Bringing wireless to a Campus

I am wanting to add wireless to our campus, but I also want to protect our wired network. The powers that be also want a single login for our clients (students with differant types of wireless cards).
I am looking at using the 1200 series APs
Could I add an port to my firewall and put the APs on a seperate vlan and treat the APs as an untrusted network?
Also could I use a RADIUS server to authenticate the wireless users with active directory accounts from another server?

Radius proxy will give you single sign-on.
If you put all of the APs in a subnet separated from your wired network by a firewall (you can use trunking between switches to avoid pulling a whole new cable plant) you can achieve what you are after.
Alternately, you can use a multi-layered security approach to protect APs directly on the wired subnet. A VPN on top of WEP and a MAC Address filter would protect you well.

  • Wireless net on campus, easy connection?

ok, i guess that this is a rather obnoxious question, but i would like to know before i get my macbook...
my campus is (for the most part) wireless (yay!!) i just want to know if i have to do or get anything special to et online.
    Are there any fees?
do i just look for a signal, get one and just go online?
is it really 'just that easy'?
    thanks a bunch!!!

    Hello...
It is really that easy! Weeeeeeeeeeee. No fees. You open up your notebook and most of the time it will automatically connect to the stongest available WiFi network. Also I must mention that there have been some problems reported with the macbooks and MBP dropping wireless connections. I have had no problem with my macbook, so far, joining an open network.
Oh and the Macbook is fricken awesome!

  • Cannot Bring Wireless Router (WRT54GS v6) online -- Sysco light stays orange

Tried and tried to to clear the router to create an new SSID but cannot. The sysco light stays orange or white and flashe.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate ya.
    Thanks
    Bill

Try upgrading the router's firmware :
    For WRT54GS V6 firmware  Download
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • How do I use Home Sharing on campus network?

I attend Auburn University and they use 802.11X authentication for wireless devices on campus. Right now all my Macbook Pro, iPhone 4, and iPad can all connect to the network just fine. The only problem is that they cannot see each other over AirPlay or iTunes Home Sharing. Does anybody know how I can get this fixed or is this something I am going to need to work through with campus IT?

go to home-sharing on Apple TV and type in your info as ask.
    hope this help

  • WRT310N drops wireless.

On a regular basis, my WRT310N will lose wireless functionality, but only when my laptop is connected to it wirelessly and I turn it off suddenly or it goes to sleep or hibernation. When I turn it back on or wake it up, the PC works fine, I can see other wireless networks in the area (So its own wireless adapter is working) but I can no longer see the SSID of my wireless network setup on the WRT310N.
I've tried rescanning, rebooting my PC and it all works fine. There is nothing wrong with my PC. No matter what I do with it, I can see and connect to other wireless networks. I can also plug a ethernet cable from the WRT310N router and connect to my network, but not wirelessly. The only way to bring wireless functionality back is to reset or reboot the WRT310N. I have always go to my router, unplug it, wait a second and then plug it back in. After it boots back up, it works fine, but only until my laptop gets turned off or goes to sleep.

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Open the setup page of router using 192.168.1.1 then put in the
password as admin...all you need to do is do the wireless settings such
as Radio Band Frequency to Standard 20 MHZ frequency, channel to 11.
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
    thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m wireless goes offline after system is shutdown

I am using the HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m on a Dell XPS 16 with Windows 7 64bit. I have setup the printer to connect to the Belkin wireless router so it is on the network. I have setup the printer numerous times and had it working over wireless many times. After the PC is shutdown the printer goes offline. I have to rerun setup over and over again to bring wireless back online. I added the MAC address to the Belkin router, and I have the device trusted in my Norton Firewall. I keep seeing "HP Network Support Automatic (Delayed Start)" in services, but changing it does not seem to make any difference I still need to rerun setup again after the system is shutdown. I am also seeing two printer icons in Devices and Printers. One is just the Photosmart Printer with a generic printer icon; and the second is Photosmart Printer, Scanner, Copier with a picture of the Photosmart which I believe it should be. I have run the setup at least 10 times, and I keep getting a good working wireless system then after the machine is shutdown for the day the printer goes offline and will not print again. How can I prevent the printer from going offline in wireless mode?
    This question was solved.

Setting a static IP address may help this issue:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). If you do not know this, enter the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank. Click 'Apply
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • WRT54G to WGA54G bridge OR XBOX Wireless Adapter

    1. Just hooked up a new WRT54G bringing wireless to my home network. Wired PCs (4) and wireless laptop connect and work fine (laptop drops connection from time to time).
    2. Wanted wireless gaming via WGA54G, compeleted install per instructions, hooked up to XBOX Live, set up account, started to check out XBOXLive stuffs, lost connection. Never able to get WGA54G to hold connection, despite many reloads and reconfigs.
    3. 2 Days later; bought a $100 XBOX Wireless Adapter. Installed per instructions, surfed XBOXLive, all seemed great.....lost connection.  Researched all the blogs and both Linksys and XBOX 360 sites for anything that might help. The only thing I found was a statement that Linksys and MS knew about a problem with the WRT54G losing connectivity and where working on it, telling me to go into WRT54G device and disable UPnP.  Did so, still no luck.....so;
DOES ANYONE HAVE AN XBOX 360 ON THEIR WIRELESS NETWORK THAT WORKS? iF

You can't give up on those good devices until you have upgraded their firmwares. Take a look on the sticker under the router to get it's exact version no. After that, upgrade the firmwares and reconfigure the settings on both the router and the WGA54G. Hope this helps.

  • NAC with NON-cisco wireless

    Hi there,
I know that with WLC 5.1 and NAC 4.5 Cisco started to support OOB, NAC implementation. Now here is my question:
A customer has CISCO environment except for the wireless which is another vendor. What are the options to bring wireless traffic into NAC server? Is OOB deployment possible?
    Thanks,
    rdianat

So what is the solution for this scenario?
remote site has non-cisco autonomous wireless AP. NAC is centralized. I can not use OOB since there is no support for non-cisco AP in OOB mode. As a result I use InBand mode. This means that local wireless trffic in remote site must travel to central site, go through NAC Server and go back to remote site. Is this correct?

  • Linksys wireless works on every computer but mine

  • Mail program keeps popping up

For some reason, the mail program starts to pop up unpredictably today. It prevents me from doing anything on my MacBook and becomes very annoying.
I have two pop accounts set up in mail, and I am using the wireless network on campus as usual. I bought the MacBook in October this year, and it has been working well except minor issues like CPU whining. I have installed the latest security update for intel MacBook 2006-2007.
I tried to quit, force quit the program, restart and shut down, none of them worked. I also noticed when the mail is doing that, the website I am trying to log into keeps asking me to verify my ip with the student number. This does not happen usually. Right now, the mail program seems to be quiet for 5 minutes, allowing me to type in some message here.
I wonder what could it be related to? What other procedures I could try to stop the mail program from popping up? Could it be a UNIX virus?
    Thanks,
    Ying

David, thanks again for your prompt reply. By saying letting Mail run in the background, do you mean just keep whatever I am doing and ignore the Mail? Even as I am typing now, as I am not closing Mail, it would bring itself to the front, so I have to click the discussion page and continue my typing. But bafore I start typing again, Mail would bring itself up again, and I have to click the web page window again. I feel I have to race with Mail and type in something here. I am sorry maybe I misunderstood something. I will check and see if I have anyother program linked to Mail. But I really don't think that's the way it should work.

  • Ad Hoc to Infrastructure

    Hello,
My friend recently received an e-mail from the University saying that they had noticed his laptop (MacBook with Leopard installed) was utilizing an Ad Hoc networking option, instead of Infrastructure. They want him to switch the configuration to Infrastructure, but neither of us have any clue how to do this. I do know the difference between the two, but haven't the faintest idea of how to switch the configuration over. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.S-This occurs when he brings the laptop to campus and joins their wireless network.

Here was the e-mail in question, in case it helps any:
You are receiving this message because your University ID was observed using a misconfigured laptop to access the University wireless network.
This laptop is configured to support ad-hoc mode, which essentially creates a "black hole" that affects the usability of the University wireless service for yourself and other users in close proximity to you.
Please set your laptop to Infrastructure Only. The elimination of these "black holes" will provide a better wireless experience for you and your neighbors. Your co-operation is appreciated.

  • Airport Card no longer recognized by PowerBook

I always take my PowerBook G4 to class with me for the purpose of taking notes during class. I was connected to the internet there, over the wireless network (on campus) with no problem.
When I got back home, my PowerBook wasn't seeing the wireless network (at home, seperate from the wireless network on campus), but I knew it was working because my iMac is connected to it just fine, along with two other computers in my house. I tried restarting a couple of times, and actually typing the name of the network into the Airport drop-down menu. This all did nothing, as did repairing the disk permissions.
I find it very unlikely that the card is not seated correctly, because first of all, when I brought the PowerBook back from campus (when it was working properly) it was tranported in my TUMI bag, which has a dedicated padded holder for PowerBooks, and then immediately took it out and sat it on my desk next to my iMac only to find the PowerBook no longer seeing the wireless signal.
And at this point, I could still turn Airport on and off, and I restarted the computer a couple of times to see if it would pick up the signal, all the while Airport was still recognized by the system (I could still turn it off and on from the drop-down menu, but no wireless networks were present).
So, I popped in my OS X DVD to boot from it to use the Repair Disk feature. It came up with an error that said something to the tune of "incorrect number of threads." It repaired the disk without any probems, or so I thought (and so it thought).
Now, the computer wouldl not function because it runs into a kernal panic, forcing me to hard shut-down the computer. It happened everytime, sometimes during startup, sometimes not until I got into OS X, but always soon after the OS starts.
I then booted the computer as a "Safe boot" and this seemed to stop the kernal panics, and I shut down the computer and started it again with no panics. There was no longer any recognition of the Airport card, either. Not even through the Airport Setup Assistant. It keeps telling me there is no card installed.
I have tried two seperate cards, as I thought maybe the one went bad, but nothing came of this. I tried zapping the PRAM, booting into Open Firmware to reset to defaults, all leading to nothing. I even went so far as to completely erase the drive and do a clean install of OS X, which now drops my system down to 10.4. NOTHING.
Please, anyone willing to help that would be great, even if you would like to contact me through iChat and we can discuss this over iSight to get to the root of the problem. Screen name is CoreyAtMiamiU.
Sorry about the long post and thanks for taking the time to read it.

This is a user to user discussion area. So it is unpredictable as to when someone with a suggestion will respond to your post. An hour in the middle of a work day isn't a long time.
Since the card is recognized, there isn't anything wrong with that side of the card. If the card isn't receiving a signal, either the RF side of the card has failed, the antenna wire isn't connected properly, or the antenna in the PowerBook has failed.

  • Using SG300 directly as a router?

Hello, I am building a new home with several Cat6 ethernet ports wired throughout (at least one to each room) and I want to connect them all through a rock-solid reliable gigabit switch like the SG300 or SG200.  I am also going to use wireless N (something like the E4200) but I would prefer not to use the wireless device as the router since I want a solid, reliable connection from my ethernet-connected devices and the Internet and I honestly don't trust consumer-level devices like the E4200 to be reliable without dropping my connection.  I have computers that need a constant VPN connection and I have other computers that do bittor...umm, network intensive activity that usually bring wireless routers to their knees
So what I would really like is to connect the internet cable modem (Ubee) directly to the business-class switch (SG300 or SG200), and have that business-class switch do the routing and NAT to my entire network, and I'd just use the E4200 as a wireless access point.  I'm not a network admin and the idea of the CLI scares me, but I can probably use it to at least switch the SG300 to Layer 3 mode...that looks simple enough.  I'd definitely want to use a web GUI for everything else.  From what I've read, the SG200 is a Layer 2 device so it couldn't be used as a router, but can the SG300 in Layer 3 be used as a router connected directly to the cable modem?  Will it support NAT and UPnP and all of the other features that the E4200 would (minus the wireless of course)?  For example one thing I will want is to be able to have multiple XBoxes connected to the switch all with an "Open NAT".
If the SG300 can't do this, what's the best rock-solid business class device that I can connect directly to the cable modem that will support things like UPnP and NAT?
Thanks everyone in advance for their advice!

  • Data plan!  why???  whats the difference of me using Wifi or being charged for a data plan?

Feature phones iterally suck, even the internet pro reviews on the phones are very low and most of the feature phones that are  reviewed  the reviewer gives  their  last comment as "don't buy" .
I do not need a data plan, ( I carry either a Verizon netbook or a notebook for all my internet needs) nor am I comfortable with the charge of a data plan being necessary or is this simply another way for a large company with a large profit margin to stick it to the consumer knowing we have to maintain a cell phone in this day and age?.
I had settled on the KinTwo, the reviews are not glowing but .... r not that horrible either.  It is also the only phone which gives the owner WiFi accessibility.  (which makes me wonder if this is the reason Verizon has pulled it off the market).  From my extensive research the KinTwo is the only feature phone choice.  But..... When I went back to the site to order it was gone, and the VW stores do not carry it.
UGH>  I am so discouraged by the data plans and the extremely high price.  Would someone please tell me what the difference is in my using my Netbook, laptop (notebook) on WiFi and not being charged a data fee?  Or why I can bring Wireless Internet into my home and have all my WiFi accessible electronics connect through my main ISP with an additional fee for each WiFi user????   But I am not able to use a Smartphone this way???
I am serious about these data plans  are they necessary????

once upon a time verizon did not require data plans
    many users were happy
but t h is did not last for users started having problems with thier hands
they would often hit the wrong buttons and use data
sometims as little as a mb, sometimes many mb
verizon forums and customer service started recieving phone calls to get credits for this usage
after all its not the users fault is it? i mean are they responsible if they had the phone to a 2 year old to play with and the kid brings up the browser?
so verizon decided it was in its best interest to protect its users.  they started requireing data plans so you wouldnt get hit with huge bills for being an idiot.
So if you wanna cry about data plans blame all those people out there that complained
