When you are finished press CTRL-X to quit. You will be prompted to save the file. Do so by replying with "y" to the prompts. Upon exiting the editor you can verify if you did it correctly by entering
prompt >cat hosts
If all is well quit the Terminal.

Quit Safari, choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu if needed, and then relaunch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the computer from the Internet and try again.

Sorry I don't think it's reasonable to expect Apple cater to every single need. Should there be a preference for disabling gifs, pngs or jpegs how about an option for disabling gifs that are blue but only on Mondays when it's raining? There are too many possibilities to cater for everyone and there are other browsers that already work how you desire.
OS X used to have preferences for different Dock styles, but Apple have been removing those options for sometime now. Your final sentence make it clear you already understand how Apple progresses. I have been on the receiving end of Apple's arbitrary changes too, but there came a point where I just got over it & found alternatives.
'defaults write' settings played havoc with users updating to 10.9 - some users had disabled screenshot shadows, that resulted in System Preferences that had sections of UI totally missing, it took weeks to unpick the reason for the fault! These edge case 'hidden settings' can be more trouble than you imagine. They conflict in new & interesting ways with every update.
You can ask Apple to revert the change, but it doesn't seem like something they would do. There is a simple way to evaluate possible feature requests - Ask yourself 'How does this benefit Apple?'
    http://apple.com/feedback/
I tested the 'ugly hack' & it worked for me but an extension is the correct way to resolve it. Another option is to setup a proxy server that blocks them from downloading on any device on the network. Ultimately if you don't want to investigate a solution you are part of the problem.

  • Popups not blocked on Safari..? pop-ups June 2007

    Hi everyone,
On Safari, I have popups blocked and on Private Browsing, this eve I did a Gooogle Search, in the results, I clicked on the 'cache' part, encyclopedia something etc .com, and I got a popup Window: 'Notice: your computer has tracks of all.... etc, Would you like to Install "DriveCleaner to" .
I had 2 Safari Windows open, generic sites, Craigs and the 'Cache' google search wouldn't load. The comp was 'stuck' (not using the word frozen), to avoid the popup, I had to force Quit applications, then I reset Safari, (there was a cookie in there for drivecleaner .com)
This is June 07', I haven't seen popup post's on this forum since December, anyone else have this problem?, Seeking idea's so it NEVER happens again...
P.S. I didn't get a window up from apple, to describe what I was doing when this happened, (I've had 1 0f those in a year and a half), Thanks

I am having the same problems even though I have popups blocked on Safari. I am getting popups from drivecleaner and errorprotector. I was also 'stuck' where nothing worked except to cancel or agree to drivecleaner.
The same with errorprotector, except when I clicked on cancel, another popup opened still not allowing me to do anything other than to cancel or agree. When I clicked cancel to that, a window opened and that window tried to download something on my system. Force quit didn't even work, I had to manually shut the computer off. This has happened 5 times this week already.
I also didn't get a window from Apple so I could report the problem.
Has anyone found an effective way around this problem yet?????
Edit: I didn't know whether to post a new question or make a post here since I am having the same problem. Sorry if I did it wrong.

  • Firefox suddenly stopped working blocking evenb safari- why? what has gone wrong, under feed back ?http?

Firefox suddenly stopped working with Mac OS 10.6.8- keeps blocking even Safari- will jot download , open pdf file downloads-- wasted a lot of time of several University experts- we can't locate work out why- x3 quit everything, download, reinstalled twice, machine switch on/off- something seriously wrong and wasting alot of time.
It had been working faultless for years- recently iMAC 1TB disc was changed by Apple under their programme of exchange for 'free'- it has not worked since!!!!
    Many thanks

On PDF issues, disable the Adobe Acrobat plugin so that PDFs open in Apple's own native PDF reader instead.

  • Adobe Reader Blocked in Safari

It's been a while, but ever since I upadated to Safari 7.0.1 (or maybe even the version earlier), I've been unable to open any PDF documents inside of Safari. When I click on a link on Google linked to a PDF document, a grey page shows up with the message "Adobe Reader blocked for this website" I tried clicking the message and a panel dropped down asking me whether I trust the website or not. But even after I clicked Trust and the page reloaded it self the PDF still doesn't show up.
Anyoen know how to get around this? I know Apple got rid of native support for many web applications because of security threat but there should be a way to put it back in right?

  • Google cookies cannot be blocked in Safari?

When using OS 10.5 or higher and Safari, google cookies cannot be deleted.
Google cookies show up when privacy setting is set to block cookies.
Google cookies reappear minutes later after they are deleted and privacy set to block cookies.
Google cookies reappear even after cookies.plist file is deleted.
This is not a problem when using OS 10.4 or earlier versions.
This is not a problem when using Firefox.
Is there a fix to this problem other than switching to Firefox as the primary browser?

If doing so improved the situation, this confirms that one of Safari's database files has become corrupt.
The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
In other words it is part of Safari's (version 3.2 onwards) anti-phishing security feature.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db
(This location may vary depending on your OS)
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

  • Where is the Pop Up blocker in Safari 6?

In previous versions, it was under the Safari Menu.

Is this now the only way to enable/disable?  At least the menu option was a fast, easy access option to disable/enable as needed, or to use Command-K, but to remove this option???  I tried the keyboard shortcut and it did nothing.
I grew not to like Firefox because it didn't support gestures and I really like this in Safari.
It's bad enough that Safari doesn't support a popup exceptions list, but the Command-K shortcut option was at least a compromise. Safari 6 now has three strikes against it:
    1) offensively wide tabs
    2) loss of the separate search box
    3) loss of a quick way to toggle popup blocking - no menu option or shortcut key combination.

  • Java Cortado blocked by Safari?

I am using a macbook pro, OS X 10.9.4, with Safari 7.0.6. I was trying to view a video from Wikipedia, but got a message saying "Application Blocked by Security Setting...Your security settings have blocked an untrusted application from running." I believe this was an OGG file, and was supposed to be played by Java Cortado. Is there a way to get this to play in Safari? (It will play in Firefox.)

I first saw this problem with the video (which has the OGV extension) on the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REM_behavior_disorder . However, the "Media of the Day" at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page also shows this problem. I just discovered that, on the wikimedia page, it suggests help for Safari:
"For the Safari browser, you will need to install XiphQT to play Ogg files and Perian to play WebM files.
Alternatively, you can download Xiph QuickTime Components to play directly sound files in Ogg Vorbis with Quicktime Player or with your browser. Install the XiphQT component into /Library/Quicktime folder, then restart your browser so it can play Ogg Vorbis files."
I have tried that and still have no luck. (I downloaded the first video I mentioned, and it won't open in Quicktime 7 either.)
The videos show just fine in Firefox, but I prefer Safari.

  • I have popups blocked on Safari, but just had MacKeeper popup.  Confused.

How did I receive a MacKeeper popup in Safari when have "block popups" checked in Safari preferences?
    Thank you.

    Hi...
That particular pop up tends to bypass the Safari ad blocker unfortunately.
    Go to   ~/Library/Safari
Move these files to the Trash.
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    LastSession.plist
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
Best to not install MacKeeper. Results of an ASC forum search for MacKeeper >  Community Search: Apple Support Communities
Causes Mac users nothing but problems.
