Bookmarks missing cant restore from json file

All of my bookmarks have suddenly vanished. [Firefox also started to crash and would show no bookmarks until I later created a new profile.] I tried....
1] restoring from Bookmarks - Show all bookmarks - Import export - Restore.
[I can see a list of earlier backups of my bookmarks , the Json files, but when I try to restore I get Error 'unable to process the backup file] .
2] using Places Maintenance add-on but it didn't resolve the problem [I tried all the options, several times and I left it for a long time to run, but it did not seem to do anything at all really].
3] creating a new Firefox profile using profile manager, and then tried to restore from a .json via restore backup in bookmark manager. I also tried copying and moving file to a different location.
4] uninstalling and re installing Firefox.
I still have a all the auto back ups of my bookmarks the [.json files, but no .html backups]. If the .json files are corrupted, is they a way I can repair them and restore a back up?
I don't know if it happened after an update or not, it might have been an auto update, and I cant really recall doing anything to cause it.
[I am using windows 7 Home premium 64 sp1, and now have Firefox version 33.0.]
Really hope you can help, many thanks.

Use these instructions to get a copy of the old bookmarks backup
and place it in the new profile. If you need better instructions, just ask.
'''(Open to the old profile)'''
Type '''about:support'''<enter> in the address bar.
Under the page logo on the left side you will see '''Application Basics.'''
Under this find '''Profile Folder.''' To it’s right press the button
'''Show Folder.''' This will open your file browser to the current
Firefox profile. Now '''Close Firefox.'''
Enter the '''bookmarkbackups''' folder. This is where Firefox makes backups
of your bookmarks. Look for the '''jsonlz4''' file you want to restore
(check the time / date / size). Right click on that file and select '''Copy.'''
'''(Close current Firefox, then open to the new profile)'''
'''(Repeat above steps to open the new Profile Folder)'''
Now go back to the profile folder where you started. Rename the file
'''places.sqlite''' by adding '''.old''' to it. Now right click in the folder
and select '''Paste.''' The file you just pasted here, rename it to
'''places.sqlite.''' After you are done, restart Firefox.

  • Bookmarks are not restoring from .json file

I recently had to do some maintenance requiring me to uninstall firefox. Before doing so, I backed up my bookmarks using the method on the site. I created my .json file and then later installed firefox back. When I try to restore from that file, nothing happens. I have the same default firefox bookmarks.

Make sure that the file has a .json file extension. You can verify that via the Properties of the file (right-click context menu).
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

  • Firefox 29 crashes restoring from json

Restoring from json causes firefox 29 to hang , try with FF 27 ,also, same problem.
Have used selecting json from list and by "choose file" option. Have tried many different json files. Same problem. Regrettably , I do not have any HTML versions of these bookmarks.
Acording to FF help, I should be able to close the Library window after selecting the restoring bookmark file, but I just get the busy cursor , and clicking on the X (top right of window) results in crash.
Have tried erasing current bookmarks and did a restore , same problem.
Is there any standalone json-to-HTML converter available??

Well, this is embarrassing. I guess I do have that many bookmarks since I left the "restore" running and returned to it after several hours , it went through. I am not saying it took that long but probably more than a few min.s .
I guess it is time to do some house cleaning after all these years. I have the list since the Mosaic days , so I guess it gets piled up. Some of the sites are probably defunct.
"Your live bookmarks are in the places.sqlite database,...."
I suspected as much since it is also a large file.
Actually, I manually make copies of the profile folder , not just the bookmarks. Actually the whole user directory so settings of other programmes are saved also.
I will try another restore from another json file after work and make sure it really works , so don't close this thread just yet!

Help please. Iphone was Backed up yesterday. But today's backup didn't finish. Now, I have a file (marked today) but it will not allow a restore from said file. And yesterday's is gone. What the hello do I do? IS there anyway to get my sms back post restore/update?

The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu.

  • Can i delete my exported bookmark html file after i have re imported it and merged it with my restore of my old bookmarks? Same with the json file?

I have recently reinstalled my OS on a new drive and have just successfully restored my old bookmarks and imported any new bookmarks I had saved since the OS install. I just want to know know if it is safe to delete the json file i restored from since this was on the old drive I want to format and can I also delete the html file i created by exporting my new bookmarks before i started this process?
    Marc

You can keep a backup copy of that old file or make backups of the JSON backups on the new computer.<br />
You can decide for yourself if you would have a usage for that file.<br />
If all bookmarks have been restored successfully then you won't need this backup and you can create a new backup regularly if you have modified or added bookmarks.

  • Cant restore from rescue and recovery discs

    Hi Guys
I bought a set of Windows 7 64bit Lenovo Rescue and Recovery Discs approx. 18 months ago so I could "restore" my X201 if and when the hard disk died, well the day has come and the discs dont work !!!
I have attempted to "restore" to the new hard disk 3 times and this is now starting to become a joke.
I boot the 1st disk, then I'm asked to insert the 2nd and then 3rd disks, I dont have a 4th disk but the process asks me for one. I believe that this is all working as it takes a number of hours and the drive lights is flickering except when I'm being asked to insert the next disc.
After the final re-boot. following the "Setting up drivers - 100%" on the screen I get a message box that says "Setup cant configure windows for your configuration", this is after I have had the "Starting Windows 7" booting on the screen.
    Has anyone had any experience with Win 7 64bit R & R discs for a X201 ???
    TIA
    NG

I assume your issue is laptop boot mode related.
In order to restore from Lenovo Recovery discs set laptop should be in legacy boot mode. Check out this option in BIOS setup. Unfortunately you'll can't change boot mode later. But this mode just speeds up a boot process only 2-3 secs.
Boot and installation processes don't inform the customer about error boot mode related.
Check out the 1st disc. If it consists a folder like BOOT and files like BOOTMGR and WINRE.WIM (all of them are for boot process) and folder like FACTORYRECOVERY - it's OK and your 1st data disk is bootable too.
If you had partition like Lenovo_Recovery (Q: usually) on your x201 with factory images you could make Factory_Recovery Discs set yourself w/o purchasing it from Lenovo.

  • Cant Restore From Time Machine!

Due to problems I was having with my Mac running slow after upgrading to Snow Leopard when it was first released, the other day I completely wiped my Mac and did a complete re-install of Snow Leopard.
The good news is that my Mac is now back to being very fast and working perfectly. The bad news is that I am unable to restore certain files from my Time Machine drive!
When I re-installed SL I completely blitzed the drive and didn't migrate my old user account from my Time Machine backup because I didn't realise I could. So my old user account was say peakoverload and when I re-installed SL I again called my account peakoverload with the same password as I used before, effectively recreating the same old user account.
I then installed the applications I wanted and set about restoring my files from Time Machine.
I entered Time Machine, went back to the day before I re-installed SL, selected the Documents folder and hit restore. All single files in the root of the documents folder were restored but any files within sub folders were not? To restore these I then had to go into the relevant sub folder in Time Machine, select the files and hit restore. I found that if files were in sub folders I got an error message saying:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some items"
I worked around this and simply restored each file(s)/folder individually.
However I then noticed that my Aperture Library file had not been fully restored showing up as 0KB whereas in Time Machine it's over 7GB.
No matter what I try I cannot restore this file getting this error message:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access Aperture Library"
Looking at the permissions of this file in Time Machine it says that: peakoverload (Me) has Read & Write privilege (but is that the new me or the old me and does that matter?)
    _unknown has read privilege
    everyone has read privilege
If I try to add user privileges peakoverload is grayed out, presumably because it's already added but I can add administrators. However my peakoverload account is an administrator one yet even adding this permission doesnt allow me to restore the file!
Any ideas what I can do to restore this file?

    Hiya peakoverload,
    peakoverload wrote:

Yes, it does matter. Your "old" account, albeit named identically, was pertaining to another build/system. You could do a "get info" on the folders
affected, then change the "everyone" to read & write, apply this to all enclosed items and you should be fine. Prior to that, you may have enter your current password if the padlock on the +get info+ window is locked. But the old time machine backup would have made the backup specifically for the old user account.
NOTE "tinkering" with disk permissions can result in unwanted problems in the new system, so you need to ensure that the old aperture library file was not corrupt.
After you copied your files across, I recommend using disk utility to conduct a "repair disk permissions". That way, you know that your new (old) files will have the correct permissions for current usage.
Let me know how you get on.
NB: Apple's article about time machine backups HERE (and note that your new account would be classified as a "different" Mac.

  • Block corruption - cant restore from backup

    Hi,
we have development database 11.2.0.1. There was problem with storage, and as a result there are two corrupted blocks in data files.
    SQL> select * from V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION;
    FILE# BLOCK# BLOCKS CORRUPTION_CHANGE# CORRUPTIO

I have scheduled weekly full backup and daily incremental backup using EM so now I want to use rman to perform media recovery on corrupted blocks. However rman says there is no backup for affected data files (see below)

I dont understand this, because the backups are performed weekly and daily and all files are at their proper location. When I check the EM backup reports, I see COMPLETED for every weekly and daily backup.
Anyone please could suggest how to repair the blocks from backups ?

Hi people, I am back to this issue. I have found this in the database

I have set up the backup using Enterprise Manager - Schedule Backup.
What I need to know is how to avoid taking backup with corrupted blocks in future. I need such backup to fail.
Thank you for advices and regards.

  • Time machine cant restore my old files

I erased my hard-drive 2 days ago and i have been unable to restore my old files backed up with time machine. Every time i tried to restore the Address book or i Cal, it always says that i already have the same file and if i want to keep both or replace the old one. And if i do replace it, it seems to work but my Address book remain empty.
When i go through my backed files with the time machine machine, i can see some of my old data but i just dont how to restore them. Can anybody tell the right way of restoring the i Cal and the address book??
    thanks

I had something simlar and discovered that the permissions on my backup disk we're completely and remarkably (in that the new owner or the entire backup was a non-administrator user on my system) changed.
My symptoms were like yours: backups from before a certain date not highlighted in white (i.e. not available for browsing via Time Machine).
My restore became a nightmare of knife-and-fork work. Very disappointing.
    Please try this:
Browse your backup disk (i.e. the disk you pointed Tome Machine at) with Finder or Terminal. Down a couple of levels you'll come to a folder containing one subfolder for every backup taken. Go to one of the backups you cannot open via Time Machine (so any 12th Jan backup name will start with "2008-01-12...", and so forth).
Browse into the backup folder. The sub folders to open are:
    1. the name of your hard drive
    2. Users
In the ./Users folder there'll be a folder in there with your username. I f if, like mine, the permissions have been hosed then you'll be able to tell pretty easily.
If you're using Finder then do a Get Info on the "yourusername" folder and tell us what permissions are set. If you're using Terminal, do an ls -la on the same directory and report back.

  • Cant restore from backup point?

After I restored my iPod to factory settings, I did make a backup before which worked perfectly. But after i restored and went back onto iTunes the next day, the backup file wasn't there to restore from. I looked at my backup files in the %appdata% and it was there but it didn't show up in the selection to restore from.
    Help????

Sounds refurbished to me, it shouldn't have previous accounts still linked to it, contact Apple and tell them.

I've just restored my macbook pro and tried to restore from backup Photoshop file, now I get the code Error: 16. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thank you!
    Roferr

    Open the Terminal.app
    Copy and paste:   sudo chmod -R 777 /Library/Application\ Support/Adobe
Press Enter and supply your password if asked.
If that does not work, do a reinstall from the discs or installer.
Migrating Adobe programs from another Mac or restoring from Time Machine breaks the licensing.

    • Mac Mini

My Mac Mini was getting the blinking folder with the question mark. I tried to do a Disk Repair through Disk Utility, but I received tree node errors. I did a backup of my hard drive through Disk Utility, and saved the new Disk Image file (.dmg) to an external hard drive and completely wiped out my mac mini and reinstalled the Apple operating system so that I could access my computer. When I go to Disk Utility to restore from my backup, I am unable to drag my hard drive into the 'destination' field. I am however, able to drag the backup .dmg file into the 'source' field.
I also tried going to Disk Utility > Image > Scan Image for Restore and am given this error: Unable to Scan (Invalid Argument)
Does this mean my hard drive data is corrupt?

You can't do that if you booted from the destination or source drive.
Try booting to Recovery and try again

Just how did you backup the drive?
You said "I did a backup of my hard drive through Disk Utility," So you backed up a disk that did not startup/display question mark? I would expect the backup to have the same problem.
Maybe disk recovery software can get some info
