Boot.ini configuration for a 3 partition drive

So i wanted to create a 3rd FAT32 partition to share files between my windows XP and and OSX lion partitions. I havent been able boot windows XP im sure the issue is with the boot.ini configuation. before any changes were made this was my configuration
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
i have tried changing the 4s to 5s and several other combinations to no avail.

The issue is that once you create the third partition you have wiped the boot loader installed by Boot Camp Assistant. If you read the Boot Camp documentation you would have learned that you can only have two partitions - OS X and Boot Camp's.
You have only two alternatives at this point:
Repartition your entire drive to return it to one volume. Reinstall OS X then create a new Boot Camp partition and install Windows.
Try using the third-party boot loader - rEFIt. You may then be able to keep the third-partition along with your OS X and Windows volumes.
Just keep in mind that you no longer can use Boot Camp Assistant to manage what you now have configured.

  • Relationship b/w sga configuration and boot.ini in windows platforms

    hi all,
i have doubt on sga configuration and boot.ini settings.
    assume the following configuration's
    1.Db is 10g r2.
2.OS is Windows server 2003 ,RAM is 8gb
    3.SGA_max_size=4gb,SGA_atrget=4gb
1.For the above settings i must initialize the /3g /PAE in bott.ini file?
    2. the boot.ini configuration is optional one?
    3. what is criteria to set the /3g /PAE parameter in boot.ini and why?
    4. what is advantage and disadvantage of boot.ini
    please explain.
    Thanks is advance..

    coz in Windows server 2003
When the physical RAM in the system exceeds 16 GB and the /3GB switch is used, the operating system will ignore the additional RAM until the /3GB switch is removed. This is because of the increased size of the kernel required to support more Page Table Entries. The assumption is made that the administrator would rather not lose the /3GB functionality silently and automatically; therefore, this requires the administrator to explicitly change this setting.
The /3GB switch allocates 3 GB of virtual address space to an application that uses IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE in the process header. This switch allows applications to address 1 GB of additional virtual address space above 2 GB.
The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB, unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file. The following example shows how to add the /3GB parameter in the Boot.ini file to enable application memory tuning:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="????" /3GB
so no need to se the bbot.ini files in your case..

  • Solaris 10 x86 boot menu configuration

Is there a way to change its configuration? ...Currently I have WindowsXP installed on partition 0 and Sol 10 on partition 1. The boot menu lets me select between the Windows partition and the Solaris partitions but it defaults to the S10 one. I would like to boot Windows every time unless I specifically tell it otherwise but if I mark the Win partition active, I lose the boot menu - the S10 partition needs to be active.
I tried copying mboot to the root of the Windows partition adding an entry to boot.ini but says: "No active partitions" when I select it at boot time.
I saw that Sol 11 uses Grub. Can I use it with Sol 10 also? If so I'd appreciate help setting it up.
    What are my options?
    TIA :)

    Thanks to your reply.
To be on the safe side, I tried to install Sol 10 on a used hard disk of 20GB that was lying around. Don't want to mess with the other hard disk of 120GB which contains lots of valuable info.
The 20GB hard disk had some bad sectors in the past. Booted the system from CD ROM and the OS started to collect hardware info. Glad it detected video card, monitor, key board and mouse. Proceeded with the installation after completing the intial phase of selecting the country, time and others selections.
After that, I ran into a problem with the following error repeating continously. Had to shutdown the system.
    PCI@0,0/PCI-ide@4,1/ide@0/cmdk@0,0 (Disk0)
Error for command 'read sector" error level - retryable
    Required Block - 22177 Error Block - 22177
    Sense Key: bad block detected
    Vendor 'Gen-ATA" Error Code: 0x8
I will take your suggestion of creating another primary partition on the current hard disk of 120GB with a partition size of 20GB for Sol 10. Will keep the forum posted.

  • Nominal configuration for boot drive and internal RAID setup

Hello, I'd appreciate some advice on the following please.
I'm planning the build of a Mac Pro to act mainly as a photo editing workstation.
    Considering the following disc setup:
Bay 1. 500GB with two partitions - 150GB for OS X and remaining for applications
Bay 2. 250GB XP/Vista for occasional use. All Windows apps/data quarantined on this disk.
Bays 3 and 4. 2x 500GB RAID0 (backed up externally) for data and workspace.
WRT RAM, I've read that 4 matched DIMMs in the same riser is the optimal config, so looking at 4x 1GB.
I'd be grateful for any comments as to whether I'm on the right track here.
    Thanks
    Ben
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I set up a similar configuration for photo editing. First, partitions are not as useful as they were in the pre OS X era. Just load your OS and all applications on the same drive as there is no benefit, as far as I know, to separating them into partitions. Second, your 4 X 1GB RAM should be split between the two risers, not on the same riser. Put two DIMMs in the first two slots of each riser. 4 X 1GB hits a sweet spot in the cost/benefit analysis as long as you don't need more than 4GB. I use Lightroom extensively and 4GB is plenty.

  • ARC path (boot.ini) for SATA on Promise contr. (KT6d)

    Hi!
I've recently purchased and installed my first SATA disk, connected to my Promise SATA/RAID controller on my K6 delta motherboard. It is a ghosted duplicate of my old system disk, and now I struggle with the boot.ini file, which still addresses my old disk for boot of Windows XP, in stead of my new one.
    The boot.ini files reads:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=scsi(2)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    scsi(2)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="NEW Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
The first OS line (multi....) is my old disk, which I have kept for backup purposes. The second line is supposed to be my new SATA disk on the first of the two slots on my Promise integrated SATA RAID controller. Problem is, this disk is not found by Windows XP during boot. I have tried the two following configurations for the ARC path:
    scsi(2)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
    scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
Both without luck. Anyone got any idea how to modify boot.ini to make it boot of my disk (which is the first and only SATA disk on my Promise controller)? The BIOS seems to indicate that the SCSI controller is marked as "2", thus the "scsi(2)" line, but even with "scsi(0)" it fails.
PS: If I boot using my old disk, the new SATA disk pops up, so the disk and controller is fine, and there is only one partition on the disk.
PPS: The actual error message is as follows:
Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Thanks for the tip (and the links) - didn't know the Via controller was better, I'll switch
But, using the VIA controller, it wil still be detected as a SCSI disk, right? In which case I'll still need to know the "ARC path" (on the format scsi(x)disk(y) etc.) for my boot.ini. I guess I could just try the most likely combinations, but if anyone knows which ARC path to use for the VIA or Promise I'd be much obliged
I can still use my VIA SATA even though I am still having regular IDE devices on all my EIDE ports, right? (Meaning, there is no conflict where I have to choose either ATA/IDEA or SATA for my VIA controller, thus rendering one of my EIDE disks unconnected if I enable the SATA?)

  • Hard Drive configuration for speed

I've got a question regarding the best hard drive configuration for my mac pro. I'm looking to increase the boot speed, application load speed and particularly the speed with which hard drive intensive photoshop processes complete. Right now I'm just using some normal SATA II drives. I'd appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on the various options I am currently considering.
-2x 64GB SSD in a RAID 0 for OS X and applications with some large SATA drives for storage
    -4x 300GB VelociRaptor 10k RPM SATA HDD in a RAID 0
-2x 147GB SAS 15k RPM HDD in RAID 0 with some large SATA drives for storage
I am particularly in the dark about the controllers I'd use for each solution. Clearly, I would absolutely require a PCIe card for the SAS drives, but would there be a marked advantage to using a hardware RAID card for the SATA drives over the software RAID in OS X? Also, how easy is it to get the mac pro to boot off drives connected to a controller card rather than the standard setup? And lastly, if there is good reason to use a card, are there any in particular that you would recommend?
    Thanks a lot!

    2. No. Do not make two partitions unless you do not plan to use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows on that partition. If you plan to create a Boot Camp partition then you must partition the drive as one Mac OS X volume. Boot Camp Assistant will then create the Windows volume.
    3. This drive must be repartitioned and reformatted as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Use the graphic resizer to set the desired sizes for each volume as you want. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the first volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Select the second volume you created and repeat Steps 4-6.
    4. Now here I don't know what you think is your best option. You can buy any two hard drives you want. The ones I identified were only an example of what you could purchase for under $300. There are others, slightly more expensive, that would work, and you would still be under your $300 budget. The Samsung drives are good drives and reasonably priced, but they are just one of several alternatives. You should do some checking on your own before making your decision. I'm just giving some guidance, not trying to tell you what you should do. I've provided three sites where you can read reviews and benchmarks before you decide. You need to "own" your decision.
As for how you configure these two drives that's a secondary issue. I would recommend using them for backup. Two possible arrangements are a Mirrored or a Striped RAID array. A mirrored RAID array would create one volume that has a 1 TB capacity. Everything saved to that volume is essentially saved twice - once on one drive then a copy is mirrored to the other drive. This is not what you described in your Item 4. That's not how it works. Anything saved to the mirrored RAID array is saved the way I described it just above. It makes no difference where the files come from.
Now you can use the mirrored RAID array as a Time Machine backup drive if you want, but then you should not use it for other data storage. You would need the entire capacity as backup for both of the 500 GB drives you currently have. A mirrored RAID provides some data redundancy by having a copy of everything one each drive. Thus, if one drive fails the other drive still functions and your data backup is intact. Mirrored RAIDs are generally no faster than an individual drive that makes up the array.
The second suggestion was to make a Striped RAID array. This type of array produces one volume that is twice the size of the the two drives that make up the array. Thus, you would have a single volume that is 2 TBs in size. You can use this volume for your Time Machine backups also. Striped RAIDs do not provide any data redundancy. If one drive fails all the data stored on the RAID will be lost. However, Striped RAIDs are nearly twice as fast as either drive that makes up the array. This would give you very fast storage and backup.
You could also just leave the two drives to operate independently. Use on for Time Machine backups, use the other for more storage space.
Other possibilities abound. It's pretty much up to you to decide what will fit best into your needs today and in the future. Don't feel obliged to do what one person tells you. Five different users on the Discussions will give five different opinions.
I suggest you educate yourself a bit on backup and restore by reading the FAQ about backup and restore at The XLab FAQs.

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?
OS X has software for creating RAIDs by using Disk Utility. Open Disk Utility and select DU Help from the Help menu. Search for "raid" without quotes. You will find information on how to set up mirrored and striped RAIDs using Disk Utility.

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Installing Boot Camp - There is only one partition available for Windows

I have a brand new Mac Mini. Ran Boot Camp assistant and created Windows partition - 80 GB. Then when instructed, inserted Windows XP install disc. It went through some install steps then came to screen where you chose the partition to install Windows. There was only one partition showing - Partition 1. I think that's the Mac partition, so I quit install, removed partition with Boot Camp and tried again, this time setting Windows partition at 32GB. Insert Windows install disc, same result - only Partition 1. I called Apple support, we did it all again - same result. They had me completely reformat my Mac disc with the OSX discs, then run Boot Camp assistant and set partition to 32 GB. Same result - only Partition 1 is available. The Windows install disc I am using is the same disc I used to put Windows on my son's MacBook about 9 months ago.
I need this Mac Mini to run both OS. What to do?

Use NTFS for Windows and buy Paragon NTFS for OS X
You can also try Paragon HFS for Windows
As long as you are using for data and backups, you can leave the drive as GPT too.
I would recommend strongly to always have a 2nd bootable Mac OS drive, only need 30GB partition. System maintenance. Though LIon Recovery Mode finally makes it less but not totally unneeded.
And yes you can use Windows to create a partition.
Boot Camp is too broad. Do you want or mean BC Assistant? not needed but probably possible.
MBR has trouble with 3TB drives.

I think I have discovered the answer to my own question!
I have disabled Adobe Reader plug-in, and can now see PDFs in Chrome.
(Steps: Chrome Menu, Settings option, Click Advanced Settings link, then Content Settings button, then select Disable Individual Plug-Ins, and a list of plug-ins is offered to enable or disable).
I then get a different result depending on whether or not Chrome PDF viewer is enabled - with it enabled I see the PDF document in Chrome, or with it disabled then the option is offered to download it, but either way I can get it it via Chrome without having to run Internet explorer in another browser window.

A blank drive needs to be formatted first, you do that hold c boot (or hold option key boot) from the 10.6 install disk (or Lion USB)

    creating JDBC XA procedures
    instxa.sql completed successfully.
3.Verified that MSDTC service is running on both SQL Server and weblogic machines with XA Transaction enabled and DTC option enabled for both inbound and outbound connections.
4.Copied sqljdbc.jar (version 3.0 downloaded from msdn portal) to "C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\server\ext\jdbc\sqlserver" directory and updated weblogic_classpth variable in commEnv.cmd file.
    set WEBLOGIC_CLASSPATH=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\tools.jar;%BEA_HOME%\utils\config\10.3\config-launch.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\weblogic_sp.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\weblogic.jar;%FEATURES_DIR%\weblogic.server.modules_10.3.2.0.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\webservices.jar;%ANT_HOME%/lib/ant-all.jar;%ANT_CONTRIB%/lib/ant-contrib.jar;C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\server\ext\jdbc\sqlserver\server\ext\jdbc\sqlserver\sqljdbc.jar
Can some one please provide some input on whats causing this and any other steps needs to be followed to implement XA support using SQL Server JDBC driver.

You seem to have done everything correctly and diligently. I would ask that you open
    an official support case.

  • Optimal Hard Drive Configuration for Premiere Pro CS5 and Pro Tools

I am in the process of upgrading a workstation that is used primarily for multi-track audio recording in Pro Tools to use the following Adobe CS5 products for production of promotional videos in HDV (and AVCHD for the web) as well as printed marketing materials for bands and musicians: Premiere Pro, Encore, Photoshop, Illustrator and Soundbooth.
Since Premiere Pro is probably the most demanding application of the group, I have been studying the suggested hardware configurations on this forum with great interest, particularly HARM's suggestions (including his Generic Guideline for Disk Setup) to determine which hard drives to purchase and the optimal manner in which to configure them.
I am upgrading an HP Z800 with dual quad core 2.44 GhZ processors with hyperthreading (16 virtual cores), 12 GB of memory and an overclocked GeForce GTX 470.  Without setting up a RAID configuration (which I cannot afford at the moment), I would like to use the 4 available HDD bays in the Z800 in the optimal manner for Premier Pro, using currently available drives.  I am currently considering purchasing a 300GB VelociRaptor to use as my C drive because of the extended load times and demands placed on the drive by ProTools and the associated Waves plug-ins.
I would appreciate suggestions to improve my following plan:  C (300GB  WD VelociRaptor) for OS and Programs; D (1 TB WD Black Caviar) for Media and Projects; E (1 250 GB WD Black Caviar) for Pagefile (approx. 18 GB) and Media Cache; and E (2 TB WD Black Caviar) for Previews, Exports and Pro Tools audio files.
I have great respect for the knowledge of the members of this forum and eagerly await your suggestions.
    /Bill

I very much appreciate the responses to my email because I know that all of your time is valuable and that you have chosen to use some of that valuable time to help an unknown individual.  This forum is remarkable because of the wealth of knowledge available and the willingness of so many to assist others.
I now wish to narrow my questions to save you time and so that I can get specific advice.  I may not have not been clear that I have already upgraded to the HP Z800 with dual quad core processors and overclocked GTX 470, primarily for the improved performance it will provide in ProTools.  My question now is how to optimize its performance for Premiere Pro CS5.  Based upon my research, I am considering the following two upgrades, but I am open to other suggestions if they would provide better results at a similar cost
    1. I am considering purchasing a 600GB WD VelociRaptor ( WD6000HLXH) for my C drive on which I would place OS (Windows 7, 64 Bit) and programs in an effort to reduce loading times of large programs.  I have two questions: (1) Are members of the forum seeing a significant improvment in program loading times with the VelociRaptor because I am still not convinced that the price performance of SSD's justifies their use; and (2) There are so many models of VelociRaptors now that I want to be certain that I am purchasing the best version for my needs.  In addition to the usual 10000 RPM speed, this model has 32MB Cache and a 3.5" form factor as well as a SATA 6.0GB/s interface (which I doubt my motherboard can take advantage of but it might extend the useful life of the drive with future configurations).
    2. I currently have available for installation in the Z800 the following drives:  (1) WD 2TB Black Caviar; (1) WD 1TB Black Caviar; (2) Hitachi 1TB.  I believe that the Z800 can accept up to 5 SATA hard drives which I will have if I purchase the Velociraptor.  Although I am reasonably knowledeable when it comes to hardware, I have never set up a RAID configuration.  Therefore, it would be helpful if someone could recommend one of the various RAID configurations and brieflyexplain why it would seem to be best for my needs.  I can then focus my research on understanding that one configuration.
I was planning to follow Scott's suggestion for my current 3 drives:  OS and programs on C (WD 600 GBVelociRaptor), media and projects on D (WD 1TB Black Caviar), export files and Pro Tools files (all live musician tracks, no samples) on E (WD 2TB Black Caviar).  However, I have been reading about the benefits of a RAID configuration so I am interested in further suggestions now that I have clarified my questions.
Thank you all for your help.
