BPEL Anyone?

I saw an excellent presentation on Seam, and aside from its integration with JSF and EJB 3.0, I was particularly interested in how they worked in JBoss's version of BPEL, jBPM. I'm not 100% sold on BPEL, but it definitely seems like a great way to reduce coupling and complexity in larger enterprise systems.
Anyone been using BPEL? Ready for prime time yet? Or was it a horrendous mistake that is now being undone? :^)

I've looked at it as a replacement for Tibco's BusinessWorks application which is one of the biggest dogs I have ever worked with. Before anyone asks, I don't have time to describe all the issues with that tool. Just know that it is extremely painful.
The WYSIWIG editor for the workflow or the tool itself? (Or both, I guess)
Having said that, the idea behind it is pretty good for a workflow type archtecture. BPEL seems to be a standardization of that kind of environment. The one thing that I would caution you on is trying to do too much in that kind of environment. It's not a replacement for a text based language like Java. It's a complimentary tool. If it is like BW (and I'm pretty sure it is) it excels at modelling high level transactions and business logic. We are talking coarse-grained steps here. Big time. Use good OO design to build the lower-level system logic (using Java most likely) and call it from BPEL.
That's my initial impression as well. I remember reading in "Pragmatic Programmer" the idea of a 'blackboard' for really complex workflows and business transactions. To me, BEPL seemed a good way to implement a 'blackboard'.
At least in the original Seam presentation, Gavin King went over the various additional 'scopes' that Seam provides. One is 'between' request and session, called 'conversational'. Pretty slick in that it allows MDI usage of a web app without contentions in HttpSession. More pertinent to this discussion, though, was 'business process' scope, which was 'beyond' application scope. Bascially, he hooked Seam into jBPL to store incomplete workflows until they were ready to go to the database for storage.
Anyway, there are lots of free impementations. Give it a swing and let me know if I make any ddamn sense.
Definitely makes sense. And thanks for the as always salient reply!
One thing that BW desperately needs is a good scripting-language (Python, perhaps) based activity. Some things don't quite warrant a whole Java object model and don't quite work with boxed and arrows either. You might want to look for a way to do that before you end up with a big mess, if you start using it.
I'm thinking of handling large-scale events in the system (say when an application is completed and can be processed internally, then when ready for customer review and then final handling.) So, really, I'm thinking of using BPEL to represent large components in the system as state machines, governing the allowable transitions from one, large component state (or system state) to another for a given workflow. (Sorry to be vague, but I'm trying to keep things at a high level now).
I also think there's room for a rules engine somewhere in the mix. The workflow itself is fairly standardized, though there are multiple paths to a given component event. It's in each component that regulations vary from state to state or county to county. So it seemed to me that one could get a lot of bang for the buck via:
Using EJB 3.0 for transaction management and JPA for O/R mapping. Much of the system already uses Hibernate.
Use BPEL for high-level state transitions in workflow that are too complex to model in either EJB or POJO's, since most of the transitions are 'orthogonal' to the object model itself, similar to aspects.
Use a Rules Engine for the complex variety of validations that occur in the object model itself. Again, so that the object model is cleaner and concerned with fewer duties.Finally, it seems to me that one additional advantage, though I am dubious it can be achieved in reality, is that theoretically a business analyst can develop BPEL graphs and potentially write additional rules engine ... err ... rules if the grammar is English-enough.
Ah, I'm rambling. I'm just honestly excited about BPEL and not totally sure what the best use of it might be. :^)

  • Problem invoking a web service from soa11g BPEL.

    Hi ,
    I am trying to invoke a web service from soa bpel 11g composite.
    We have the wsdl, wsdl URL of the web service along with the user name , password credentials.
    Initially w/o any WS policy attached and testing the composite, it fails with the below message
    *<fault>*
    *<bpelFault>*
    *<faultType>0</faultType>*

    So I have gone back to the composite and added the WS policy (oracle/wss_username_token_client_policy) by Right clicking on web service -> Configure WS Policy -> Security -> oracle/wss_username_token_client_policy -> OK.
    After this I have added the following binding properties 'oracle.webservices.auth.username' , 'oracle.webservices.auth.password' with the respective values and deployed it again.
    Even then I face the same issue. I have looked into the EM console and found the HTTP username and password properties were blank for this Web service even though the WS policy was attached.
    Later I have tried editing the username pwd from the EM console, only to find out that the composite was now failing in the previous step (an ordinary db adapter with a select statement) even before it reaches the web service invocation.
    If I redeploy the composite, the http username and pwd properties in the EM console are erased and when i test it, it errors out at the web service invocation with the same issue again.
    Any pointers on how to solve this issue ??
    How can I figure out what is the security policy the web service is using ??
    Regards,
    Shiva Kiran

    Hi,
    Can anyone help me with this ??
    I guess I am not able to send the authorization credentials via the request to the web service invocation.
    Plz help ! This is a bit urgent..

    I may add that, the WSDL generated is using "soap:enc:array ", rpc style.
    Can anyone tell me the reason and suggest .

    Hi Marc,
    Thanks for the guidancer. But sir, i am unable to detect at which place i have to do the required changes.I found p_request as a parameter in the method only in the interface only.
    As bcos ultimately , i am generating the tomcat /axis web service (WSDL) from the java class, which is using 2 Request and response java bean, in which they are doing someing like this:
    private static org.apache.axis.description.TypeDesc typeDesc =
    new org.apache.axis.description.TypeDesc(LoanDataPersistRequest.class, true);
    static {
    typeDesc.setXmlType(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("http://dtos.demo.com", "LoanDataPersistRequest"));
    org.apache.axis.description.ElementDesc elemField = new org.apache.axis.description.ElementDesc();
    elemField.setFieldName("customerName");
    elemField.setXmlName(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "customerName"));
    elemField.setXmlType(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "string"));
    elemField.setNillable(true);
    etc etc...................}
    And second thing is when the WSDL is generated, from that the stubs and skeletons is generated to test the service.
    There in the Stub i found out "p_request" in this place:
    private static void _initOperationDesc1(){
    org.apache.axis.description.OperationDesc oper;
    org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc param;
    oper = new org.apache.axis.description.OperationDesc();
    oper.setName("storeLoanData");
    param = new org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc(*new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "p_request")*, org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc.IN, new javax.xml.namespace.QName("http://dtos.demo.com", "LoanDataPersistRequest"), com.demo.dtos.LoanDataPersistRequest.class, false, false);
    oper.addParameter(param);
    oper.setReturnType(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("http://dtos.demo.com", "LoanDataPersistResponse"));
    oper.setReturnClass(com.demo.dtos.LoanDataPersistResponse.class);
    oper.setReturnQName(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "storeLoanDataReturn"));
    oper.setStyle(org.apache.axis.constants.Style.RPC);
    oper.setUse(org.apache.axis.constants.Use.ENCODED);
    _operations[0] = oper;
    And in skeleton :
    static {
    org.apache.axis.description.OperationDesc _oper;
    org.apache.axis.description.FaultDesc _fault;
    org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc [] _params;
    _params = new org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc [] {
    new org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc(*new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "p_request")*, org.apache.axis.description.ParameterDesc.IN, new javax.xml.namespace.QName("http://dtos.demo.com", "LoanDataPersistRequest"), com.demo.dtos.LoanDataPersistRequest.class, false, false),
    oper = new org.apache.axis.description.OperationDesc("storeLoanData", params, new javax.xml.namespace.QName("", "storeLoanDataReturn"));
    _oper.setReturnType(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("http://dtos.demo.com", "LoanDataPersistResponse"));
    _oper.setElementQName(new javax.xml.namespace.QName("urn:com.demo.service", "storeLoanData"));
    _oper.setSoapAction("");
    myOperationsList.add(oper);
    if (_myOperations.get("storeLoanData") == null) {
    _myOperations.put("storeLoanData", new java.util.ArrayList());
    ((java.util.List)_myOperations.get("storeLoanData")).add(_oper);
    PLease suggest if i make some changes in stub and skeleton how it would reflect the WSDL... or else please suggest where shud i do the required changes.

    Looks like the server is unable to connect to the dehydration database.
    A standard installation would have this data source setup as part of the installation.
    "jdbc/BPELServerDataSourceWorkflow"
    This again uses the connection pool "BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL"
    And the name of the data source is "BPELServerDataSourceWorkflow"
    There are a few checks that you can perform.
    1. Check if the dehydration database is up.
    If no then this should be up and running.
    2. Go to the EM and use {test connection} for "BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL"
    If comes back with error then check if the dehydration database credentials has changed post installation.
    There are a few other datasources that share the same connection pool. Check if these are working too.

  • Task activities not getting generated properly in BPEL

    I am using the Jdev 11g TP3 (from OTN). Installation went through fine. However I observed a interesting issue with HumanTask/BPEL and I was wondering if someone faced similar such problems before, if so, how to rectify the issue. Here is the description of the issue:
    1. Created a Empty SOA composite project
    2. Dragged and dropped BPEL Process in the component palette. Designed a Asynchronous process.
    3. Dragged and dropped a HumanTask. Did not expose as an composite. Designed a single approver workflow. In the project schema, choose the schema from BPEL input.
    4. Wired BPEL to HumanTAsk
    5. In the BPEL flow, I dragged the HumanTask to the flow. Everything appears to be correct. I clicked on "Ok" after associating with BPEL variable.
    Now when I examine the BPEL flow, a scope before the BPEL switch is empty. There are no BPEL activities generated. This is a very simple case of BPEL and HumanTask and I am not sure as to why the tasks not getting generated properly in BPEL flow.
    Has anyone experienced this issue or any ideas as to why this could happen?

    After going through the exercise several times, I finally found out the reason as to why the BPEL activities are not getting generated. In the Human task form for the title, since it is a fixed string in my case I put something like the one given below:
    Title : "APPROVE ORDER"
    When you have fixed string within double quotes it does not generate BPEL activities correctly. You can try and u will see the problem.
    My real question is should not throw proper error message when you try to drag and drop the HumanTask to BPEL flow.

  • BPEL - Handling invocation timeouts and Modifying Partner Link endpoints

    Hi,
    We've built the basic functionality that we need in our BPEL process but are facing 2 specific questions that we are a bit stuck with and would really appreciate some help on..
    1. Our BPEL process calls an external synchronous web service. We have a requirement that if this external web service is unable to respond to our BPEL process within a fixed timespan (say 1 minute), we need to treat this as a timeout and move on. Can anyone suggest what settings are required for this?
    2. The second query is with regards to a likely situation we will face after go-live. If the URL of the external service changes (lets say the service moves from one server to another), ideally we would want to be able to configure this URL change rather than have to modify the WSDL and rebuild the BPEL project in JDev with the new WSDL. Does the BPEL Admin Console provide any such feature? As far as I can recall from a project a couple of years ago, Websphere Process Server did provide such a feature and I'm looking for something similar here but have not found it yet. I am not looking to use dynamic endpoints within our flow - just for an admin feature that would allow me to modify the URL externally via the console.
    Would really appreciate any suggestions on these 2 points..
    Thanks and Regards,
    TB

    In response to your second query -
    a) you don't need to rebuild the BPEL project in Jdev in order to change the wsdl file. If you update the WSDL file with new values for your endpoint simply clear the WSDL cache and the process will pick up the new values in the new instances created from thereon.
    b) or if you dont' want to update the wsdl manually, you can write a piece of java code to change the endpoint URL's for the deployed BPEL processes using the code given here
