Block selection in SQL Developer?

Hey everyone! A co-worker of mine uses TOAD to do work with our databases, however I use SQL Developer as I like it very much. During one of our meetings, he used something called "Block Selection" (I think that's what it's called....) in his code editor, by holding down ALT and highlightning a 'block' of text. This made it so he wouldn't grab text line by line.
I thought it was very cool, and it would be extremely helpful to clean up and format a bunch of procedures I have. I use a monospaced font to keep everything "in line" so to speak....makes it easier to read, especially in very large packages. Anyone know if SQL Developer supports this capability? Been searching all over for it on google, and through all the SQL help files but havn't found anything. Could be that I just don't know what to look for. Help would be appreciated!

It's in the older versions of SQL Developer as well
http://www.thatjeffsmith.com/archive/2012/07/how-to-block-select-text-in-oracle-sql-developer/
What's weird is in 4.0, it doesn't work when 'block select' is enabled, but DOES work when it's not enabled....unless I'm reading that backwards.

  • Query Results not coming for SELECT * in sql developer 3.1.07

    VERY FRUSTRATING to use sql developer.
    In SQL DEVELOPER 3.1.07:
    WHAT WORKS: select sequence# from v$archived_log
    WHAT DOESN'T WORK : select * from v$archived_log
    You've got to be kidding me.
    I wish I can show a screenshot, but can't in this forum. Here's my description:
    When I run the query, in the bottom frame for Query Results, it just says: Executing: select * from v$archived_log in 0 seconds.
    Then there's no result grid.

    Is this a 'manual' standby db? Are you using Data Guard?
    Post the results for what Gary ask of running the queries in sql*plus. If those queries give the same result then this is NOT a sql developer issue.
    Review the following thread and post back with what information in it applies to your use case.
    Re: V$ARCHIVED_LOG returns no rows on manual standby
    If you are using Data Guard you may want to cross-post in that forum.

  • SQL Developer can't commit edited data in Table Data pane

    When I try to commit changes in "Data" pane for selected table SQL Developer gives me a strange error:
    One error saving changes to table "TABLENAME".:
    Row XXX: Data got commited in another/same session, cannot update row.
    I can see in the log that SQL Developer tries to do something like:
    UPDATE "TABLENAME" set "COLUMN"="value1" where ROWNUM="xxxx1" and ROW_SCN=nnn1;
    UPDATE "TABLENAME" set "COLUMN"="value2" where ROWNUM="xxxx2" and ROW_SCN=nnn1;
    UPDATE "TABLENAME" set "COLUMN"="value3" where ROWNUM="xxxx3" and ROW_SCN=nnn2;
    If I update the same rows in SQL window by other condition and do commit - all is OK. Why so strange behaivour?
    My table has not a primary key and no other users try to change it. SQL Developer version 3.0.04 and Oracle 10.2.0.4 Linux.

    That's because the inaccuracy of ROW_SCN.
    I suggest you turn off Preferences - Database - ObjectViewer - Use ORA_ROWSCN (as I did the very moment we got the option).

  • Oracle SQL Developer 3.0: PL/SQL debugging of anonymous blocks: ISSUES

    Hello,
    I just downloaded the Oracle SQL Developer 3.0. I have been using the EA releases as they came into existence and was happy to see the released version. So I immediately tried to debug an anonymous block (something I did not try to do in the EA releases), and nothing happened.
    The "Debug" was grayed out and the key-chord "ctrl-shift-F10" did nothing. I found this forum:
    Re: 30EA1: anonymous block debugging?
    and followed Vadim Tropashko's advice. This did nothing for my anon. block but worked fine for the simple example.
    So I started to whittle my anon. block down to find the culprit, here is a repeatable breaking point for me:
    declare
        stmt1 long;
        stmt2 long;
        stmt3 long;
        stmt4 long;
        p_data varchar2( 500 );
        i      varchar2( 10 );
    BEGIN
        STMT1 := 1;
        STMT2 := 1;
        STMT3 := 1;
        STMT4 := 1;
        --the moment this is in the block "Debug" is no longer an option
         select
            SendDocumentResult
           into
            p_data
           from
            XMLTABLE( '/data'
                    PASSING
                    xmltype.createxml( '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><data><SendDocumentResult>test</SendDocumentResult></data>' )
                    COLUMNS SendDocumentResult varchar2( 1000 ) PATH 'SendDocumentResult' ) ;
    end;The moment I have the SELECT INTO ... XMLTABLE() it fails (a normal SELECT INTO works just fine).
    Is this a problem with my environment or is a problem with SQL Developer 3.0.04. Looking over K's comments, it seems the debug worked for 'simple' blocks, so I wonder if this is just out-of-scope...
    My environment:
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
    CORE     11.2.0.1.0     Production
    TNS for IBM/AIX RISC System/6000: Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.1.0 - Production
    and Oracle SQL Developer
    3.0.04 (Buld Main 04.34 with bundled Java) on a Window's XP box.

    Thanks, I'll survive. Just my luck, the first item I try to anon. debug didn't work! :)
    thanks, hopefully this problem will be few and far between

  • Anonymous Block in SQL Developer

    I am using SQL Developer 3.1x and trying to run a pretty simple Anonymous block and am having trouble declaring a variable. This block runs successfully:
    set SERVEROUTPUT on
    --declare
    -- V_CRT := CHR(13);
    begin
    for t in (select owner, table_name from dba_tables where owner = 'ABC123)
    LOOP
    DBMS_STATS.GATHER_TABLE_STATS(t.owner, t.table_name);
    end loop;
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Statistics Calculations complete');
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Begin Record Counts');
    -- DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(v_crt);
    -- DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(V_CRT);
    end;
    If I remove my comments in an effort to include my Declare statement, I receive: PLS-00103: Encountered the symbol "=" when expecting one of the following
    How do I declare / initialize the variable "v_crt"? Admittedly this is a VERY basic Block but I just started to build out a more "robust" procedure and am getting stumped.
    Thank you for your help!

    The symbol *:=* is for assignment, not variable declaration. Just give the variable name and then its type, like this:DECLARE
      V_CRT VARCHAR2(13);You can give it a default value if you want to.DECLARE
      V_CRT VARCHAR2(13) := 'Hello';Looks like you want it to be a carriage return character.DECLARE
      V_CRT VARCHAR2(1) := CHR(13);

  • SQL Developer and Blocking View of Other Users' Objects

    I am using SQL Developer in a classroom environment. My student users can “see” Other Users objects. They cannot modify, but none the less can see the structure and data.
    I only want the users to be able to see their own objects. Is there a privilege that needs to be revoked? (In using SQL Plus command line, this was not a problem.)
    Thanks.
    -Karen

    Karen,
    From sysdba account (sys/system). Run following and verify for that particular user grant is revoked. May be exit from sql developer and log back in or refresh view.
    YOu can also potenially revoke all the privs from all non admin uses i.e.r even connect/resource roles and grant them back.
    revoke select any table from yourschemaname;
    revoke connect from schemaname;
    revoke create session from  schemaname;
    revoke resource from schemaname;
    Then just grant privs as need basis
    grant connect to schemanme;
    grant resource to schemaname;
    grant create session to schemaname;

  • SQL Developer blocking vs non-blocking

    Hi,
    Is there a way in SQL Developer 3.0 to have a non-blocking SQL call? In Oracle Forms we can choose between blocking and non-blocking SQL Net connections to the database. Does SQL Developer have the same capability? If so where exactly are those options hidden in the preferences menus?
    Annoyed,
    ScottK
    Edited by: ScottK on Jun 1, 2011 11:20 AM

    Hi ScottK,
    SQLDeveloper locks access to individual connections when they are in use, if you want to simulate
    some aspects of non blocking behaviour you can use other connections.
    The following features might help:
    Use a different connection name back to the same schema in your database - it will be treated as an independent connection and 'blocking' on this connection will not affect your other connections.
    This can be achieved temporarily in the worksheet by:
    ctrl shift n
    which creates a worksheet with new connection independent of your existing worksheet connection
    though connected to the same schema and database.

  • SQL Developer dropping first column in a SQL SELECT

    Am not too certain who to report this to... but I just noticed that SQL Developer will not return the first column in a SELECT statement when there is a comment just after the SELECT reserved word when running the query in the SQL Worksheet. For instance:
    SELECT -- > HEADER INFORMATION STARTS HERE <--
    w.stu_id HDR_STU_ID,
    w.wiser_id HDR_WISER_ID,
    iep.wiep_id HDR_WIEP_ID,
    sis.wisis_id HDR_WISIS_ID,
    FROM wiser_exit exit
    INNER JOIN wiser w
    ON exit.wiser_id = w.wiser_id
    INNER JOIN wiser_iep iep
    ON w.wiser_id = iep.wiser_id
    INNER JOIN vw_wiser_iep_sis sis
    ON iep.wiep_id = sis.wiep_id
    will just return columns 2 - 4 (HDR_WISER_ID, HDR_WIEP_ID, and HDR_WISIS_ID), and NOT column HDR_STU_ID.
    I verified this by running the same query in SQL Commands in the SQL Workshop of APEX, and the resultset returned all the columns including HDR_STU_ID.
    Just ran another quick test in SQL Developer, and get the same results from a SELECT against a single table:
    SELECT -- > HEADER INFORMATION STARTS HERE <--
    county_cd,
    odd_even_flg,
    street_name
    FROM dime
    Did not return the county_cd column.
    I know, it's just a minor quirk, but I thought I would mention it.

    John,
    Thank you. I replaced the '--' comments with the '/*' '*/' style and it picked up the first column.
    I guess I'll just have to break an old habit I've been doing for years for comments. Dang, I hope all that old code doesn't break...
    Thomas
    Spoke too soon. I followed up by checking what Oracle's 'Oracle Database 10g The Complete Reference' had to say about the issue of using '--' for comments and under '-- (Comment)' it says "-- tells oracle a comment has begun. Everything from that point to the end of the line is treated as a comment. These delimiters are used only within SQL itself or in PL/SQL ..."
    So I guess I can continue using '--', but need to keep in mind that in certain circumstances it might not work as expected. YMMV

  • Debugging PL/SQL blocks in SQL Developer

    Is there any way to debug blocks of PL/SQL in SQL Developer by setting breakpoints in the code? I'm using SQL Developer.
    I'm trying to debug some fairly complex PL/SQL blocks - they are not procedures or functions and so I'm unable to run them in debug mode.
    p.s. Apologies should have posted this in the database forum really.

  • Limit users to execute "SELECT" statemes only from SQL Developer

    Hi:
    Is there a way to control what SQL command can be executed from SQL Developer?
    I am trying to limit users to execute "SELECT" statements only from SQL Developer.
    I believe SQL*Plus used to have the product profile where I can control what SQL command can be executed from what user.
    Thanks in advance.

    There's nothing special in sqldev to enforce privileges, the database does all that already. See the database documentation on the GRANT and REVOKE statements. Basically, you would only want to grant SELECT privileges to your users...

  • SQL Developer: View menu selections Reports and Connections not working

    Downloaded latest SQL Developer May 9 updated version and my dropdown selections from the View menu for Connections, and View Reports do not work. However, Snippets does appear when selected. Hate to lose some of the User Defined reports I had created. Any help would be appreciated.

    Don't know if I get what you're saying: the entries Connections and Reports from the View menu don't work?
    On top of the connection tree, if you get one, aren't there the two tabs with these options?
    If you're unable to view the whole tree, you're installation would be corrupted. Install from scratch in a separate folder, first without migration to see if that resolves the issue. Then you could do the same with migration to retrieve all previous settings and connections.

  • SQL Developer find-replace in selection replaces everywhere when using scope Prompted

    SQL Developer version: 4.0.0.12
    I didn't test this in 3.x, might be interesting to do so.
    How to reproduce:
    - copy paste the the following example text to your SQL Developer worksheet
         test
         test
         test
    - Select the first line
    - open the find and replace dialog

         - If you click "yes" multiple times, it will also go over the non-selected instances.

    My guess is that once the find-replace dialog closes to show the hover-dialog, the selection is lost since the worksheet lost focus.
    So, store in memory what lines where selected, don't re-read that information from the worksheet.
