BMP to ASCII conversion

Hi,
We have a scenario to convert BMP image to ASCII format.please let me know is there any function modules is available.
Else is there any other way to convert BMP>Text-->ASCII or BMP>TIFF>Text->ASCII.
Please provide the Function Modules to this relation or any other solution for this.
Regards,
Raghava

Thanks for the code. It works well when I run it in JRE 1.6 but fails in JRE1.4 with a NullPointerException. The problem is with this line:
bufi = ImageIO.read(in);
I believe JDK1.4 does not support reading a bmp file format. Is this the problem? And if so, is there a Java work-around apart from migrating to JDK 1.5 or 1.6?

• Time comparision of ASCII conversion VS Unicode conversion

In general how does the runtime of a Unicode conversion compare to that of the ASCII conversion? For example, you perform the Unicode conversion on the same hardware on which you completed the ASCII conversion. The ASCII conversion takes 20 hours. Does the Unicode conversion take a similiar time?
thanx
Mark

Hi Mark,
first an answer, that comes only now, because my user was somehow locked or whatever ...
How long does it take compared to the ASCII CPC ?
As you are a latin-1 customer I guess, you could make use of the InPlace version in both attempts.
The InPlace Unicode CPC Export will take 6-7h or the time of the Ascii Export if this was longer. The reload will take about 3h only.
The major problem is on some other edge:
The combined upgrade only works fine if you run all the scans and this will take several days ... even when they are "pretty useless" in your case. Therefore, I would recommend an ECC6 upgrade without unicode and then the unicode conversion directly afterwards - in a short special technique, that I used several times already.
If it is "just" from 4.6C ASCII to ECC 6.0 Unicode, the week will be fully sufficient including all backups - which can sometimes run in parallel. (at least with my ideas)
I did something like that from 4.6B ASCII to ecc5 Unicode on one weekend from friday evening until sunday afternoon. (for sure, depending on the systemsize)

• Downtime for EBCDIC to ASCII conversion

Hello,
we have performed successfully an EBCDIC to ASCII conversion for a client's development system.
The total downtime was about 24 hours.
The customer though, refuses to have downtime of their production system, since it severely affects their systems.
Is there a possibility not to have any downtime for an EBCDIC to ASCII conversion ?
We were thinking as alternatives to build a second productive system, do the conversion there and after finishing, to apply journal receivers from the real production system. This would minimize their downtime to the backup time of the production system and the time needed to apply the journal receivers ?!?
Has anyone performed such a task ?
Would this be feasible (we would have to apply journals from an EBCDIC system to an ASCII system)
Thank you very much
Katerina Psalida

Hi Katerina,
applying journal changes from the EBCDIC system to the ASCII system will not work for several reasons, primarily because the journal keeps track of the journaled tables through an internal journal ID, which will not be the same after the EBCDIC to ASCII conversion. Technically it would not work because the data in the journal entries is kept very low-level, so a conversion from EBCDIC to ASCII during apply is not implemented. Also, the journal entries are based on the relative record numbers in the table, and after the conversion, the relative record numbers will not necessarily be the same.
I am not aware of a zero-downtime conversion option. You can speed up the conversion if you use the "Inplace" conversion option. Did you use that when you measured the 24 hours downtime at the test system? If not, you should give the Inplace option a try. Depending on your data, it could reduce the downtime significantly.
Kind regards,
Christian Bartels.

• EBCDIC - ASCII Conversion for XI File Adapters

All:
Does XI File Adpater have built-in capability to convert EBCDIC to ASCII and vice versa? We also need to handle pack decimals. All mainframe file based integration scenarios require this capability.
If there's no built-in capability available, are there any Java APIs available from SAP XI bundle some where.
Thanks and appreciate your feedback.

Hi,
Unfortunately, there is no built-in EBCDEC-ASCII conversion in XI. There are examples when you do a search on GOOGLE.
The java function can be used in either java mapping or adapter user-module.

• String to Packed ASCII conversion

Hi,
Can anyone provide any examples or Algorithm to convert 'ASCII' to 'Packed ASCII'
Packed ASCII format is used in HART protocol
Thanks.

Hi,
Packed ASCII is noting but a data compression technique.
HART makes limited use of data compression in the form of Packed ASCII. Normally, there are 256 possible ASCII characters, so that a full byte is needed to represent a character. Packed ASCII is a subset of full ASCII and uses only 64 of the 256 possible characters. These 64 characters are the capitalized alphabet, numbers 0 through 9, and a few punctuation marks. Many HART parameters need only this limited ASCII set, which means that data can be compressed to 3/4 of normal. This improves transmission speed, especially if the textual parameter being communicated is a large one.
Since only full bytes can be transmitted, the 3/4 compression is fully realized only when the number of uncompressed bytes is a multiple of 4. Any fractional part requires a whole byte. Thus, if U is the number of uncompressed bytes, and T the number of transmitted bytes; find T = (3*U)/4 and increase any fractional part to 1. As examples, U = 3, 7, 8, and 9 result in T = 3, 6, 6, and 7.
The rule for converting from ASCII to Packed ASCII is just to remove bits 6 and 7 (two most significant). An example is the character "M". The full binary code to represent this is 0100,1101. The packed binary code is 00,1101. The rules for conversion from packed ASCII back to ASCII are (1) set bit 7 = 0 and (2) set bit 6 = complement of packed ASCII bit 5.
Note that, with some exceptions, HART Slaves don't need to do the compression or know anything about the compression. They simply store and re-transmit the already compressed data. Again, this is an instance where the more difficult software is placed in the device (Master) that is more capable of dealing with it.

• Unicode and ascii conversion help needed

I am trying to read passwords from a foxpro .dbf. The encrpytion of the password is crude, it takes the ascii value of each char entered and adds an integer value to it, then stores the complete password to the table. So to decode, just subtract same integer value from each chars retieved from .dbf. pretty simple.
The problem is that java chars and strings are unicode, so when my java applet retrieves these ascii values from the .dbf they are treated as unicode chars, if the ascii value is over 127 I have problems.
The question. how can i retrieve these ascii values as ascii values in java?
Should I use an InputStream like:
InputStream is=rs.getAsciiStream("password");
Is there a way to convert from unicode to extended ascii?
Some examples would be helpful, Thanks in advance.

• Database to text/ascii conversion

Please excuse if this is the wrong forum. I need to convert an Oracle db to a text file. Preservation of the exact format of the db is not critical, although desireable, but the entire contents of the db in text format (headers aside) is. Is there a filter or migration utility that will easily do this? Conversion to html or xml would be acceptable. Thank you in advance.

This is not the right forum, and the question really doesn't make sense. There's no simple mapping between a relational database and a flat text file.
You can generate XML from an individual table of the database - see the XML developers kit for more details.

• Hex Ascii conversion Problem

Hi.
I am working on a project where I send commands to the serial port. I am using the java.comm.*; library and for now, using the provided sample program to send and receive commands.
Before using java, I used a program called terminal.exe, to send commands such as:
$71$00$00$00
$71$40 (hex code)
the second line works fine when i convert that to ascii text to send, but the first line does not. I am having trouble with the 00. I have tried strings such as NULL, NUL, null, nul, and others to no avail.
Anyone have any ideas to what I can try next?
Thanks for the help.

Don't you just have to send the three characters Dollar Sign, Digit Zero, and Digit Zero? Or does that terminal.exe program convert the $nn things into a single byte?
If it's the latter then just send 0. Not the character '0', the byte 0. You're sending bytes anyway, right?

• ANSI / ASCII conversion

Please post in any views about converting ANSI file to ASCII file.
Deepa Datar

Actually, I have developed an application, where the client writes to a file from Telnet client in windows. When the user types the characters its stored in the file. When the client types in backspaces or delete keys etc. the ansi format of the keys (backspaces and del etc.) are aswell stored.
so I want to convert the file to ascii.
OR
I want to buffer the stream of the file data to be stored in the file, and modify the stream data based on the keys entered by the client.

• Java Unicodes and ASCII conversion

Hi,
Does anyone know where I could find the unicodes for the ascii codes from ascii 0 to ascii 32 as when I try printing characters using S.o.p("\n"); it does not seem to work for some reason (to give a new line. So I want to use the unicode values but I cant find them anywhere.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
John Loughran

The Unicode values should be 0-32 also.
If you are having problems writing line breaks, try writing a whole carriage return + line feed instead of just the line feed, like:
write("\r\n");
Some text editors and viewers don't like just plain line feeds. I believe that using a PrintWriter to write the data should translate CRLF's for you.

• Writing the ASCII value of a character found in a .txt file

I have a program that reads in a file and outputs certain characters to a new smaller file. The program works fine (thanks to some forum help) but I now need to print the ASCII value of the characters that are written to the file.
The problem I'm having (besides writing the ascii value of the char) is that the Unix .txt file has some weird properties. When I run the program on a .txt test file that I created with spaces in it, the program ignores the space characters.
Yet, when I run the program on the Unix file it wites the 'spaces' to the output file. That is why I want to write/print the ASCII value of the "blank "character in the Unix .txt file.
I already serached the forum and did a Google search for Char to ASCII conversion but I didn't find anything.

Thanks I didn't even think to try and cast it to an int...
The tool I'm using to create my .txt in windows is Notepad.
I wrote a program to simply copy the original (3GB) Unix file and terminated it early so I could see what was there. What I found was some text and symbols and a lot of space between brief bursts of text. I can't really copy and paste an example because the amount of space is too large, it's basically a 3GB unformatted .txt file...
Unix file was created on: unknown
It sounds like the .txt file that I copied from the Unix box was formatted differently. But I thought that the formatting had more to do with end of line issues, not blank space between characters. Because a blank space should be seen by my program and ignored...
Here's the ASCII value of the "blank" spaces:
Character Line Number Character Number
[ ] [1] [17] Ascii Value: [0]
[ ] [1] [18] Ascii Value: [0]
['] [868] [2066] Ascii Value: [39]
[,] [877] [186] Ascii Value: [44]
[,] [877] [276] Ascii Value: [44]
Also, the Ascii value printed for the blank spaces looks like the number zero here but it looks like it has strange points on the bottom of it in my output file. It looks like the extended ASCII character 234 Ω
