BOFC: Slow performance via excel link

Hi!
I am trying to gain some insight into why the company i work with´s BOFC implementation is performing poorly.
Both data input and report generation is suffering, with relatively simple reports using pivot-cubes taking 30-45 minutes.
At worst it can take up to two hours to upload new data.
Web interface is not having any issues.
I realize this is not much to go on, but in general, do you guys have any input for best practise for the following points:
Data archiving: There has been no archiving of data since 2004. Is it best practise to do this after yearly conso? Is it known to create performance problems if you don´t? Consolidation is for roughly 200 accounts, and db is in the hundreds of gb. Solution did perform better in 2004-6 with smaller dataset.
Reporting: How widely is BOFC excel link used as a reporting tool for controllers? I am unsure if this is the best way to access the data, especially given the freedom you give the user as to how to build your queries. (ie searching everything to find one accounts monthly etc.)
Any help or pointers as to where to look would be appreciated!
I am doing this from a general APM perspective, and not as BOFC expert.

Forget the unfair comparisons to excel, numbers can't even keep up with AppleWorks!
I have a spreadsheet in Apple Works that I use to track revenue and profit for my business. I enter two numbers per day: Total Sales and Total Profit. There are 6 calculation columns that display 7 and 28 day running averages for sales, profit and margin each day. The spread sheet is about 1400 rows (one row per day). No special formatting, no formulas more complicated than if(), sum() and average().
In Appleworks:
Data entry: instant - as fast as I can type.
Create a line chart on 6 columns and 1400 rows: 5 seconds
Memory usage: 11 MB
In Numbers:
Data entry time: Spinning beachball for ~10 minutes after each keypress (yes, REALLY)
Create chart: Unknown, maybe not possible. (Still waiting after 1 hour of spinning beach ball and 100% processor usage)
Memory usage: 1009MB (yes, ONE GIG), plus 2GB VM file (!!!).
I mean, how sad - ONE HUNDRED times more memory usage and over ONE HUNDRED tomes SLOWER. Absolutely terrible. If I were the engineer on this project I would be absolutely ashamed of the performance.

  • Excel 2013: Slow performance loading Excel Sheets

Our customer is migrating from Vista/Office 2007 to Windows 7/Office 2013 and they have the following configurations:
    VDI Windows 7 PRO x64, XenDesktop 5.6 - 2 Core on ESX 5.0, 4GB, VDI on SSD
    VDI Windows 7 PRO x64, XenDesktop 5.6 - 2 Core on ESX 5.5, 4GB, VDI on SSD
    Laptop, Windows 7 PRO x64, 4 core (+HT) i7, 8GB, SSD
Advanced workstation, Windows 7 PRO x64, dual 8 core Xeon (No HT), 32GB, SSD
On all these systems we tested Excel 2013 (patched until today) in both 32-bit as 64-bit versions. Both as AppV and Native install.
When we open an Excel worksheet, approx 220MB with a lot of cell's and rows, Excel takes approx 2-4 minutes to open the sheet, even when calculations do not apply. In Excel 2007, the same sheet opens within 20 seconds and even faster.
    What we tried:
    Auto calculation - Disabled
All fancy stuff in Excel - Disabled
excel.exe.config with settings to bypass some certifcate checks
Disabled and finally removed allmost every plugin
Playing with a lot of options in Excel 2013
To have a cross check, we reproduced the problem at an other client with both Excel 2013 and Excel 2010. And the problem still exists allthough Excel 2010 is not as bad as Excel 2013.
Is there any solution for this problem other then not use Office 2010/Office 2013 and stick with Office 2007 (what has other problems in combination with newer software so is also not an option)?
    Update dec 17, 2014:
Tested with Safe Mode - No solution
Tested with Trusted locations - No solution

    George,
I did do some tests as suggested and I found a huge difference between the handling of Excel 2007/2010 and 2013. I did see some strange behaviour.
I created an Excel Sheet in all 3 environments with identical steps to get identical sheets. After save i discovered the following:
On Excel 2007/2010 the test sheet was:
    Test Sheet.xlsx - 191.894 kB
    Test Sheet.xls - 614.881 kB
On Excel 2013 test sheet was:
    Test Sheet.xlsx - 187.378 kB
    Test Sheet.xls - 336.092 kB
After that we repeated tests, but due to some problems with the Vista/2007 workstation I was not able to continue my tests, and maybe tomorrow I can do the tests there.
When I was testing with 2010 and 2013 i discovered there are some phases when loading a sheet. And there is where 2013 in my opinion does something not good. The tests run from "Open" until the sheet can be "Edited".
Under Excel 2010 the phases can be defined as: Download, Validate, Open, Calculate, Display, Editable
Under Excel 2013 the phases can be defined as: Download, Validate, Open, Calculate, Calculate, Display, Editable
What i noticed is that Excel 2013 does calculate the sheet 2 times instead of one time. And I made some tests with this knowledge.
    Test/Stage
    Type
    Download
    Open/Validate
    Calculate 1
    Calculate 2
    Ready
    Excel 2013
    xls
    0:17
    0:38
    1:15
    1:48
    2:17
    Excel 2013
    xlsx
    0:10
    1:18
    1:49
    2:28
    2:32
    Excel 2010
    xls
    0:27
    3:03
    3:36
    3:42
    Excel 2010
    xlsx
    0:08
    0:56
    1:10
    1:13
    Excel 2010 (2013 sheet)
    xlsx
    0:06
    0:53
    1:09
    1:14
So there is a second calculation loop in Excel 2013 what takes a lot of time. And i discovered some other problems when creating my test sheets where recalcuation makes a mess of it, but that is a later issue.

  • Performance issue when opening DOCX Word Doc with Excel Links

Is this a bug or is there a config setting that can prevent Word from needlessly opening Excel repeatedly (upon initial open of a DOCX Word doc) when pre-existing links should NOT be updated. The behavior is good using 2003 formats (DOC & XLS),
but varies significantly (~100:1 range in performance) depending on the test scenario (see below) using DOCX with XLSX.
We can't move our environment to the new XML formats until we can find a fix. We were led to believe Microsoft knew this to be a bug in Office 2007, but it has NOT been corrected in Office 2010. Omitting a detailed explanation for why we need to
do this, here's our test scenarios:
-Currently testing Office 2010 Pro Trial version on WIN XP SP3. (We have found similar results using Office 2007 with Win7 or XP).
-Word Option Deselected/DISABLED: "Update Automatic Links at Open"
-The Word Doc contains 100 linked Excel tables and is 130K in size (DOCX).
-Each link points to the same 10x10 cell range in one Excel Workbook located in same directory as the Word Doc, although other tests using separate directories produced similar results.
-The Excel Links were inserted into Word via Paste Special/Paste Link/MS Excel Worksheet Object.
-The workbook (XLSX) is 15K in size.
-All Links are set for "Manual" update, our testing showed no difference if links are set to "Auto".
-Again, Word is set to NOT update Automatic links when the document is opened.
-Results shown below are for local hard drive test.
-Network response times are slightly greater on 100mb LAN
-Word is completely restarted prior to each test to make sure there's no application caching involved.
LOCAL DRIVE RESPONSE TIMES TO OPEN THE WORD DOC in Docx format:
    1. Open the Word Doc from Word with Excel closed - 175 seconds (Excel appears to be opened and closed once per link)
    2. Open the Word Doc from Word with Excel open & workbook closed - 33 seconds (Excel appears to be accessed once per link)
    3. Open the Word Doc from Word with the linked workbook already open - 7 seconds (Excel appears to be accessed once per link)
    4. Rename Excel XLSX workbook so that Word can't find it. Then open Doc the from Word. 1-2 seconds (Excel does not appear to be invoked)
    5. Repeat ALL of the above scenarios 1-4 using DOC and XLS files. These files are created with "Save AS" option based on original test files and then re-pasting the links.  1-2 seconds to open the Word Doc (Excel does not appear to be invoked)
    Summary
Using DOCX/XLSX, if Word can't find the linked spreadsheet it gives up and performs nicely during file-open. Otherwise, Word performs needless, time-consuming access to Excel, and in the worst case, opens and closes Excel repeatedly in the background.
Testing with DOC/XLS formats gives good performance across all scenarios.

It is a known bug and one for which AFAIK, there has been no fix.  The only way that I could get around it in a particular application was to do something like save the linked information as document variables and then on opening the document recreate
all the information.  My memory on exactly what I did is a bit hazy, but I can go back and check if you are interested.

  • Word 2010 with excel links is very slow

    Hi..
One of our groups uses an word file that has many excel links in it. Ever since we upgraded to office 2010 .docx format the word doc takes forever to open, it seems to get hung on the excel links and it keeps retrying these links until it fails. In the backround
you see excel being opened and closed many times . sometimes you can wait for 20 minutes for the file to open. If the file has 10 excel linkes and some of those links are bad or even on a different network, it still gets hung on those links and tries to open
    them
The strange part is if we save the file in 2003 mode (.doc) and try to open it's fine. We are running word 2010 sp1 fully patched.  This happens on all our machine. Somehow word 2010 it not good at quiting when trying to open links..
    help.. thanks

    Hi,
If the option to Update links automatically on open is enabled, then users are going to see some slowness when opening the files because Word is trying to update links.
Even if the links are set to manual, users may still see some slowness when opening the files.
You can try the following suggestions to see if it helps. These will need to be set on the machines where the files are being opened.
(1). Disable the setting for Update automatic links at open.
To disable the option, in Word, click on File, choose Options.
    Click Advanced.
Uncheck the option "Update automatic links at open.
(2). Change the links to be manual instead of Automatic.
IN the Word document, click File.
On the right, choose Edit Links to files.
Change the links in the file to manual if they are set to automatic.
(3). Look at the following article and try installing the hotfix and applying the registry key listed in the article.

  • Export to Excel, via a Link on action page

    I have two questions.
    1) How can I export to excel, via a link.  So for example I have a form  and a user clicks submit and I cfoutput the data in a table on the same  page (action page is the same as the input page).  Now, once the data is  output, I would like a link on that same page so the user can click and  it will export the table to Excel.
    I have tried:
        <cfheader name="Content-Disposition" value="attachment; filename=test.xls">
        <cfcontent type="application/msexcel">
        <cfoutput query="qTest">
        <table>
        <tr>
        <th>Account</th>
        <th>Amount</th>
        </tr>
        <tr>
        <td>#qTest.ACCOUNT#</td>
        <td>#NumberFormat('#qTest.TotalAmt#', "_(999,999,999.99)")#</td>
        </tr>
        </table>
        </cfoutput>
But once the page is loaded it tries to export automatically.  How can I  get it to export via a link?
Also, someone suggested wrapping the cfoutput in a <cfsavecontent  variable="xyz"> tag, but once I do that, how do I put the "xyz"  variable into the <cfcontent> tag?  Or where do I use it?
    Thanks guys

Here's some additional ways that you can format your output Excel Spreadsheet using CSS - I just copied this from one of my applications to give you an idea. Outputting to Excel is really nice because you can email the file off and you can put links into the cells or whatever. I normally display on the screen, then have the Excel Output button and just copy the whole query over to the Excel output page - it works for Office 2000 to 2007, haven't checked it on later versions. I kept this simple, but you can do all sorts of things with the Styles to make it look pretty. I did not include the query stuff as that would just clutter this up, but you'll get the picture.

  • Field merge via Excel upload?

I decided to create a new string for this question, though I had found a related article where I initially made a posting (I can't now edit or delete my original posting - "actions" menu doesn't open for me, PC and Mac, Chrome and FF):
Using Field Merge to Dynamically Display an Image
The post above outlines pretty much exactly what I want to do, but I'm missing something -
Here is what I'd like to do: I have some customer information that I want to merge to an email; the information is not something I want to necessarily retain with my contacts.
We're using Excel to upload lists, as these are contacts not currently in our database. I created a new field merge, and inserted the merge into my email. Creating the field merge requires linking the merge to either Contacts, Accounts, Events/Event Sessions, or CDOs. My original assumption was that I'd need to create a CDO, which I did. So I created the field merge, tied it to my CDO, and inserted the field into the email.
When I then go to test the email, I upload my test segment. In matching fields, I can't match the additional customer data fields from Excel to fields in Eloqua - I had thought maybe the CDO fields would appear as options for matching.
So, my question is, how do I get the Excel data to match up to my merge field in Eloqua?
Thanks for any help you can give!
    Colin

    Here was the outcome:
You can't perform a merge via Excel upload (ie - trying to create a new segment via upload that contains data to be merged) - I was on the right track, that this needs to be done via CDO.
    1. Create your CDO, upload your Excel file, and map contacts to the data card
         - Create a new CDO, adding the extra fields you want to capture
         - Specify "Email Address" in the Display name, Unique ID and Email Address fields. I also set the Group By field to Email Address, and the Entity type as Contacts with field again set to Email Address.
         - When uploading your Excel file with the records you want to merge, make sure to map the uploaded contacts to the data card (Custom Object > Upload Custom Object Records). In the resulting wizard, in step 4 - Upload Actions, be sure that the Map data card checkbox is checked. Not real sure why you'd ever not want this - it seems to me you can't do much without it.
    2. Create your field merges Email Field Merges
         - map these to your CDO fields
    3. Insert the field merges into your email
That's about it - if anyone has additional info or corrections on the above, let me know. Hope this helps -
    Colin

super powerfull.... Part of an AD in SBS 2008 Premium... single NIC card 4 ports / 3 ports disabled. single IP... no VLANS... server is able to resolve ANY pc, DNS record with no problems... able to resolve DC by name, able to receive GP, able to update, able
to do everything that I can think of.... EXCEPT... anything I open, word, excel, QuickBooks, IE.... takes forever to open... after the application is open is fast but to open anything takes 3-4 minutes.... open ticket with Symantec all looks good, created
lots of exceptions for antivirus/real time scanning, open ticket with QuickBooks: files look good application was removed and reinstalled to be sure all was done correctly... check the binding order for the disabled NIC; the active one is TOP option, no errors
at all in event viewers for system, application, setup, no errors at all in DELL management tool, no hard drive errors, no controllers errors.... this server is replacing an old dell poweredge 2008 STD with 24GB RAM... the old DELL opens the same applications
way faster than the new one... same Quicken version; old server opens Quicken in seconds, new one 3-4 minutes..... Real time monitoring NEVER goes above 1% for CPU and 3% for memory utilization.... one more thing... removed antivirus 100% restart... same performance
    without antivirus.....
Any ideas will be great as of how to troubleshoot the slow performance....
    Thank you!

    Hi,
As Sam suggested, please check if there any issue occurred in hard drive.
On current situation, please also refer to following steps and troubleshoot, then check if we can find more
    clues.
Please check if you have installed all necessary updates for the Windows Server 2012 R2.
    Please
perform a clean boot to check if there has software conflicts.
Please use Resource Monitor to troubleshoot and check if we can find some more details.

  • Slow Performance Forms 10g !!!!

    Hi,
I have migrated several forms from 6i to 10g and i use a 11g Database.
Most of the users accessing from different countries complain of slow performance but the basic idea of migration is to get a better performance. My users mostly work on laptops.
I am unable to find where the problem is. Is this might be due to network traffic since they are accessing via internet or any server related issues. Please help me to find and fix the problem and is there any tips for gaining better performance in using forms 10g.
    Regards,
    Suresh

So, were they running on 6i via laptop and accessing via the internet before you migrated ? (ie: was it 6i client server or 6i web forms)
Did you migrate the database too ?
Slow performance as in : it used to be seconds and now it's taking minutes ?

  • Slow performance creating UDT/UDF

When creating UDT/UDF via SAPbobsCOM.UserTableMD and SAPbobsCOM.UserFieldMD OR via SAPbobsCOM.Company.GetBusinessObjectFromXML(...) we experience extreme slow performance. One field of a table takes at least a second to be created.
We already checked the DB/Server, no problems there (in fact, it does not even show up as laggy.
Any hints? Is there so much data to be transported from client to server or what might be wrong?
    Krischan

My setup takes between 8 and 15 seconds to create 65 user defined fields and one user defined table.
As I am able to watch the progress, I experience that creating user defined fields for documents is much slower than creating a user defined field for a user defined table.
Personally I think it's because every time a document udf is created, every document table is altered by mssql (the udfs are physically added to every table).
At least it don't take a whole second per table, which definitly sounds like "too much" to me...

  • Bug report: Energy Manager causes slow performance...

    Very slow Windows Startup..
Energy Manager's plans and the problem occured using any plan as I remember, and it wasn't an issue with the maximum processor state. I had heavy disk usage, especially access to the Page File, which is what the person in the second link I posted also described. CPU usage was low. The disk usage was seemingly not related to Energy Manager (Chrome was usually the worst), but removing Energy Manager completely resolved the problem. If you would find it helpful. I'm quite confident that even with Maximum Processor state at %100, CPU usage was low when it was slow, and that disk access was the culprit.
previously have use 1.0.0.31 or 32 not sure.
    Windows 8.1
Im using Lenovo Energy Management Driver
    1.0.0.28
    4.6.2014

I actually have the same problem.  Sorry to work on a old thread, but...
I've got my Lenovo B50-70 less than 1 month ago, and had switched it to SSD and had set everything up and is working perfectly.  However there are a bunch of lenovo programs that came pre-installed.  This computer is used mainly for work and I really don't like programs that suddenly pop-up and ask you to do stuff, as it is quite distracting, and with Lenovo Energy Manager being one of them so I removed it.  (I did do some research before I remove...)
Everything was fine, until when I try to switch on my wifi (I usually have it off, as I use LAN most of the time)...  For the B50-70 there is a airplane button on F7, which allow the user to switch wifi and bluetooth on/off.  That button was unresponsive...  After some digging it is actually related to the power energy manager being removed.  So I've downloaded the latest version from Lenovo and it was working again...
However though, whenever I start my computer it is taking so long to start...  And I tried uninstalling the power energy manager and it solved the problem...  And I am stuck with either having no wifi on/off ability or a really slow boot, which loses the whole purpose of the SSD.  After you enter your username and password it originally takes around 5~10 seconds to login, now it takes over 1 minute.
I have found this other link, which says Lenovo Power Manager having the same problem.
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Bug-report-Power-Manager-causes-slow-performa...
There is a solution, which you can change the registry to switch a function off.  I've tried it and it didn't work, which is not surprising as it's a different program..  But I am hoping that Lenovo can provide a similar solution for Lenovo Energy Manager...

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • Sudden extreme slow performance

I have run Tiger on this machine for about 6 months with no problems. In the last few weeks everything has started slowing down noticably. The hard disk is running ragged, constantly reading/writing, from looking at the cpu monitor it seems like the computer is not actually using it's ram and is just reading and writing. I tried clearing caches and that worked for a few hours but the machine now seems to lock up after a few hours use. I get to the point where i cannot open menus, switch programs, or even force quit or restart. Everything locks up - spinning beachball - and the hard disk is left constantly writing. I have 9 -15Gb free out of 40Gb on the disk - i assume this is enough. Playing music and safari is no problem. But I am using iphoto and photoshop as well as other programs in the background. This was never previously a problem and ran smoothly. I know it's fairly vague but if anyone can help..

    Hi, Ben.
Thanks. However, it would help to see some of the specific data points from the instructions in those FAQs. Specifically:
    1. You wrote: "(the pageins/outs are about equal) but i'm getting REALLY slow performance across the board. "It still sounds like it is "thrashing."1.1. Did you check the pagesin/pageouts per second as described in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ? The per-second values can only be found using top as described therein.
1.2. Did you check for a runaway process in Activity Monitor per the "Troubleshooting" section in my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ?.
The activity you describe (beach ball, heavy disk writing) has to be coming from somewhere, so checking Activity Monitor as I describe in that FAQ should tell you. Find the process consuming the most %CPU as instructed in the FAQ. Post back the result, i.e. the process name.2. You wrote: "It seems to lock itself up with the hard disk clicking and crunching. Is it possible the hard disk is giving up and so is writing at a very slow speed??? "To check this, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ:2.1. Perform at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure section therein in the order specified.
2.2. Also, review the section therein on "Bad Sectors" to see if the "clicking and crunching" sounds you are hearing are similar to those that generally indicate bad sectors.3. If the disk checks out OK per point 2 above, and depending on what you find in point 1.2 above, the process may be an errant Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

  • Fonction HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION very slow performance in bacth job

    Hi all experts!
Does any one having a problem with slow performance while using the fonction HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION and running in batch mode for a big population of data ?
    I have tried to use
nocommit         = 'X' as parameter in the fonction HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION
    and calling after each update.
        CALL FUNCTION 'BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT'
          EXPORTING
            wait = 'X'.
And the performance is very long.
I also remarque that if we run for a small population like less than 500 employees then it finish within 20 mins. But If I ran for a polulation of 5000 employees then it take more than 6 hours = 3600 mins. ?
    Thanks for your answer.
    Hugo Nguyen

Call Function module 'HR_PSBUFFER_INITIALIZE' After each call to HR_INFOTYPE_OPERATION.
    Refer [link|http://brookshireconsulting.com/technical_update.html] for more information.
I have tried it my own and it do improve the performance,.
Hope this improves the performace for you as well.

  • OCFS slow performance in ImpDP

Did anyone encounter slow performance using ImpDP on OCFS ? We have Oracle RAC 10.2g running in window connecting SAN storage and was formatted to OCFS. We compared the performance of running the same import in Local Drive (NTFS) and SAN storage (OCFS) and found that the time required to complete the import is 10 times than Local Drive (NTFS). Any tuning or troubleshooting that we could do ? Thanks in Advance.

Not aware of ocfs installing automatically when installing CRS/RAC. But then have never used Windows as a production o/s for Oracle. never mind using it to run RAC.
ocfs2 is the latest version as per Oracle's [Open Source project list|http://oss.oracle.com/projects/]. Am not aware of "ocfs 9" for 9i or "ocfs 10" for 10g on Windows.
What do you use ocfs for? Do you have the OCR and voting disks on the file system as files? Do you use it for Oracle datafiles too?
As for the SAN infrastructure being "+okay+" - there's more than that to it. You need some kind of driver on the o/s to interface with the HBA card.. where cables (dual 2Gb fibre?) run into a SAN switch and where the SAN switch is connected to the physical storage system.
A faulty cable can cause performance issue (e.g. reducing the dual path to the SAN via 2 fibre channels to a single one). There could be errors on the switch. The driver could be problematic (older version). Etc.
So there is a number of layers, both s/w and h/w, to check before going "+okay+". Trust that your infrastructure team is jacked up in this regard.
One method to benchmark the import problem is to use NT's performance monitor and monitor the import process. Not exactly sure how you would do it dealing with threads (as a thread in the oracle.exe executable will be servicing the import process) - but this should give you a somewhat accurate figure of the I/Os per second and bytes and blocks per second that the process is reading from the ocfs file system (assuming that you are writing it via ASM to raw devices).
At the same time you can monitor the process for other potential performance bottlenecks.
The only other factor that comes to mind that can impact ocfs performance is the ocfs cluster's communication layer. Like CRS that uses Interconnect for communication between nodes, so does ocfs. On a Unix system this is configured in the +/etc/ocfs2/cluster.conf+ file - and lists the number of ocfs nodes in the cluster and the network interfaces/addresses used for communication.
If this network layer is already quite busy, using it for ocfs2's cluster communication could be a problem performance wise.
You can test this aspect by unmounting ocfs2 (and stopping the ocfs2 cluster communication/heartbeat s/w too) on all but one node and then running the import. As there is only a single node in the ocfs2 cluster, the communication with other nodes is pretty much made redundant.
Last comment - ocfs2 is not slow as a cluster file system. It does a pretty decent job. And its performance is directly related to the h/w it runs on, and also how it is configured. That said, it is not a s/w component that really plays a role in Oracle CRS and RAC as ASM should be used (and is the recommended option from Oracle). ocfs2 at best can serve as a cooked file system for the RAC cluster (only used via directory objects in Oracle).
