Bridging Samba connections?

I currently have samba server running on my desktop and my backup/storage computer (both of these computers have archlinux). I currently have a system set up where i can copy stuff from my desktop to laptops and other computers around the house. I was wondering if it was possible to bridge the connections between my desktop and a backup/storage computer. How would i go along doing something like this?

One approach would be to mount shares on your Samba server from the Storage server using NFS or some such method, then exporting the directory you've mounted as a Samba share.
I have no idea if that's a good idea or not, but I'm sure it would at least sort-of work.
Other options include:
sshfs
ftp
afs
iscsi (this would probably work the best, because you mount iscsi devices like local devices)
Why do you want to export the files from your computer and not the strorage server directly?  If it's so you only have to login to one computer to access the shares, you might want to look into setting your desktop as an NT4 style PDC (primary domain controller), but this won't work with the XP,Vista,or 7 home-edtions, only with Win2k (or earlier, through hackery) or professional editions of Windows.
Setting up a PDC and then joining the domain should allow your users to sign on once and then access all shared resources.
See the Samba page docs for extensive documentation related to this subject.

  • Samba connection lost, RESTART required - is there a gentler way?

I leave my Mac overnight at work at lot while it's running some remote jobs and also connected to a linux box via the corporate Samba network. Every time I come back to my Mac the following morning the Samba connection is lost and I can't save off the results. Presumably this is because of some period of inactivity - all day long while I'm using the Mac the Samba connection is robust. I've tried quitting the Finder, unplugging and replugging the ethernet connector, logging out and logging back in again, creating a new location with no network capabilities and going there and then back to my current location again. The only thing that allows me to reconnect to Samba is a full restart. Is there some Terminal command that I can enter to kick Samba in the pants so I can then do a fresh Connect to Server without restarting (and losing most of the work accomplished overnight)?

I have a similar issue when networking to a Windows box.
    Try this:
In Sharing, turn off SMB, click OK and wait. I usually wait a few minutes.
Then turn it back on and wait a little longer.
Can't say whether it will work for you but it works 100% of the time with XP when I lose the Workgroup filesharing connection.
It's better than rebooting or even logging out/in.

  • Can't get ethernet bridge to connect to network

    Hi
I am trying to connect my old iMac G3 (10.2) to my airport express network with an Aeropad Mini (an ethernet bridge powered by USB hub on my mac - made by Macsense).
The network is seen successfully by an iMac G5, an Intel Macbook and a PC. The connection occasionally works but more often than not it does not see my airport express - instead it connects to a self-assigned IP. Sometimes it connects then drops off halfway through. Other times it just will not connect at all.
There are no drivers and you set it up via your browser. I can connect to the status and set-up page (192.168.1.50), after entering all the Aeropad info manually, and most times it can see my Airport Express (via the Site Survey on the set-up pages). but sometimes it does not even get that far. I reset the aeropad and restart the mac many times, and sometimes it works but mostly it doesn't.
    I'm using channel 11 and it's WAP-encrypted.
    Things I've tried:
updating the firmware from the macsense website
    checking it's on client mode
manually entering the DNS address of my router - 10.0.1.1.
Trashing the internetconfig preferences from the library
making sure that ethernet is at the top of my network port configurations
Plugging it into a powered USB hub
Trying it on my MacBook (running Leopard).
Still can't connect - just a self-assigned IP - even on on the new macbook.
Any help would be appreciated as I really can't get this to work and it's beginning to take over my life!. I thought it was working after I entered the DNS address but it just went down again the next day.
    Thanks.

This is probably repeating the steps which you have taken already, but I thought I'd put them in one place just in case.
    Problem:
If you're able to see other wireless networks but not your own. (And it works with AppleTV version 1.x)
It can be any of the following:
    1. No wireless signal/out of range (check your multicast setting and put this as low as possible, check the range with other wireless devices/moving your appletv closer)
    2. The wireless SSID is set to invisible/private (use "Other" on AppleTV and enter the SSID manually.)
    3. The AppleTV doesn't support the channel used. (Tune the wireless to use a lower channel such as those under 10.)
    4. The AppleTV is not supporting the security of your encryption.
    Troubleshooting:
    1. First try setting up a basic wireless network with no security, no frills such as a high multicast rate or high channel number and as a basic wireless b or g network. Position the AppleTV next to the basestation and then attempt to make the appletv connect to it. (Do not use an AdHoc network with your mac, as the AppleTV doesn't see these.) At this stage you're just trying to see if the AppleTV is even able to connect to your hardware. If this doesn't work there is possibly a larger problem at hand.
    2. If this works, then move the devices to their desired locations. (This checks that it's not a range/interference issue.)
    3. If this is still working, then the problem lays in a configuration setting. Firstly enable a security protocol, avoid WEP. Keep adding settings, keeping changes from the default to a minimum.
If you can't get past step 1, then it could be an issue with your wifi base station. Try getting the AppleTV to connect to a different wireless basestation (perhaps borrow one from a friend or a neighbour's unsecured network.)

  • How can I get Bridge to connect with my Iphone 5s?

It worked fine with Iphone 4s, but even though the IPhone 5s is connected to my Mac, Bridge will not recognize it.  Also, I cannot update to  6.5  in Bridge either for some reason.

Connect your iPhone via the standard USB connector to your computer, open Bridge and if you have not set to open Photodownloader automatically use the command  File / Get photo's from camera  or use the tiny camera icon with arrow down at in the icon bar top left of bridge window.
This should open Adobe Photodownloader and it should auto select the images and movies but otherwise use the option to select the source. Also study the options available in Photodownloader and use the advance button to get some thumbs of the content on your phone.

  • Can I use wifi bridge to connect wirelessly to Hum...

I am expecting my Humax box next week, with Powerline adapters. Could I safely use an Ethernet to WiFi bridge instead?.
One such device is NETGEAR WNCE2001-100PES Universal Wireless-N to Ethernet Internet Adapter. This can be powered from a USB port. Could I use the USB port on the Humax for this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think they are 200Mbps ones, although I use my own separately purchased 500Mbps ones from Netgear.
I find actual throughput to be about 1/4 of the connection speed visible via my power line adapter management software, depending on QoS setting. You want highest QoS for streaming to Youview.
So adapters that connect at near 500Mbps give about 120Mbps throughput (obviously more than sufficient to transmit my entire Infinity internet bandwidth) and those that connect at 120Mbps give about 30Mbps throughput.
The adapter (actually a 4 port gigabit switch with built in PLT) that feeds my Youview box falls into the latter category, and is in the worst performing location in the house, but that 30Mbps is of high integrity and more than sufficient for all HD streaming
I think the BT adapters have a pass through mains connection, so they don't take up a socket. You just plug whatever is plugged into the socket into the adapter instead. This socket is also normally filtered so use it to protect any AV equipment that might get upset by noise on the mains......

  • 1310 Bridge loses connection

I work at a college campus where we have a couple of 1310 bridges between our main campus and a group of apartment buildings that we own 3 blocks down the road. One 1310 bridge is in our bell tower and the other is in one of the apartments. The other apartments have 1240 AG access points. The problem I am having is that periodically the remote apartments will loose their network connection. Originally I thought it was a problem with the remote bridge because rebooting the bridge at the remote apartment would bring the connection back up. I recently discovered that I could bring the remote location back up by rebooting the bridge in the belltower. At first we could go a couple of weeks before the link would go down now it seems to be happening much more frequently.
Any help in troubleshooting this would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

You might want to post carrier busy test results for both ends as well as signal strength readings for both ends. If memory serves you'll need commands like (check my syntax):
    dot11 dot11 0 carrier busy (assuming 802.11g)
    and
    show dot11 ass X.X.X (X.X.X = remote end mac)

  • Bridge loses connection after a few minutes

    Hi at all,
my name is Daniel and i have a problem with two AIR-SAP1532E-E-K9 with the software version 15.2(4)JB3b.
The situation: Our customer want to connect two buildings with a wireless bridge, so he bought two 1532 with two AIR-ANT5114P2M-N= antennas.
Over the wireless connection should go traffic from different VLANs.
The root bridge is configured as follows:
    dot11 ssid [SSID]
       vlan 212
       authentication open
       authentication key-management wpa
       infrastructure-ssid
       wpa-psk ascii 7 [KEY]
    interface Dot11Radio1
     no ip address
     no ip route-cache
encryption vlan 212 mode ciphers aes-ccm
     ssid [SSID]
     antenna gain 14
     peakdetect
     no dfs band block
     power local 15
     packet retries 64 drop-packet
     channel dfs
     station-role root bridge
    interface Dot11Radio1.204
     encapsulation dot1Q 204
     no ip route-cache
     logging event subif-link-status
     bridge-group 2
     bridge-group 2 spanning-disabled
    interface Dot11Radio1.212
     encapsulation dot1Q 212 native
     no ip route-cache
     logging event subif-link-status
     bridge-group 1
     bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
    interface Dot11Radio1.463
     encapsulation dot1Q 463
     no ip route-cache
     logging event subif-link-status
     bridge-group 3
     bridge-group 3 spanning-disabled
The GigabitEthernet is configured like the dot11radio 1 with the Sub interfaces for each VLAN.
The non-root bridge is configured as follows:
    dot11 ssid [SSID]
       vlan 212
       authentication open
       authentication key-management wpa
       infrastructure-ssid
       wpa-psk ascii 7 [Key]

encryption vlan 212 mode ciphers aes-ccm
     ssid [SSID]
     antenna gain 14
     peakdetect
     power local 11

     station-role non-root bridge
    interface Dot11Radio1.204
     encapsulation dot1Q 204
     no ip route-cache
     logging event subif-link-status
     bridge-group 2
     bridge-group 2 spanning-disabled
    interface Dot11Radio1.212
     encapsulation dot1Q 212 native
     no ip route-cache
     logging event subif-link-status
     bridge-group 1
     bridge-group 1 spanning-disabled
The GigabitEthernet is configured like the dot11radio 1 with one subinterface for each VLAN.
At the moment the non-root bridge connects to the root. All is fine and each subinterface comes up. After 3-4 minutes the non-root logs the message that there is no response from the root and shut down the interfaces and after a short moment the non-root connect to the root again.
The root shows with the command sh dot11 associations:

So it looks like the root bridge shuts the interfaces and then activate them after a short time.
What i want to do next is to upgrade the software version and to set the channel of the 5 GHz interface manually.
I hope somebady have another idea and would share it with us.
    regards
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your brief explanation, the configuration looks good and from the logs I see that the radios are going up and down.
Kindly, make sure that the antennas are installed and mounted in the right direction.
Change the channels manually, you are using Radio 1 for bridging make sure there is enough coverage to cover Radio 1.
You can also test with Radio 0 for bridging and i also understand that there are some of the known issues with the version you are running for bridging and WGB connectivity.
Once after doing all these tests it's good for you to upgrade the APs to 15.2(4)JB5 and above.

  • Airport Extreme Bridge Mode Connection Drop

    Hi everyone,
Hoping that someone will be able to help me. I have a one year old son who is now getting his hands into everything so a few weeks ago I decided to look at my options for networking my home iMac and External HD's.
I am currently running a SKY (Netgear router) into an Airport Extreme set up in Bridge mode. I have turned off the SSID of the SKY Router and everything connects to the Airport. On the AIrport I have a USB hub attached which then has three external HDs attached to it. I know this is a lot, but I have not had any issues at all with data transfer with this set up.
The issues I am having is that on average, once or twice a day the iMac will drop connection to the Airport. There is no patern to this as the iMac will drop connection while I have been working on the machine and also at times when it has been woken from sleep mode. There is then no physical way to restore the connection unless I restart the iMac. Even turning on/off airport does not fix the issue. If I try this, the iMac then seems to not be able to find any wirless networks, even those that are in the area of my home.
I have turn off the the airport and ran the iMac simply connecting to the SKY router and have experienced zero problems, the issue only happens when I introduce the Airport Extreme.
Does anyone know what might be causing the problem? I really need to try to get this to work so that I can eliminate the need to have the external hard drives attached physically to the iMac. In my home the router/Airport and drives are safely out of the way in a child proof area. I fear that if I have to introduce them back to being physically connected to the iMac they will no longer be safe from small hands!!!
    Many thanks for any advice.
    -  Neil

Unfortunately, you did not not include information about the operating system that you will use to configure the AirPort Extreme, so we would need that you be able to provide you with the correct steps to set up the AirPort Extreme.
Bridge Mode would be the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme, but you will not have to worry about this if you use the setup "wizard" in AirPort Utility on your Mac or an iPhone / iPad since the wizard will automatically provide the correct settings for the AirPort Extreme.
I'm not clear though on whether you want the AirPort Extreme to provide another separate wireless network or extend the existing Arris network. If you plan to locate the AirPort Extreme a room or two away from the Arris, then it might make sense to extend the Arris network, so you will have one "big" network that provides greater range.
Whether or not the Arris will have NAT issues, we cannot say. This will be one of those times where you will not know whether something will work correctly until you try.
If you are not in a rush to get the AirPort Extreme configured, temporarily power off the Extreme and get things working with the Arris modem/router and your Xbox.

  • Bridge internet connection problem

Have been using playbook and bridge to my torch since November no problem. Yesterday had browser say my provider did not support the connection to my phone.  Next time I connected no problem and no problems using it until this afternoon. No connection, no Internet via playbook but Internet on torch works great. Reinstalled bridge on the torch, no luck.
    Any suggestions?

Maybe Telus wants you to do a tether plan. Did you do a battery pull for 30 seconds and delete the bridge connection on both before the battery pull and try it again.

  • Bridging network connections - access connection problem

    Hi there,
I need to sum up my network connections (wlan, umts, e1000, loopback) to one connetion using a bridge. Unfortunatelly there seems to be a problem with the lenovo sw. After a few minutes connection time, wlan just stops working. I guess it has something to do with the automatic switching of the access connection system if it detects another network. Is there somewhere in the settings an option to allow bridging?
    Thank you for any hint.

This sounds like a similiar problem:

  • Having trouble bridging wired connection with Airport Express

I've had an Airport Express Base Station for a little while, really only using it to wirelessly print and stream my music.
I'm at my college now, and there's a campus wide wired network. I've been trying to bridge this network so I can wirelessly connect to the internet with my laptop, Nintendo DS and eventually Nintendo Wii. The problem is that I can only get the orange blinking light on the AEBS, I don't have the software that came with it (though I have the Airport Admin and Setup stuff under Utilities), and the computer doesn't seem to recognize the base station at all.
I'm an idiot, I'm pretty certain, but is there something easy I am overlooking here? Will an AEBS not bridge a wired network unless it's cable or DSL? I'm unclear on exactly what kind of network my college uses.
    thanks!

Most likely your college's network is providing NAT/DHCP services. I suggest that you set up your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "wireless bridge."
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.
    - Wait at least 5 minutes.
