Brainteaser: using liquify and a reference layer
Hi folks. This is a tough nut to crack for me, and I didn't find a solution ... maybe you have a good idea?
I want to use a "reference layer" within the liquifiy filter GUI.
Now what do I mean by "reference layer"? Sometimes I need to work on a layer ("working layer") and whatever I do on this layer has to get its bearings based on reference points or elements on a superposed layer ("reference layer"), that I temporarily make semi-transparent. So far so good.
Now I would need the "forward warp tool" from the liquify filter GUI for my "working layer". Problem is that when I enter the liquify filter GUI, I can of course only see my "working layer" now (whereas I would still need to see my "reference layer" somehow).
Any workarounds?

Have you used the 'Use Backdrop' feature in the Liquify GUI? I'd recommend placing your reference layer in front of your liquify layer and drop the opacity. Should do the trick.

... forms the basis of the game board, and this is how I have implemented the dragging and dropping of pieces. My game, however is slightly different as there is a single neutral piece (the ball), which players can manipulate by moving one of their pieces to the square containing the ball, then moving the ball to another location.
When a player clicks and drags a piece to the ball square, then releases, I want to attach the 'ball' JLabel to the mouse so that the player can move it around the board WITHOUT holding down the mouse button. Then, when the player clicks again the ball is moved to the new square.
The only problem I have is attaching the 'ball' to the mouse so I can move it around (without the user having to hold the mouse button down). I thought about tried using the drag layer, but I couldn't quite get that working. I also thought about using the mouseMoved(MouseEvent e) and mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) methods.
I'm pretty new to this coding stuff, so any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!Using the drag layer isn't going to work unless you are using an honest to goodness component for the ball. Your other option might be to try to use the glasspane, which is a pain in the neck, or a floating window component.

I am Using Photoshop CC 14.2.1x32. When I choose a layer in the layers palette and then use the move tool to re-position an element on that layer, PS forces a jump to another layer. The only way I can re-position is by using free transform on the layer I want to work on. What is happening with PS CC? Please help. About to dump CC and go back to CS 6
You might have been able to change the Auto Select option from the default Group to the usually more user friendly Layer. It's one heck of a useful feature, so get used to using it if you can. For instance, if you have a lot of layers, it can make it a lot easier just to find a particular layer in the layers panel.

When I try to use the clone stamp another layer of my picture is copied on the photo I'm working on. Is this a de@@@@fect or is there a tool I can use to stop it and return to normal usage of the clone stamp?
The "Sample Field" letters are very dim. After punching several times the right click revels "Clone stamp mode". The next little circle has a line through it and after several right clicks, it says: "turn on to ignore adjustment layers when cloning," Despite this I cannot get any kind of a response to change any of the existing entries. Is there a way to do a spelling quiz in captivate using images and not questions as reference. Specifically i want have blank lines underneath an image, where the user looks at the image and types the correct letters to fill in the blank. For example a picture of a dog, with this _ _ _ underneath for the user to fill in, or in some cases perhaps having them fill in the vowel like so "d_g".I must have audio with this , as the students will be able to listen to the audio sound out the word phonetially to help them be able to type it!

So in general why would we use a cursor and a for loop to do update in a stored procedure?
Why wouldnt we just use a single update statement ?
is there compelling reason for using a cursor and a for loop: I am reading some code from a co-worker that the business logic for the select (set need to be updated) is complex but the update logic is simple (just set a flag to (0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4).
But eventually the select come down to a key (row_id) so I re-write it using just a single sql statement.
The size of the main table is about 2.6 to 3million rows
Any thoughts on that??

PL/SQL is not that different from a SQL perspective than any other SQL client language like Java or C# or C/C++. PL/SQL simply integrates the 2 languages a heck of a lot better and far more transparent than the others. But make no mistake in that PL/SQL is also a "client" language from a SQL perspective. The (internal) calls PL/SQL make to the SQL engine, are the same (driver) calls made to the SQL engine when using Java and C and the others.
So why a cursor and loops in PL/SQL? For the same reason you have cursors and loops in all these other SQL client languages. There are the occasion that you need to pull data from the SQL engine into the local language to perform some very funky and complex processing that is not possible using the SQL language.
The danger is using client cursor loop processing as the norm - always pulling rows into the client language and crunching it there. This is not very performant. And pretty much impossible to scale. Developers in this case views the SQL language as a mere I/O interface for reading and writing rows. As they would use the standard file I/O read() and write() interface calls.
Nothing could be further from the truth. SQL is a very advance and sophisticated data processing language. And it will always be faster than having to pull rows to a client language and process them there. However, SQL is not Turing complete. It is not the procedural type language that most other languages we use, are. For that reason there are things that we cannot do in SQL. And that should be the only reason for using the client language, like PL/SQL or the others, to perform row crunching using a client cursor loop. -
Using multiple 'and' conditions in a SQL query
Is it possible to reduce the SQL required to query using multiple 'and' conditions, e.g. I have a query like the following:

It doesn't quite run as is because the stat.amount_paid query value is 'is null', while the others are 'C'. I tried amending the relevant line to various versions of the following:-

I am trying to use Labview and RP1210 compliant hardware to connect to a truck J1939 bus and receive messages.
Specifically I am attempting to read data frames using the RP1210_READMESSAGE . am able to configure the hardware and send a message to the J1939 bus. . I think I have not configured something correctly. I can use the RP1210_SENDMESSAGE and see the message I have sent on the bus using CANalyzer When I use the RP1210_READMESSAGE I get the timestamp from a message and the return from the function sends back the correct number of bytes (the number matches the number of bytes I sent out plus four bytes from the timestamp). What I am having trouble with is actually receiving the data. I have had the same type of behavior from two different hardware (Vector CANcase XL and Nexiq USB Link), so I don't think the issue is vendor specific.
Has anyone been able to make the RP1210_RECIEVEMESSAGE function work correctly?

I have already tried that. The links are the NI RP1210 wraper. The problem I am having is using labview to interface with the RP1210 layer. The RecieveMessage char*fpchAPIMessage this is the output which is a pointer to a cahracter array. In this variable I can receive the timestamp of the message but not the message. The retun showns the correct amount of bytes are aviaable (18 for a 8 byte message) but I can only get the 4 byte timestamp I think I have to dereference this pointer to view the data. I am not sure how to fix this. -
When do VI and queue references become invalid?

I have a fairly complicated problem, so please bear with me.
1) I have a reentrant SubVI (let's call it VI "Assign") that has an input cluster of (VI ref, queue ref) (let's call the cluster type "Refs"). If the VI ref is invalid (first execution), the VI ref and queue ref are assigned values and are passed on as an output cluster of same type. (The VI does other things too, but for simplicity only this is important.)
2) The VI that calls VI "Assign" (let's call it VI "Store") is not reentrant and has a local variable of type "Refs" that is wired to the input and output of VI "Assign". This VI effectively stores the references. The references returned by VI "Assign" are always valid right after the call, but after the problem condition described below, they are invalid at the start of all calls before they are passed to VI "Assign".
3) VI "Store" is called by multiple non-reentrant VIs, so the local variables of VI "Assign" retain their values (Has been tested and verified to retain their values). The VI causing the problem in this case is a template VI of which multiple copies are launched (let's call it VI "Template").
The problem is that the moment an instance of VI "Template" is closed, the queue reference becomes invalid, although the actual variant value of the reference remains the same. The VI ref can become invalid or not, depending on small changes, but is always reproducible. I assume there must be some similarity between VI and queue refs. After spending some time researching, the Labview help states for the Open VI Ref component "If you do not close this reference, it closes automatically after the top-level VI associated with this function executes." In this case I assumed it means that the moment the reentrant VI "Assign" finishes, the references will get cleared ?? So I made a non-reentrant VI (let's call it VI "NR Assign") that only assigns values to the references and VI "Assign" now calls this VI (It effectively does what I described VI "Assign" does). I keep this VI alive by using it in a VI which never terminates and since it never terminates, the references should never become invalid. Anyone still following? This didn't solve the problem though. If I reproduce the same scenario using only one instance of the template VI, it works just fine. Furthermore, the VI and queue references are never closed, to aid analysis of the problem. Can anyone shine some light on what happens when a template VI terminates? Could this be the problem?

All LabVIEW refnums do get deallocated automatically when the top-level VI in whose hierarchy the refnum was created goes idle (stops executing). You will have to make sure that the creation of a refnum is done inside a VI hierarchy that stays running for the entire time you want to use that refnum.

A discrepancy occurred between Goods Receipt (GR) and Invoice Receipt (IR). This needs to be cleared. Examples of situations where this occurs are:
1. If the goods have been received, the vendor hasnt invoiced for the goods and wont be invoicing (the vendor has gone out of business). Use MR11
2. An invoice with reference to a Purchase Order was paid through accounts payable FI instead of procurement. Use MR11
3. The goods were received and sent back to the vendor for poor quality. The vendor was accidentally paid and we will not be reimbursed due to bankruptcy of the vendor Use MR11
4. Quantity ordered = 100 ea. at a unit price of $1.00, receive quantity of 97 ea. at a unit price of $1.00. If the remaining balance of 3 ea. will not be shipped, purchaser needs to reduce the open quantity on the purchase order to reflect the actual amount received. DO NOT Use MR11
Maintenance of the GR/IR Clearing account should be done regularly. Its recommended to be done weekly for both IR surplus and GR surplus. Run IR surplus with movement up to today. For GR surplus, run maintenance with movement one or two months old.

I am unable to update my album art on my iMac since I started using Match (and after upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.3). A message advises that it's not possible to removed old artwork if it's embedded. How can I 'unembed' old cover art and replace?
Normally artwork recovered with iTunes is stored as a separate artwork file and iTunes refers to that file to display artwork when you click on a track. However, if you then copy the file to another player the artwork file is left behind and the track will not display the artwork on the other player. To get around this it is possible to embed the artwork in the music file itself so it always travels with the file. Artwork can be embedded by you or files from third party sources may arrive with embedded artwork. iTunes apparently now won't replace artwork for such files. You can accomplish this by completely deleting artwork for a file or set of files in Get Info, then getting iTunes to fetch artwork which will then be set as a reference file rather than being embedded.
I use an old iTunes so unless you are using an ancient iTunes it won't help for me to give you great details. To erase artwork I simply get info on a series of files and check the box next to the artwork box without adding any artwork and close. To do it for single file I Get Info, go to the artwork display tab and click delete. you can use vlookup() (or any of the lookup family of functions) to locate an item based on a key value:

I know this look complicated. so I'll break it up into smalled pieces:
first the "&" is called the concatenate operator and joins two strings. like this:
a string is a set of characters between double quotes.
so "string 1" & "string 2" becomes "string 1string2" or "Sam " & "Jones" becomes "Sam Jones"
you can use cell references instead of strings directly in which case the concatenation is performed on the contents of the cells.
so if cell A1 contains "Hi " and the cell A2 contains "There" then A1 & A2 will result in "Hi There"
so you could add the formula
A3=A1 & A2
this is short hand for select cell A3 then type everything including the A3 so that A3 contains "=A1 & A2" (omit the double quote)
OK. So the formula I provided concatenates several items together:
it concatenates A2, then the string " is " then a formula, then the string " years old and likes the color " then a formula
the two formulas (highlighted in blue) perform a lookup of the value in cell A2 in columns A thru D of the table named "Data". If if finds the value in cell A2 in the first column of the lookup range in the table Data (column A) then it returns the value from the same row but in the second or third column.
all that is in a function calld iserror() to trap the condition where the calue you enter in A2 does not exist in the table Data:

JVM Crash When Using JNI and COM
I'm trying to call a DLL compiled from VB6 source code that I do not have access to. The VB6 code simply retrieves data from a DB2 database using ADO and my client code grabs that data and marshals it to my Java code. I'm attempting to achieve this using JNI and COM (without a third-party bridge). It works 75% of the time, but the other 25% of the time, the JVM crashes with the usual Hotspot crash log containing an access violation exception. However, I don't know what in my C++ code (VC++ 8) could be causing this except for passing a "wild" pointer to the code lying underneath the COM object interface. If that is the case, I don't know how I am doing that.
The Java code that is calling my native method is running on Tomcat 5.5.25 and just to be safe, I am not allowing multiple threads to concurrently call the method in my JNI DLL (though I realize that this will kill performance). Once I can get past this problem, I'll do the COM interfacing on a worker thread in my native code so I don't screw up CoInitialize and CoUninitialize calls in the case the same thread is concurrently executing multiple calls to my native code.
I've noticed that in most cases, the JVM crashes during my call to the pClsAccount->OpenConnection method. However, my DLL isn't what is listed on the top of the call stack, which is why I suspect the passing of a wild pointer, though I'm just taking a guess at that. Does anyone have an idea as to what's going on ?

I am using Logic Pro 9 with two MXL 990 microphones in my piano and a Rode NT1A for vocals. I have tried recording with added reverb and keeping getting not a natural reverb sound, but a rather "pixilated" one that does not sound natural. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue? I have tried using Silververb and Space Designer, and both result in the same problems. Thank you!
This is asking for the impossible! It does not sound natural because maybe it isn't and in judging so whats your reference anyway. If you are in dire need of some natural sounding room you can go and record it yourself. But even then, the chances that it sounds like you imagined it, are very slim.
There are very decent sounding reverberation plugins, based on artificial reverb generators or convolution-style, the last one is said to sound more 'natural' then the first one. Be it as it maybe, it really is like cooking food. You got all the ingredients for this delicious taste at hand and believe it or not to reach a satisfying result this is not enough, because if you do not mix the ingredients in the right proportion you will end up with a different dish you thought you'll get. This is exactly the same when one would mix audio, I dare say.
So treat yourself to some good ingredients and the rest is up to you, namely: taste and experience!
And looking at some of my past music productions I always find the same plugins for the 'ambient' task:
Altiverb by Audio Ease when I have acoustic ensembles (classical music mostly), the Sony Oxford Reverb in studio productions, Bricasti when I have to deal with drums and MMultiBandReverb from MeldaProduction for all-round stuff. Thats the base I start from, after that I can end up with dozen Reverb plugins which basically all are doing the same thing but just in a tiny different way.
