Hi Guys,
I am keen to land a job in Java Programming and would appreciate any advice...
I have a good Physics Degree rather than a computing one but I am currently studying for a HND in Software Development and the SCJP exam. What do people feel is more important to have the HND or the SCJP?
Also it can be tough to break into the market without experience - the old catch 22 situation. How did those of you that work in programming get your first job ? And what level were you at - i.e. could you already write programs or did you learn to program on the job?
Your feedback and experience would be welcome.

The catch 22 is always there in the job market, regardless of the field. The trick is to find a way in using what or who you know. For me it was a co-op program at the university I attended many years ago. And I know several people where I currently work that broke in using the same technique quite recently. And don't turn down opportunities to work in related fields, eg. a financial industry job will provide you with a lot of domain knowledge that can come in handy later.

Cannot get into the market on android

I had to reset my android to the factory settings since I was having problems with the phone. Now I am trying to get some of my applications back but when I go into the market it asks me to sign into my google account. I sign in but I get an error message saying an unexpected error occurred and to force close it or wait. When I click on wait it just keeps giving me the same error message. Are you trying to access the play store from your phone? I am not sure what could be causing your issue, but if at all a possibility you might want to try and access the play store from a computer and once you log in you will be able to get your apps downloaded on your new phone.

Ksld not breaking into source file

Hi guys,
I installed ksld and started debugging my driver using a tip connection... all works fine.. i inserted a breakpoint on one of my functions in the driver.. and in the tip console once i have reached the breakpoint.. i use ::remote to enter remote mode and start the ksld with all those options on the host and it get connected to the ksld agent.. but the host is not able to show the source code of my driver... ie it always breaks into the asm dump of the driver code.. how do i switch to source display.. but at the same time i am able to edit the source file and all.. ie by using edit command.. but no idea why the asm code is dumped while a break point is reached..
any idea how we can switch to source level code for debugging..

The simple answer here is that machine specific files do not need to be checked in. This includes .PSS and .CPD files. The .HHP and .XPJ files are not machine specific, they are project specific and therefore must be checked in. The confusion over the HHP file may come down to whether CHM output is being produced. If you are not, you could safely say that this file need not be source controlled. However it doesn't cost anything to include it under source control so why make life more difficult by excluding it.

How can the eclipse debugger break in the code when an exception is thrown

Is there a way in eclipse to break into the bebugger when an exception is thrown in debug mode like Visual Studio 2003 or 2005?

For 3.x, select "Add Java Exception Breakpoint" from the "Run" menu.
Check "Caught" to break even if your code handles the exception, "Uncaught" to break when your code doesn't handle the exception.

Can host hacker break into guest that uses full disk encryption?

I know it is unlikely but let us say host has got owned, ie a hacker has managed to break into the host.
How would they go about breaking into a linux VM that uses full disk encryption?
They can't mess with the .vmdk without damaging it - it is encrypted by the guest.
They can't use vmrun because they do not know the guest passwords.
They can't attach to processes in the guest with debugging tools because they cannot see individual guest processes.
What can they do? And crucially, what can I do as a countermeasure?

What really matters is WHERE you do the encryption. If the encryption is too low, data in the guest appears unencrypted. If it is in the guest, then the keys live in the guest and since SGX is not around at the moment, keys are somewhere in guest memory even for a little bit of time.
So the real question is what are you trying to achieve?
If you are trying to meet encryption at rest requirements then it makes no difference where you encrypt as the data on the disk will be encrypted and without the key no one can decrypt it. Now if you have keys generated within a VM without using DRNGD or some other high quatlity randomness source, then your keys could be predictable and you need to guard against making it easy for a brute force attack.
If you need to encrypt data in motion?
Then you need to consider how the VM is protected itself, how an application interacts with data to determine during 'motion' if someone should not be accessing the data even though they are already supposedly allowed to do so. Keys are in memory, so therefore you need to guard memory access for those keys to only the application in question. This is the hard part, and requires you to think seriously about logging, key management, etc.
So really what are you trying to achieve?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive? The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import. Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive? The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import. Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either. It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected. VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB. All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC. Is that the same? Thank you for your time and response.

"Save as PDF" breaks up the document into multiple PDFs

Ever since my Lion install, when I open a doc in MSWord and try to "Save as PDF", it breaks up the document into multiple PDFs, not one saved PDF. Haven't seen this problem before. Anyone else experiencing this new "feature"?

What version of Word? It's working fine with my Word 2011 on Lion. (version 14.1.2. Applied SP1 and the .2 update.)
A workaround would be to print, then select the PDF dropdown in the lower corner of the print window.
Otherwise, you'll probably want to ask in the Microsoft forums, as Save As is using Word's programming code, not OSX's code like it does with the print function.

Setting to break up the html code into small piecces?

i was told that there is a dreamweaver setting or command where you can make your html generate break up the code into smaller pieces but i dont know how that can happen. anyone to help me? i appreciate it

no what I am saying is that an email campaign IS an HTML page.
add your html, choose your recipients, press send - it shouldn't be any harder than that.
and if the program you are using will not allow you to add anymore than 300characters then it is rubbish and I would not use it.
in anycase there should be no need to "break up" an HTML email into 300char blocks. And as far as I know, I cannot see any point as to why DW would include that, not to mention the fact that you cannot get much out in 300chars

Breaking up the weblogs into different categories

It will be really nice to break up the weblogs into different categories based on technical areas(kind of like forum but not that many categories). There could be one category where all the general discussion weblog could be posted. I think this will generate more traffic towards weblogs. Right now lot of the technical weblogs are getting lost among the general content. Just a suggestion. Love to hear back from SDN members.

I have Downloaded albums that break up into each and every song or artist and I cannot get them to combine into the one album that they actually are. How can I do that?

In My itunes library some of the albums I have downloaded to my computer are being separated into each song or broken up into groups of separate artists on the album. I cannot figure out how to combine them all back into the one album they actually are from so when I open the library under Albums the album in question is just one album and not 10 or 15 albums because of this fracturing. I can make them into one album by making a playlist but that does not take care of the Album list page. Any ideas?

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix split albums.
For compilations of tracks by different artists set the album artist to Various Artists and also tick Album is a compilation of songs by various artists if using the new version of Get info or set Part of a compilation to Yes on the Options tab if using the old dialog box (which you can invoke by holding down shift as you right-click > Get Info).

How to continue into the future?

I'm starting to get worried.
After the fiasko with the Lion servers i bought, I'm facing a new dilemma.
I had bought the machines expecting something a bit more evolved that 10.6 server.
But we all know how that turned out.

I had then planned to replace my os x mail server with Exchange.
And why is that?
My mailserver seems to be damaging email addresses by adding questionmarks to them.
I have tried asking here and in other places about this without results.
I then started looking around on this website and others.
Only to realize that questions that go above a degree of complexity seem to remain unanswered.
Questions that some years ago were still receiving replies.
I then read the complains from other people and see that I'm not alone.

So I start looking into what is involved.
And stumble on the fact that using 10.7 client with Exchange seems to be working but that things will break once I upgrade to 10.8 client.
Ok so I consider to stick with 10.7 but then again I will be needing to buy new machines soon and those will contain 10.8.
Also I could switch to use the command line to administer the servers in order to set up my virtual domains etc.
But that isn't an option for someone that just occasionally needs to work on this.
Is Apple Marketing telling me that Apple products are only to be used in the home?
And that using them in a business environment is not an option anymore?
So what is the solution here?
Perhaps the host that display's such brilliance in editing our postings can answer this question?
Because, after this fiasko with server 10.7 and 10.8 I'm a bit clueless, as to what to tell my clients the next time a new machine needs to be purchased.

Actually I live in Iceland.
And despite the fact that I've been exclusively working with apple products for 25 years or so I would like to stress that over here a Mac only installation in Business is an illusion.
Next to all business software is windows based while the ease of use has for a long time now been associated with the products from apple.
For me this has changed during the last two weeks.
The upgrade to 10.7 server has just waisted more of my time and caused a longer shutdown of services than the combined time of shutdowns associated with our windows server, which we have been running for up to 10 years now.
The removal of open directory is causing me added work which I can probably get rid of by switching entirely to windows based servers.
And once the os x servers are gone there is not much reason to hang on to the macs, at least if the reports about problems in 10.8 in regards to connections to Exchange are true. Also we are running our business software in Terminal services and switching to Windows clients would probably lower our overhead considerably.
All the software we are using runs effortlessly on windows while using Mac's to run it is quite an overhead.
I have nothing against SMBX but delivering it half finished, or what ever, to the market isn't my idea of a positive firm image. And delivering the server application half finished with a windows 3.11 user interface doesn't do anything for me either.

Twenty years ago we could afford to be evangelists and believe that Apple, with an capital "A", was the good guy that was being smothered by the big, bad ms.
We believed in Apple to do whatever humanly possible to give us products that were innovative and cool.
Then came the day's of the Pepsi king. Overpriced, underpowered hardware and the humiliation that followed was next to unbearable.
Then came Steve Jobs and despite him being what and who he was, he grabbed the company by the hair and pulled it out of the ditch. Albeit with the help of many good people.
Then apple discovered consumer products and became the most valuable company being traded. However sometimes value is not only measured by money but rather by the image being displayed.
If apple wants to be all about making money and less about customer satisfaction then so be it.
Then they can just return to being apple with a small "a" like during and after the days of the Pepsi king.

As I said using windows machines would probably mean less overhead and if we want to go the apple way of thinking, for profit that is, switching to windows would probably be a no brainer. Also then I wouldn't have to listen to the snoddy remarks of my learned colleagues from the windows world anymore.
I have yet to meet a windows system manager that doesn't, in one way or other, dread the addition of Macs to his environment.

When i log into all my sites needing a password and username for example Facebook and Gmail then i close the browser with "remember me" selected it logs me out of Gmail and Facebook. Then i have to log back into the those sites again. This does not happen to me in Internet Explorer or Google Chrome.
Firefox seems to save the password and username but logs me out of all my sites that needs a password and username after each session. This never happen to me before an Firefox update.
The only way that i have found to work around this to keep Firefox open.

The "remember me" checkbox instructs the site to set a persistent cookie in Firefox. Persistent means that the cookie is marked with a future expiration date so that Firefox retains it between sessions.
There are a lot of ways to break this. For example:
* Visit the site in a private window
* Change Firefox's default setting of accepting persistent cookies from all servers (first party and third party)
* Set Firefox to clear cookies at shutdown
* Install add-ons that clear cookies
* Use external cleaning/security/privacy software that clears Firefox cookies
If you're not sure about your cookie settings, check out the Privacy panel of the Options dialog:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
If you have "Firefox will: remember history" then cookies are accepted and retained.
If you have "Firefox will: use custom settings for history" you can check your cookie settings below that line.
If you have "Firefox will: never remember history" then you are going to be using full time private browsing and cookies are discarded between sessions.
If cookie settings are okay, and you would like advice on your extensions, it would be helpful if you could post a list of them. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:
* Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the upper left corner, click the Copy text to clipboard button, then paste into a reply.
After previewing, you will see there is some extra information below the list of extensions that you can edit out if you like.
