Broadband keeps slowing down to LESS than dialup s...

Hi, Ive noticed a problem intermittently with my broadband (in addition to the disconnects Im still experiencing on the pc as detailed in another thread) where the speed of it will drop to 20-30BPS (note NOT kbps or Mbps but BYTES) which then forces me to reset the router.
I do NOT have a homehub as even though I was never issued with one at all (had the old voyager 205 which broke) and am using a belkin router.
This has happened twice today, both times in order to restore the speed to my internet and the various devices that run it, Ive had to pull the cable out the back of the router to reset it as during this period, I cannot even load the wholesale speed checker let alone the speedtest.net one on the pc. I manage to initiate a speedtest.net speed check on my tablet via the app but this never comes to fruition during this period because the speed is far to slow to even finish the test.
Ive tried leaving the router alone for over an hour when this happens, and it still makes no difference, the speed steadfastly refuses to rise unless the router is reset.
Is this likely a router issue (it is a fairly ageing 8 years old now) and am I better to just replace the thing.
Current router stats having just been forced to reset it again due to absolutely NOTHING loading, not even google after a 10 minute wait.

What is interesting to note, is even after 5-6 days uptime on the router, it no longer reports any errors at all and since the exchange was upgraded to the 21CN lines from the old capped adsl lines, and since then, its also stopped reporting my attenuation.

The contract with BT was renewed at the very late end of 2012 when they moved our line up to ADSLmax after a long fight to get my capped 2meg connection changed, and it was the sales team who told me then that I would have to pay for a homehub if I wanted one, and they quoted a price which was somewhere around £35 if I recall correctly.
If I was to go to say Currys/Argos tomorrow and get a new router (probably faster than trying to negotiate a home hub with BT) would something like this one be the right one to get for example (in terms of connection to phone line rather than a cable line) http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing-accessories/networking/bt-wireless-routers/netgear-dgn2200-n3... (would also need a LOT of ethernet ports as those are my preferred connections for what I use my internet for which is Xbox360/online gaming). The only things that currently use the wireless facility in the house are the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and a Samsung ace Smartphone and on odd occasions, a blackberry, everything else is connected via ethernet.
*edit* realised I had linked the Cable version of the router not the Phone line one.

  • Problems with the Fios 20/5 connection speed in my area dropping down to less than 3mbs.

I have written out a flyer that I plan to go door to door with. Since I am under contract with Verizon, I am forced to honor my side of the contract. Even if they are allowed to make me pay for a service that I am not completely getting. I am very displeased and as soon as my contract is up, I will change back to My local cable companies all in one that does not require a contract and has no issue such as the one I am having.
Do you have Verizon Fios Internet?
Are you on the 20/5 connection?
If so, you may not be getting the speed you are paying for. I am on a 20/5 connection and when my computer is on for longer than an hour the internet download speed with Verizon Fios starts to slow down until it is below 3mbs. It takes about 24 hours to get down to 3mbs but only about an hour or two to get down to about 6-7mbs when I am paying for 20mbs…
I have 3 computers in my home that have Windows Vista, Windows XP home edition and Windows Media Edition 2005. All of the computers run into this same exact issue, I have tried every setting I could think of with my 24 years of computer technical experience. I finally took one machine with Windows XP and ran a full format on the hard drive and reinstalled a fresh Windows Xp Operating system onto the hard drive so it is a bare bones OS. This way there is no other software on the machine that could possibly be causing the problem and found that when I connected online through Verizon Fios the machine still ran into the same exact issue. This proves to me that the issue is not on any of my machines.
Now all of this time my buddy that lives 1.2 miles away from my house has been having the same issue with three computers at his home also. He has Windows Vista on two machines and Windows XP Pro on one.
When I concluded that it was a Verizon Fios issue, after a few months of trying to get by, researching, diagnosing and losing much information in order to verify it was on Verizon’s side, I contacted technical support at Verizon’s online website. The agent and I went through the regular procedure that anyone would have to go through and I patiently explained what I had done to try to diagnose the issue. The agent came to the conclusion that he could not figure out the problem so he guessed that the Verizon router/modem may be the issue and told me he would send me a new one by mail.
I received the new Verizon router/modem, installed it and had to call to have it activated. Afterward it still had the same exact issue as the prior router/modem. So now we know it’s not my computers, it’s not the router/modem. My Verizon router/modem is connected right at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home, usually just inside or outside your garage wall. Mine is just outside…
From here my buddy, who has been having this problem also the entire time, called the local office of Verizon Fios and an installer was setup to come over to his home and trouble shoot the issue. My buddy called me and told me when the installer was headed to his home and I met him at his home to see what the installer found and in hope that my issue would be fixed at the same time. The installer went through the system at his house and was frustrated about not finding the reason for the issue and ready to leave without fixing anything. I simply asked that he stay long enough to see the issue present itself within an hour-hour and a half.
His laptop itself already showed the speed drop from 20mbs to between 16-17mbs, it was on its way down. He basically told us something that online tech support already stated to me, it is extremely difficult to prove it is on Verizon’s side. In other words it is extremely difficult to prove it, in a way that will convince Verizon to check its own servers, routers and software updates to their own systems. The installer, good guy, couldn’t/wouldn’t stay but we did convince him not to simply drop the issue. He called shop and they sent another installer out to take over the issue.
The new installer, great guy, got up to speed on what was already done at my buddies home. The first installer, checked and replaced the Verizon router/modem, checked the wiring and splitters. Basically went through the entire system up to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home. He pulled and replaced the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), thinking that perhaps the unit was compromised. While he was doing this job a tech was called and asked to stop by for assistance with the issue. The tech checked the computers inside and tried to do some settings that the main office informed him to try. I explained to the tech that the same issue was happening at my house, that I went through every setting I could think of and find online to help alleviate the issue. After some shop talk about what I had tried, including the full format and reinstall of the operating system on one of my machines, he just as I came to the conclusion that it couldn’t be with the computers and since everything that had to do with the Verizon Fios system from the street to the end-user computer had been checked, verified and/or replaced, the issue had to be coming from Verizon’s main office.
The installer had already checked the main at the road that has the 3x2 green service cover on it by the side walk. Everything was in good working order. The tech called the main office to see if my buddy and I were on the same hub, basically a big splitter that continues the service from the main office to the homes, we were not. So that was ruled out…
My understanding of the system ends there. The only other components I know of are the Main branch’s routers, servers and software.
Verizon had a new connection speed added to their system, 25/15 about the same time our issue began. So I am guessing that when they updated the system to include this new connection speed they corrupted the software for the 20/5 connection.
We have been waiting to hear from the tech that was at my buddy’s house, to see if the issue will be dealt with. My buddy has called him a couple of times and he has mentioned that he is trying to get it addressed and to call back if we hadn’t heard from him. He remembered who he and I were and what the issue was, so I believe he is taking it seriously. How far he can move the issue is beyond me…
I want to add that my buddy and I have been customers with the all in one package from Verizon Fios since their services have moved into our area, about a year and a half… It has only been since about June that this issue has presented itself, before then we were on 7th heaven with the speeds. We couldn’t have been more than happy with the services.
This issue has caused that to all go afoul, not only do the speeds get down to less than 3mbs but the speed is not smooth at all. Rather the 3mbs speed is stop and go, freezing in between at times, very choppy. Barely usable at times, unless you restart the computers and start over.
We are hoping that anyone with Verizon Fios Internet Services will keep an eye on their speeds by going to http://speedtest.net and doing tests to verify they are getting the speeds they are paying Verizon for.
This is what it will take for Verizon to take this issue seriously is to gather everyone on the system that may be having the same issue. I believe it is everyone that is within the 1.2 miles from my house to my buddy’s and will distribute flyers to each and every house in between.
If you find that your speed is not as fast as it should be please contact me and I will add you to the list, this way we can see exactly how far this problem covers and perhaps it will also help to show a pattern and understanding as to why the issue is present in the first place.
    My contact information,
I have left this out here, you can contact me on these forums...

Actually what this came down to was an issue between Windows Vista and an Ethernet Card on one of the machines in each of our local networks.
Even though our two machines are 6 years apart, we both have the same ethernet adapter on our main desktops. A RealTek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. It seems that the adapter does not work at the 20mbs download speeds with Vista. For some reason the adapter does not shut down when the computer does? I don't understand why but it doesn't, it keeps the connection alive. I removed the ethernet cable and pulled the power cable and had my two other computers still connected to the network and found that the issue was resolved. The way I found out was that I used the connections on my main computer to hook up one I had laying around and through further testing found the problem no longer existed...
Then I realized that my buddy and I installed Windows Vista at about the same time, a couple of months ago. Funny how you can forget an important detail like that. Then I remembered that he had the same identical ethernet adapter as I did, I had noticed that while trouble shooting his computer at his home but didn't think it was important at the time. Until the issue was narrowed down to the adapter, then it all seemed to all fall into line.
Quite humbling... In the end, anyone who has Windows Vista and this NIC probably will have problems with the 20mbs download speed of the computers on their own networks. I tried the latest Vista driver from RealTek and also tried to roll back the driver, with no success....
Back at the beginning when we first had fios installed in our homes there wasn't an issue when we had the 10/2 speeds and had Vista. Then we decided to change from Vista to XP because we both were having issues as to what programs you could use and which you could not, shortly after having fios installed. Then when verizon upgraded us to 20/5 we were amazed at the speed and still had no issue because we had XP on our main computers with the RealTek adapters...
We reinstalled Vista because it seemed like we were having more issues with XP by getting hit with Antivirus2008 and its variants and thought it time for a change back...
It didn't really hit us that Vista could be the culprit because we both have a laptop in our networks that have had Vista on them from the get go when there were no issues... We also didn't notice just how bad it was right away and over time kind of left the Vista install out of the equation.
Just strange that one computer can effect all the other computers on the network, even when it is shut down...
I allowed the other two computers to run 24hours and the issue did not present itself, when I added the main computer with the RealTek adapter back to the mix it reappeared. The Realtek adapter is the only real common denominator between his machine and mine.
So now we have three choices,
We can go back to Windows XP.
We can buy a new NIC or a wireless card to replace the RealTek...
Hopefully this post will help anyone else who runs into this problem, it has been very frustrating to say the least...
Thanks to everyone for their help and I apologize for complaining about verizon when it was not a verizon issue. I came to the conclusion that the only part verizon really played was upgrading us to a 20/5 tier which I am thankful for...
Would be nice if this card was on a list that Verizon support could use to troubleshoot , diagnose or eliminate for future support issues.

  • Keeping no of days less than 15 in field DELTIMESTof BWOM_SETTINGS table

    Hello Experts,
Is it possible to keep no of days less than 15 in field DELTIMEST of BWOM_SETTINGS table so as to keep data in BWFI_AEDAT only for 2 days.
Also I tried but its not working,it still keeping data of last 15 days.
    Regards,
    Ankush Sharma

    Hi Ankush,
DELTIMEST is the minimum retention period of time stamp tables.
As per SAP logic, the minimum retention period for entries in the time stamp table is 15 days. So if you decrease the parameter value less than 15, SAP will automatically take the minimum value as 15 and ignore the settings. That is why you are not able to delete the entries less than 15 days.
Ideally, when entries are deleted from table BWOM2_TIMEST, the corresponding entries for the changed line items are deleted simultaneously from log table BWFI_AEDAT, BWFI_AEDA2 and BWFI_AEDA3.
BWFI_AEDAT table contains list of changed documents with the change date and the document number which helps in the delta extraction. SAP has recommended DELTIMEST value to be >= 60.
Refer the below SAP note: (check BWOM_SETTINGS part in solution)

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

  • MBP keeps slowing down after some uptime

I bought my MBP less than a month ago, and after about two days of uptime it starts to slow down dramatically. Apps become unresponsive and/or respond too slowly and performance as a whole is very bad.
I'm running Lion on the 13'' Core i5 with 4 gigs of RAM. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Friends of mine who have older MBPs get great performance even after much longer uptimes (like a week on end).

  • Macbook keeps slowing down and crashing

    Hi,
I started having this problem about 2 weeks ago. Everything was working fine, then out of nowhere, my macbook froze. I waited for about 10 minutes, then I turned it off. When I turned the computer back on, it was EXTREMELY slow. It took 15 minutes just to boot, and after that, even when i just moved the cursor, the rainbow wheel would appear and keep spining for 20 minutes. It was impossible to do anything. So I decided to restore the hard drive from a backup I had. After I did that, it worked fine for a couple hours, then the same thing happened. Then I did some research and concluded that my hard drive was dying, so I got a new one, restored it from my backup and replaced my old hard drive. But after a few hours same thing happened again.
So I know the problem is not related to the hard drive. Also, I everything seems to work fine when I boot from an external hard drive. Only when I replace and boot from the internal hard drive connection, the slow down occurs and eventually gets to a point where I can't do anything with my computer. Sometimes I can repair it using the disk utility and diskwarrior, but it doesn't last long, eventually it starts slowing down again and then the same thing happens. The operating system doesn't make any difference either. It happens both with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I'd appreciate it if anyone knows what would be causing this problem.
    Thank you.

How much free space on the drive?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
I have more than 50% free disk space. I did have some slowing down problems before because of disk space, but this time it's different. It's not a regular kind of slowin down, it slows down so much that it becomes imposible to do anything. Even when I just move the cursor, rainbow wheel appears and doesn't go away for 10 minutes.
    But thank you anyway.

  • My computer keeps slowing down

I Have a hp envy notebook. Ram is 8gb and it has Intel 7i

When it slows down, are you able to jump into the Task Manager to see what's eating up the resources?
If not, run task manager in front of other windows and try provoke the slowdown.
AE can often bog down the hard drive on machines with less ram than the project requires, as it caches a lot of stuff. I had same issue until installed an SSD for AE cache

  • Why does Photoshop keep slowing down?

I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 for two years now, and for some reason it seems to have the problem of slowing down after using it for a while, so if I'm working on a project I have to keep closing it and reopening it to get it fast again. It's weird because it doesn't seem to matter how much stuff is on the canvas, it's just how much I've drawn and hit undo and erased or did anything, After like 5 minutes of straight work it just gets too slow for me to work in, like when I switch tools or change the color it takes a couple seconds to respond. So literally every couple minutes I have to restart Photoshop and open the same file.
What's really odd is that sometimes Photoshop will work perfectly fine and stay lightning fast for hours. Like, for the last couple of months it's been 100% fine, but since a few days ago it started to have this "slowing down" issue again. Every couple months it seems to decide to be perfectly fine or just really annoying. I didn't change anything in my computer.
It can't be my computers specs or my settings in Photoshop, but I will tell you all of that anyway.
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

There is no malware scanner running, in fact I have tried closing out all other applications and unnecessary processes to help improve performance. No luck.
Also, my post actually wasn't quite finished, but my internet shut off on me last night and I guess that just automatically posted whatever I had done before then. What's even better is that the forums won't allow me to edit it. What great features!
Anyway, here's the FULL spec sheet of my computer...
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
    GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB
    Storage - 1x 128GB SSD (OS installed on), 1x 750GB HDD, 1x 160GB HDD
I have the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.1 Extended, installed on the SSD. Here's the settings I have in the preferences:
    Memory Usage - 100%
    Scratch Disks - All 3, SSD 1st, 750GB HDD 2nd, 160GB HDD 3rd
    History States - 100
    Cache Levels - 8
    Cache Tile Size - 1028K
I have fiddled with these settings and restarted Photoshop countless times. In the end it's the same exact result: Photoshop slows down after a few minutes of work and I have to restart it. I have about 50GB free on the SSD, 150GB free on the 750GB, and about 140GB free on the 160GB.
I don't understand why it gets so slow even when my RAM usage only makes it up to about 45%. Why doesn't it just utilize ALL of the memory like I told it to?
I've tried setting cache to 1, 2, and 4, same result. Cache tile size to all the different settings, same result. History states to an extremely low level like 10, same result. I just don't understand why Photoshop is doing this, especially because it decides to speed up on its own every couple of months...

  • Why does my iPad 3 keep slowing down?

My iPad 3 slows down quite often, especially when checking or sending emails, and sending an iMessage. I'm using Infinity broadband and is showing max download speed.
Do the apps slow it down?

Close All Open Apps...  Perform a Reset... Try again...

  • IPad Retina storage is going down after ios8.02 was installed.  I had over 6.4 gig before installation and am now down to less than 700 mb.  I've deleted apps, there's no music or videos on my iPad, and I've deleted most pictures.

IiPad retina storage is disappearing after update to ios8.02.  I had over 6.4 gig before the update.  I now have less than 710 mb.  There is no music or videos on the iPad.  I have deleted almost all apps and most photos.  Every time I use it, the storage is going down.  I have tried resetting by powering off and this has no effect.

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Macbook pro keeps slowing down

My Macbook pro had been playing up lately.  Looking at the activity monitor the Memory Pressure keeps going to red and slowing the computer down. A Safari Web
Content process keeps opening up and causes it to use up all the RAM, slow down and a few times caused it to crash. The process is https://autotrader.portal.com. How can i stop this from running? Every time it opens up by itself I have to force quit it to stop it slowing up and freezing.

  • I am trying to use boot camp but it keeps saying i have less than 10 gbs of free space when i have 20, How do i fix this?

My computer shows i have 24 gigs(image 1)but, it wont let me do the boot camp because it says i hve less than 10(image 2).

    buy a bigger hard drive.
you can't take away so much from Mac volume as to leave it with less than 20%/20GB and have a functional OS.
And you can't install Windows 7 with just 24GB.
you can't use free space that is fragmented and not contiguous.
you would have to get a larger SSD - OWC Macsales has SSD for the Air - or off load as much as possible to free up an add'l 40GB, at a minimum.
SSDs need free space of their own to function and allow for degradation, provisioning, garbage collection.
You have what OX Lion needs, maybe, but none to spare for another OS.
You might be able to run Windows in a VM like VirtualBox or Parallels and try to "get away" with it, but not natively.

  • New Time Capsule 2nd generation keeps slowing down internet. Firmware 7.6.3

Both ethernet and wireless connections, my time capsul ( 2nd gen, 7.6.3) slows down to 20 Mbits after a day or so. I then plug the Modem directly into my laptop, and the speed is 90+ Mbits. I then remove the cable and plug it back into the TC, and the speed jumps back up to 60+ Mbits. 24 hours later, I am back down to 20 Mbts. Ideas anyone? How to I get closer to the 90 Mbits?  I'd even be happy with the 60+ Mbits, but why the contant drop down to 20?

The OP does not have a modem router so this advice doesn't apply.

  • IMac keeps slowing down

My iMac is 1 1/2 years old. No trouble until a few weeks ago when it began slowing down after being on for a while. Saturday I got a phone call from someone named Peter. He was very hard to understand, but said I had downloaded a virus. He wanted me to turn on my computer so he could fix it. It was already on.
Since I was suspicious, I asked who he was with. He said something about (I couldn't understand the first part, even asking him to repeat it) ...Windows Operating System. I told him I don't have Windows and he said, "Oh, you have a Mac?" I said yes and he apologized for disturbing me. I checked this site which stated there are no Mac viruses at this time. Yet, I'm wondering if I do indeed have a virus which is causing the slowdown.
The computer starts up fine after having been shut down for a couple of hours or more, then begins slowing as I use it during the day. Eventually, it locks up completely and I have to turn it off using the power button. If I start it back up right away, it still runs slow.
One other thing - My inbox on Entourage shows I have one unread message after I have read every message showing.
    I need help!

    1. Don't give out any info at all to anyone over the phone unless you know who they are. Somewhere out there someone knows you have a Mac & where you live. It probably is nothing to worry about, but don't tempt fate.
    2. Don't install software from untrusted sources. There are no Mac viruses but anybody can make a trojan that will compromise your system if you are foolish enough to install it. Unless you have done that, it is extremely unlikely there is any malware on your Mac.
    3. To diagnose your slowdown problem, start by running Disk Utility's two tests (the repair permissions & verify disk ones). If they don't turn up anything strange, try running the Apple Hardware Test.
