Branching / Scenarios

Good morning! I'm relatively new to Captivate, but I'm trying
to create a branch and can't find a clean how-to...
Similar to a thread on this forum back in August, I'm trying
to create a demo wherein there are multiple viable paths, and
therefore on each slide (i'm using question slides- I do not want
to use buttons to create the branch) there is a best choice, an
acceptible choice, and a bad choice. I understand the 'choose your
own adventure' analogy, but my branch paths are red, green or
black- in the tutorial, they're blue... I know that means
something, though admittedly I don't know what it means, or if it's
important!
So far, I've gotten to the Advanced options, and I can direct
each answer to a particular slide, I guess my biggest
question/issue lies with the branch view not being consistent with
the tutorial. I get red/green lines, the tutorial shows blue lines.
I also get one linear representation with lines directing to
different slide while the tutorial shows more of a 'tree' view,
where there are multiple slides on any vertical axis... How do I
get my branching view to approximate the one in the tutorial, and
does it matter?
thanks in advance!!

Honestly, I opted for question slides because I used the
scenario wizard to self-learn how to do branching. That being said,
maybe another question I should ask is what differentiates a
question slide from a 'normal' slide? Which would be appropriate
for the following scenario?
Right now, I'm practicing- so the scenario I'm trying to
create isn't going to have any *real biz application, but beacuse
it seems each situation will vary, here's what I'm trying to
create...
Project: The Date
Your Mission: Ask Her Out, Impress The Girl, Get The Kiss
1st Question: How will you ask her out
A. Call her on the phone (result: she accepts the date; move
directly to Impress the Girl)
B. Slip her a note that says "I think ur pretty. Will U go
out with me? Yes_____ No_____" (result: Yes____ No__x___; move
directly to No Date)
C. Ask your friend to ask her friend to ask her out (result:
your friend is dating her friend; move to Second Chance to Ask Her
Out)
And so forth- if you select option C, and play your cards
right from that point forward, you'll eventually be taken to the
same Impress The Girl slide as if you selected option A directly.
There are other divergent points, but ultimately the goal is to Get
the Kiss, so the end slide will either be No Date, or Smoochy
Smoochy.
If it's possible to score it (like, 10 points for A, 0 points
for B, and 5 points for C), that's be pretty cool, but right now as
a self-teaching application, I'd mostly like to get those branches
right. So what if I take scoring *completely out of the picture- is
it possible to get those branches, and moreover to get the branch
view to be tree-like?

  • How can I Navigate back down a Branching Scenario

    Hello
I've created a series of branching scenarios, but I can't figure out how to create a back
button to allow people to go back up the branch they followed.
I know you can use the "Go to the slide last visited" option, but that only works for once level of branching. If you use the same button command on the previous slide it won't take you back up the branch, it will go forward to the slide you were just on.
So I'm guessing I'm need to broaden my knowledge of variables and advanced actions.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

The way this sort of thing is handled in other software applications (not elearning applications) is to build arrays that record the user's path and then step back through them.
Captivate's Advanced Actions do not provide any way to build arrays, only standalone variables.
Why do your users need to retrace their steps through the branching?  What is the objective?

    using Captivate 7.0 .

  • Which variables for branching scenario assessment based on advanced actions:

I want to be able to use branching on fuzzy questions that don't have a clear correct answer, but have some answers that are better than others (to be more authentic). Has anyone had success with using the variables in advanced actions to provide a branching scenario assessment?
What I want to do is use one multichoice question with partial scoring, each of the 4 possible answers has a different points values (best choice to worst), the value adds to the quiz total score for assessment /feedback purposes, but the next slide is determined by the points gained in that quiz slide (e.g. if they gained 10 points for picking the best answer the condition is set to variable =10 then jump to slide x).
I have tried several cpquizinfo variables but the outcome does not reliably take me to the right slide. I have a feeling quiz questions earlier in the project are affecting the variable.
    Thoughts???

You do not explain what you tried. For such a scenario I would create a
custom question slide to get the control you want. I doubt it is possible
    with default MCQ.

  • Branched scenario with passing score required will not report in LMS (Connect)

I have a couple scenario modules as a part of a large curriculum assembled in Connect. The problem is that some of the Captivate files won't report correctly in Connect.  I've tried multiple things to troubleshoot.  All projects upload to the server successfully.  The only thing that the projects that won't report correctly have in common is that they all use the advanced answer option and were developed in 5.5 and were moved to 6.0 when the changover happened.  Other files in the curriculum that were developed in 5.5 have had no issue with the upgrade. I assume the problem is a new setting that 6.0 now has that wasn't available in 5.5 but can't figure out what it is.
Some modules use advanced answers with the action of "continue" and "show feedback message" checked.
Some modules use advanced answers to branch by using "jump to slide" where they see a whole feedback slide (no feedback message selected).  Then, the feedback slide has a button on it that will report the score desired for that answer (the best way I could figure out how to make it do what I wanted it to do in 5.5).
...Either way when the module uses advanced answers the project will not report correctly.
I have a passing score required on these modules.  When going through the project, the whole thing works great.  The quiz review slide at the end will tell you that you got 13/13 or whatever the final score is.  The projects are set to close upon clicking the continue button on the last slide.  Upon close, you're brought back to Connect and the curriculum page will say that you had 1/Unlimited attempts and score is N/A.
Why won't the score report? I'm very confused by this.  Any help/suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

    Additional information;
The Micro-cell never is handed a DHCP IP address by the RV320, so it seems the Micro-cell cannot continue with its boot-up - only gets to power light and intermittent blinking internet / network light. Conversely, when Micro-cell is connected to one of other routers listed in this post it receives a DHCP lease within a minute and continues to successfully boot-up and connect to AT&T service, therefore all its status lights go solid green.

  • Branching and lesson completion

    Hi Advanced Users,
My clients want very much to know that the students are going through each slide when the complete a lesson.  However, in the lesson, some content is presented as both "demo" -- watch how it is done or "try it yourself" where the interactions are added and the user must complete the actions.  We have a branching scenario set up so they could do one or the other or both.  However, in the TOC, they do not get credit for passing the lesson unless they do both.  Is there anyway that we can set up these slide groups "demo" and "try" as optional so that they get credit for doing one or the other?  We currently have 3 buttons on the page "Demo", "Try it yourself" or "Continue"
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,  Shawn

If you are NOT using Cp6 for this particular course (Cp4,5, or 5.5) then you could use the TickTOC widget to force completion status for both branches when the user gets to the single slide at the end of either branch.
Basically you just place the widget on the slide where both branches merge and enter the slide numbers of all slides on both branches into the widget's dialog.  Then regardless of which branch the user takes, they will get completion for the one the did not take as well.  The TOC will mark all unvisited slides in the branches as completed, and your user will get 100% completion scored.
If you want to test this out, you can download a trial version of TickTOC widget here:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-widgets/download-free-trial-widgets
More info on how this widget works can be found here:
    http://www.infosemantics.com.au/adobe-captivate-widgets/ticktoc
Unfortunately, Captivate 6 users cannot yet use this widget because Adobe made a key change to the way the TOC works in the new version which effectively renders the TickTOC widget useless because it is unable to force the status of slide completion.  We are still waiting on Adobe to get back to us with a fix for this issue.  Hopefully they will restore the capability in a future update to Cp6 and then we can update TickTOC to work with it again.

  • How can I combine advanced actions with the branching view?

I am creating a branching scenario in Captivate 7. It's fairly involved and I'd like to keep track of it with the branching view. But, I understand that if I use an Advanced Action, it won't show up in the view. My slides track a conversation that goes down different routes based on the selected answers. I give the user 3 smart shapes that I'm using as a button. When they press the button, I want to change two variables and then jump to another slide. If I put this all into one advanced action, I have to write an advanced action for each button and it won't show the branches.
Is there a way to execute an action that will change my variables. Then, have it jump to a slide. I've been trying to give the user 1 attempt, execute my advanced action that will change the variables, and then have the Last Attempt jump to a slide, but that doesn't seem to work.
    Any other ideas?

I just upgraded to version 8, hoping for a solution.
I know that I can write an Advanced Action for every slide like this:
It changes my variables and then advances to the right slide. But, I'll have 100+ slides when I'm done and I was hoping that could make this a little easier. AND, I can't track it on the branching view.
I was hoping that I could make this work:
I could use an Advanced Action to change my variables (I would only need a few) and then have it jump to a slide. This would show up in the Branching view. But, I can't get that work.
    Are there any other options?

  • Complex branching quiz help

I have a request to do a quiz where the incorrect responses
provide specific, different feedback. From what I've seen in
Captivate quizzes I can do a retry, but cannot connect the 1st and
2nd incorrect feedback to a specific choice. ex: choose B get
feedback 1, choose C get feedback 2. As an alternative, I can go
the way of creating branching scenario with slides that provide the
specific feedback, but I cannot figure out how to get the scoring
to work where they only get credit if the correct answer is
selected as a first choice - AND how do I get a results page that
shows the final grading which pops in automatically with Quiz,
Question slides. is this just too complex for Captivate? ARGH!
    Using version 3.
I now this is a lot to ask on a forum, and thanks to all who
know more than me. I appreciate your help.
    Donna

For Multiple Choice questions, you can add feedback that is
specific to the answer chosen (I don't think you can do this with
any other question type). This might get you a good distance into
your solution. Create a multiple choice question and for each
answer you type in, click on the Advanced... button under the Add
and Delete buttons. Check the Advanced Answer Options box at the
top and the Show Feedback Message box at the bottom. This will add
a text field to your slide for each answer you do this with. You
can edit each of those fields with the specific feedback for that
    answer.
I haven't been able to do this in such a way that you are
able to make more than one attempt, though. Once you pick the wrong
answer and get the feedback as to why that answer is wrong, the
next thing you click moves you on to the next slide. We've gotten
around that by making multiple copies of the question slide. Kind
    of a pain.
I don't know the answer to your results page question if
choosing "Show score at end of quiz" in the settings in Preferences
    didn't work.
Sorry I can't be more help than that.

  • Using Correct/Incorrect captions & Branching?

    Hi,
I'm still new to Captivate, and here's what I'm trying to do.
I'm using questions as formative, individual questions in a branching scenario, rather than as graded questions. When a student submits an incorrect response, I want to say, "Actually, the correct answer is X." Or, "That's correct." And include some "Feedback on the page." Fine; I know how to do that.
And, I want it to branch. So, after seeing the appropriate caption, clicking still takes the user to page B if their answer was incorrect, but to page C if their answer was correct.
I can figure out how to do the branching or the captions but not both. The only way I figure to do this at all is to not use captions but just branch based on the student's submission and take student to a Pre-A or Pre-B page that includes all the content from the question slide (except I can't use the "radio buttons"), painstakingly recreated, plus the caption and feedback text. Then the user could Continue to Page A or Page B. That seems like so much more work than should be needed.
    Suggestions so welcome! Thanks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for asking.
    I'm using CP4.
By radio buttons, I mean the choices in the regular multiple-choice question. (I'm not doing anything with image buttons or Flash button widget.)
I'm not sure what your second question quite means. Let's see if this helps. I can work out branching using the Advanced Options for each answer choice, or, in this case, via just if Correct or if Incorrect, as I simply have two paths, one for Correct and one for Incorrect, regardless of which incorrect response a student submits. I've accomplished branching using either of these methods.
What I'm trying to work out is that Captivate seems to allow that a Success caption or a Failure caption appears after the student Submits a response. Great. I want that, so I can indicate if their answer is correct or not. After that, however, I want the student who submitted a correct response to branch to Location A, while the student who submitted an incorrect response to branch to Location B.
Maybe I do need a click box. Do I need two click boxes, one for each case - Success and Failure? Does that mean that I'd need to put the Success caption in one place and the Failure caption in another place, and create a click box for each? (RIght now, I have them appearing in the same place, because they're never both present. It makes more UI sense.) Can I then control it so that a clickbox appears either only IF its respective caption appears?
    Thanks again!

  • A self running lesson and a chapter navigation option in the same file

My client has asked if their lesson can have a branching option at the very beginning that allows the learner to watch the entire lesson without having to click a next button or experience pauses between chapters or modules and a second option to select a TOC type screen where they can choose the specific chapter they wish to watch and then when the chapter is finished, the learner can choose to continue to the next chapter or back to the TOC screen.
I understand that I can create that branching scenario, but in my version, I would be replicating the entire lesson (about 140 slides) to create the two paths, one path with the pause/navigation for the chapters and one without.
Is there a better way to accomplish this style of navigation and keep the file as small as possible?  My Java skills are at a beginner level, so please include specifics if the solution will use Java.
Thanks for your help and ideas.

You can achieve this using variables and Conditional Advanced Actions in Captivate.  But it would not be a job for a Captivate beginner.
You need to use the branching slide to set the value of a variable that indicates the user's choice of whether to watch all content or use the menu slide.  Then you need to use Conditional Advanced Actions triggered by ON SLIDE ENTER events to skip certain slides and play others.  You'll also need to set up the Menu slide and again use variables and Conditional Advanced Actions to return users to it after completing sections.
If you are unfamiliar with these concepts, I recommend you watch the tutorials on this site: http://lilybiri.posterous.com/
Like I said, it's not a task for a beginner.

  • Is there any way to increase the contrast of the slider in the Table of Contents? It becomes very hard to see as you slide down a presentation. This has been asked before, a few years back. Has a solution been provided?

I designed an interactive script using Captivate 7. It works like a branching scenario, and is currently in use by about 350 phone operators, soon to be over 750. Everybody is pretty happy about it, but I am getting complaints - especially form the older people - that the slider in the TOC is very hard to see, and I agree - as you scroll down the TOC entries, the slider becomes lighter and lighter in color. Is there any way to tweak it so that I can increase contrast, or recolor it in a darker tone? I know this was discussed a couple of years ago, but I don't know if the issue was addressed by Adobe, or if anyone has come up with a solution.

  • Pausing slides using master slides and widgets

    Hi,
Is there a better way that what we are doing becuase we ware wasting time and we put this process in pace in CP 5.5 and want to know what we can better in CP7.01
We want to have our slides pause at the middle of each slide
    Currently
    - Our navigation buttons are on the master slide . These are custom static widgets to do forward and back because interactive objects cannot be put on master slides
    - so we add a hidden object on each slide to pause
    We have complicated branching becuase
    - we have glossaries and help
    - branched scenarios
So we really need this to work releiably
    Problems
    - our widget doesn't show on the branched viewer
    - we make mistakes using the variable recording the previous viewed slide
We were worried about using a playbar becuase it
    - allows you to exit assessments
    - allows users to skip our simulations
    regards Paul

Your statement '..because interactive objects cannot be put on master slides' is no longer valid since CP6: there is one type of interactive objects that can be used on master slides (or timed for the rest of the project) which are the shape buttons. I have been talking a lot about them:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/why-i-like-shape-buttons-captivate-6
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/toggle-shape-buttons
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate
And I presented a webinar, info and link can be found here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2012/09/training-lilybiris-favourite-shapes-to-trigger-ad vanced-actions.html
You could easily replace the static widgets by shape buttons, they are a lot easier to 'style' and very flexible.
One example: if you want just to pause each slide, add a pausing shape button (transparent fill and no stroke) to the main master slide. Because there is no timing possible for objects on a master slide, that pause will always occur at the end of the slide, whatever its duration. You cannot time the pause! If you have a shape button with pause timed for the rest of the project, that pausing point will always be at the same absolute time (relative is not possible, thought I'd seen somewhere a question about pausing at half the slide duration but cannot find it in your text).
I (almost) never use a playbar myself. It is only useful for simple linear projects.

  • Tokens / Remembering Selections

I am developing an interactive branching scenario with
Captivate 2.0.0 to help users make decisions about what they need
to do to accomplish some tasks. The user answers some questions and
depending upon their responses, the presentation branches to the
appropriate slides to give them a step-by-step to-do list.
There are places where their choices need to be "remembered":
In other words, if they select option A, then later on, regardless
of subsequent branches, option A remains "remembered" and this
    affects an outcome. For instance:
There is a slide that includes a question "Do you currently
have access to the system?" Below this are three buttons "Yes",
"No", and "Not Sure". If they click "Yes", then access approval
steps are bypassed, since they do not need them. If they click
"No", then a "token" is carried forward that "remembers" that the
user has not applied for access. So down the road, say on slide 40,
a summary appears that dynamically adds the sentence "You will need
to complete and submit the Approval Access Form". This could be
among many other items that display contingent upon earlier
    answers.
Is there any way that Captivate 2.0.0 can do this? I thought
about gathering data like this in a Survey, but then how do you use
those answers to determine branching and contingent display of
    text?
    Thanks.

Sorry, but Captivate doesn't provide any functionality for
    conditional text or conditional branching.
Your only option is to create a decision tree (in Visio or on
paper or whatever works for you) and then create a slide for every
possible contingency. You might be able to reduce the complexity of
the links somewhat by compartmentalizing decision paths into
separate Captivate projects and then linking between them, but it
still must all be done by hand.
Captivate output is based on Flash, so there is a possibility
that a Flash developer could create some standalone animations that
work in the published .SWF file (such as setting a Flash variable
and later reading that variable to present text to the user) but
that would be *very* custom development work.
