BORIS TEXT GENERATOR

I am trying to create an effect where an extreme close up of the title (in red) fills up the screen with a solid color, then slowly pulls back, or zooms out to reveal that the solid color is the zoom in of a letter which is part of the title. I've tried using motion to begin the effect at 1,000 % scale reducing to 100%. That however doesn't fully encompass the screen with the entirety of the solid red color. I've tried combining that tool with enlarging the actual font but the two won't work in conjunction with each other. Ultimately I can't animate the title reveal that I want. If I am explaining myself clearly enough could anyone offer any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Do not use the motion properties to do this. Use Title 3D and animate it's scale and distance values. Do not make the color red. It compresses very badly. Make it about 190 red with a little green and blue.

Boris Text is missing

I've updated to FCS2 and since then I've had to reinstall the software 3 times for various reasons. Now my Boris 3D text is not in the effects tab, nor is the text scrambler or any Boris text generator. The plugin is there and I can copy and paste old 3D text into new projects, but I can't just go to the effects tab select the text generator. Can anyone tell me where I can place the Boris files so Final Cut recognizes them? Or is something else I can do so Final Cut recognizes them? I'm using a G5 with Dual 2 Ghz processors, 2.5 GB Ram and OS 10.4.11.

I'd suggest you don't update, but you rebuild your startup disk from the ground up... you needn't install earlier versions, but just have their serials handy... that's all you'll need.

What's wrong with Boris 3D Text Generator.....

I've tried to use this tool but the clunky interface and 10 second delay while you open this up in it's own window drives me crazy. But I am trying again to use Boris 3D for subtitles.
However, I just compared the text to FCP's text generator and Boris seems much softer and not nearly as crisp as FCP Text. The concern is that I have to render the FCP text - maybe this accounts for the difference? Boris does not give me a red line. So it's a dilemma - which to use? It's a pain to have to render subtitles - but Boris has that awful delay to deal with and just does not seem as crisp - any one any thoughts on this?

Not sure why you're getting no Real Time playback on the FCP text filter (red render bar) Regardless, even though the Boris titles will play back RT they ultimately need to be rendered as well (green render bar) and will likely look crisper once you do. Boris Title 3D should give you the best results. You could also try Live Type.

Boris 3D Text Generator?

I have Final Cut Studio 2 and when I launched Final Cut Pro 6 and tried to use the Boris 3D text generator and could not find it. I used this tool a lot in Final Cut Pro 5. Any ideas?

UPDATE!!
I finally figured it out...well it just started working. Here's what I did. I have G5 at work with final cut pro 5. I copied the BorisFX folder to my thumb drive and transfered the folder to my iMac at home and got this message. "A newer item "BorisFX" already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you are moving?" I clicked stop and relaunched Final Cut Pro 6 and Boris was an option in the drop down...WOW!! Not sure what happen, but wanted to share this with everyone just in case you have the same problem I did.

Why is the text generator corrupting my sequence?

I'm trying to use the Text generator, but it's corrupting my sequence playback.
I keep having to quit FCE and restart it, in order to get my uncorrupted sequence playback to return.
Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I can "reset" from within FCE, without quitting and restarting, in order to restore correct sequence playback?

Try trashing the FCE preferences.
Are you using the FCE text generator or Boris? (part of FCE)
Boris is recommended.

Boris text render problem

Hello,
I am having a problem with the Boris Title Crawl text generator. The problem manifests itself as a field dominance problem. Here is a description of how to create the problem:
1) Create a new project in FCE (I am using FCE 4)
2) Drag the Boris Title Crawl generator to the timeline
3) Open the clip in the viewer
4) Enter some text into the generator
5) Select the "roll" animation style
6) Render the clip (IMPORTANT)
Set the zoom in the canvas to 100% and play the clip. Notice the interlace artifacts, particularly in the curved parts of the text. Note that the fields appear to be *out of order*. That is, the upper field should be the lower field and vis-a-versa.
I've been trying to figure out how to fix this problem. Applying a deinterlace filter cleans it up but you loose resolution. I've tried applying the "shift field" filter but this does not clean up the problem, though a setting of "-1" makes a small improvement. This appears to either be a problem with the Boris generator or some field dominance problem. The field dominance for the clip is "not set". Changing this setting does not fix the problem. Field dominance for the sequence is "Upper" which is what is expected for the HD sequence.
Any thoughts?

Tried to reply to your message but it bounced.
The field order does not appear reversed to me. You're seeing the correct interlacing. You're not seeing interlacing on the LT project because it's project properties have the field order set to none. If you set the project properties inside the LT project to upper you will see the same interlacing. Interlacing is correct for 1080i material. If you don't want to render with interlacing set the sequence field dominance to none and re-render it.

How to cut and paste long Word document into text generator?

I have a very long list of attributions in a Word document.
When I cut and paste it into the "Sample Text" area, it goes in fine.
But when I try to look at it ... either as simple text or, preferred, scrolling ... I only get parts of the document.
I can correct it by adding a 'return' in the middle of every few words.
But my document is so long, it would take a long time to do that one by one.
Solutions sought: How to just import the whole document and have it scroll, zip-zip?!

Thank you DH and skalaki, I had not known of the Boris title generator. Funny, I had looked in the FCE online manual until 'titling' and editing text ... didn't see mention of that.
In any case ... I've now found it and trust I'll be able to figure it out.

Boris title generator

just started using the boris title generator (title 3D). maybe i'm missing something but is there any way to see the background video that the title is supered over?

Place the Boris clip on the track above your video in FCP's Timeline. Place the Timeline's playhead so it shows both the Boris clip and the video clip in the Canvas window. Double-click the clip to load it into the Viewer. Click on the tab in the Viewer window with the Boris controls. While watching video AND text in the Canvas window, make adjustments to the controls as needed.

Is there a way to create a random text generator in AE 4 ?

Hi all,
I'm a new user of an old version of After Effects 4.1 on Windows 7.
I just gained the help on this forum to create a digital clock countdown with the Numbers Effect and the Timecode 30 setting in AE 4 and I noticed that there is a random numbers generator in that effect too.
But now I'm in the Text Effect and I'm able to put my text/title on the solid layer in a composition and apply some MM scripts to the text... mainly I've just been able to use the 'Blink' script and manipulate that script a little to make it flash faster or slower.
Since AE 4 cannot use .jsx scripts or Expressions, I guess I'm limited to MM scripts (which I've been searching for) and the built-in plug-ins and effects... but I can't find a random text generator... like where the text scrambles as if it is trying to break a code. This effect that I'm trying for would be similar to a scrambled text effect generated in Swish or other FLASH text effect generators.
So if anyone knows how to create a scrambled or random text effect in the old After Effects 4.1, please let me know.

Yes, I'm using AE 4.1, per my explanation in my other posts about the timecode effect and codecs.
Since there is a built-in random number generator in AE 4.1 that is part of the Numbers Effect, I thought there may still be an after market Effect, plug-in or mm script for a random text generator.
I've been searching the web, but its a big place.

Repeat Title Color in Text Generator

In Text Generator, how do I repeat the same shade of color picked on the color wheel?

In the color picker you can drag the color into a tray at the bottom to store it. The magnifying gloass is a color picker to let you suck a color from anywhere on the screen.

Boris Text 3D crashing FCP

This started as a missing Text editor. When I'd open the controls tab and try to open the Boris text editor, the pop-up window was nowhere to be found. I trashed my prefs but that didn't solve it. Now, whenever I try to open the text editor, all of FCP crashes. When I try to restart FCP, the start-up crashes and it never opens. Trashing the prefs DOES solve that issue and I'm able to get into FCP. But still can't access the Boris text editor. Any ideas?

I've had Boris lock up fcp several times-- enough that I always do a save before opening it. This usually only happens when the system has been up for a couple of days with tons of editing going on. A simple force quit of FCP and a machine restart has always done it for me-- hence the save every time I open Boris. My autosave is set VERY short, but you can lose a heck of a lot of work in 5 minutes if you're on a roll.
I know this doesn't solve anything, just my observation. I'm thinking that the tool has not advanced along with osx and it's starting to get buggy. Too bad because it used to be a solid and useful app. Perhaps Apple isn't pushing this because now motion does so much excellent title work...

Text Generator button won't work

I am in the middle of getting a project done for this Monday. Last night, I was able to use the text generator button in the viewer. Today, it won't work. What have I done to disengage it? Help is needed quickly.

Yes, it is a drop-down menu and when I clicked on it, nothing happened—not even the tool tip. However, I just figured out the problem. Somehow, late last night when I was working, the cat began walking on the computer desk and keyboard. In my haste to get him out of the way, I must have clicked on the choice to show my preferred transitions and such only. I had been exploring some of the menus looking for a feature I couldn't remember how to access. Once I clicked on show all just now, I was back in business. Before I did that, I couldn't see any of the transition choices or other options under Effects. Whew, that's a relief. Now, keep your fingers crossed there are enough hours left in this weekend for me to finish this project before I have to show the presentation on Monday night. Off to get more coffee. Thanks for trying to help.

Wandering colors when animating text generator

Just tried a simple Basic Animation of font color in a generated text block for a title, as on pp 188-90 in The Book. Instead of going from pale blue to deep blue between keyframes, my text flickered through most of the rainbow. Tried reversing the circular arrow adjacent to the color swatch but it seemed to happen either way.
To tell the whole truth, the problem started when I used three keyframes in this short text generator (superimposed on a black slug.) I wanted the color to come up to bright blue and then darken to black along with a dissolve into the first clip of my sequence. Was this too much to ask FCE 3.5 to do?
Any ideas or insight appreciated.

Thanks, Tom. You've got my number - I probably got a little carefree with the buttonpushing, and of course the devil is in the details.
What I eventually did was revert all the way back to a clean sequence and settle for a simpler 2-keyframe effect, which did work fine. But now that I know it's possible I will try for the cooler up/down 3-keyframe effect again.

Final Cut Express Text Generator - Custom Position

Is there a way to customize the position of the lower 3rd text generator? I'm looking to move it lower than its preset position.

Set the position to whatever you want it to be and make it a Favorite Effect.
Select the text effect and in the menu bar: Effects > Make Favorite.
Of course it might go haywire if you then try to use a different typeface or size.
