Book printing - Unique Workflows? - Cross-Posted from Aperture forum

(Cross-posted. I think this post might be of interest to iPhoto users as well)
I am exploring the book printing features in Aperture. My goal was to build the book in Aperture and get this into iPhoto so that I could use MyPublisher to print the book. MyPublisher currently has a 50% off coupon for orders over $50. iPhoto needs their plugin to upload to MyPublisher instead of Apple when the BuyBook button is chosen. (code is MAC2550 - good though Dec 31). The design features in Aperture are rudimentary at best. It's simple to customize the design for photo placement, adding and deleting photos, resizing, etc. The type design features are not simple to customize, though. However, with patience a suitable design can be made. You can add and delete text boxes at will but these will always default to the template's built in style. I continually had to reformat the type by right clicking on the selected text and applying my preferred style. One trick when cutting and pasting text is to place the cursor one letter in from the beginning of a preformatted line, select the remaining text and paste - this will pick up the current style rather than default to the template default. Then delete the leftover first character of the line. From Aperture I printed the book to PDF, being sure to choose letter size and borderless paper option. Once book is printed to PDF I opened in Acrobat and "saved as" to PNG. In the PNG options I chose 600ppi (the default of 300ppi might have been just fine for quality, not sure). Saving to PNG creates an individual file for each page. In testing Apple's Preview software for this I found it would make a nice PNG - but of just one page at a time. I then imported all PNG pages into iPhoto. Within iPhoto create a book. I used "Modern Lines" with double sided pages. To create the cover (it's actually a label that is adhered to the linen hard cover book) I had to import the actual cover photo used in Aperture to recreate a new design based on the "Modern Lines" template. I then recreated my pages using the template. The key step being to assign the single photo page design for each page. For each page I dropped in the corresponding PNG file which included all type and images created previously in Aperture. One minor point when adjusting the placed PNG images in the iPhoto template is the option to fit photo to frame size (an option when right clicking on the photo). When fit photo is selected the image gets resized very slightly. I opted not to use this feature as I thought the resizing might compromise quality. I then clicked on the "buy book" button and the file was assembled and sent to MyPublisher. Since I had the 50% coupon I opted for the leather bound book option and ordered two 24 page books for $53.74 which included $9.98 standard FedEx fee. As for quality I'll have to wait and see. I'll post back once books are in hand.

It is important to realize there are two aspects to an index.
1) Topics
2) Page References
Topics have no relation to the text of the actual document. Topics can
be imported from one InDesign document to another. Also, creating topics
from a list of text is trivial. Just type all the words (or place them
from a text document or Word doc) and then press Ctrl+A to select all of
them and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+[, then delete the text.
Page references, however are not as simple. These have to be created at
each place in the text where you want the page to be referenced it the
index. This *can* in fact be done Word if you are using the text from
the Word document.
What you really have to watch out for is that when you want to create a
page reference you have the "Reference" radio button selected in the
index panel. Otherwise you will just be creating a topic. It is best to
work with hidden characters turned on so you can see and make sure
InDesign created an index marker in the text after you created your page
reference.

Thanks for the information that you provided.  However, I already have a stamps.com account and when I log in, it shows my balance.  It just will not let me print netstamps.  I am coming up with an eror message:  There was an internal processing error.  Please retry or manually check the firmware updates.
My printer has the most current firmware.
This is a great feature, but I cannot get it to do anything but let me log into my account using my user name and password.    do I need to set up another account, because that would be redundant if I have to.
Any information tha you can provide would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

  • ICC help for printing to my Canon IP5200 from Aperture

Am trying to find some ICC color profiles for my Canon IP 5200r printer. Since my reinstallation of Aperture my Canon profiles for the IP 5200 have disappeared. I looked for them on my old printer profiles.  i did find some profiles that i had made mysef but no canon provided profiles.
I have gone to the Canon website and look for ICC profiles on their site and cannot find any. Any suggestions on what ICC profile settings to use to print from aperture to my canon 5200r.  Any suggestions

re-instaled canon driver and the canon ICC profiles showed up profiles in aperture

Howdie peoples, after checking out the bios revisions on my SLI cards I have found they have different bios revisions. Would this play any part in bad performance?.
    Card one :
    05/18/05
    05.70.02.11.10
    (Purchased this one Sept 05)
    Card two:
    05/12/05
    05.70.02.11.01
(This was purchased Jan 06! and later bought from eBay).
Any input would be great.  biggthumbsup
    Thanks
ps Anyone know where I can get the MSI 7800GTX 512 rear venting fan/heatsink assemblies? (they take up two card slots)

I thought the part number is already on the sticker of the GPU. Gd luck.

  • Workflow for Posting from Multiple Locations

    Workflow from work and home:
Does anyone have a preferred workflow to suggest for me. I do most webwork from the workplace but also need to do some postings remotely from my home computer (I have DW on both). Is it useful (or possible) to maintain two local sites, one at work and one at home? Or should I just pull down the files needed to do postings from home (and later getting/downloading the updated pages from the remote site at work)?
Web version of DW on the horizon?
On another, but relevant topic, is there any future prospect of a web version of Dreamweaver that a user could log into? This would simplify remote postings when working on computers where DW is not available. If this subscription service were available it would be very useful.
    Many thanks for any suggestions.

That's how I have worked for several years. Full copy of site at home and work. Check out files, edit then check back in. Enabling Check In/Check Out in DW is important for version control.

No-one here can answer that with any accuracy. Only Adobe and its testers who are bound to Non-Disclosure Agreements.
If DW is not available, there are other options including Adobe ICE:
http://www.adobe.com/products/incontextediting/ (free preview, soon to be a subscription service: preview is US-only at present for whatever reason)
and simple browser based Content Management Systems (CMS) such as

  • SQL firewall rule to restrict traffic from only one Azure PaaS website (cross-post from websites)

(This has also been posted on the websites forum)
    Hi,
I have been asked to configure the firewall on the SQL PaaS instance to only allow traffic from a specified PaaS website that is within the same subscription. I can't see any way to set a static internal IP for the website, is there a way to identify it
for the purpose of the SQL Database firewall rule?
    Thanks,
    Karina

    You're right, KG! Sorry.
    This article mentions a reserved-IP:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn690120.aspx
    It specifically mentions your scenario:
You want to ensure that outbound traffic from Azure uses a predictable IP address. You may have your firewall configured to allow only traffic from specific IP addresses. By reserving a VIP, you will know the source IP address and won’t
have to update your firewall rules due to a VIP change. This is especially helpful if you want to configure your firewall before you create your cloud service.
The only thing I'm not confident on would be if it works with Azure Websites - it does mention cloud services, though. If you have further questions, I can give a shot myself and see if I can get a working example.

  • How can I make a proper timeline posting from Aperture?

I'm frustrated by the fact that sharing a version to the facebook timeline does not quite do that. Instead, it uploads to an album and timelines that fact. The remarks you supply don't show up on the timeline, someone has to click on the image to see them.
Other than exporting to the file system and then uploading to facebook manually, does anyone have a solution? Perhaps a third-part plugin?

If you are concerned about others, here, seeing the full signature, then post a cropped version of it that includes both the darkest/most-legible and lightest/faintest parts along with enough surrounding paper color to understand what you’re dealing with.   If the signature is part of a larger document page scan or photograph then please specify if you want those parts to be enhanced the same as the signature or not.
Enhancing a signature generally involves both increasing the contrast so that the paper is white and the ink is black and perhaps sharpening the edges, but if the signature is contained in a larger document and you don’t want the rest of the document enhanced then more painstaking measures are needed, probably involving layering and masking and selecting and filling—isolating the area where the ink was, and filling or otherwise darkening just that area, leaving the paper color intact.
It would also be useful to understand what the end purpose of this enhancement is—to better read or identify the signature for your own personal or information or informal use, or something that needs done for forensic or archival that should better preserve the relative intensity of the strokes and grain of the paper.
If you have access to the original document, sometimes there are indentations that can help identify areas of pressure where no actual ink color remains, and very oblique lighting, that skims the surface, is better suited to reveling such details.

VFDs come in two tastes, some with some without output filter.... Have you tried another one, maybe the filter doesn't work ?
My guess about the grounding cable was just because people are laisy. If you put in and out the VFD, why not only change the cabling for the three phases and keep the ground where it was ?!..   I'm pretty shure that there is a big nice grounding screw right beside the VFD output, and it makes sense to use it
How is the reading if you (can) place (hold) the sensor near the VFD driven motor without contact to the rigg?
According the sensor: 90-95% grounding problems ... BUT just an idea: If the sensor acts with metal objects, then by a change in the electric or magnetic field (field weakening by eddy currents...)  the sensor produce. What if the one of the switching frequences of this VFD correlates with the frequence of the sensor?    Just like some TVs goes mad if your new poversaving electronic lamp hits the IR main frequence

  • Artifacts in QuickTime 6 (cross post from OS9)

I often play (and encode) videos in QuickTime in OS9, and they have artifacts on playback, i.e. little colored squares that appear randomly and fade away after a few seconds. It appears to be a playback problem only, i.e. the artifacts are not actually encoded in the video--if you replay the same clip, you get different artifacts! For a long time, i assumed it was my video memory going or something, but i just installed OS9 on another Mac (G4/AGP) and... same thing!
Is this a known problem with QT? Or is it an OS9 problem?
The artifacts appear on video encoded using the Apple MPEG4 codec, the DivX5 codec, or the 3ivx codec. However, they DO NOT appear when the video was encoded using the Sorenson MPEG-4 codec for OS9. Someone else (everyone else?) must have experienced this.....

Are you saying that even if the video was encoded properly, QT can generate artifacts on playback if the processor isn't quite fast enough? Shouldn't it drop frames (i.e. stutter) instead..?
Yes, to an extent. This normally only happens in the case where the data rate is unreasonably higher that necessary and that can be handled by the platform involved (i.e., not simply slightly higher) which I don't really consider a case of being "encoded properly" as you put it. In this case, what you normally see is a series of frame freezes being displayed which may or may not contain block pixelations due to incomplete decoding of sub-matrix blocks (i.e., frame decoding is exited/halted before the frame being processed could be completely decoded. In this case entire segments of the movie containing dozens to hundreds of frames are being dropped/skipped between the display "freezes." This is an extreme case which is very much less common than excessively low data rates and/or using excessive keyframe intervals which produce pixelation artifacts that either fade when the next keyframe is generated or fades as the predictor-corrector algorithm oscillates back above the critical minimum data rate allocation. As to the specific differences between Sorenson and QT encoding implementations, I have always asumed the former was targeted more for low data rate use while the latter was targeted more for quality consistency over a wider scalability range. However, I may be wrong here and since you have provided no specific information as to what settings were used, how you define a "proper encode" and have not provided specific example clips for analysis, about all we can really do at this point is guess at the cause of your issue.
I'll try it on my somewhat faster 1GHz G4 and see if that plays okay, but i still can't believe a 500 MHz G4 (the one generating the artifacts) could be too slow to play a 320x240 MPEG-4 video properly.
I might agree with you if I knew more about how you encoded the content and the settings used. Most of the problems I am discussing are more common with MPEG-4 Part 10 encodes which is 2 to 2.5 times as efficient as MPEG-4 Part 2 but more CPU intensive. Basically this means the QT version of MPEG-4 Part 2 requires 2 to 2.5 times the data rate of a QT MPEG-4 Part 10 file to achieve the same level of quality but can process the content with the same or less effort. Have you tried comparing the same content encoded differently in a frame by frame comparison using the same player app?

  • Computer on the fritz - cross posted from Finder category

I don't even know if this is the right category for this topic, but I guess it's close enough.
Here's the problem. At seemingly random times of the day, for unknown reasons, my computer stop communicating properly with my keyboard. Or maybe the other way around, or possibly something else all together. What I first notice is that in Firefox (because I'm one of those people who's online all day), when I go to open a new tab, I can't type in the URL bar. It's highlighted, I've got the typing cursor and everything, but when I try to type in the URL bar, I get that "doop" noise the computer makes when you're trying to do something you can't do.
The first time, I tried quitting out of Firefox and starting it again, but that didn't work. For one, Firefox went into safe mode without warning. The computer wouldn't let me hide the program with command+H, I had to use the mouse and right click. Then I noticed it did this with other programs too. So I decided to restart my computer.
Upon restart everything seemed normal. Then, just ten minutes ago, it happened again. Except this time, when I clicked on the program icons in the dock, a Finder window of my Applications folder popped up showing that program highlighted. When I went into iTunes to search for a song, pressing just H hid the program and then opened a picture that was sitting on my desktop as I typed the rest of the search word. So I restarted again and we seem to be back to normal.
Dear Apple community, what in the world is wrong with my computer?!

Except this time, when I clicked on the program icons in the dock, a Finder window of my Applications folder popped up showing that program highlighted.
This can be done with a control click on a Dock Icon, and then select Show in Finder (try it to see).
If this is happening on its own, then maybe the keyboard is defective, an in a 'loose' control key.
If you had another keyboard handy it would be great to substitute it in order to see if the original one is flaky. Though I don't expect you to have a spare KB but if you could borrow one, would be nice.

  • Partitioning causing bootcamp problem? (x-post from bootcamp forum))

My boss's 17" MBP has 2 partitions - Mac OS (35 gb) and Vista (65 gb). The larger partition is formatted NTFS as it must be for Vista.
Attempting to revert to one partition via Bootcamp shows the "Restore the startup disk to a single volume" button grayed out and unavailable.
Verify disk and repair permissions run cleanly. The only thing of interest I can see on his system is that the internal hard disk is partitioned MBR. My iMac with XP is partitioned GUID. The boss is a little vague about the installation process he went through but is sure Bootcamp created the 65 GB partition onto which he installed Vista. Vista runs great, but he's done with the experiment and wants the disk space back.
First, why doesn't Bootcamp want to do this? Second, any suggestions short of cloning the Mac OS partition to an external device, reformatting the internal hard disk, and cloning back?
    Thanks.
    John

    Hi Kappy,
Thanks for the comments. I didn't think an MBR-partitioned drive could boot the Mac OS, but here's a system doing it. Disk Utility: Select the disk (not either volume) -- DU says Partition Scheme: MBR partition table. An identical system that I bootcamped says GUID in the same place, as expected.
Since there's reason to believe that he repartitioned the drive (if not, how did he get it partitioned MBR?), it's entirely possible that bootcamp didn't create this partition, despite what he says. We are ready to clone to external, re-partition and reformat, and clone back.
    Thanks,
    John

  • HP B8850 Page Size Error Printing from Aperture 2 (or iPhoto)

I am trying to print on 13x19 (B+) size paper to an HP Photosmart Pro B8850 printer. I get this error when printing from Aperture --> "Page Size Error: Paper size selected in the print driver does not match the paper loaded in the printer IN tray."
    Aperture 2.1.2
    Mac OS X 10.5.6
HP Photosmart Pro B8800 Series Print Driver 2.3.1
I can set the paper size to 13x19 (B+) in the Aperture print dialog, but under the Print Settings button there is no option for paper size, only paper type. So apparently the size that the printer is expecting in the driver does not match the 13x19 that is loaded in the printer. I was able to verify this by leaving all print settings for 13x19 and loading an 8.5 x 11 sheet in the printer. It pulled the paper through and started printing, but the print was scaled to fit onto the 8.5 x 11!
So in other words, the way I'm seeing it, even though I am setting the paper size for 13x19 in Aperture's print dialog, the printer thinks it's suppose to print on 8.5 x 11.
To make matters worse, there is no Page Setup menu item in Aperture to set the paper size in the print driver directly. I would have assumed that the Aperture print dialog was "smart enough" to pass the page size parameter to the HP printer driver, but that is apparently not happening.
I spoke with HP tech support and they were surprisingly helpful. With their help I was able to print on 13x19 paper with HP's bundled software package, but I had to export my file from Aperture and import it into HP's software. Now that's a good first step which assured me there is nothing wrong with the printer itself, but obviously I purchased Aperture to use it's more elegant and supposedly streamlined interface to make my prints.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Any solutions? Suggestions? I have searched this forum, HP's support forum, DP Review, Google and not finding much. I can't believe I'm the only guy trying to print on 13 x 19 from Aperture using this printer. I suspect it's not printer specific though. Could be my system I guess. I plan on calling Apple Care depending on what type of response I get here.

I don't know if this may help, but recently we had a discussion about problems with Aperture's custom paper size not working correctly:
The solution was to define a paper size outside Aperture:
In any application, for example Preview, try to print something and the print dialog comes up. At this point click on Paper size and choose Manage Custom Sizes. You can define a new paper size here. This new custom size will then appear when you go to Aperture print dialog under paper size. It solved my problems with custom paper sizes here, for some reason (a bug?) defining a custom paper size within Aperture itself did not work correctly for me.

  • How to transfer pics from Aperture to thumb drive to print

I have a photo printer that I have to put the pictures in thumb drive in order to print, how I do that from Aperture?
    Thanks

What formats can you print from the thumb drive?
You could export the versions to the thumb drive.
    or
You could try printing to file: Just choose print in Aperture, set up your print parameters and choose save as PDF.
I would try both, and see what works best for you.

There is significant difference between soft-proof in Aperture and PS of the same image (exported as .psd from Aperture). In Aperture the image has some blue/cyan cast and there is no such a problem in PS Softproof.
Prints are consistent with softproofs - from Aperture it looks blueish and more warm from PS.
Why there is such a difference?
