Bridge in CS5 Mac - newbie trying to keyword my 4000+ photos

I'm an old PC - PS7 user now into Mac and CS5.  I thought I would use Bridge to re-organize and keyword some old photos.  But I am having difficulties.  The keywords I add keep disappearing from the keyword list when I go to a new folder.  I need suggestions for set up.  Must I put everything into one folder to keep my keyword list available so I don't inadventently make variants like 'graffiti' 'street-graffiti" etc.   I see the CS5 help documentation but I can't find the Bridge help/manual.  Can you suggest a book or link for me or a procedure?
Thanks so much.
Diane

Look closely at the keywords in the keyword panel.  If they are italicized they are temporary and will disappear when rebooting and perhaps changing folders.
If they are italicized right click on them and choose "make persistent".
Hope that helps.

  • Bridge CS4 - I still can't move keywords for stock photos

    I'm on a Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, 4G RAM.
I buy a lot of stock photos. The stock photo companies have thoughtfully assigned a bunch of keywords to the photos, sometimes in other languages that I don't really speak. Photos.com is notorious for applying keywords that have nothing to do with the photo, as evidenced my my searches for certain keywords. I wish they'd all stop doing this.
When these photos are opened, their keywords appear under "Other Keywords." I can make the keyword permanent under "Other Keywords," but I am unable to drag the keyword(s) into the main keyword list in an effort to GET RID OF this "Other Keywords" list.
I was hoping this was addressed in Bridge CS4, but of course it wasn't...UNLESS...
someone here knows how to do it?

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • Mac newbie trying to figure out best internal HD configuration

    Greetings,
I've been trying to educate myself about internal hard drives by reading some of the posts here and doing a search about RAID but unfortunately I'm still a little confused. I'll try to post my questions about what I'd like to accomplish and if these have been answered before I'll gladly go read a post if someone can direct me to the right place.
First, I have only one internal hard drive on my MacPro and I'm tired of living dangerously! I need to install another hard drive to use as a backup of my work, digital images, music, etc.
    1. Can someone explain (or link me to an explantion) the differences of RAID and which one i would want for the above scenario?
    2. Given my original aim with the backup disc, can someone recommend a make/model that works well as a backup? (for example i read about differences between an SE and an RE drive from one manufacturer, and how one works better in this or that situation, but it all went right over my head)
    3. Is there a software application I should consider that will help me automate my backup process on a daily (nightly) basis? (I'm more than a little forgetful)
Thanks very much for dealing with the newbie on these issues!
    Enjoy the day,
    Pedro
    MacPro 2x2.66 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't use raid myself so I'll leave that explanation to others. I configure my Mac Pro with 4 drives. My main drive is my boot drive and has about 300+ gigs free. I have a backup drive for that which I use SuperDuper for backup, creating a fully bootable backup drive in the event my main drive has a problem. I only back up to that drive when my machine is "good and solid". That allows me to throw on the most recent update without much concern. If there is a problem then I just boot from my backup drive and I'm back up and running just fine. I also use the backup of my main drive for my Final Cut Pro scratch drive. I copy the files for my movies to external drives for archive when needed. For my data drives I use another set of 500 gig drives. One for data (mostly photos) and one to backup using superduper whenever I feel like it. You could automate it all with Retrospect for the data drives if you wanted to. I don't think Retrospect will make a bootable backup of a main drive. I use Western Digital WD5000KS ddrives, 500 megs each. They make another model for those wanting RAID. Set up RAID, by all means, if squeeking every ounce of speed is your goal to be sure. My setup is conservative, redundant and very safe. A simple search here or on google for RAID0 or such will turn up much info on raid configuations.

  • Mac newbie trying to understand

I haven't learned to think in Mac yet. I'm trying to understand what actually happens to the files that I have imported from my memory card into iphoto and then exported to another folder on my hard drive for use in other applications or on a Windows PC. Are the files moved from the iphoto library and then tracked in iphoto or are they copied to the new folder thus creating two copies on the hard drive? Any of the above?
I am trying to avoid creating duplicates of the originals in order to save space and would like to understand this before I go much further and wind up with a huge mess. I'm thinking maybe I should use image capture to get the photos from the card to a folder and then import into iphoto so the originals would be more readily available for burning cds/dvds for use use in Windows as I will be doing that a lot. How would that work?
That's probably about as clear as mud. Anybody understand and can educate me? By the way, love my iMac.
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
    And welcome to the Mac
while you will find the Mac very intuitive and easy to use it is different from a PC and there is a learning curve - the Apple tutorials are very helpful - see the right hand column for a list by major topic - http://www.apple.com/startpage/
I'm trying to understand what actually happens to the files that I have imported from my memory card into iphoto and then exported to another folder on my hard drive for use in other applications or on a Windows PC. Are the files moved from the iphoto library
By default (and strongly recommended) the imported photos are copied to the iPhoto library -- there is an option not to do this but it can be extremely problematic and unless you are a very experienced user it is strongly recommended that you use the default of copying all imported photos to the iPhoto library
    and then tracked in iphoto
    Yes - by default
or are they copied to the new folder thus creating two copies on the hard drive?
The original is left alone unless you choose to have iPhoto delete the photos form the camera after importing (it is best not to have iPhoto do this but to use the camera to reformat the card once everything is firmly in iPhoto and the camera is properly disconnected. Once you have imported the photos to iPhoto you can delete the original that is outside of iPhoto
This will create two copies of each original and is unnecessary - it is better to export the photos you want to use and delete the exported versions after you use them.

  • Mac Newbie trying to get a handle on photoshop pull downs

I am fairly new to osx and really love the design of photoshop with one exception: layer pull downs.  When I used photoshop on a pc I could select the layer mode and then up or down arrow key to preview how a  layer mode would look.  I could just up arrow or down arrow and see what different looks each layer mode would cause.  On the mac, I find that I  have to click and drag every time.  Is there a way to get the arrow keys to work?  I found that after a days work my arm was actually sore from needing to constantly click and drag.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

if i'm not mistaken, on the mac the drop-downs don't "stick"
They most certainly do, at least on my machine.  I double checked before posting.  The up/down arrows work to move through the blending modes, but you don't get previews as you cycle through them.

Apple most likely has the same poor taste that Microsoft does when it come to defaults.  Microsoft likes to hide things like  settings, preset, folders etc from normal users  think the dumb or something else.  If Apple also hide things you will have to  make some system setting changes that will allow Finder to do it job and find it for you.

Hi, Chris. Thanks for giving this query a look. I have the same problem. All documents print on my HP Deskjet 932C except Photoshop files since I updated to Mavericks.
    My CS5 version is 9.0 x64. Mavericks is 10.9.4.
I checked the HP drivers and HP doesn't have one for OS X newer than 10.4.
I tried printing out the detailed report (very long!) and this page rejected the reply as spam. Can we provide the text as an attachment?

  • Is it now easier to create custom workspaces in Bridge CS4 &CS5

I use CS3 and I swear to god this is the most frustrating and hard to remember procedure after I lose my saved Bridge workspace settings. Once I figure it out, save the settings with a custom name, it's out of site and out of mind, forgotten years afterward.
I spent all morning trying to remember by trial and error how to recreate my modified filmstrip workspace which has one horizontal divider (major PITA to remember how to implement) separating Folder panel from Metadata panel on the left column, Preview pane in center with Content thumbnail strip separated by a horizontal divider underneath and the right column collapsed by the extended Preview pane. Very simple and uncluttered setup.
I didn't want to use Snow Leopard Mac Migration Assistant transferring my Bridge Workspace prefs (which I couldn't find on my OS Tiger hard drive pulled from my dead 2004 G5 iMac) to my newly purchased 2010 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard attached to the dead imac's HD through a firewire enclosure. Just reinstalled CS3 from my licensed CD and downloaded all updates using Adobe's online Update system.
Only one post on how to create Bridge workspace using horizontal dividers came up in a search and it turned out to be wrong.
I finally figured it out by first choosing Horizontal Filmstrip mode which has the left column in a tabbed layout, the center with Preview/Content including a horizontal divider and the right column with a horizontal divider and tabbed windows. Next I removed all tabs on the left except (Folder) and kept one tab on the right column (Metadata panel).
Here's the key that gets missed and forgotten in all this. As I click on the Metadata panel tab and drag from the right column over to the left column there is a blue highlight surrounding the entire column which gets most folks to let go upon which you get the disappointing two tabbed left column with no horizontal divider.
HERE IT IS...WATCH FOR IT...there is a blue one line bar that you can get to appear AT THE TOP of the left column when hovering the dragged tab just above the tab already in place in the column. Most don't see or know about this blue highlight bar showing up like this. And even then INTUITION says the blue horizontal divider highlight bar should appear in the middle of the left column being dragged and dropped to. But since no one sees it or maybe even knows about and how to get it to highlight, it gets forgotten about and the confusion and frustration continues.
I tried to post this in the Bridge Feature Request which now takes me to a Photoshop.com site requiring a new account be made for signing in. After I sign in, go to Bridge section, there's no GUI allowing me to Post New Topic, so I posted here.

2 clicks in Bridge Help, huh? Yeah. I already know how to create a workspace. It's the specifics of creating a horizontal divider that I'm having trouble remembering how to do and what to search for when I forget.
2 clicks didn't get me to the page on how to create horizontal dividers which is what I entered into Bridge Help Search from the beginning before I posted here. It only indicates how to make and move panels by grabbing the tabbed column which I already knew.
Put yourself in the place of someone who has to recall how to do something this deceptively simple and then know what to ask and search for after years of not having to deal with this. Would like you to find in the Bridge Help (search or whatever) where it says blue single line highlight bar lightens up to tell the user that a horizontal divider is being created.
Also see if you find instructions in Bridge Help that say..."Don't confuse this single line highlight bar (which if you have a fast video card will barely stay on long enough to notice or distinguish from the regular blue highlight bounding box when hovering between columns trying to create single square shaped panels with an adjustable divider bar but only getting tabbed unadjustable columns".
Heck, put yourself in the place of a newbie trying to figure this out. I've been doing this digital imaging stuff since '98 starting with Photoshop 4 and I'm having trouble.
Thanks for the directory location for Bridge's workspace. Don't know why doing a search using workspaces didn't find it. I finally hooked up my old G5 imac HD and found it along with the other "!!" workspaces but mine wasn't custom named which I may have altered slightly from when I first created it that originally included my name. I only found Workspace Horizontal Filmstrip Metadata.workspace. Wish there was a way to search where this file is at on the HD, but there's always google for finding that kind of stuff I guess.
Didn't find the "row of workspace names located at the top left of Search entry" in Bridge CS3.
But really this post is a disguised rant/feature request asking Adobe to allow instructions to show up by entering search terms... "Creating a Horizontal Divider In Bridge Workspace" when this situation comes up.
I'm hoping this rant will get indexed by google and show up in a search years later just so I'll remember this.

I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file me be open in another application."Please help I really need to get this file open.

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

  • Mac newbie returns to Windows

I was really looking forward to kicking Windows into touch. No more virus software, no disk defragging required. Simple Tiger operating system. Fast performance. Throw in a Mac Pro and I should have been full of joy.
The reality has been pure frustration. I found I had to dual boot to windows to make so many little jobs I do as routine work on the Mac Pro. Boy is Tiger lacking in so many areas. Mac Mail or Entourage are just so dated and frustrating to use. Office 2004 for Mac - well come on guys, does it really have to be that creaky? Compared to the Windows version, and the latest Office 2007, it is really so limited. Can't compress pictures in a document, for example so have to send larger folders with pictures in as a PDF.
The performance of Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Mac should have been stellar. Nope. Thrashed by CS2 running on my 4-year old IBM Thinkpad laptop; the programme did storm through work in its Windows version on the Mac, but you do not by a Mac to run Windows full time do you?
Much as I want to join your club it will need a few changes. Like simple, affordable personal finiance software that allows easy migration for MS Money. Or an email programme that allows you to list contacts by first or last names. Or a system that allows you to turn off certain toolbars and keep them turned off. Software that allows simple routeplanning to be made. The ability to run RAW picture conversions without locking up. Safari allowing personal data to be stored, so allowing access to multiple on-line bank finance mangement systems from one site. Support for keyboards that help those with RSI. Ditto with track balls. Or even a few more printer drivers; failure to work 2 out of three of my printers, the oldest of which is 2 years, is not encouraging.
I could go on. In fact I did - I spent over 50 hours just trying to make a working system of of a Mac and OS.X Tiger operating system. It just could not be done. I even tried doing it the Mac way for five solid days. It was like going back to an abacus.
All in all I am just so dissappointed. My 2 weeks with an Apple Mac has shown me the grass is not greener on the other side. Windows XP may stink - Vista is too dreadful to even consider - but the Tiger was so tame I won't be coming back.

Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

As another Mac newbie I thought I'd share some of my frustrations with OSX, but also why I won’t be returning to windows anytime soon. I've built PC's for almost 7 years, so I know exactly how much flexibility you have in both building and operating a windows PC. I also know the exact definition of compatibility. Thousands of different manufacturers making parts for PCs is a nightmare, if you don’t believe me build a computer, I dare you. Over my years building computers I have pulled out more hair, lost more files, and nearly broke so many parts I prefer to not talk about it. So finally when it was time to upgrade I thought about a Mac. Problem was I wanted a computer that had some flexibility in terms of upgrading. I was absolutely blown away by the cost of powermacs. I could build a new PC, no exaggeration, for well less than half of what a powermac would cost me. Not to mention a powermac g5 was already a generation old. So I caved and bought a dell for dirt cheap, cheaper than even what I could build a PC for. Not only that I thought maybe vista is a savior so I got my new dell with windows vista. Lets just say my brand new computer (I bought the dell in February) ran drastically slower than the nearly 6 year old computer it was replacing. Not to mention I had to go buy a new wireless card, and most of my software didn’t work. Vista looks pretty, actually it looks just like OSX, but it runs terrible unless you have a top-of-the-line computer. Anyway to make a long story short someone on craig’s list was getting rid of their powermac and they needed a new windows PC so we traded. I also recently bought a powerbook g3 so I’m 100 percent Mac now. I’ve been using OSX for a few weeks now and I’ve read some articles on making the switch. I’ve found how incredibly easy OSX is to use and how intuitive many of the features are. There are a few downsides to using a Mac I certainly understand. One is the lack of software support. I regularly use Reference Manager and SPSS, two programs that are unfortunately not supported in OSX. However I normally use these programs at work, so for now I can go without them at home. I suppose there are two other complaints I have about Apple and Macs. I’ve found that first, Macs don’t like non-Apple parts. Buy a third-party anything and you’re in for a headache. Second, what was common knowledge on a PC means nothing on a Mac. Installing an airport card took me more than a day because I didn’t know what I was doing and my mind was still thinking windows. I’ve been frustrated more than a few times with my new Mac, but the problems have been entirely because of my naïve understanding of Macs and OSX. All in All though I completely understand that Macs aren’t for everyone, especially people who use a lot of professional software. For me though the choice is easy, I want a computer that is easy to use, does basic tasks, and for the love of all things holy doesn’t crash and lose my data. Everything after that I will learn to cope with. For these reasons I am sticking it out and learning the full feature set of OSX.

  • Migrating from Windows (Adobe PE + Bridge(?)) to Mac (iPhoto + Adobe PE)

I have a family member who is thinking about switching from Windows to a Mac. She is currenlty using Adobe stuff on Windows (PE 4) where she edits and organizes her photo's.
I've set her up for trial with one of my Macs with PE 4 installed. Now the question is, will she be using iPhoto or Adobe Bridge on the Mac and what is more important, how can she migrate in either situation?
Personally, I think iPhoto/PE is the best solution, but how should she migrate her Windows photo database to het Mac and might migrating to Adobe bridge not be easier?

    Gerben:
If Photo Bridge can write the metadata, primarily the keywords, to the files then importing the folders that the file are located in will create rolls in iPhoto with the same title as those folder. Also the keywords should be read by iPhoto and included in its database.
As you know iPhoto is a image management application but one with the additional features of slideshows, books, etc. It can group photos by whatever criteria the user want. Bridge is primarily a browser type application.
To migrate her Windows photos to iPhoto she should first copy the folders of image files to the Mac. Then download and run BatChmod on each folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folders into that field. This will assure that the permissions/ownership are properly set before importing into iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
