Booting to Darwin....PLEASE HELP!!!
My computer goes to black screen with white lettering. I have followed some instructions I found in an older post....
If you are unable to login, start in Single User mode by holding down the Command (Apple) key and the 'S' key as you reboot (see Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode).
You will get a lot of white text on a black screen, which will end in a prompt like "root#". Then type:
/sbin fsck -fy
and repeat this command until it says your disk "appears to be OK". Then type this command followed by a return:
tail -20 /var/log/system.lo
Now I am getting:
hfs: WARNING - blocks on volume not allocated!
With the ALL CAPS and exclamation point, I am sure this can not be good.
Can anyone HELP??
No responses posted. Went to CompUSA and spent as bundle.

my iphone 4 i bought was jailbroken to ios 6.0.1 redsn0w but i tried to restore the iphone and now it keeps saying connect to itunes but when i connect and try to restore an "unknown error" occurs and it will not boot up whatsoever. please help!
If you want to solve your problems, unjailbreak. And don't do it again, because jailbreaking causes problems as you read about in that article. You can try Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

Can vmware run on Boot Camp? Please Help as soon as possible
I recently installed vista ultimate through vmware, but is it possible in any way to boot this vista OS I installed through vmware fusion through boot camp?
Please help as soon as someone finds a certain answer.
ThanksRunning Windows (Vista or XP) is somewhat slower in virtualization than in BootCamp. If this is an important issue for you - and particularly if you are going to be running programs that benefit from fast screen updates - then you want BootCamp. If you need BootCamp then install it and afterwards install VMWare Fusion and use the BootCamp installation rather than a virtualized disk.
If you are satisfied with the performance of virtualization there is no benefit from having BootCamp installed in terms of running VMWare. This is a disadvantage though - you have to shut down, you cannot save an instance, at least with version 1. I haven't downloaded version 2 to see if this has changed. It is much faster to resume an instance than to restart Windows and then your applications. -
Computer won't boot up! Please help.
How's it going guys, I have a powerbook G4 that I have owned for a few years now. I woke up this morning to my computer making a weird processor noise, it was a repetitive noise, and my screen was frozen. I thought my computer had frozen or something. I did a hard shut down on my laptop and my computer will not boot up mac osx. It stays Stuck on the Apple page. I've tried taking the battery out, i've tried new ram, and i've tried restarting it several times, and to no avail has my computer booted back up. I have the mac osx disc and that won't even load up. Can anyone please help me out. I'm in dying need of my laptop! Thanks! - Brian
When I try and repair the disk it reads the 74.5 GB TOSHIBA MK8025GAS Harddrive but It doesn't read the HD drive right under it. I click on the toshiba disk and i tried repairing it and it gave me an error message. The message reads : "First Aid Failed. Disk utility stopped repairing HD because the following error was encountered. The underlying task reported failure exit."
The actual disk utility window reads "Invalid node structure" in red letters. "The volume HD could not be repaired : Error : The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked : 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. Repair attempted on volume 1, 1 volume could not be repaired.
Any suggestions? And how do i go about doing an archive install? And how do i go about using diskwarrior? Thanks guys. I really appreciate this. I need this computer up and running for school. I'm actually at my college library typing this out. - Brian -
Linux: problem booting mac os. please help me
hi all,
i've a macbook pro 17''
i had to try a linux program for pano in 3d. i decided to try the live cd of ubuntu.
the live cd seems not functioning (no matter) but now i cant restart my macbook?
the only operatione i made before testinf the live cd was to change the boot from hard disk to the cd?
what can i do? i cant start my mac os x...
please help!!!!Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select your OS X volume and click on the down arrow button that appears. The computer should start up in OS X. Eject the CD from the optical drive. Open Startup Disk preference and select the OS X volume for the startup, then click on the Restart button. This should return your system to OS X startup.
In the future you do not need to change the startup volume using Startup Disk in order to boot from a CD or DVD. Simply insert the disc in the optical drive then restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the gray startup screen appears. Release the key when the spinning gear appears.

Boot Up Issues PLEASE HELP!!!
My brother recently gave his old Power Mac G5 Quad-Core tower, it hadn't been used for a long time ( at least 5 years). I know it doesn't have a operating system on it right now. This morning I opened it up and cleaned it (5 years worth of dust). When I went to boot it up for the first time, it sounded ok for the first 3 sec. then I heard 2 consecutive beeps and the ALL THE FANS in the tower turned on and spun to they're full capacity (im sure) haha. Anybody know what happened? Hardware failure indicator? Please Help! don't want to recycle this beautiful machine
Hi Armando, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Besides the good advice so far...
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
If you're sure the RAM is good, try the Hair Dryer trick...

I can only access the command line through the single mode.
If I won't get any help I will be forced to wipe everything out and do a fresh install. Please help.
I can provide you with other log files - just give me their exact localisation.
PS. I don't have access to the internet after I log in through the single mode. Lots of errors...eh.

Well I'm not sure how exactly I managed to fix it, but I'll write it down for the people that may experience similar problems in the future.
I logged into my Linux using the 'single user mode' - by adding the 'single' word at the end of the kernel line in GRUB.
I gave myself write permissions by issuing the command 'mount -no remount, rw /'.
I removed the gensplash-initscripts, then installed normal initscripts, then installed gensplash-initscripts again and modified the rc.conf file.
Rebooted, fixed my network by modifying rc.conf file again.
I have to fix the local area settings like time, zone etc. and something is wrong with the xserver (the fonts are too big) but generally - it WORKS
Thanks for your help attempts
Cheers. Staying with Arch -

Hi,
Thanks for reading my call for advise...
My system ran fine for about 10 months now. Since 1 week in 3D games I experienced some artifacts. A few days later artifacts appeared while playing movies in more than 100% of their original size. I did a winxp system restore... This seemed to be helpful for about two days.
Yesterday I booted my system....
Immediately my screen fills with strange blinking characters and lots of color. It looks like a &$%$^ fractal when my systems stops responding.
Only the top right corner is still readable. It shows the bios logo. There's nothing I can do. I can't go in the Bios-menu. My JLed shows it's busy with ...Boot Attempt - This will set low stack and boot via INT 19h.
Anyone seen this before? Please help me out.
Thanx!
Regards, Mark

- MSI NX6600-GT
- MAXTOR 160 GB (Sata)
- SHARKOON SILENTSTORM (370W)I will search on int 19h....thanks.
My problem started before the bios-screen.
This is what I tried this evening:
- Disconnected all non-essential devices...no effect.
- Cleared the CMOS...system booted to OS! Screens still garbled!
- Put in an older graphics-card...No artifacts!
- Put my MSI NX6600GT (AGP) back in...screen grabled while booting. Once in OS everything
looks fine at first. Later I noticed some odd random pixels. Playing movies is working fine.
Playing 3D games results in all kinds of strange looking artifacts.
- Installed the latest NVidia- drivers...no effect.
Is my problem still MOBO related or Graphics Adapter?
Any further advice?
Thanks! -
Start up script fails; Unable to boot...Please, Help.
This is my first major problem that I have had with this computer. It has been running fine until this past Sunday night. I was running AOL, Firefox & iTunes. The computer was running slow and iTunes was skipping frequently. I rebooted and resumed my activities only to have the same problems and the computer booted slower than usual. I closed all my applications and rebooted once again. Then, I ran Disk Utility had used Verify Disk. It found an error on my system volume stating an incorrect block count in one sector and referenced a file cache_003, all other volumes passed. Disk Utility was unable to repair the volume. Repair Disk ran slow. I did a search for the file cache_003 and discovered that it was part of a Netscape profile back up on a different partition. I deleted the profile and used Disk Utility again. This time, the system volume passed and a different volume failed due to incorrect block size, Repair Disk failed. The next time I tried to boot the computer the gray screen with apple and loading indicator came up and stayed for several minutes followed by a blue screen with loading indicator for several minutes and stayed blue for nearly 40 minutes. Eventually, the screen went black and displayed that the start up script failed. Here is some of what was displayed.
Darwin/BSD(Computer Name-Computer.local)(console)
System Starter[35]
login date&time Internet Sharing[96]:Libinfo[Socket_open():2318]connect():2318]connect:()connection refused (This line repeated continuously)
I am able to input commands at this stage but I am not knowledgeable enough to know what to do.
When I push the power button to turn it off the computer beeps once and the led light flashes three times and turns off.
Each time when I attempt to boot either into Safe Mode or from the Software Install DVD I encounter the same problem.
Now, Monday night by chance on another boot attempt the computer started up although it took about 20-30 minutes. It was missing one volume which showed up in Disk Utility under a different name. While I had the computer up I backed up what I could on the volumes that mounted. One file I was unable to burn using Toast 9 due to a data fork error. The computer eventually froze during my activities and since I have had no luck at my start up attempts and have had the same problem. Luckily, I was able to back up everything I needed with the exception of what was on the AWOL volume.
The last thing I had installed recently was the latest Security Update which went fine and was two days before the trouble started.
I am at a loss for what to do next. I would like to retrieve the files on that one volume but at this point if I can start up I would just like to reformat and install the OS.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. Thank you.Well, originally when I ran Disk Utility, although it performed slower than usaual it found the error as previously mentioned and was unable to Repair Volume. As to using the Hardware Disc & Install Discs(original & Tiger) the computer failed to boot although you could hear the disc spinnning for awhile. In both and every instance regardless of any or no disc, the computer starts the boot process and you see the gray screen with white apple and loading indicator for about 3 minutes then it switches to the blue screen with loading indicator. After quite some time the loading indicator goes away and it's just a blue screen for nearly a half-hour followed by a black screen which starts the above prompt. I can post all of what that said later as I have written all of it down at home, a portion of it is in my original post. The start up chime doesn't sound at all. I do get a tone and flashing LED lights when I hold the power button down to turn it off after the above described boot process. There is not much I can do except try and try again. I may need to get a new hard drive but I would like to resolve it without doing so if possible. When trying to boot from both discs I was holding down the C key as directed and I have tried just letting the computer boot with disc in drive without any key interaction.

Very strange boot/device behaviour- please help!
hello!
i was quite happy with my macbook pro, when it one day did not boot anymore. i just saw the black screen and no startup sound was heard. i tried several times to restart, but no result. i gave up for some hours and when i came back it worked again.
i thought it might have been the humidity as sunnier days came their way and my macbook worked without any problem.
however, one month later i´m confronted again with this boot issue. so after the mbp has been turned off, i have to wait 30 minutes in order to be able to restart. if not, it gets stuck with the black screen.
i went trough the troubleshooting tips (SMC reset, PRam reset) and even made an archive and install. unfortunately without any result.
to make things worse my audio stopped to work also. first it did not even show up the devices -" no input/output devices found", after the archive and install the devices were found, but still no sound (except the startupsound)...
...i really do not have any clue what might be the problem, but as i am currently far from home and far from any apple support center, i would very much appreciate every hint or solution.
tnx

it's very strange indeed. my macbook was working without any problems again for 2 days. then i was playing music on itunes when the screen went black(please restart), i could hear some scratchy noises before. again i could not restart. after 30 attempts the computer booted and everything worked except the audio, it said "no output devices found". i noticed that after some hours of rest my computer returns to full funcionality. as i said, i have no means to bring my computer to an apple store. maybe someone can give me an indication of what might be wrong. here is the panic.log:

Powerbook won't boot up! Please help
So here is the story. I recently cracked the screen on my 12" Powerbook on my way to school, so I have been looking for a replacement for a while now. I found someone on craigslist who was selling the exact same powerbook but the motherboard/logic board was out. I bought it from him for cheap hoping i could use the LCD screen to replace my broken one. Also, his had a DVD R burner and mine only had a CD burner so i replaced that also. I went into the computer and did all the necessary changes and put it all back together.
I thought it was all good, but when i boot up the computer, the screen is black and there is no chime or anything. The fan and DVD drive sound like they are moving and on and the caps lock button lights up, but thats it! It hums for about 5 minutes then shuts off.
If anyone can help, that would be great! Thank youI used the cable that was with the DVD drive. Then took that out and put in my old CD-RW drive with its own cable and that worked and it booted up.
I only swapped the screens and not the logic board.
Is there something wrong with the DVD drive then? it was plugged in to the logic board and it didnt boot properly. -
Macbook not booting - big problem - please help!
Ok, here's my story.
The macbook was re-formated, and was working fine. Software updates followed and firmware update as well. It completed well and the computer was running flawlessly for a day or two.
After beeing shut down, it doesn't want to boot anymore.
When i turn it on, it stays on the gray screen with the apple logo and it loads. Before OS X turns one, it shuts down.
I have already tried all the troubleshooting that the help section offers (reset ram, check battery, reset power management etc...)
I called Apple on the phone, the first guy suggested that i restore the firmware using the firmware restore disk that is available on their site. The computer refused to boot the CD. It also refused to boot from Mac OS X installation disk.
I'm really out of options here.
The second time i called, they told me they couldn't much unless i paid, since the warranty is expired.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully i won't have to send it for repairs, because i'm on a tight budget.
Thank you very much.
Joey
[email protected]welcome to macbook forum.
insert your installer disk #1, restart and press alt/option and it will give you all option to boot from.
if it only shows you to boot from installer disk system folder, that might be the sign that your HD is failed.
or you can insert installer disk #1, restart and press C to boot right away from the isntaller dsik.
after select the language, open utilities from menu bar and select utility / and check if your hd is mounted (on the left portion), if it mounted, choose repair disk and reboot (you might need to re-install the OS X if the system folder corrupted). But if it didn't shows up, then it might be failed as suspected.
Since your warranty is already expired, you can consider to get a new HD yourself and install that HD and OS X yourself (cheaper than using apple genius guy at apple store).
Good Luck. -
OSX Server wont boot to login please help!!!
Hi All
I Recently tried to update server to the latest version via the mac app store. it asked for a restart which i did but as it was doing the installation or downloading the update it failed and a message prompted saying that the machine must restart. i hit the restart button and nothing happened after about roughly half an hour i noticed it was still on a grey screen so i forced it to shut down.
i turned the machine on again and now it will not load into the login screen all that happens is the spinning wheel for a few minutes which then freezes.
I tried booting in safe mode to no success i get the same results.
please can anyone assist me i will be eternally grateful.Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. -

IMac won't boot (late 2009) Please help!
I have a late 2009 iMac that I leave on 24/7. I haven't used it in a couple of days, and when I went to use it this morning, something major is wrong. Firstly, my mouse would not wake it up, which wasn't a big concern. I pressed a button on the keyboard and it woke up. I could see my desktop with a message "Time Machine could not backup" or something like that. There was a also a spinning circle and nothing was responsive. So I long-pressed my power button and shut down the computer.
When I powered back on, the Apple logo appeared, but also a gray bar underneath it that began to fill up. The bar seemed to fill up, but then the computer just shut down again. I tried this one more and it did the same thing. So I don't think it's going to boot up.
I booted into recovery by holding Option when starting the comptuer, and then went into Recovery (not my Time Machine, just normal Recovery). I started Disk Manager and I can see all of my drives. My main 1TB drive (internal on my Mac) showed the main drive and then Macintosh HD, which was not mounted. I also saw my Time Machine external drive that was also not mounted. I attempted to Repair my Macintosh HD disk, but it said it could not be repaired. Uh oh, I don't think this is good.
Then I tried to Verify my external drive that has the Time Machine on it. It said it needed to be repaired. I clicked on Repair and it is currently in the process of repairing. It said it checked the file system, volume repair complete, and now it has been on "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." for several minutes now with no sign of progression. I don't know if it's going to complete or not, but I'm leaving it alone for now.
SOOO.... I'm trying to understand what happened? I assume my main Macintosh HD drive failed, either during a Time Machine backup, or perhaps it tried to backup to Time Machine when it started failing? I don't know because like I said, I haven't used the iMac for several days, so I'm not sure when it happened or how long it's been. However, if my Time Machine drive is failing too, that doesn't make sense, does it, unless it got corrupted when the main drive failed?
I need advice on how to proceeed? If the Time Machine drive succesfully repairs, then I will try to boot from that, right? If it does not repair, then what do I do? I believe I have most of my data backed up on Crashplan, but not everything... and if both of the drives failed or corrupted, am I just out of luck?
I appreciate any help...Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Photoshop 7 - Compatible with Windows 7?
I just ordered a new computer (which will have the Windows 7 OS on it) and was wondering if anyone knows if PS 7 would work okay on it? I can't really afford to get any new software right now, and am hoping this works.
