Boot time goes from seconds to minutes with udev and systemd

A few weeks ago updated and saw that on reboot I was getting messages from systemd that it was waiting for all my LVM partitions, and then finally that:
'A start job is running for udev Wait for Complete Device Initialization'
This has never happened before and I can't find any information about it in dmesg.
Here is my fstab:

  • A Flaw with LXC and Systemd

    I am running quite a few machines with LXC and systemd.  I noticed one day that one of my more heavily accessed machines was very slow to respond when I tried to log in through ssh.  It sat there for a good 15-30 seconds before letting me in.  No errors were presented, but upon inspection I found that /sbin/init was consuming 100% of a cpu.  We hoped this was a fluke, and that the init was just borked, and monitored it closely.  The time came to reboot the server and when it rebooted, it was fine, but as soon as traffic started hitting it, the /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-logind process was going crazy,pegging at 100%, and then after a day I found it had switched to the /sbin/init taking over as the culprit.
    After investigating systemd and finding that I can list all the units by just typing systemd at the prompt, I found that there were upwards of 15000 scope sessions. (this taking several days)

    The scope sessions are identified by the following lines in the systemd unit list:

    After digging further and finding out how to investigate these sessions, it was as I suspected, these are zombie sessions that have persisted.

    This clearly shows me that the session was started for an ssh connection, but then persisted, even after the user disconnected.
    After stopping the 15000+ zombie sessions, Voila! no more CPU grab by init.  The box is running significantly better, and everything is as it should be.
    I know I have a unique environment, with an application that is connecting up to this server several times a minute just to get data, but that's a problem for everyone.  All my other LXC instances have zombie sessions on them too, and while my connects are not nearly as much, within a year I expect to see degraded performance. 
    I've written a script to find and kill these zombie sessions, as can be done by issuing
    systemctl stop session-c43460.scope
    , but it would be nice if these scope sessions were exiting normally as they should when an ssh disconnect occurrs
    So, I believe this is a problem between LXC and systemd, as the hosts are perfectly fine and no zombie sessions are present.
    Anyone else out there having problems with LXC and systemd? or any suggestions or solutions are welcome.

  • Boot from second hard drive with ZFS in Solaris 10 x86

    The usual menu.lst to boot Solaris10 x86 with a boot environment that contains a ZFS boot loader is this one

    x86.AFAIK there are only two ways to do this. Select the disks via BIOS which becomes a royal PITA in a short amount of time or play with a boot manager such as GRUB until you get the syntax right.
    Personally I put all OS's on the primary disks if possible to avoid these situations and if I have others to play with then you can easily mount them in or set them up as D: drive etc...
    The only exception would be in an enterprise setting where you need to do things such as mirroring but then again in those situations it's only one OS per machine anyways so it's much easier.
    So at the end, I am not sure what I have to configure and what is the procedure to boot from my alternate boot diskTry the grub homepage for the grub manual and hopefully for a mailing list or try a search engine.

  • Slow boot time since updating OS 6 minutes aprox

    I've owned my Macbook Pro since new and it came factory installed with OSX 10.4
    I decided to update to Leopard and used the 10.5.6 disc formatted the hard drive fresh and after installing boot time was around 6 minutes. I tried everything, updating OS, reseting pram all sorts but still slow boot up.
    Then i thought maybe updating to Snow Leopard may resolve this issue but unfortunately still the same problem 6 minutes to boot!

    The concern of which 10.5.6 disc is quite good. While 10.5.6 was available retail, using a 10.5.6 from another Mac model could cause problems with installation.
    And installing Snow Leopard over such an installation unless erase and installed would not solve any problems. If you install 10.5.6 over 10.4, you must use
    the 10.5 disc that looks like * and does not say update or dropin on it. Similarly if you erase and install 10.6 on
    a machine that came with 10.5.8 or earlier, you must use this disc * that does not say Update or DropIn on it, unless it was
    released during the up-to-date program period in the couple weeks before August 28, 2009.

  • While upgrading my 3,2 8 core power Mac , it will not boot. Going from 10.8.3 to 10.8.4. There is no visible video after chime.  I need to get up and running ASAP.  Could the video drivers have not loaded. Please help and thank you. Ps. Main drive ssd.

    The Mac will not boot to a cd, Mac or disk warrior.
    It will run for  10 minutes with no video, then shut itself down.

    Update on this issue. I replaced the video card with an old one that I had and it boots fine.
    Question, if a driver were missing from the update process, would I see anything on the screen at all. I had pure black as if no signal was carried to the monitor. I'm trying to rule out hardware failure, as this card is 1.5 years old.

  • Going From G4 to G5 with Leopard 10.5

    Question: I moved my Hard Drive from a MDD G4, which was running Leopard 10.5x into a G5 Dual 2.0. The G5 booted the MDD Hard Drive and everything is running fine. However, I am wondering if there are items / libraries for a G5 missing in my System Folder since this copy of Leopard was installed on a MDD G4. I know that a G4 is 32 bits, and a G5 is 64 bits (but I don't think there are many items that run in 64 bit on a PPC), therefore, overall the OS on a G5 is 32 bits.

    I think this should work OK. You might have a problem trying to do this with a newer machine, but the G5 did not ship with Leopard and so would have required a retail Leopard version to get there, as did the G4. It's my understanding that retail OS versions contain all the system files needed for machines that shipped with earlier major OS versions, and that all of these get installed on every host machine - I believe that the machine specificity for drivers and other system files occurs when they are loaded at boot time, not at the time of the OS installation.
    There are some user preference files that are machine-specific, and would not carry over from one Mac to the next, even if the Macs were the identical model. To see these files, look in the home>Library>Preferences>ByHost folder. The long alphanumeric string in the .plist names is a unique identifier as to which specific machine will use that preference file. In practice you might need to re-do things like screen-savers and Bluetooth settings.

    There's a 90-day warranty on the repair. Use it.

    That message usually means that your phone was once connected to a different phone carrier than the one you're currently on.
    Then when you restore or updated the phone it locked back to the original phone carrier - this is caused when the phone was hacked to unlock it from the original phone carrier.
    Very rarely is the activation server unavailable.

  • Booting two Macs from one external drive: 10.8 and App Store?

    I boot two Macs from one external harddrive. Does this mean that when 10.8 is sold exclusively via the App Store and thereby linked to a unique hardware identifier, I am going to have issues with activation/authentification each time I switch machines? I have avoided the App Store since I discovered that an app I bought there, and which I really needed to open automatically on log-in, had to be manually re-activated with my Apple ID after every switch (so that I eventually deleted it and reverted to an earlier, non-App Store version).

    Welcome to the forum!
      There are a couple of "solutions" to your problem.  The easiest, and possibly the best for you (although it is a bit slower) is to copy your catalog onto the external drive as well.
    Then when you plug in the drive, you will always have your latest catalog for access.
    The other way is to keep a local copy of your catalog, and copy it onto the local drive as a way to transfer it from one computer to the other.
    This has the problem of possibly not being in sync, that is, you forgot to copy it over once and did some editing.  Then you would end up with essentually two different catalogs, instead of one in two places.
      You can copy the catalog either with your OS, or you can "export as catalog" and specify the external drive as the destination.  Then, on your other computer, "import from catalog" and only take the meta-data settings (it's on the import dialog box).
    Personally, when I'm traveling, I have my catalog on my external drive as well.  It just makes life easier, and I don't have to worry about it being out of sync, or losing it (and not the images).
    So, I would go with the first method, at least to start.  To get your catalog over there, you can either export as catalog or copy it, either one will work.
    You can find the location of your catalog file (if you don't know where it is) in the catalog settings menu prompt.  Both the location and the name will be displayed.

  • Is Verizon going to acknowlege the problems with FIOS and Windows Vista

    For months now, I have been reading the numerous problems Fios internet customers are having with Fios internet/Actiontech Router and Windows Vista and there has been no acknowledgement by Verizon of this current major issue.
    I have also experienced the exact same issue for months now since I switched to Verizon FIOS internet. Previously I had Comcast HSI using my Windows Vista laptop.  I had their service for over a year and I NEVER has a problem with the Windows Vista globe icon disappearing and loosing internet connection. The Globe always stayed on and never went away and I never lost connection when I had Comcast
    I had Verizon FIOS installed last September with my Windows Vista computer and my wireless internet connection started to drop from day 1 and it has been a daily occurrence for over 5 months now.  It has gotten so bad, I have had to hardwire my laptop to to be able to use the internet uninterrupted.
    This is what daily scenario is:
    When I turn on my laptop(with Windows Vista, I can initially get full internet access(with the globe on and it says "Local and internet). After about 10 minutes or less, the globe switches to "local only" and I can still get  internet access.  After another 5 or so minutes, a large X covers the globe and I lose internet connection entirely. The actiontech router wireless signal is no longer listed as one of the wireless networks.  The only way for me to regain internet access is either to restart my laptop or reboot the actiontech router.
    Numeorus posts here, over by DSL forums(Broadband Reports),Microsoft's website and a few othere websites detail this issue.
    I am extremely shocked and surprised that Verizon has not tried to fix this issue by working with both the makers of the Actiontech Router as well as Microsoft to find out what the problem is and how to fix it.
    I would just like to reiterate I strongly believe this is primarily a FIOS internet issue since I previously had Comcast HSI for over a year with the same Windows Vista laptop and I NEVER had that problem. Also,  I can connect to my neighbors wireless connection(she uses Comcast HSI) and when I do, the globe stay on all the time on my computer and the internet does not lose connection.
    I know that there are a couple of Verizon employees here. Please tell the higher ups who handle FIOS internet that this is a major issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
    P.S: Please don't tell me to go by my own router because then, I will have to deal with the issues of setting it up to work with Fios TV and the related VOD, widgets, remote DVR compatability issues to deal with. I don't think I can deal with the additional headaches. 

    FIOS is short for fiber optics.  fiber optics is different technology than DSL.   
    With that said, if you search the Microsoft databases for vista issues with fiber optics, (CURRENTLY THERE IS ONLY ONE PROVIDER OF FIBER TO THE HOUSE, that being Verizon, so yes you can also search Vista issues with verizon and\or fios) and you will find that Microsoft already acknowledges this issue with their software.  AND they offer you a fix.

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
    You may have a hardware problem like a dead battery.

    The WLAN is configured with WPA2 with AES and PSK, and during the troubleshooting several roamings have happened.
    Do you have any idea why they can be produced?

    You don't say which year it is, but if it's a 13" you're not having a common GPU that some 2010 and 2011 15" models are having.
    Since reinstalling the OS didn't help, I'm afraid that the only real choice you have is to take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine. It's likely a screen problem, rather than a logic board problem (although that's always a possibility).
    The testing is free as if the estimate for repair. There's really nothing else you can do yourself at this point.
