Booting hangs at loading vmlinuz-arch.efi (UEFI boot)

Hello,
I have just installed Arch Linux on my desktop machine (UEFI motherboard) which contains drives & partitions as follows:
1. /dev/sda (~ 250 GB) with
1: Win 7 64 bit
2: ntfs partition for data
3: ntfs partition for programs
2. /dev/sdb (1 TB) with
1: ntfs
2: fat32 / vfat as the uefi partition thingy
3: linux fs with swap, root and home
I have followed the Beginners' Guide dow nto the letter.
So I used rEFInd to set up the UEFI boot manager. However, it hangs at using the vmlinuz-arch.efi file/partition (?) on boot.
I have tried booting with a new efibootmgr entry as well, but it still hangs.
At this point, I'd like to know:
How can I get rid of all the rEFInd boot manager entries?
What precisely do I have to do to get it working? I could, of course, read around on here all day, but I somehow won't really learn anything as I can't deduct the right path of action for myself. If the machine weren't my productive system I'd definitely "play" around a lot more, that's for sure.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

OK, i will post, maybe it can help you!
First you need to boot from the arch installation media in UEFI mode. Mount your system partitions and chroot into it.
If you only have refind and kernel files under /boot/efi/ you can delete all files (clearing the EFI partition). Then run
modprobe efivars
. If you want to remove any efi entry, you can do it with
efibootmgr -b <entry_number> -B
Ok I did that.
sed -i "s/root=PARTUUID=XXXXXXXX rootfstype=XXXX ro/root=UUID=$(blkid -s UUID -o value $(df -k /)) rootfstype=$(blkid -s TYPE -o value $(df -k /)) ro/" "/boot/refind_linux.conf"
You meant here for me as wlel to exchange the X's wit hthe corresponding keys, right? I mean I did it. Would not make sense to me to call the comman with lots of Xs.
The rest was quite easy, I paid a lot of attention and made sure  I typed in everthing correctly.
I am now at a blank black screen and there is a white underscore flashing in the upper left corner.
edit Can't boot into Windows anymore. Can't repair the MBR / UEFI boot with the Windows 7 DVD either...
edit2 Did lots of googling and at least Win 7 works fine again.
No. All the code is for you to type exactly as it is. The only statements you need to replace are <drive_with_efi_partition> and <efi_partition_number> with your current setup. What the line you questioned does is to replace the lines with "root=PARTUUID=XXXXXXXX rootfstype=XXXX ro" using the linux "sed" command, in refind_linux.conf with "root=UUID=<autodetected_uuid_of_your_root_partiton> rootfstype=ext4 ro". That will only work with the original refind_linux.conf, so if you edited it, you need to rerun
cp -r /usr/lib/refind/config/refind_linux.conf /boot/
There are 3 main reasons that may caused you to boot into a black screen with nothing written on it.
1. By not writing the code as it is, and editing files by hand instead, you may have done something wrong;
2. Your computer is booting from the wrong uefi entry, intead of the one created earlier;
3. You need to have "nomodeset" in your kernel boot line.
When does the black screen apears? After selecting a refind entry from refind's menu? Right after the pc boots (refind menu does not appear)
Another thing. In order for you to have access to windows, you need to edit refind.conf windows corresponding entry and remove the disabled statement or it wont appear on refind menu

A couple of things that are important:
refind_linux.conf should be in the same directory as vmlinuz-linux and the initrd so it should be in /boot/ since that is where your kernel is.
In your refind.conf stanza you have the line volume "EFI system partition" which tells rEFInd that the loader is in that partition whereas the kernel and initrd files seem to be in /boot/ which is not the EFI System Partition. Hence the volume line needs to specify the filesystem where /boot is which in your case appears to be /dev/sdb5 so the volume line in that case should be volume "root" since root is the filesystem label for sdb5? Note that if you update to rEFInd version 0.8.0 or later then you can use the partuuid value to specify the volume but in the version you are using that token for the volume was not yet implemented.
In the stanza you quoted there was no terminating } but maybe you just didn't copy it to your post.
Making these changes may let the system boot to the arch kernel.

  • Impossible to install arch in UEFI mode on my Acer Aspire S3-391

    Hi there,
I am trying to install arch-linux on my Acer Aspire S3-391, which came with a pre-shipped Windows 8. I am trying to make a dual boot, so I would like to keep the UEFI mode at startup. However, my computer won't boot on the Arch Linux USB Flash drive when in UEFI mode : when plugged in, the key prevents the computer from loading anything. The "Acer" page keeps on reloading itself, without even letting me access the BIOS menu (In other words, the computer is blocked at "POST" phase when the installation media of arch is plugged in).
Here's what I did to try and solve the problem  :
    1) of course, I disabled Secure Boot and hibernation in Windows 8.
    2) tried to boot in legacy bios. It works, and i could install arch this way : but as told before, i would like to install it in UEFI mode.
    3) Checked, re-checked and re-rechecked the installation media.
    4) tried to install Ubuntu in UEFI mode. It worked : the bootable key of Ubuntu was loaded, when the bootable key of arch is blocked. Why ? No idea...
    5) Installed Ubuntu, and tried to install Arch in UEFI mode from Ubuntu, following the tutorial "Install_from_Existing_Linux". No luck here : i was blocked at step "Testing if you are booted into UEFI mode" on the beginner's guide : I was not, and I couldn't find any solution in the tutorial.
Any suggestions on what I should try next ?

If you've already installed in BIOS/CSM/legacy mode, my recommendation is to install your EFI-mode boot loader and try it out. You'll need to use something else that does boot (such as Ubuntu), install the boot loader using the Windows bcdedit command (assuming you're dual-booting), or install the boot loader as EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi (if you're setting up for Linux alone) to get it to work, though.

  • Windows 7 install hangs while loading

Been trying to install Windows 7 64 to my MBP through Boot Camp, but it hangs when loading files from the DVD. It'll get through the progress bar saying "Windows is loading files..." but then stops after that.
Any ideas on what to do?

One of the reasons Windows 7 might have trouble, is where you are forced to delete and create NTFS out of the FAT/MSDOS partition that BCA creates.
Second, Windows 7 may assume that one of the 128MB or 200MB partitions on there (EFI at the end of each HFS volume and GPT head) look like FAT; Windows 7 creates a 100MB System Recovery partition. It may try to use those instead of taking it from the BOOTCAMP partition.
XP discs could vary and some versions would wipe out Mac OS, not even ask for where to put Windows, for no rhyme or reason, even XP SP3. Of course that means having a backup is doubly important.
Windows 7 64-bit is only "officially" support on some Macs, which doesn't mean it can't or won't, only that may have extra steps, may get an extra "Select 1 or 2" option due to its own EFI menu on Windows DVD.

  • [SOLVED]How exactly do you install Arch using UEFI?

I want to switch my laptop to UEFI. I have a few questions I'd like to ask.
    * Does UEFI require a bios boot partition?
    * If not but I add a bios boot partition and efi partition is it true I can boot into my system both with UEFI enabled and not enabled?
Will the following set my laptop to use UEFI?
    Create a partition scheme as follows;
    1. bios boot -- about 2mb -- ef02
    2. efi boot partition -- about 200mb (is this size about right?) -- fat32
    3. root -- 8300
    4. swap
    5. home -- 8300
Then when I mount everything I make sure to mount the efi partition like
        mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/boot/efi
    It goes to /boot/efi right?
    Then when installing GRUB, I install it like;
        grub-install --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub_uefi --recheck
    And finally I'd run the
        grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Is that the gist for the most part?
Last edited by stevenmw (2014-12-18 17:51:37)

    Here is what I did,
I booted Arch install media (not from UEFI).
I made my partition scheme is gdisk:
      1. 2M -- ef02 -- BIOS boot
      2. 500M -- ef00  -- efi
      3. 30G -- 8300 -- root
      4. 12G -- 8200 -- swap
      5. 195G -- 8300 -- home
    I then did my mkfs:
      mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda2
      mkfs.fat -s2 -F32 /dev/sda2
      mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda3
      mkswap /dev/sda4
      mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda5
When I first made my file extensions I made the mistake of not making the efi partition fat32. I knew it had to be fat32 and I wasn't sure if just making it ef00 was enough. So I searched Google. I didn't find much so I pushed forward.
I eventually got an error when trying to do grub-install, it said /dev/sda2 does not look like and efi partition.
So I thought about it, was it the size I chose, was it that I was just putting it in /boot, was it not fat32? I immediately decided it must not be fat32. And I was right. After a search I discovered I needed to do mkfs.fat. So I did this and success! Grub installed everything where it needed to be. (So it is true when they say Arch doesn't care if you have /boot/efi or /boot/EFI. Just using /boot is enough. That is fact.)
But now I had another error. I forgot to install efibootmgr package... By this time I thought I had it so I started all over. This was actually my laptop so I wasn't going to give it more than two tries. So I started from scratch. A second and final try...
I set up my partition scheme, did my mk stuff, and mounted all of my filesystems. Then Installed the base and base-devel packages. I went into arch-chroot on /mnt and then into a bash..
I went through a couple of basic setup things and then I installed grub and efibootmgr. I then ran
        grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=grub_uefi --recheck
Hooray! No errors reported! I checked /boot and everything was there and laid out perfectly!
So I did the grub-mkconfig..... And rebooted.
    But it wouldn't boot!
I started to dig around the Arch wiki and read it is a good idea to start out in UEFI mode and go into the  install media and proceed. So I tried this in a VM. The Arch install media would not start in UEFI mode. So I just came to the conclusion that there is something I am missing. Either in GRUB or something I don't understand about my laptop.
I installed Fedora 21 in a VM out of UEFI mode and then again where I started out in UEFI mode. Starting out in UEFI mode did seem to make a difference. I just gave up on my laptop and installed it back with bios and no UEFI. I'm going to dig around and see if I can find what I'm doing wrong.
Could it boil down to not being able to start out in UEFI mode and then switch back into UEFI mode after install? I highly doubt it. There is just something I'm missing..
Marking this as solved. Thanks everyone.
    Edit:
Starting out in UEFI mode made the difference! I just wasn't being patient with my VM. Starting out in UEFI mode and then performing the install makes the difference! After following that process I can boot into Arch using UEFI!
Also, I mentioned I couldn't get Arch install media to start in UEFI. That was my fault. When i created my usb i didn't make it a UEFI bootable device! So I would go into my boot options and I would see UEFI but my usb only showed in the legacy list.

  • Outlook 2010 Hangs at Loading Profile

We just updated our network with all Server 2008 R2 servers, Exchange 2010, and Office 2010 Pro. We have isntalled Office 2010 on all machines and all has been working fine for the last 2 weeks. Over the last 3 days, we now are having some problems with
when Outlook is launched, it hangs on "Loading Profile" and does not go any further. I have tried killing the "Agent" process that this creates as suggested in other forums. I have run repairs, and un-install/re-installs which seems to temporaily fix the problem.
Most the clients are up-to-date with the Office updates. I have also un-installed SP1 on a couple machines which again works for a bit then the next time the user restarts the computer Outlook hangs again.
This is getting extremely frustrating as I have another thread with some other Office problems. Thanks for the help in advance.

I had the same problem.  I tried all the posted solutions without success...new profile, reinstall, reset nav pane, safe mode, killing processes, stopping add-ons, etc.  I found the same solutions repeated ad nauseum on website after website.
Finally after much experimentation I found this solution.
    1.  Export the registry key containing your profiles at HKCU>Software>Microsoft>WindowsNT>CurrentVersion>Windows Messaging Subsystem>Profiles.  This is just a precautionary measure.
    2.  Stop all optional start-up programs from running on boot.
    3.  Kill and uninstall all search programs, such as Google desktop and Copernic.
    4.  Delete the registry key above.
    5.  Create a new profile using the Control Panel>Mail tool.  Include an email address.  I had to do this twice before it would save the new profile...it only works if there are no profiles in the registry.
    6.  Start Outlook in safe mode.
    7.  Manually move your old messages from the old pst file(s) to the new one.  I had 1.5 gigs of mail to move, so it took a while.
    8.  With your messages backed up, delete the old pst file(s).  Move any other old pst files out of the Outlook files folder.  Don't ask me why this worked, but it made the difference.
    9.  Start Outlook with the new profile.  At this point, Outlook started very quickly and without problems.  I hope it works for you.
    10.  Update the programs with the relevant add-ons.  iTunes, McAfee, Sugar Sync, etc. all had add-ons in the Outlook start-up list.  My Sugar Sync add-on was causing problems.
    11.  With Outlook running, reinstall your search program if you had one, using the latest update.  For me it was Copernic that was the problem.  It was set to index Outlook messages, but it was corrupted and had to be reinstalled.
    11.  Use msconfig to selectively reboot.  I did this several times to make sure that no other programs were conflicting with Outlook.  It took forever, and the results were negative, but it seems prudent.
This solution took me many boring and frustrating hours to work out.  In the end, it was an outside program that was the problem.  I hope this helps you.

  • Multiple GPUs cause machine to hang at "Loading extension GLX"

I installed arch just fine with 1 video card with the catalyst drivers from Vi0L0's repo.  I then move the machine and attach a few more GPUs to it.
Now when I use 'startx' the machine hangs at "Loading extension GLX".  I checked the Xorg log files which are all empty. I tried 'startx -- -extension GLX' which just brings a black screen.
Every reboot when I startx I will get the error that no adapters are found, so I will 'aticonfig --initial --adapter=all' but then it again hangs at GLX yet again.  I have tried rebuilding the catalyst modules and using an older Catalyst driver...I am out of ideas...hoping someone here has some. Thanks.

That's one thing I also tried. x starts just fine with 1 GPU but when even 1 more is added, it hangs.

  • X2100 M2 hangs on loading /sbin/loader during RHEL 4 ES Update 4 install

I have this new X2100 M2. I have a RAID 1 setup with two disks. When I boot from the RHEL 4 ES Update 4 (32 bit) install CD, it hangs when loading /sbin/loader.
If I specify "linux noapic" it does the same thing. If I specify "linux noprobe" it goes into the install menu but the keyboard doesn't work.
I am running Firmware: BIOS - 3A12 and SP - 2.70. There are newer version out, but when I tried to installed those all the USB ports stopped working and I had to downgrade to the above versions via iLOM.
This is obviously a hardware issues with RHEL ES 4, but I don't know what hardware. I had this same problem installing VMWare ESX 3.0.1 on an X4600, but after upgrading to the latest BIOS (which said fixed fixed the /sbin/loader) issue everything worked.
There doesn't seem to be a fix yet for this on the X2100 M2 BIOS though.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    MK

    Matt,
We had a problem like this with our x2100M2's. These systems come with 250GB SATA drives and the redhat distro doesn't load the correct modules to contact the drive. We had to load the following modules:

Sometimes, it is best with a new system to boot the redhat distro in single user mode, then see what devices show up and what modules are loaded.
I realize this is a bit sketchy, but we boot via a network boot with an NFS mounted root, so there is no OS resident on the compute nodes.

  • About T400s' EFI/UEFI rom

I'm an software engineer and fond of Thinkpad. I'm using over 10 thinkpad laptops/keyboards/etc. currently. None can be better than Thinkpad in laptop.
I'm using T400s for over 2 years and it's great. I'm using an Ubuntu Natty now and It can boot from GRUB to Desktop in about 6.3 seconds. But the BIOS is too slow!
I saw a famous video from Phoenix, they used a magical version of BIOS(EFI/UEFI?) to boot to the Bootmgr in 1~2 seconds. And I tried really hard (searched and read over 100 threads/blog posts/sth.else) to find something released or even something about it, but I failed.
I really really wan't to try that fabulous thing, even unstable, even buggy, even ... So can the stuff of Lenovo to help me to do this? I wan't be a volunteer for testing and I won't leak it to public(I can sign Confidentiality agreement with Lenovo if needed).
    Thanks,

Lenovo won't release such update for the T400s, if you need UEFI you would have to get the T420s.

  • Extension Manager CS6 hangs on "Loading Extensions" and I cannot uninstall it.

    Hello,
I've been having trouble with extension manager cs6 for about two days now, trying to apply patches to it to make it run more smoothly and stop hanging on "Loading Extensions". I have looked through these forums and they suggested that I remove all mxi files from a subfolder called "EM Store", but I cannot find a EM store under the proper location. I also cannot uninstall extension manager from my control panel, as it does not show up. I am just trying to get keyframe caddy for Adobe Flash, but I cannot get it without extension manager which is a giant pain. I've seen other people post both of their log files, but I think that just makes these forums impossible to find any real answers, as the majority of it is the log file. Please help asap, as I need this project that I am doing to be done fairly quickly.
    Short story:
    1. Manager hangs at "Loading Extensions"
    2. Tried patching with updates, did not work
    3. Tried finding the two subfolders, cannot find them at all in proper location
    4. Cannot uninstall it from control panel
    5. Need Help asap

You should delete EM Store and Database, then try again, you can find these folders under following path:
Current Machine's Extension Manager CS6 folder: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6, under this path you should remove "EM Store", "Mxi Flag" and "Configuration" folder.
Current user's Extension Manager CS6 folder:  C:\Users\<your_user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6, under this path you should remove "EM Store", "Mxi Flag" and "Configuration" folder.
For the 'AppData' is a hidden folder, you could follow this guider (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/) to unhidden it

  • FCPX 10.0.7 hangs when loading multiple projects - a non-destructive work around

FCPX 10.0.7 hangs when loading multiple projects - a non-destructive work around....
Hi Guys, I upgraded from FCPX 10.0.6 to 10.0.78 and discovered to my immense frustration that many of my 100+ FCPX projects would not load.
    Symptom:
FCPX 10.0.7 appears to hang ("spinning beachball") with either high CPU% on a single core or  with 1-2% CPU busy (activity monitor.app) when a FINAL CUT PROJECT is selected. No logs error information in /var/logs ..hmm
notices that the "status circle" spins around endlessly.
Actvity Monitor.app shows "Final Cut Pro (Not Responding)
and also I notice in some cases that an OEM filter ("NEAT VIDEO NOISE REDUCTION") is in progress to be loaded. FCPX V10.0.7 must be FORCED QUITtted to remove it from system.
History: Upgraded FCPX from V10.0.6 to V10.0.07.
"FINAL CUT EVENTS" and "FINAL CUT PROJECTS" on a single file system on SAS 16TB disk array (768MB/sec read via AJA system test) and 60% utilised capacity… FCP EVENTS has 400 events in it .. some 5.2TB of Prores essence etc .. all works fine! (i.e. the storage system is first class and is NOT the issue)
32GB of RAM on MAC PRO 2009 Nehalem 16 x Vcore with ATI 5780 card and ATTO HBA's (i.e. plenty of resources!)
As usual with any "upgrade" to FCPX 10.0.? all the EVENT objects need to be upgraded. In my case this takes an hour or two.. so I do that when asleep.
After experiencing above, I restored the FCPX EVENTS LIbrary of that file system from LTO4 tape archive (BRU-PE ) and still had the same issues as above.
    WORKAROUND:
    FORCEd QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
RENAMEd "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original"
created (make) a new "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" (use finder)
For each project !!! in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original", (do one project at a time!!!)
MOVE "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original/one_fcpx_projext_nnnn_folder" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
Make sure you move ONLY one project at a time. If you have a subfolder of projects, please do each project one at a time (serially!)
Launch FCPX V10.0.7 and BE PATIENT!!! .. DONT click or fiddle with the UI.. it seems when you intervene it locks up as well…
    Let FCPX V10.0.7 settle….
select the project you just added above  and RELINK any objects it needs. Thumbnails and proxies will be rendered again.. just be patient
wait until ALL the rendering as stopped.
    QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
(now if FCPX locks up, just force it out and start again as above).
repeat for all projects in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" (go to step 4 ad do until all projects moved)
When all is COMPLETED MAKE SURE YOU ARCHIVE an instance (or make a backup ) of "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
If this procedure has worked the folder "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" will have zero (nill, none) projects in it.
I have managed to restore ALL my  "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" this xmas between drinking etc. I'm satisfied that its all ok.
    Other issues:
use DISK WARRIOR or TT PRO 6 to make sure that the file system volume where your  "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" are is physically ok. I noticed some entries in file system's  volume table that represented objects in  "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" were at fault when I used these utilities… FWIW.
SUMMARY: yes this took ages to d, however luckily I had everything in at least 3 instances in an archive which has saved me many time in the old FCP& and prior days… it was just a matter of time to put it back together.
I put this outage down to may be my own impatience when I first fired up FCPX 10.0.7 after the upgrade.
I'm interested if this workaround is helpful to others and in addtiion if others have a more satisfactory remedy.

Hi Eb, yeah I could not see any "memory leak" or unusual consumption of REAL memory whose less availability would cause excessive PAGEing and SWAPping as seen in the Activty Monitor.app
I watch this carefully especially the use of REAL MEMORY by 3rd Paryy apps. BTW there are a few that cause ALLOCATED but NOT USED memory (blue in the A.M.app UI). Simply a unix PURGE command can release that memory and help clean up the PAGE and VM swap files (its alleged!).
Yes, you may be might with the element of "Luck" involved. I would add though, that having MULTIPLE project displaying in the STORYLINE window and loading always caused my FCP 10.0.7 jam up at startup with h symtoms and observations I described.
TIP: I might also add that for a super speedy launch of FCPX one may also emply setting each PROJECT's UI to show only AUDIO thus negating the need to contstruct or reneder out a PREVIEW ui in each clip in the storyline.
Your/Apples  suggestion of the movememt (rename) of "Final Cut Pro Projects" to "Final Cut Pro Projects Hidden" is similar to what I proposed above to stop FCPX 10.0.7 accessing and building it up at startup. This workaround has been useful inthe past as well.
ALso one might also get the stick out and remove (delete/rm) the ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState in one's home ~/Library so that FCPX wont do such a neat job reinstating FCPX last time you crashed it... This has been helpful also in diagnosing my issues.
    Lastly I have noticed that:
impatience clicking on the FCPX UI when in the unstable state causes it to lock up with NO visible CPU% busy.... as if its waiting on something which is usually me MEMTERMing it via FORCE QUIT and
the projects where I have employed the NEAT VIDEO Noise Reduction OEM filter for FCPX seem to exasserbate the PROJECT loading issues when several PROJECTS are available at FCPX startup time.
As of yesterday I have some 400+ EVENTS Final Cut Pro Events and 130+ projects of varying compexites in a single file system on Final Cut Pro Projects all working fine and as good as gold again!
Oh and one more thing, I had to RE-RENDER many projects of them again... strange as the FCP PROJECT library was renstated from a recent LTO archive as of V10.0.6 FCPX.. strange that...I would have expected if the projects and events were 10.0.6/7 compatable as proposed by Tom, that this would not be necessary... hmm straneg that
    I'll monitor this thread.
    Thanks for your comments lads!
