Bootcamp with XP SP2 and NTFS partitions (Paragon) – Best Setup?

Intro
Just got the new Mac Pro and I'm not sure where to place Windows for use in Bootcamp and (using the same installation) in Fusion 2. I got a smaller drive (600GB) and will get two 1TB ones soon. The first is for OSX and the other two for work files and music etc.
I want to be able to easily clone/recopy my OS X System drive independently from the data so I'd like to keep the two separate. I'll probably use the two others as RAID to mirror the content (=1TB).
Question
Should I split the first disc into two partitions and install Windows XP on that one, or should I install windows on the other (two)? I'm not sure if I'll work more in Bootcamp or more in Fusion. Some things (3DSMax) might be too slow in Fusion. Do Fusion and OS X work well on the same disc or do they hinder each other? Is there any other reason to not put OS X and the Bootcamp partition on the same hard drive?
What about the backup of the Windows Volume. Does it matter if it's on the same harddisc as the OS X Volume?
I know there is NTFS support on Mac (Paragon), to allow OS X to write on an NTFS disc, I'll get that.
I'd like to use NTFS on the Windows partition instead of FAT32, does Fusion work well with that? Could I then use part of the mirrored 1TB harddiscs in NTFS format to read and write from Windows and OS X to them?
Thanks a lot for your time. Here's the questions again:
1. Windows on the same disc as OSX? Y/N
2. Windows and/or Windows work files on OS X Raid? Y/N
3. Windows and/or Windows work files in NTFS format on Raid? Works/doesn't work

Someone else may come along with a for-sure suggestion/idea, but the first thing that comes to my mind is that you used an unsupported method for installing Windows. Boot Camp requires a Windows XP DVD with service pack 2 included, and that's not what you used.
Like I said, I can't say for sure, but that's my first guess.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Problems with Boot Camp and Drive Partition

First of all, let me preface this by saying I have in the past successfully partitioned my drive and installed Windows, but it was a while back and I can remember it was frustrating, but I don't remember the exact details. Also, I apologize for the rambling nature of this problem, but I'm trying to give as much relevant information as possible and walk through the steps I took to get where I am now.
Feel free to skip ahead to the end, the main problem seems to be I tried to create a 300 GB partition, but it didn't take or something. Now my storage is reflecting I've lost 300 GB, but it won't recognize the existence of the new partition.
Let me just walk through what I did. I deleted my previous partition because I was having some difficulties with a few programs and the partition ended up being too small and I wanted to make a bigger one anyway. I only use it for gaming and didn't care about any of the saved games so I just deleted the partition and figured I'd start over from scratch.
Before I begin, some technical details about the computer I'm working with. I don't know how much of this is necessary, but here it is:
    It's a 27-inch late 2012 iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 24GB RAM running OSX 10.9.4
The storage space is a little more difficult as that is part of the problem I'm running into, which I'll get to in a minute.
Anyway, I have a Windows 7 Professional install DVD and a burned CD called Boot Camp, which I think is the drivers from last time I installed Windows (a year and half ago?), but since I needed Superdrive for the install DVD I just used an XHD I had to put the drivers on (like I said, I don't remember how I did it last time). I go through Boot Camp and look at how much space I have and how big I want to make my partition.
Side note: Last time I made my partition, I'm fairly certain I set it to 200 GB, but the partition size actually came out to something like 112 GB or something significantly less. I didn't know what happened, but figured it would still be enough space and it had been such a hassle I didn't bother doing it again.
Supposedly I have a 1 TB HD, and I can't remember exactly what it said when I partitioned the drive this time, but it definitely said I was using less than half of my capacity and I had plenty of room, so I opted to go for a 301 GB partition (the slider wouldn't let me do exactly 300) which still left me with around 300 GB of space left over on my Mac partition I want to say. I went ahead with it and it started partitioning the drive with the blue line moving very slowly and after an hour or so it was like 80% across but no longer making progress. I looked online and people said that shouldn't happen. I cancelled the partition and the Disk Utility showed the partition, but said it was unmounted or something.
I restarted my computer thinking maybe I'd try and see what would happen if I tried to boot it up as if I had Windows installed. I also at that moment remembered that I'd had a similar problem last time because I had my XHD plugged into my USB port so I unplugged that and held down OPT. It then showed me my Mac HD drive and a CD icon that said Windows, so I clicked on that figuring maybe I could install it after all.
It led me through a Install manager and it got to the point where it asked what drive/partition do you want to install Windows in, I recognized the screen and remembered I was supposed to choose a certain one, but couldn't remember which one and none of the sizes seemed to match the storage I had allocated to the partition. One was about 200 GB and since the last time I did it my partition came out 100 GB smaller than I had set it for I thought maybe that was it.
However, it said I couldn't install on that drive for some reason (I can't remember exactly what it said). So I restarted again and figured I'd go back and see what I did wrong and start over. When I check Disk Utility it no longer sees any partition (mounted or unmounted or anything) and that the entirety of my HD is dedicated to Mac HD.
The problem is, now I'm getting weird reports about the size of my drive, the amount used, and the space available. Disk Utility tells me I have 1.12 TB capacity, 301 GB available, and 819 GB used. That doesn't even add up. Furthermore, when I click get info on Macintosh HD, it tells me I have 810 GB capacity, 364 GB available, and 446 GB used. When I click on About this Mac and go to System Report and storage I get this:
    Macintosh HD
    Available: 364 GB
    Capacity: 810 GB
    Logical Volume Group:
         Name: Macintosh HD
         Size: 1.12 TB
         Freespace: 301 GB
    Physical Volumes:
         disk0s2:
         size: 121 GB
         disk1s2:
         size: 999 GB
Now I really don't know what to make of it. That 301 GB free space makes sense as the partition I tried to create and if I add that to the 446 GB used on my Mac partition, plus the 364 GB available, that adds up to 1.12 TB (roughly, I've rounded off these numbers).
But how come Disk Utility doesn't recognize the partition then? What should I do from here?
I couldn't find anyone asking this exact type of question or running into this same problem before, so I hope I'm not asking about something that's already been answered. If that's the case, if you could direct me to where I can find the answer I'd be appreciative.
Otherwise, any help or light that can be shed would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

The problem seems to have gone away. I did click on repair disk in Disk Utility, I'm not sure if that did anything, but now when I run Boot Camp Assistant it is showing me the correct free space, so I don't know what happened. Oh well.
Still having trouble getting the **** thing to partition, but that topic is covered extensively elsewhere.

  • Can you use Apple TV 1 and Tv 2 together And what is the best setup

    Hey guys
Can you use Apple TV 1 and Tv 2 together?
And if you can what is the best setup with teh two devices above and the need to hook it to one TV.
    Thanks in advance.
    -David

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If I understand correctly you want to use both the Apple TV's with one TV.
There wouldn't be a problem with that, they will each need there own network connection and should be connected to different AV inputs on the TV so that you can switch between each Apple TV as a source with your TV remote.
If you don't have two HDMI ports on the TV, the Apple TV 1 will connect by component cables, if this isn't possible you would need to get yourself an HDMI switch.

  • Bootcamp with Snow Leopard and Windows XP

    Hello
Previously I had used Bootcamp in a 27" iMac to install Windows XP Home for the purpose of installing Empire Total War and playing it. This all went ahead smoothly with no problems. I sold the iMac a while ago, having first removed Windows and reformatted the hard drive.
I have a Mac Pro bought in 2008 (Model identifier: MacPro3,1 ; 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) which shipped with Leopard. I have just ungraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (with software update online) and partitioned the main drive with Bootcamp. I then attempted to install the same Windows XP, which all seemed to be going well (I put it on the Bootcamp partition) until it came to restart the Mac Pro after installation. This then came up as a Disc Error and I could only shut down by holding the start button in. I have now removed the Windows partition with Bootcamp Assistant.
As this all worked perfectly with the iMac, Windows XP and same OSX Snow Leopard I don't understand why it wouldn't work on the older Mac Pro. Although, having said this, the instructiond did only mention newer versions of Windows - 7 and possibly 8.
Can anyone tell me please, is there a way of making this work with WIndows XP (as it worked before with the iMac) or do I have to buy Windows 7 to make it work?
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

  • I am using bootcamp with windows 7, and always is showing me that there is no networks, it says I don't have a driver for the adapter; therefore i keep installing it, and suddendly windows 7 doesnt recognized it.

I have a Macbook Air 13" (mid 2012), recently i installed windows 7 with my original disk and code. I downloaded all the drivers via bootcamp assitant, however everytime the machine keeps disconnecting spontaneously from the internet, and keep saying that there is not driver for the adapter.
    What can i do???

I install it according boot camp instructions. My thunderbolt adapter used to work fine with windows 7, but suddenly windows 7 did not recognize the driver of the adapter, and each time i install it, happens the same.

  • Need help with export, truncate and import partitions for schema

I need to export a couple partions for our Oracle 10g Data Warehouse, truncate the partions and re-import the data using the exported file. How can I do this?
In summary here is what I need to do:
    1) Export partition P_SUB_1 of table1
    2) Export partition P_SUB2 of table2
    3) Truncate P_SUB1 partition of table1
    4) Truncate P_SUB2 partition of table2
    5) Rebuild indexes on table1 and table2
    6) Re-import data into each partition from export files.

If you have enough free space it might be easier to keep these partition in the database and do an exchange.
    That means:
    create table tmp_sub1 as select * from table1 where 1=0;
    create table tmp_sub2 as select * from table2 where 1=0;
    alter table table1 exchange partition sub1 with table tmp_sub1;
alter table table2 exchange partition sub2 with table tmp_sub2;After that your have the data of your original partitions in the tmp tables and the particular partitions in the partitioned table are empty and ready for the loading process.
If the loading process fail and you need to restore the partitions just reverse the exchange statements and you are done.

  • No sound using bootcamp with windows 10 and yosemite

    Hi,
I've just installed Windows 10 preview on my iMac Retina with Yosemite.  Everything works great but, I have no sound when using windows, I do have sound when on Yosemite.  I've looked and still haven't found a working solution, any help would be appreciated?
       Thank you. Jerry

No it's still there.  It's coming from my iMac speakers only on the windows side.  But if I play music through YouTube I hear the music through the headphone jack external speakers.  But that **** sound won't go away.  Did a repair lost all my sounds again.  Just did another repair and that sound came back.
I went into sounds and turned them off and the sound went away...I listened to every sound there before I turned it off and none of them sounded like the sound I was getting.  At least I can still hear my music through external speakers.  I'm totally confused.  Hopefully you'll have more for me?
        Thanks Jerry

  • Working with Pixel Dimensions and HDV Presets in Easy Setup

hi there, i’ve got another question...
i am still learning the in and out’s of hdv capture. I wanted to verify that the easy setup HDV 1080i plugin is what I want to use for import for my HDV footage which was shot with a Sony A1U HDV camera. I believe it was recorded at 1920x1080 and the imported quicktime file says it is imported at 1440 x1080(and in parentheses it says 1888x1062)..why does the HDV 1080i FCP preset not import at the same frame rate as it was recorded at….?
also does a Sony FX1 use the same HDV preset at the A1U?
    many thanks
    adam

    Tom,
    You’re right, …again!
Up till now, I really thought that I had true HD coming out of this camera; shame on me! It really does look good.
I’ve browsed the specs of my Canon HV30 User’s manual, and no where does video say 1920x1080; only 1080i ! That’s why when I ingest and capture using ProRes 422HQ, I only see the 1440x1080 Browser frame size.
(Still images from this camera do produce a 1920x1080 and 2048x1536 sizes)
Let me ask your opinion and that of anyone else out there.
If I were to use video from this camera, and move up to an external BluRay burner and player, ……would I achieve better looking DVD video quality than what I’m currently seeing when burning DVD’s using iDVD-Best Performance and playing back on a standard def (upscaling) DVD player ?
And if not, which consumer camcorder would you recommend that DOES provide true 1920x1080 for capturing into FCP, and costs under $1000 !
    Thanks
    BoBo

  • Persistent problems with updating, uninstalling and the functioning of the setup discs.

I am having problems with the Reader (9) and Acrobat Pro 9 aspects of my registered copy of CS4 Design Premium. When acting on the prompts from the updater, neither of these products will update, giving me a 1301? error (essentially telling me that i have modified the content of the folders?????) This is rubbish. I then decided to uninstall Acrobat 9 Pro and reinstall from the startup disc, well I was wrong, That refuses to work either, 1) The Acrobat uninstaller is stating that Acrobat is not the correct program for this uninstaller to uninstall, ??????? So I just deleted it and went to the startup disc. It gets to the 'preparing to install' stage and that is all, (waited for 3 hours for something to happen, I think that is quite enough).
Please explain to me what is going on and more importantly get me my Acrobat Pro back so I can update it. NOT HAPPY.
I have successfully downloaded and installed Reader X from the site, so we will see if that behaves itself when updating.

Uninstall everything Adobe (yes, including CS4), run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, then reinstal lfrom scratch. Only run upates after both CS4 and Acrobat have been successfully reinstalled, then carefulyl re-apply all patches/ updates based on priority. Something busted/ locked your installer database which could include an update gone wrong. Can happen again, but updating from a fresh install is usualyl less prone to such issues and it might actualyl go through....

  • Bootcamp setup with Mac OS and WinXP; now what to use Ghost to image

We have successfully taken a Mac and setup bootcamp with Mac OS and Windows XP; however, we have another 50 Mac's to deploy. It was our thought we could use Ghost to image the initial system and deploy to all others. However, in our attempts Ghost is only seeing the Mac side.
Has anyone does this? Is there a way to get it to pick it all up? or do we have to manually install all 50 Mac's?

If you use SuperDuper and your target drive is larger than your HD, you can use a block clone which will include everything on your internal drive including XP.

  • Secure Search Lotus Notes and NTFS?

How can I do secure search with Lotus Notes and NTFS sources? When configuring Identity Management, I have to choose between Lotus and MSAD. And user names are different between both directories. Any chance to secure both sources with one query?

If user names are different on the two systems, you can't combine them in a single SES instance. You only log on once to SES, so the system wouldn't be able to tell which username to use for each system.
However, this can be done via the federation architecture. You need two SES instances, one connected to AD and one connected to the Lotus Notes native identity plugin.
You will then need to have an attribute in your AD which contains the Notes username. Let's call it LNNAME.
You would then create a federated source on the instance connected to AD, which collects results from the instance connected to the Notes plugin.
When you define your federated source, there is a field called "Search User Attribute". This is the name of the AD attribute which contains the Notes username - LNNAME in our example.
SES then authenticates the user against AD. It then runs federated queries against the Notes system, asserting that the logged in user is a valid Notes user with a certain username, which it gets from the LNNAME attribute.
Naturally this requires trust between the systems. The Notes system has to trust the AD to correctly authenticate and identify the user - even though the Notes password will never be given.

  • How to export animated gif with transparent background and glow effect?

I've been having issues lately with creating animated gifs in flash. I finally figured out a way to export a gif with a transparent background but I'm now having an issue with it again because I'm using a glow effect. When the gif is exported the glow effect changes into a very poor quality and becomes less of a glow and more like a solid color. I've even exported a png sequence from flash and put it into photoshop then created a gif from there but I'm still having the same issue. Is there anyway I can properly export this in gif form so the quality is the same as when I test it in flash?
I've provided an image of what my issue looks like and the settings (I've messed around with the settings and this is the best I can come up with) . This is in photoshop but the result is similar in flash. The left one is what it originally looks like and the right is what it will look like after exporting. As you can see as I said before the glow changes into more of a solid color kind of like a border. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

A GIF is limited to 256 colors while a glow effect likely wants to tie up thousands (let's just say 'lots') of variations of tone.
