Broke track pad  on my MacBook Pro  that is less then 18 months old . I was told it will cost  $439 to fix! Help!

I am shocked that my MacBook Pro is only 18 months old and it already needs such a costly repair. I thought this was going to be a better computer lesson learned the hard way about a $2000 lesson I will never buy another Apple computer again. I feel like I got a lemon. Any suggestions?

Grow up, get it fixed or buy a PC. We're not here to commiserate.

I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 It's possible that something is damaged, and Apple Hardware Test will help you finding it. Make sure you tick the option to run an extended test, and connect your Mac to the charger.
If your Mac came with DVDs, you have to insert the Mac OS X DVD to run Apple Hardware Test. As you haven't got the SuperDrive, you will have to buy an external optical drive

Realize that people that aren't having problems tend not to "brag" that they're doing fine.  Those that are having problems are usually very vocal.  So a lot of the "bad reviews" may just be those that had a problem, not necessarily the real experience of the millions of people that are doing just fine.
...and I'm afraid to download it and my computer is 2009, yours runs smoothly?
I'm running Lion fine on my 2008 MBP (4,1. 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB) and late 2009 Mini (2.0GHz C2D, 8GB.)  Minimum RAM for Lion is 2GB, but IMHO you really want 4GB.  If you have a lot of apps open (or have demanding apps like Photoshop,) then get more RAM if you machine can handle it.
Also, make sure the rest of your apps or drivers are up to date before upgrading.  Incompatible drivers for things like printers and such are what I've found to cause a lot of stability problems.

Try removing the Genius database.  In the "Finder" go to the /username/Music/iTunes/ folder and delete the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file. This may allow the program to launch again. This file will be recreated upon first use of the "Genius" feature.

  • I am getting electric current type shocks whilst using my track pad on my macbook pro. This happens when it is both plugged in to charge and also unplugged. I am left with a constant type pain of prickly pins and needles even when I am not using it.

I have recently bought a Macbook pro and have noticed that I am getting an electric current running up my fingers when using the track pad. This happens when it is charging but most worryingly it happens when it is not plugged in. It leaves me with pins and needles type feeling in my hand and arm even when I am not using it. Also when I sit it on my lap I get the same electrical current in my legs and down to my feet.
Surely this cannot be what I should expect with an apple product?, has anyone else experienced this?.
Yesterday I couldn't bare to use it the current was so strong.  I went out for the rest of the day and suffered with pins and prickly needles all day.

Two possible courses of action suggest themselves:
    (1) Return your computer immediately to point of purchase and/or authorized service provider.
    or
    (2) Consult with your doctor about your neurological symptoms.

  • Why can't I use my MagicMouse and my track pad on my MacBook Pro 17" simultaneously?

I bought my son a new MacBook Pro and I now have his older one (2008).  It still works like it was brand new but I found out, as I was personalizing it that the Magic Mouse and track pad won't work simultaneously.  It's either one or the other.  I have a 15" MacBook Pro about the same age and I can use them both together.  Is there a setting somewhere within the system preferences?

  • The track pad on my MacBook Pro is going crazy what can I do?

Yesterday I tried using my Mac book pro when I noticed that my track pad wasn't working it would either move really slow or not at all and then when it does move it goes all crazy and starts moving or clicking things with out me doing anything what can I do two days ago it was working fine and I have tried cleaning the track pad

The same happend to me, you need to call applecare or take it to the genius bar to have the trackpad swapped out. I hope you have applecare becuase the unibody macbooks will need the whole bottom chassis replacing which can be pricey.
Just a quick fix (it will only work for around 30 mins each time) untill you can take it in. Press all four corners of the trackpad down hard (without breaking it) then let go. Your trackpad should work for a short while.

  • The track pad on my Macbook pro isn't working well. The scrollbars are there but the only way it lets me scroll is with the arrows. It also doesn't let me highlight anything to delete it nor does it like me double click to open any documents. Help?

    Hi Miamel84,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If your trackpad is unresponsive, a good troubleshooting step is to reset the PRAM and SMC on your system. The following articles will show you how to do that.  Also see the final article in this post that addresses general issues with jumpy or erratic trackpads.
You can click on the links to see more details and screen shots.
I've highlighted the pertinent information for you below.

  • How do I back up my macbook pro information to an external hard drive.  I was told you just plug it in to the computer and because it is set up to work automatically, it should just do it automatically.  However, the clock is just circling top right?

How do I back up informtion on my Macbook pro to an external hard drive?  I was told all you need to do is plug in the hard drive to the computer, and it will back up automatically, which it is set to do.  But all that is happening is the clock a the upper right of the page is revolving and the clock by my vault on the left is revolving, but there is no information as to mega or giga being copied.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro Retina is in fact 2 months old?

I just got a brand new out of the box MBP retina Late 2013. It was a replacement for my old Early 2013 faulty MBP retina. I am very thankful to Apple because my previous MBP was a faulty mess.
I have 2 enquiries as to whether this new MBP has been used previously:
    1) The app "Battery Health" lists the MBP as being 2.1 months old and having 3 cycles of charge already. Is that consistent with this being an unused and new MBP?
    2) The MBP has come with Pages, Keynote and Numbers installed!! I thought that these were apps you had to pay for and my previous MacBook certainly did not come with them. Do MBP come with these apps free these days? I have just been told that the iWork suite is free and installed for MacBooks activated after September 2013. Which just leaves my first question I suppose!
I am just worried that it has been used and abandoned and I'll have to go through the whole process again of having a dodgy MBP.
    Thanks

From what I've heard and read the iWork apps aren't normally installed. But that might of been with systems bought right after the notice of those apps being available for free with a Purchase of a New Mac.
Apple's manufacturers product many units each day. Some sit for weeks or more waiting to be shipped out and or in the Apple warehouse waiting to be bought. I wouldn't worry about it and it seems the 3 cycle count is fairly normal with the Retina models.

  • Track Pad not working - MacBook Pro

    Hi
My cursor began to jump around one day and shortly after that stopped working altogether. No clicking or moving of the pad is doing anything at all. My Mac BookPro is no longer in warranty. Where am I best bringing it?

Here is the Apple support article on trackpads:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1449
Occasionally the battery on a MBP may expand and interfere with the trackpad operation.  Open the MBP and examine the battery to to see this may be a problem.
An Apple store genius bar is a good place to bring your MBP.  The evaluation will be FREE regardless of warranty status.  You then should know exactly what the problem is and then be in a position to make an informed decision.
    Ciao.

    Good Morning,
I'm afraid you have gone beyond the standard return policy and thus will not be able to return the product for a refund.
