Bonobo Gnome2.14 problem :|
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
System exception: IDL:Bonobo/GeneralError:1.0 : Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
Also, I had to make links to libdbus-1.so.2.0.0 and libdbus-glib-1.so.2.0.0 for everyone to work correctly, but this still shows up. Is the extra repo suppose to be unstable?
Well, any help would be appreciated.
JGC wrote:
Could you kill the gnome-settings-daemon and try to start it from a terminal, post the output you get in this topic.
Also, what files did you have to symlink exactly to get which things working?
for symlink, I had to link, libdbus-1.so.2.0.0 to libdbus-1.so.1 and libdbus-glib-1.so.2.0.0 to libdbus-glib-1.so.1, because gnome-system-monitor, vlc, and epiphany werent loading.
I would tell you what gnome-settings-daemon output was but idk the command to launch it, I thought it was gnome-vfs-daemon but that just starts back up once I kill it.
thanks for help.
edit: After a bit of search, I found gnome-settings daemon, here's the output.
/opt/gnome/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon: error while loading shared libraries: libgstbase-0.10.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Some little problems with XFCE
Now that Gnome2 is gone from the repos and Gnome3 is totally inconfigurable I ended up with switching to XFCE and trying to make it look like my old Gnome2 desktop. This works quite good but there are some little things that were easy to manage with Gnome's configuration tools and are a bit trickier to achieve with XFCE.
1. [Unfixable (patch exists, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7176)] The workspace switcher applet doesn't allow to switch workspaces with mousescroll though the appropriate option is selected in its settings. I think that this is related to the fact that I'm using Compiz and it has its "viewports" instead of the workspaces since with XFWM everything works properly. Maybe there's a way to make it work with Compiz though?
2. [Solved (controlling gmusicbrowser via dbus: http://gmusicbrowser.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=dbus_api)] I'm trying to make the multimedia keys of my keyboard work which itself is not a big deal. But XFCE doesn't offer actions to control the media player like "next track" or "play/pause". I'm using gmusicbrowser and couldn't find out how to call these actions through the shell so I don't know what command to assign to the media keys.
3. [Unfixable (workaround: Guifications, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7591 )] The nice notification bubbles have "Show" buttons in Pidgin's libnotify notifications but they don't do anything when clicked: neither open a new chat window nor focus to an already opened one. Might be a Compiz effect again, but seems to happen with XFWM, too.
4. [Unsolved] I can't find the xfapplet-plugin neither in the repos nor in the AUR. Has it been removed together with all the other Gnome2 stuff because of depending on gnome-panel? If so, how realistic would it be to maintain appropriate AUR packages?
5.[Solved (by activating the "Prompt on logout" option and a launcher for xfce4-session-logout)] I thought, I would have solved this problem but now it appears again: I'm unable to deactivate XFCE's session saving. I disabled all checkboxes in the first session settings tab and manually edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml and its equivalent in ~/.config to look like
<property name="general" type="empty">
<property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>
<property name="SaveOnExit" type="bool" value="false"/>
<property name="AutoSave" type="bool" value="false"/>
</property>
and then removed the cached sessions from ~/.cache/sessions while no session was running. After the next boot everything was ok (apperently because of removing the cached sessions), but the boot after this one was wrong again (last session saved). Is there any success story concerning deactivating the session saving?
Thanks,
PhotonX

If I remember correctly there is a thread here on the forums where some user had the idea to make a repo for the whole Gnome2 - but then gave up since this would be unmaintainable. Don't know whether the chances are better for some single GTK2 apps. At least I've found file-roller2 on the AUR but who knows how long it will rest there...
R00KIE: Yeah, that's a Compiz issue, see the bugreport in post #4.
onexused: Thanks for the hint! Unfortunately the gnome-deps, gnome-panel and gnome-panel-bonobo are already gone from this repo, but it's a start though.
alez: Nice idea, I used them on Windows years ago and totally forgot about their existance. Will try.

Some of the packages are still in the official repos, so it's bigger than it could. Also maybe one could compile some things with less deps (like remove the evolution thing from the gnome-panel deps). But still looks like much bloat for a single package. What do you think?

Installation problem: Central Instance 6.40 Oracle on Linux 32
Hi everybody, I ran into some basic problems with an installation on Redhat EL4 with SUN SDK 1.4.2_12
here is where sapinst stops after selecting the java dvd:
somehow the getting the right Java home seems to be the problem, although environment variables are set...
SAPinst component stack:

var webas = new WebAS({sid:context.get("SID"), j2eeStandalone:context.getBool("standalone")});
if (webas.getAccountData(WebAS.SIDAdm).exists) {
return;
if (context.get("JAVA_HOME") == "") {
if (installer.onOS400()) {
installer.getCD("J2EE");
context.set( "JAVA_HOME", os400_getJavaHome() );
} else {
var versions = Java.readVersionFile(installer.getCD("J2EE"));
context.set("JAVA_HOME", Java.getBestHome(versions.minVersion, versions.maxVersion));

[SOLVED] Problem with cron and unison
I've got a very strange problem I cannot solve.
I have set unison to synchronize my laptop (mercure) against my home computer (jupiter). It works really fine.
I can run it from the terminal:
unison -batch CERTES
and it runs good.
I have set ssh keys so that id doesn't ask me for a password. And that runs fine too because if I do ssh to jupiter, I log in without any password.
That's what the unison profile looks like:
[jordi@mercure ~]$ cat .unison/CERTES.prf
root = /home/jordi/CERTES
root = ssh://[email protected]//home/jordi/Macbook
After this, everything is ok.
Then I set a cron job so this is done once an hour everyday using crontab -e:
0 * * * * /usr/bin/unison -batch CERTES
And every hour I receive this mail:
Contacting server...
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied, please try again.
Permission denied (publickey,password).
Fatal error: Lost connection with the server
Ok then, this seems like cron can't log into jupiter with ssh as I thought. So I modify /etc/ssh/sshd_config to put this option:
PermitUserEnvironment yes
I do the same on mercure, even if I think it's useless, but...
I always receive the same error and I can't get the 2 folders synchronzed.
Before my hard drive crashed a week ago, I had unison running by cron and it was working nice, but now I'm unable to do it again...
Does anyone has a clue about what's happening and how to solve it?

A lot of vars are different, but they refer to the Gnome environment. I can see that SHELL, TERM are different, but I don't know what can make the difference.

Problem with application directories on JDS - Solaris 10 11/06 sparc
I am running a fully patched JDS on a Sun Blade with Solaris 10 11/06 sparc.
After installing, removing, and re-installing Sun Download Manager 2.0 (web start version) I am having problems with JDS application menus.
I used File Manager (probably accessed through the This Computer Desktop icon) to move around directories under applications:///. This information is saved in ~/.gnome2/vfolders. Folders available from the Launch menu under Applications were all messed up, but I solved this problem by removing all contents of ~/.gnome2/vfolders and restarting JDS.
Now, when I enter the This Computer icon on the Desktop, and click on the Applications icon in there, there is an extra Applications icon there that is not associated with any application and cannot be removed (when I try and trash it, I get an error saying something about "not on same file system"). Also, when I enter the Internet folder under Applications, there is an extra Internet icon in there that also cannot be removed. These extra folders are not seen when accessing the Applications menu from the Launch menu. How can I clean up these "bad" launchers, or folders, or whatever they are, that appear to exist only under the Applications directory accessible through This Computer (computer:///)?
Thank you...Maybe the answer is here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-0918/6n3aglfdl?l=en&a=view&q=location+of+applications-all-users
To Add a Menu Using Menu Files
To add a menu for all users, perform the following steps:
1. Create a directory entry file for the item that you want to add. Create the directory entry file in the /usr/share/gnome/vfolders directory. For more information about directory entry files, see Directory Entry Files.
2. Locate the vfolder information file for the location where you want to add the menu. For example, to add a menu to the Applications menu, locate the file /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders/applications-all-users.vfolder-info.
3. In the vfolder information file, add a <Folder> element for the new menu. For more information about vfolder information files, see Vfolders and Menus.
The next time users log in, the menu is in the assigned location. -
Booting problems with systemd, lvm, linux-ck-corex
Hi everyone,
since Friday I got some complications while booting my system.
I use systemd, pulseaudio, bluez, network-manger, gnome and gdm as login manager.
Every partition (root, home) without the boot and crypted swap partition is within a lvm volume group.
Xserver with gdm starts but the login mask does not appear. (only the background, mousepointer, topbar with clock, energy etc. are shown)
Switching to the getty2 works, but after typing username and password, nothing happens.
Only some messages from systemd are poping up, saying it couldn't mount my home partition (timeout).
That explains why I couldn't login.
Shutting down the system via the powerkey works.
Starting via a system rescue disk, mounting everything (including my home partition) and chrooting works fine.
Journalctl shows that there are more problems.
The network-manager times out.
Gnome-shell with consolekit-daemon and Pulseaudio fails to communicate with bluez over the dbus.

If you're using an initrd, you may not have the appropriate modules installed. If you're not using an initrd, then the kernel probably needs LVM support compiled in (not as a module) and could be solved by fixing that. I have never used the ck-patchset, but this should give you an additional data point.
Also comment=systemd.automount will be deprecated soon as I understand it; if you have a need for automounting, x-systemd.automount should be used instead. -
Problem when upgrading from Gnome 3.0 to 3.2 [SOLVED]
Hi,
I've been fighting for 2 days trying to fix this problem: after having upgraded from Gnome 3.0 to 3.2, I can't login anymore (I have this message telling me that something wrong happened and I should try again).
Here is what I tried:
- Removing ~/.config ~/.gconf and ~/.gnome2
- Connecting with a fresh new user
- Reinstalling gnome-shell
- pacman -S cogl
- http://justin.jetfive.com/gnome-32-arch … in-problem
But unfortunately it didn't help...
Here is the output of my ~/.xsessions-errors : http://pastebin.com/4dbMFDsY
[FYI I'm also running xfce4.8]
Any idea?
Thanks in advance!
Last edited by mirelsol (2011-10-20 18:07:53)I had the same problem when I did the upgrade the very same day of the release. And the solution for me was to login using my battery. For some reason, GDM won't let me in if I'm plugged (I know it sounds crazy, but it works for me)
Best of luck -

Your answer is on the very last page, but in summary the problem is that the --retry-wait option is no longer supported in aria2 which you can see in the code you pasted.
/usr/bin/aria2c: unrecognized option '--retry-wait=2'
Xyne has already updated the code so you can either get the code from his site or wait for the mirrors to sync. -
[Solved]Problem with deskbar-applet
Hi to all, i'm having annoying problems with the deskbar-applet in gnome. I've installed it with pacman and no error occurred during installation but I can't perform any search on the web through the search-engine of firefox. They don't appear in action's list at all. And i don't manage to use the deksbar-applet with tracker. I compiled tracker from abs with the option --enable-deskbar-applet=auto. and copied tracker-handler.py and tracker-handler-static.py in the .gnome2/deskbar-applet/modules-2.20-compatible/ directory. Any advice??
Thanks
Solved. I had to copy tracker-module.py in that directory. Bye
Last edited by oportec (2007-12-14 16:35:28)Thank you, headkase, you were right about it! Removing "ck-launch-session" solved my problems. I also removed "dbus-launch" because I didn't have it there originally, I had added "dbus-launch" to exec line just today as I had read somewhere that it might help (it didn't)...
So, I'm going with "exec gnome-session" and everything works, thanks.

Solaris 9 / GNOME 2.0 / SunPCI II problem
Hello. I have Solaris 9 on a SunBlade 100 with SunPCI II (running Windows 2000 Professional). Both OSes have the latest patches. When running under Gnome 2.0 the SunPCI/Windows requires multiple clicks of the mouse to affect any controls. For example, launching IE from the taskbar ought to take one click and it does this when running under CDE. But under Gnome I have to double, triple, quadruple click before it will launch. I cannot open the start menu because one-click does not affect it, but double-click opens and then immediately closes it. Other controls have similar problems. Native Solaris/Gnome apps are not affected - only Windows/SunPCI. Has anyone run into this strange problem, and if so what is the solution? Thanks.
Viren Patel
Chemistry & Biochemistry
University of Texas at AustinPersonally I think JDS3 is a bit awkward and
certainly not as nice to use as Gnome2. I was
disappointed to see the CDE apps menu has disappeared
too, I had to figure out where certain apps are on
the HDD, something I never thought to do in the past.
Specifically I was looking for SMC, which I
eventually found in /usr/sadm/bin/smc.
I was under the impression from Sun's own
documentation, that Gnome would be the replacement
for CDE, I figured they'd included it with latter
Solaris9 installs as a stop gap. I also noticed that
when I installed Solaris10, I saw a message box
mention KDE a few times so I expected to see an
option for KDE as well. Dunno if it's hidden away
somewhere but I'd sure like to know what it was all
about.I wonder whether one can get rid of some of the JDS stuff and just use the GNOME part. I never understood why so many of the desktop environments try to immitate Windows even to the extent that there is a launch (aka start) button.

[Solved]Gnome settings problem
Hi all.
I have some strange problems with Gnome 3.2, it is hard to explain but these screenshots should:
http://bildr.no/image/1012613.jpeg
http://bildr.no/image/1012614.jpeg
In the first picture you can see that something that is selected by default is pink, this happens all over Gnome. In the second one you can see that in nautilus when I want to select with the mouse it creates a white block so you can't see behind. I know it is a settings problem because the same doesn't happen on a new account, but the problem is that I have tried to delete .gnome2/ .gconf and .config but once I start to customize again the problem reappers. So I was wondering if there is anything else that I can try to delete without deleting the whole account or if there is some settings that I could to to remove this problem.
Thanks in advanced

Hi there,
I have used the Sun Solaris 10 x86 for while and I have found some problem that I don't know how to solve. So I am asking expert here for some help. Here is my error message:
<div class="pre"><pre>
Window 1:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Somethings, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The Settings Deamon restarted too many times.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
Window 2:
There was a problem registering the panel with the bonoboo - activation server.
The error code is: 3.
The panel now exit.
Wnidow 3:
Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to register the file manager view server.
</pre></div>
The error messages show up sometimes but now all the time. Does anyone here have the solution for this? I'll appreciate every useful solutions. Thanks a lot!I just removed the locales using the same tool and I can log in now.
Does anyone have any idea why this is or the correct way to install extra locales ?
Thanks -
X server crashes randomly on ThinkPad X201i with GNOME2 as desktop env
Hi folks,
I installed archlinux with gnome2 on my new X201i, which has intel graphic chip.
But the gnome2 (i.e., the xorg server) randomly crashes, quitting to command line suddenly, with all my work lost!
The sad thing is, I manually 'startx' after booting, without using gdm. So the workaround of 'moving gdm to the end of DAEMON list' doesn't work for me.
And I even cannot stably reproduce the crash: it just happen randomly, about once per day.
The DAEMONs I start at boot time are:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal network netfs crond alsa laptop-mode ntpd)
The MODULEs are:
MODULES=(fuse tp_smapi vboxdrv)
The command I use to startx is: (in .xinitrc)
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session
I hereby copy part of the information from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Hi, I have a very strange problem with desktops and dashboards something else. For example, when I am on desktop 2 and i go to desktop 1, when I click with the mouse on it, it goes again to desktop 2. or when I am on desktop 1 and I go to ddashboard, it returns again to desktop 1 when i click to something in the dashboard.
but, if i am on desktop 3, and i go to desktop 1 throguh desktop 2, there is no problem. the same if i go from desktop 2 to dashboard.
I hope i've been clear enough to let you understand this... explanation =P
Anyone can help?My system has started "freezing". Actually, usually when I'm browsing the net, Chromium stops loading pages. Conky stops updating, and usually I can't switch to another programs. I can't start xkill from menu, menu opens but nothing starts. If I run "ls" etc in Terminal, nothing happens
I can however control+alt+F1 to CLI, but if I try to login nothing happens.If doesn't help even if I kill X (I started it with startx). And if I don't kill X, I can't go back from CLI with control+alt+F7, there's just a black screen.
I'm using Nvidia drivers also, and XFCE4. This started happening some time ago, I think I was using Gnome2 back then. And I have updated my system, and this has happened at least with 3 kernel versions. There's nothing on logs. Well, actually, there's "TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 6881. Sending cookies" errors on everything.log. But those don't happen when system freezes. And sometimes Chromium stops loading pages but other programs don't freeze, I think it's a problem with cache or something.
Not really sure if this everything happens because of Chromium. I think I'm gonna switch back to Firefox and see what happens. Usually I'm running Chromium, Opera (use it just for a couple of pages), couple of Terminals and Kaffeine. -
This has just been so frustrating, but I want this to work so please help if you can.
I have been fine getting setup right up to setting up my DE.
Here's whats happening:
If I use gnome 3, after some changes (dont know exatly which may be the cause) I just get a black screen with cursor after startx. Once this occurs the only thing I can do to get it back is to completely reset the gnome config's using this:
rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity .cache .dbus .dmrc .mission-control .thumbnails ~/.config/dconf/user ~.compiz*
found here:

Gnome is initially showing everything extremely big for my screen (more on this later) so I need to have scaling turned down a bit. (I like 0.8)
If I use enlightenment, about half the applications use a font for menu's, title's, sometimes the text (always some different combination it seems) that is way too small to read. I have tried adjusting font scaling and it scales everything EXCEPT for the font that is at issue. I may be wrong, but I believe this is related to Qt in some way. (These items appear and scale fine in gnome)
Things that may be related:
I'm using NVIDIA proprietary drivers (becuase I will need CUDA support if I ever get this thing running).
Display is 1080p Plasma TV connected with HDMI and is reporting 43x43 dpi which I understand is atypical for linux displays.
Output of $grep WW /var/log/Xorg.0.log

$grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show any errors.
I have literally spent weeks reading/googling/reinstalling/etc. and these problems persist.
I have not been able to find anyone that has identical problems, although I have tried many remedies for similar problems but none have helped.
Any ideas are appreciated. If you need additional or more detailed output I am happy to oblige.
Thanks,
HThank you so much! I now have an acceptable DE to start from. Not sure how I haven't tried this before as I have read about changing the DPI, (actually read those exact threads) but regardless... Thank you!
If this ever comes up in someone's search, the solution was to simply add the lines:
Option "UseEDIDDPI" "False"
Option "DPI" "72 x 72"
in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file within Section "Screen".
(72 cause I like it small, but still readable)
