Bootpartition won't mount, fsck finds no errors

Hi guys,
got a strange situation here. My Bootpartition /dev/sda2 won't mount in Arch anymore.
mount /dev/sda2:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
Manchmal liefert das Syslog wertvolle Informationen – versuchen
Sie dmesg | tail oder so
The same error appers during boot. I don't know how Arch can boot without bootpartition but ist does...
Another strange thing is that it mounts fine in Mandriva running on the same machine. Also testdisk under Windows didn't complain.
dmesg | tail
EXT2-fs (sda2): error: corrupt root inode, run e2fsc
e2fsck /dev/sda2
e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)

/dev/sda2: Linux rev 1.0 ext2 filesystem data, UUID=c477713e-ff47-40f3-92f0-537291f24937, volume name "archboot
So what now? Any help is appreciated.

no changes to any partitions were made, just did a fatal "pacman -Syu"...
i removed the /boot completely from fstab and tried to mount the partition manually.
i also recreated the whole partition under ubuntu. copied the files out, deleted the entire partition, recreated it and copied the files back.
arch linux still can't mount it.
also when i'm trying to mount my jfs partition, the "mount" command hangs completely. even "kill -SIGKILL $pid" can't get rid of it.
the jfs partition also mounts fine under ubuntu, i ran tests on every partition under ubuntu, they're all clean.
mounting an jfs partition don't give any logfile entry, dmesg is also empty. it's just hanging. the funny thing is, that ext4 and vfat partitions are mounting fine.
could something be wrong with hal or dbus?
here's e2fsck output:
e2fsck -pvf /dev/sda8

       4 non-contiguous files (11.4%)
       0 non-contiguous directories (0.0%)

--------EDIT:
finally found it!
for some reason (i don't know why) the /boot partition was not mounted during update and thus the kernel26 image was written into the /boot directory of the root partition instead of the /boot partition (where it belongs). this means on next bootup the system was booting with the older kernel but the updated system. maybe some things in filesystem handling were changed between the two versions of the kernel.
i mounted the arch partitions within ubuntu and copied the files from the /boot directory to the partition which should be mounted in /boot on startup.
everything's working now.

  • DVD won't mount in Finder

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.2. When I put in a DVD, and ask that it mount in finder, I get the message ""the operation could not be completed because you do not have enough access privileges" I have two superdrives. The problem occurs with both. I have called apple tech support.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Repaired privileges ("ACL found but not expected in "Library") and repaired disk (no errors)
    2. Logged out and tried another account- same problem.
    3. Installed Leopard on a clean partition. DVD Mounts on clean install. Then ran Migration Assistant. After migrating my software and prefs., the problem reoccurs.
    5. Restarted Finder
    6. Tried DVD in another Computer. It mounts in finder w/o problems.
    7. Zapped PRAM
    8. Googled til my fingers bled.
    9. Pounded on my motherboard vigorously with a ball-peen hammer. Well, OK, I didn't do that, but I'm getting tempted... :o)
This is obviously a corrupted file somewhere. I really REALLY don't want to do a clean install and then reinstall all my software.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks,
    RP

There may be a permissions issue with your home folder, which transferred to the new partition when you migrated. Repairing hard disk permissions with Disk Utility doesn't repair the Home folder. Start the Mac with the Leopard install disc and go to Utilities → Reset Password → Reset user permissions to default. Leopard Cache Cleaner also can repair home folder permissions.

  • External RAID0 won't mount in Finder or Disk Utility

    Hi everyone,
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I have a Western Digital Passport RAID0 that I connect to my 2008 Mac Pro via Firewire 800. It has worked for years. I switched out one of the drives about a year ago after it went bad, but when I did that, Disk Utility was still able to see the two separate drives when plugging it in the first time after switching them out.
This time, when the RAID0 wouldn't mount in Finder, I opened up Disk Utility and neither drive showed up. So I opened up the enclosure and tested both drives in a USB dock. One mounted fine, the other said it was unreadable. So I set the unreadable one aside and switched it out with a same-size replacement drive that I had partitioned as MacOS Extended Journaled (non-case sensitive) with GUID partition table (same as the other drive and all drives on my system).
Reassembled the enclosure and plugged it back in. Still, neither drive is recognizable by Finder or Disk Utility. Verified it has power and that the cables are seated correctly. I also tried USB connection just to be safe.
I do not believe the RAID controller in the enclosure is bad—at least it seems very illogical that a drive and the controller would fail at the same time, as I have it well protected against power surges.
Any thoughts as to something I may be missing or known issues? I upgraded to Yosemite at its public release but successfully used the drive between then and now.
    Thanks again!

  • Exchange 2007 database won't mount due to MapiExceptionCallFailed errors

A server is running Exchange Server 2007 SP2 on Windows Server 2008 64-bit. After a couple years of running smoothly, the Windows Application event log started filling up with several instances every minute of the following error:
    MSExchangeIS (2644) First Storage Group: A bad page link (error -327) has been detected in a B-Tree (ObjectId: 5, PgnoRoot: 10) of database H:\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb (165296 => 3185, 817790).
Messages sent to a specific mailbox on the server started getting returned as undeliverable with the message:
#550 5.2.0 STOREDRV.Deliver: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service reported an error. The following information should help identify the cause of this error: "MapiExceptionCallFailed..."
I assumed that the event log messages and the delivery errors were related so I ran "eseutil /d" on the database but it exited with the message, "Operation terminated with error -1605 (JET_errKeyDuplicate, Illegal duplicate key) after 76.578 seconds. Running
eseutil /mh reports the database state as clean shutdown.
The Exchange database had been backed up nightly using Windows Server 2008 Backup. I restored the latest backup of the .edb file. Unfortunately, the corruption behind the bad page link error seemingly had propagated through the backups because the restored
.edb file had the same issues.
I then attempted to create a new clean database with the goal of then transferring mailbox data from the old to the new as described in the article "Simplifying the Dial Tone Database Recovery Process in Exchange 2007" (http://blogs.technet.com/b/dhardin/archive/2009/08/25/simplifying-the-dial-tone-database-recovery-process-in-exchange-2007.aspx).
I successfully created the new storage group and database with empty instances of all mailboxes but attempts to mount the old database yield this message:
Error: Exchange is unable to mount the database that you specified. Specified database: FASTMAIL\NewStorageGroup\Mailbox Database; Error code: MapiExceptionCallFailed: Unable to mount database. (hr=0x80004005, ec=-344)
I then tried to return to the initial state of having a corrupted database but one that would at least function temporarily for all but the one broken mailbox. The idea would be to instruct individual users to run the Outlook archive command to back their
messages up locally into .pst files. Unfortunately, all attempts to mount the original .edb file yield the same MapiExceptionCallFailed error. I also tried to mount the database after deleting the transaction log files.
I searched the web for information on this error. There are some pages describing similar errors such as "hr=0x80004005, ec=2417" but I could not find any for "ec=-344". Some articles recommend running IsInteg.exe but this utility only works for databases
that are already mounted and I am unable to mount the database.
The Exchange server is running again using the empty database so that the users can at least send and receive mail. I get the sinking feeling that all hope is lost and the historical mail data that was stored on the server is gone for good. Before I face
the pitchforks of the angry mob, I figured that I would at least post an inquiry on an Exchange-related forum.
Are there any other steps I should take to try to recover the old data?

have you checked the health of the database using eseutil /mh "edbfilename.edb" ?
is the state: Clean Shutdown ?
If it is in clean shutdown state, then move the old logs, chk, .jrs files and select the option "This database can be overwritten by a restore" and mount the database.
In case if your database is not in clean shutdown state then you would need to work towards getting the database to clean shutdown using any of the following strategies based on the criteria that the database is affected with !
    1. soft recovery
    2. Hard Recovery
    3. Hard repair

  • External HD won't mount, lots of errors

I bought a 250GB Maxtor internal harddrive and installed it inside a no-name external enclosure. It's connected through USB2. When I connect it, I get a pop-up that says "disk not recognized" with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. I went into Disk Utility and partitioned the disk...still won't mount. I then reinstalled the 10.4.3 combo updater...still no luck. When I try to repair the disk through Disk Utilities it says:
    "Verify and Repair disk “disk1s3”
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
What can I do to get this hard drive to mount and work?

Put it into a FireWire enclosure. USB is basically useless; normally unbootable. You can get a decent FW/USB combo enclosure for under $50. I like this one (I have two): http://www.pcmicrostore.com/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:10500933 ($38 US + S&H).
Note: I have no financial interest with this seller or product.

  • External USB hard drive won't reformat, won't appear in Finder, error: Unable to write to the last block of the device message

So I just got a new MacBook Air and since I had an external USB hard drive (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 1TB) lying around, I decided to use it for back-up. Since I only have just the one hard drive, I decided to partition it into two - one for Time Machine backups, and one for general files (formatted FAT so I could use it with Windows). However, the partitioning failed and I ended up with a partition named disk1s2. Plus, it won't appear on Finder anymore, but it appears in Disk Utility.
I have tried to reformat it, but I always get the message "Unable to write to the last block of the device".
Here's the info about my drive:
    Name: TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 Media
    Type: Disk
Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table
    Disk Identifier: disk1
    Media Name: TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 Media
    Media Type: Generic
    Connection Bus: USB
    USB Serial Number: 1220069C
    Device Tree: IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/XHC@14
    Writable: Yes
    Ejectable: Yes
    Location: External
    Total Capacity: 1 TB
    Disk Number: 1
    Partition Number: 0
    S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported
    And here's for disk1s2:
    Name: disk1s2
    Type: Partition
    Disk Identifier: disk1s2
    Mount Point: Not mounted
    File System: Mac OS Extended
    Connection Bus: USB
    Device Tree: IODeviceTree:/PCI0@0/XHC@14

    Can Be Formatted: Yes
    Bootable: Yes
    Supports Journaling: Yes
    Journaled: No
    Disk Number: 1
    Partition Number: 2
Here's what it says when I run diskutil in Terminal:
    Device Identifier:        disk1
    Device Node:              /dev/disk1
    Part of Whole:            disk1

I didn't have any data in it prior to the failed partitioning attempt, so there aren't any worries of data recovery. But I'd really like to be able to use this drive again, and save some money (external hard drives are expensive where I live). Anyone with any ideas?

I'd also like to add that repairing the disk using Disk Utility does nothing but tell me to reformat the drive. So I'm stuck in a loop here.

  • Disk utility: Disk without errors but won´t mount after testing

I have a strange problem with disk utilities. I tested an external FW drive and disk utility says that the disk is oK. Unfortunately after testing the disk and closing disk utility the disk won´t mount again. I did this several times but without success. Any hints whatßs going wrong?
    Thanks for your help
    Best regards
    Wolfgang

Power down and disconnect the FWHD, Restart, zapping the PRAM as detailed in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 and restart. Reconnect the FWHD and power it up. That should do the trick.

  • WD External HD won't mount after moving/deleting files in 10.9

    Hi, Apple Expert Universe.
    Preface first with my setup:
    15" MacBook Pro w/Retina Display, 2.3 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, OS X Mavericks
Western Digital External Hard Drive, 1TB, USB 2.0
(WD applications removed per WD's suggestion after upgrading to OS X 10.9)
Today I was organizing my files on my external hard drive and computer to free up space and eliminate duplicates.  I ran countless files through the application Gemini and moved and deleted hundreds of GB of data over the course of a couple hours.
At one point, I emptied the trash.  I had had difficulty doing this at first because of some permission issues between users, so I went to Finder and did a CTRL + Click on "Empty Trash" to bypass these issues.  This may or may not be relevant to my problem.
Now, my WD HD will not mount on my computer.  I plug it in (have tried both USB ports) and all that shows is the "WD SmartWare" which always shows up alongside the HD itself under "Devices."
In Disk Utility, my named disk is greyed out under the main HD heading.  (So where it tells me about the formatting of the disk and calls it what I've named it, it's greyed out, but it clearly sees the hard drive attached.) I tried to Repair the disk but it stops after a while and tells me that I need to back up my data, reformat the disk, and restore the backed-up files.
I don't know what to do next.  I have looked in several other forums here and elsewhere in Mac-related sites but haven't found anything that exactly matches my problem.  If you know what to do, or have suggestions that won't risk losing data, or know of another string or forum where this has been successfully resolved, I would greatly appreciate the assistance.  I'm an advanced user, but I am also a dummy who put the only copy of my 100 GB photo library and many other things I would like to keep on this drive.  Needless to say, I'm a little stressed out right now.
One last point: I don't have enough space to put my things on my computer's hard drive, but if I have to I'll go buy a new hard drive.  I was planning on doing that anyways because using UBS 2.0 on a MBP Retina Display kind of defeats the point.  Buying a new external hard drive with Thunderbolt is definitely in my future.
    Thanks very much,
    Christie

    Hi V.K.,
Thanks for your response, can you provide some more details?
OS X has very limited support for NTFS. you need to repair the drive from windows.
How do I do that? I mean the disk works normally in Win XP and it worked normally in the previous OS X version. Btw. I've also installed NTFS-3D which allowed to write on the disk and search from spotlight (of course when it was mounted).
run chkdsk in windows and see if it finds any errors.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
it can also be that the problem is caused by ntfs-3g which is known to have a number of bugs. you can try uninstalling it or plugging in the drive in a mac without ntfs-3g installed.
there is no "issue" to solve.
Well if it worked in 10.5.6 and it works in Win XP and it doesn't work in 10.5.7 I am tempted to say 10.5.7 has an issue.
the fact that you have a problem with one drive on your particular system doesn't mean there is a problem with os x in general. an issue is when all or at least many people have a problem, not one.
furthermore, NTFS is a proprietary file system of Microsoft with closely guarded secrets about its inner workings which is why it has very limited support on other types of operating systems. apple is under no obligation to provide ANY support for something like that. programs like NTFS-3g are essentially unauthorized hacks.

I have a 5-yr-old G5 networked to a new iMac. I have had a 1-TB external HD attached via Firewire 400 to the G5 for about a year. Yesterday it didn't show up on the G5 desktop. I went to this forum, searched under "disc won't mount", got some ideas, ran DiskWarrior and Disk Utility...but nothing worked. They all said the disc was fine, directories rebuilt, etc., but it wouldn't mount. This AM it occurred to me that I had the correct cable, so I tried plugging it into the iMac instead. It worked. The data is safe, the disc shows up, everything seems to be OK, but it won't mount to the G5. Why would that happen, and how can I mount it to the G5? And how likely is the disc to remain accessible?

May I hop onto your thread as I have a similar problem.
I have a 5 year old G5 PMac with 10.5 onto which I have daisy chained two UltraMax 1TB firewire 800 drives. For the last 5 years I have been able, even with out sharing enabled, to connect to the G5 from a G4 Graphite with 10.4, a G4 Powerbook with 10.5 and now a MbP with 10.6.
After completing the login dialogue in the past from any other mac it would give me a list of the G5, it's Hard disk, user directories and the two Firewire Drives. On selecting them the drive would mount onto the desktop as a network drive. This went well until monday when it became temperamental in the morning and after a few restarts and one successful mount it has not shown up since. If I come to the G5 via the Go > Connect to Server I get a dialogue "Could Not connect to the server because the name or password are incorrect". If I try to connect via the network icon in the side window of the finder window I get a network dialogue log in, I get a list of folders and drives but then when selecting the FH drive get an error message which relates to the alias to the G5 Server requiring deleting or fixing.
Originally it just connected without any messing but now unless i make the firewire drive a shared drive the process on the other macs cannot see the firewire drive. NOTE - After having made the internal boot HD of the G5 shared, I can now see and mount this drive from the other macs but not the external drive.
This is causing me to pull my hair out, I have run disk utility, powered down unconnected and reconnected everything .The HD's appear to be working ok from the G5.
I urgently need to connect the FW drive to my G4 to do some work but it also needs to be connected to the G5, has anyone got a clue why I cant get G4 (or any other mac) to mount G5's external FW drive

  • External hard drive won't mount any more

I do a daily backup of the data on my internal HD to an external HD via FireWire. For some reason, the backup froze tonight - 10 minutes went by with no change in the progress. The only way I could get out of it was to quit everything, Force quit the ones that wouldn't respond, then reboot.
The internal HD is fine, but the external HD that I back up to won't mount now. I ran Disk Utility, and it sees the drive, but the Finder doesn't. In Disk Utility, if I click on "Verify Disk," I get this message:
    Verifying volume “FireWire Disk”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
The volume FireWire Disk needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    1 volume checked
    0 HFS volumes verified
    1 volume failed verification
Does this mean I have lost everything on the external disk? What do I need to do to get that disk running and mounted again? There were other files on the external disk, besides the backup. There were some large video files that I will have to capture from tape again if they cannot be recovered.
    Thank you for your help!

    Cornelius,
Thank you for your reply. I was able to get out of the situation through luck. I read on another forum a post by someone in a similar situation, and they said that the drive would mount on a different Mac. So I tried plugging in the drive to my old iMac, and sure enough it mounted, although when Disk Utility was run, the same error message was given.
Fortunately I was able to copy the files I need from the drive to the iMac's internal drive. The copy worked even though there was obviously a problem with the external drive. Then I erased the external drive using Disk Utility, and copied the files back onto it.
So I'm back where I started, and I didn't lose any files that I really need. But it was pretty scary for a while - I thought I would have to re-do a lot of work. Fortunately I don't, but I realize how valuable it is to have a second backup in case the first one fails. I am now going to duplicate everything onto the iMac's drive until the project is finished and I can archive it all. I still don't know how the disk got so messed up, and I'm surprised that a disk can get corrupted so easily.

  • My external hard drive (G-DRIVE Slim 500GB) won't mount?

My external hard drive (G-DRIVE Slim 500GB) won't mount?
All of a sudden my hard drive didn't show up in my finder. I checked in disk utility and it was there but greyed out. If I tried mounting it told me that could not be mounted and that I should try 1st aid.
When I try to verify disk I get a message to tell me that the disk needs to be repaired with the information shown below.
    Verifying volume “G-DRIVE slim”
Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.

    Checking extended attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
The volume G-DRIVE slim could not be verified completely.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
When I perfrom the disk repair it tells me that the disk cannot be repaired and I should back up as much of my files as possible, reformant the disk, and restore my backed up files. The information shown is below:
Verify and Repair volume “G-DRIVE slim”

When I try the same thing on another Mac Book Pro I have the same situation but it tells me the disk is ok and still won't mount after.
I'm not sure what to do..........

You need to make your own decision on which to purchase.  Read up on them on their websites because each do something a little different.

  • External HD Won't Mount - Force Ejected it and now won't mount

    Hi All,
I seem to remember this happening to me before. Isn't there somewhere in the filesystem that OSX writes a file if a drive was mounted? And if you ejected a USB disk incorrectly, it cannot ever mount again?
I can't seem to find that fix anywhere.
ANYWAY, my problem is this. My TimeMachine backup disk (Western Digital (WD) 500 GB MyBook) won't mount (attached via USB). It doesn't show up in the Finder. It DOES show up in Disk Utility but when I click Repair Disk it promptly says:
"Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
I really don't think the disk is fried. I think there is just something keeping it from being mounted. I could be wrong.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Struggling with this waaay too late on a Sunday night.
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6 (10A421a)

  • External disk won't mount after 10.5.7 upgrade

    Hi,
I know there's problem with Buffalo external HD; mine is Lexcron 3.5'' external case and it won't mount neither. I tried PRAM restart, and if I go to Disk Utility and try to repair, it gives me the following message:
Verify and Repair volume “Dirty Hary”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
It worked with 10.5.6 and it still works with Win XP (it's NTFS format).
Is there something that I can do?
Will this issue be solved in Snow Leopard?
Thanks in advance for any kind of constructive info (I've already read threads with Buffalo issue, but I didn't find any thread giving a solution).

    Hi V.K.,
Thanks for your response, can you provide some more details?
OS X has very limited support for NTFS. you need to repair the drive from windows.
How do I do that? I mean the disk works normally in Win XP and it worked normally in the previous OS X version. Btw. I've also installed NTFS-3D which allowed to write on the disk and search from spotlight (of course when it was mounted).
run chkdsk in windows and see if it finds any errors.

it can also be that the problem is caused by ntfs-3g which is known to have a number of bugs. you can try uninstalling it or plugging in the drive in a mac without ntfs-3g installed.
there is no "issue" to solve.

  • 10.4.9 and now USB Hard Drive(s) Won't Mount

After running the combo updater on my Intel Core Duo iMac 17" my LaCie BigDisk won't mount nor will my 60GB USB hard drive that I use to backup my MacBook (though this drive DOES mount on the MacBook without any problems). All other USB devices (and my 160GB Western Digital USB Hard Drive and 300GB Seagate FireWire hard drive mount and work fine on the iMac). My LaCie BigDisk wouldn't mount on my MacBook at first, but eventually mounted ONCE on the MacBook. I have tried repairing permissions, rebooting, using an older IOUSBFamily.kext (that was a nightmare and required some CLI experience to undo without having to find a firewire cable that long enough to reach around my desk to use the iMac via Target Mode on the MacBook good thing I saved the original).
At any rate here is the error output in Console.app:
