Brand new black macbook, not enough battery time!

hello! i got my macbook about a month ago. it will usually go about 3.5 hours on a charge if my screen is at the lowest brightness setting. this morning i turned it on, fully charged, put my screen on fully dark and set garage band to record. i do this a lot (i'm a musician and record all of my private lessons and practice sessions with garage band, and barely ever remember to bring my charger). this morning, however, after 45 minutes of having GB run with the screen on black, i turned the screen back on only to find that the battery said i had only 50 minutes of charge left. before i started recording, i had it on for about 10 minutes, in which time it went from 99% charge to 90% charge.
i have had an issue with the fan seemingly always running, to the point that if i am listening to music i have to put earbuds in to even have a shot at hearing it (granted, it's classical music, so it's quiet to start out with, but still). i read a post about the fan problem, and pretty much as soon as i opened it, my fan quieted down (figures). for instance, right now, i only have safari running. no music playing. and it's on full blast. any help is greatly appreciated for either of these issues. thank you!

Hi robyn_basson: It may be worth checking to see if there is "hung" application. Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. Once it is running, click to show CPU, sort by CPU Activity, and also select show all processes and see if there is an activity or application using a high amount of the CPU. Print jobs seem to be a popular culprit.
Good Luck

It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

It sounds very very much like the battery. You will need to have it replaced. If you put the failing one in yourself you will need to pay as your Warranty is now void.

  • My brand new PB will not charge when in standby or when on

I played with a number of PB's so far and finally have my own but... My brand new PB will not charge when in standby or when on; as soon as I plug the charger into the USB port it detects it and brings the screen up (if in standby) showing the lighting bolt on the battery but it does not charge; the lighting bolt stays but the % charge does not change (or hopefully increase) at all; it will actually decrease (??); the only way I can charge it is when I attach the charger and the PB is powered off… the PB brings the red (or green can't remember) LED on and starts to flash it on off and charges; tried the hard reset with no change; I am running the latest OS release 1.0.8.6067. Has anyone seen this? Is it h/w or f/w? Any Fix?

Here's a final update on this... the units goes back to its maker or the store sometimes tomorrow... Why? First I tried to understand if this was s/w or h/w related or maybe both before calling support which in the end I did; so I did try a different charger, hard resetting the unit, discharging and recharging etc; nothing helped or fixed the charging in standby; the unit continued to charge only after being turned off and then plugged into the charger. Here's what I learned:
    1. Going through the initial setup and OS update it is quite possible for the unit to NOT load the OS image correctly i.e.  it appears that it loaded the OS and displays the OS version as if it loaded properly when in fact it did not and the image loaded is corrupt. I found this out during a live session with support when they were looking at my PC screen while the PB was connected to the PC only to point out that the Desktop Manager was showing a s/w update being available (1.0.8 bundle 6067) while the unit was reporting 1.0.0 bundle 0. Strange, I thought I already had 1.0.8.6067... after accepting the update, which takes a bit to load, I started more testing, charging, discharging, hard reset (i.e. Volume Up + Power) etc with no positive results to report. This also proved that the USB port is working, both data (PC to PB communication alright) and power (PB displays the plug over the battery bar when the power contact work)
    2. The charger I have works and it is the correct one: P/N PSM09A-050RIM; make sure it is not one of the incorrectly rated chargers some received.
    3. In order to reduce the amount of current the unit consumes when on, you have to run the Video Chat app at least once and acknowledge the (c) page; otherwise this remains as a background app that take more CPU cycles on the battery. After doing this I did notice a slight improvement in the sense that PB did charge some instead of discharging. The problem is that it only charged to about 60% and did not move higher no matter how long I waited (yes I did reset just to make sure it is not the s/w acting up and deciding to not update the power bar)
    4. The way the RIM RMA works is like this: they start the process for you to return the unit back for repair which I understand may take 10 days; you may get a unit to use for this time if so desired, it will be charged to your CC; your unit may get repaired if possible; if not possible to repair, your new unit will be replaced with a refurbished unit; once you get some unit back you need to send the “10 day replacement unit” to RIM to get your CC charge cleared. I find that this program is good for when you can not return the unit to the place you purchased it from. Otherwise it is not good as I do not like getting a refurb for something I consider brand new (not to mention that you may get a unit with a few bright or dark pixels)
    5. Throughout this process I looked at three (3) Playbooks: 2 had bright pixels and were returned immediately; this last one does not charge correctly. No win for me!
    6. The battery lasts approx 4 hours with the unit playing a video clip in a loop and WiFi on with a WEB pulled stop watch running as well (had to allow multi tasking in setup/general).
Finally, my theory about this problem is that it is h/w related and that it is caused by the noise the board or the display is making when the unit is either on or in standby; a component not soldered properly (cold joint) or out of spec may be the culprit; for example a resistor in resistor divider monitoring the battery voltage or a decoupling capacitor missing or not soldered...

  • Powerbook pismo with OS 10.4.9 not display battery time

I was very curious why my newly upgraded powerbook pismo (400 MHz, 1 MB, 55 GB drive, firewire, etc) would no longer display "time remaining" when on battery or external voltage.
I was getting very close to ordering another battery (6600 mAH) for $150 but decided to do some research first. Lo & behold on the archives there were 30 entries about the same problem on OS 10.4. So in a nutshell, a powerbook pismo with OS 10.4 will not display battery time remaining no matter how many brand new batteries you mail order.
I'll learn how to use system profiler more often (remaining capacity mAh/amperage = time remaining).

There's nothing at all wrong with preferring APpleWorks and wanting to continue using it. It's a bit unfashionable these days, but there are many people who have discovered how powerful, flexible and easy it is to use and continue to use it despite the development of alternatives!
Of course, it does have the drawback of not being intel native, so performance on intel-based Macs will be relatively poor in comparison to iWork, but if that doesn't cause you any problems in use, then it's purely a matter of what you want to use not what anyone else thinks is appropriate!
That said, what exactly is the problem? Can you scroll by clicking the scroll arrows and dragging the scroll bar, but not by using the mouse wheel?

  • Quick review of my wife's new Black MacBook

OK - so SWMBO chose Black last night at the Apple Store. Store upgraded the stock 512MB (2x 256MB sticks) with 2x 512MB sticks and ran memory test to ensure all was AOK - it was.
This MacBook replaced her 14" iBook G3 700MHz with 30gig HD, DVD-ROM/CD-RW and 640MB memory running Mac OS X 10.4.6 with all latest Apple updates.
First impressions during use and transferring wife's files from her old iBook.
    1. Startup was flawless and connected FW400 cable between MacBook and iBook and restarted iBook in Target mode and selected to have all of wife's home files transferred along with other network settings etc. Transfer completed without problems.
    2. As soon as startup completed I Restarted (re-booted) and selected Software update. Geeeesh - there was a lot of stuff that Apple hadn't installed on this stock machine. Downloaded and installed all this stuff without problems.
    3. Now I ran Monolingual to remove all languages except English. This freed up some 3.2 GB of HD space. This took around 30 mins and placed a great deal of stress on the CPUs and HD. CPU activity was well above 80% (using Top.app) and Monolingual chewed up lots of physical RAM and started eventually to cause pageouts on the 1gig of physical RAM. The top left quadrant of the MacBook got very hot. The lower surface of the quadrant was extremely hot and would be bothersome had it been on my lap. The cooling fan could be heard during most of the time Monolingual was running. I believe the Monolingual also removed a large number of language files - as many as 287,000 as before running it I recall seeing 437,000 files and now only have 154,000 files (can't be absolutely sure about these numbers as I did not log them at the time). However, if this is true then not only do you get some 3.2 gig of HD space back a huge reduction in file count which helps with SpotLight indexing and anything else that has to scan the file system structure.
    4. Ran SuperDuper to backup the HD to and external FW400 LaCie 60gig pocket HD. Took about 30 mins. The first run at this caused SuperDuper to complain it could correct the internal HD's permissions. So I quit SuperDuper and launched Disk Utility and ran Repair permissions. This completed with errors and then launched SuperDuper a second time and it did not have problems with the HD permissions. I observed that SuperDuper (not a universal binary) ran far quicker on the MacBook than it did on the iBook - I would say around 2x faster. After SuperDuper cloned the MacBook's HD I then verified I could boot up from the external FW400 LaCie drive. This worked flawlessly.
    5. QT Pro didn't come across from wife's iBook so had to reset the QuickTime Pro registration key.
    6. The MacBook screen real estate is less than the 14" iBook. It really is the height of the MacBook's screen that causes this. The MacBook's screen is same width as the iBook but is about 1.5" less in height. Overall the MacBook feels, looks and is smaller than the 14" iBook. The MacBook's screen display is clearer and brighter than the iBook's. The MacBook's screen display is very vibrant and more colorful than the iBook for sure.
    7. Opening the MacBook screen/lid takes a bit of getting used to compared to the method needed for the iBook.
    8. Keys are flush with the MacBook's outer surface which means they do not contact the screen when screen closed. The iBook's keys aren't and stick up some and can over time mark the screen with finger tip grease etc.
    9. MacBook's trackpad is larger than the iBook's and very welcomed - as is the two-finger scrolling feature.
    10. Adding a pic for accounts was fun as the iSight feature is by default used to capture a mug shot of yourself if you so desire.
    11. Performance of MacBook compared to iBook 14" 700MHz is not very noticeable IMO when doing Safari and Mail type activities. Things do happen with more snappyness though. Yes - SuperDuper ran 2x faster but normal use of MacBook so far doesn't tell me it's 2x2000MHz/700MHz or some 5.7x faster wrt CPU clock rates. I'm sure the MacBook is faster at doing CPU intensive things but have not done any scientific performance testing to post results. I get the feeling that this MacBook is maybe 2x to 3x faster and more snappier than the iBook. The Disk Inventory X utility screams on this MacBook.
    12. MacBook is lighter, thinner and more easily handled than the 14" iBook. It will also fit into the iBook 14" Bootq bag I bought for wife last Christmas.
    13. My wife likes the MacBook very much after a morning of use. She maintains the Black MacBook is cool looking and more professional looking than the White and pleased she chose the Black.
    14. We are both very pleased with the Black MacBook purchase at this time.
The 14" iBook is now to be handed down to daughter #1 as a birthday+Xmas present.

Update to my item 4 as there were some typo errors in it (sorry about that).
    4. Ran SuperDuper to backup the HD to and external FW400 LaCie 60gig pocket HD. Took about 30 mins. The first run at this caused SuperDuper to complain it could not correct the internal HD's permissions. So I quit SuperDuper and launched Disk Utility and ran Repair permissions. This completed without errors and then launched SuperDuper a second time and it did not have problems with the HD permissions. I observed that SuperDuper (it's a universal binary) ran far quicker on the MacBook than it did on the iBook - I would say around 2x faster. After SuperDuper cloned the MacBook's HD I then verified I could boot up from the external FW400 LaCie drive. This worked flawlessly.

On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running on?
What are you (manually) or the project (automatically) setting as the project preset?
(See Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size,
and Pixel Aspect Ratio (even if fields look grayed out).
What are the properties of these source media, including file extension? The brand/model/settings of the camera that recorded the
video may give us this information.
When the source media hit the Timeline for the first time, is there an orange line over their content? Or is there
no colored line and an orange line appears over them only after you have edited them?
Please elaborate on "poof" after rendering the Timeline content by pressing the Render button above the Timeline content with the orange line over it.

  • Brand new i5 Macbook Pro making "clunking" sounds with any sort of movement

I bought a brand new 15" Macbook Pro with a core i5 processor a few months ago. While it is the first Mac I have owned after a lifetime of owning and building PC's, I love it to death.
Anyways, anytime there is any sort of movement, say, if I'm moving from my desk to the couch and I pick the laptop up, it makes a clunking noise which to me sounds exactly like a failing hard drive. The difference is that it only clunks once or twice during the movement, and then stops once I stop moving the laptop. This happens even if I move the laptop very carefully.
My girlfriend has had her 13" macbook for years, and it does not do this.
It doesn't seem to affect my performance (yet), but i'm wondering, is this normal? Is this maybe the warning sign of a hard drive that could be failing prematurely?

it is the sudden motion sensor and what you hear is correct it comes from your drive . when the accelorometer detects certain G's it shuts the drive which makes the drive head park suddenly and the " clunk " you hear is the drive head parking . while it's perfectly ok ( you can not hurt your drive by parking it ) it might get boring after a while if you move it around too much .. you can go ahead and disable your sudden motion sensor at the cost of risking damage when your machine absorbs some proper shock . your choice .. if you google disable sms in google you will get the code to do it if you ever wish to do so
mine is disabled for good but then I am using an SSD

  • Not enough battery...

I have had my iPod nano for a few months. About a week ago I used it until the battery drained and the iPod said 'not enough battery to operate'. I charged it overnight, and when I went to use it in the morning it would not turn on. I have tried to charge it several times, with different chargers and computers but I cant get it to turn on. I have tried to reset it, with no luck. I don't know what to do.

    hey
i had a similar problem and there was nothing i could do
so i requested it to be repaired
i did this a week ago im following it through reepair status
today it currently says its coming back so im expecting it tomorrow or the day after
if you can't manage to do anything you will have to do this. good luck.

  • TS1702 My brand new iphone5 will not connect to my home wifi even though my ipad and old iphone do connect with no problem. What can I do?

My brand new iphone5 will not connect to my home wifi even though it recognizes it. My ipad and my old iphone4s connect with no problem. Any thoughts?

Although your other devices connect okay, it would be worth resetting your router by switching if off for disconnecting it from mains power for 2 minutes and then switch it on again.
Good luck and do report back.

  • How I copied all my Outlook Express data to my new Black MacBook

    Hi there!
I just made the jump to the "Apple side" buying a shiny new Black Macbook, and having already got a lot of usefull information from this forum, I just wanted to give my little contribution...
Here follows how I managed to copy ALL my Microsoft Outlook Express messages, settings and accounts from my "old" PC to my new MacBook:
I just installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my PC and let the automated "import" function transfer all my data from Outlook Express; then I installed Thunderbird to the MacBook too (skipping all the setup procedures that start at the first run of the program).
Then, on the "PC side", I located the folder where all the Thunderbird profile data is stored: it is something like "xxxxxxxx.default" (in my case "voakmfhs.default") and is stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles"
So it was just a matter of copying all the "xxxxxxxx.default" folder from the PC to the Mac (on the "Mac side" just search for the "Thunderbird" folder and then open the "Profiles" subfolder where you have to copy all the stuff)
The last step is to edit the Thunderbird "profiles.ini" file on the Mac, replacing the name of default folder that was assigned during the installation (which you can safely delete), with the name of the one copied from the PC...
For any further question, feel free to ask
Hope this is of some help!
    Ciao for now
    Sergio

  • My brand-new iPod touch (5th Gen) battery takes a very long time to fully charge, even while not in use. Why is this and what should I do?

Just recently bought a brand-new iPod touch, 5th generation. To be exact, got it two days ago, this past Saturday, on 12/13/2014. Initially, when I first turned it on, it had a fully charge and I didn't need to charge it. I also didn't see anything in the very small and limited start-up guide you receive with it to charge it for a certain amount of time before use, or to use it until the battery dies, then charge all the way, like a lot of electronic devices have you do when you first purchase them.
So I was assuming I didn't need to do anything like that. First question, should I have charged it for a period of time before use? Should I have used it until the battery died, then plugged it in and charged it fully before use? Or is none of this necessary initially and iPod batteries are good to go from the start?
Please excuse me if this is an obvious question, as this is my first ever iPod. Anyways, like I said, nothing in the "instructions" said anything about that, so I didn't do it, I just used it until it got below 20% battery left, then I plugged it in.
Now for the battery itself, it takes literally a day or so to fully charge, even while not in use. Even if I use it for a while, turn off the iPod to make sure it shuts off all background data and apps, and then plug it in to charge, it still charges extremely slowly. I've never seen a device take this long to charge. As for the battery life itself, I'd say at full charge it lasts about 4-5 hrs, maybe 6, and then I have to charge it again. Meanwhile it takes around 24 hours, without me using it, to fully charge. If I use it while its charging, the battery decreases faster than it charges, and eventually I'll get the typical "20% battery remaining" message pop up.
I know it is charging, as the lightning symbol is next to the battery symbol. Specifically, right now, I plugged it in about 1 hr 30 minutes ago, and it has barely gone up. Also, whenever I press the home button to check the battery, I can see it jump down from about 50% to somewhere around 25%-30%. What is that about?
This is really frustrating, and I'm seriously contemplating either taking it back and trying my luck with a different iPod, or just taking it back and getting my money back. Any help and clarification on this matter would be greatly appreciated, and I'll answer any questions I can to shed more light on this.

It will take longer to charge the 5G's battery than either the 3G or 4G's battery.

  • Brand New 2011 Macbook pro Not Charging while Plugged in

I purhcased a brand new 2011 17" macbook pro. The macbook will charge up to 100% while nothing is plugged in. When i start running applications it will switch to "Not charging" on the toolbar. This is while its plugged in.
This has happned when i have just 2 apps open.
I DJ a nightclub and sometimes have 4 apps open, which is not a lot and this doenst  happen with my 2009 17" macbook pro.
I have done the SMC reset and this still happens.
I have read all the fourms and googled it and see im not alone.
From what i can see, and makes sense is, the new Quad-Core processors use more power, and with just the macbook running, even openign up 2 apps, its using about 95W of power. With the powersupply only 85W, it makes sense how it can switch to not charging.
From what i have seen, it will actually go down to about 3% of charge and stay there. It will say Not chargeing for a while, then go away like its charging, then switch back to not charging. It basicllys charges it enough to keep it around 3%.
now if i turn off all apps, it will charge back up, but that is hard to do in the middle of DJ'n the nightclub.
I know my best friend has this same issue on his 2011 macbook pro, he bought online from Apple, and i got mine from an Apple store about 4 months later, so i know its not the same batch.
I just want to know if anyone else is seeing this on the 2011 quad-core laptops and does anyone know if Apple is aware of this and are there plans on updating the powersupply to provide more power. Maybe 85W is not enough to charge it.
I have not opened a ticket with Apple yet but i will.
I just wanted to post this up to see if anyone is seeing this same thing.
    Thanks

Hello, I have had very similar problems but with the MBP not even registering that a charger is plugged in (no light coming on and no change to the battery symbol).
I had a mid 2010 model that was sent in 4 times to be fixed, with no change, followed by the unit being replaced altogether with the latest 2011 model, only to find the issue persists (the charger was replaced early on as well).
The only retaining factor is the Lion software which forums have highlighted has effected charging when individuals have upgraded.
It is appalling that a company like Apple have not taken steps to address these issues and will go as far as to replace all components TWICE in one Laptop, as well as give out a new Laptop, without tackling the real problem.
    Appalled and ultimately very disappointed.

  • I have just taken delivery of a brand new 15" macbook pro, tried migration assistant from a time machine backup, music, photos, programs etc. They now take up 350gb of my hard drive but the files are nowhere to be found? can anyone help?

Set migration assistant to run whilst on a lunch break, given that it needed 2 hours or so, when i returned all programs and applications had moved across from my time machine backup of a now dead 15"macbook pro 2009 edition running snow leopard...When i look at my new system information it shows my new 500gb drive is full of music, movies and photos and has only 168gb free, not enough to run a new migration and i don't have any boot disks for Lion so really don't want to erase the hard drive. To compound the problem i'm in Vietnam where there isn't a genius bar just around the corner, or even an aasp within 700km - what should I do?

Is the HDD in the 2009 15" MBP dead?  (The original source of your data)  If not, you might want ot take it out and put it in an enclosure.
You might try spotlight on know files to see if that gives you any clues where your data is located.
You might down load from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It should show you all of the files you have on your MBP and enable to locate them.
    Ciao.
