BSOD in Windows XP after connecting a USB hard drive

Hi everyone!
I have a mid 2009 iMac i5. After plugging in an external hard drive I get a BSOD in Windows XP SP3.
I first installed Win XP using Bootcamp and later on I also installed Parallels 6.0
to avoid rebooting in order to get to Win XP. Windows running on Parallels displays BSOD as well
when a hard drive is plugged in.
Everything works fine under Mac OS X (latest version available).
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.
Lukasz

Fingers crossed we might be able to track down the cause of the problem by interrogating minidumps of the blue screens with Windows debugging tools.
So first we'd better check to see if your PC has been collecting minidumps of the crash.
Open My Computer, and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp" or just "(numbers-numbers).dmp".
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled on the PC, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Are there any minidumps about on the PC? If so, we'll go digging in them.
1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
2. Go "Start > All Programs > Debugging Tools For Windows > Windbg". Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug. The path will be:
SRV*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace" so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there that was generated at the same time as the Classic was plugged in.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it, as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps generated by USB-pluggings-in. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?

  • Can I Connect a USB Hard Drive Directly to the IX4-300D?

I need to copy large amounts of data from a USB hard drive to the IX4-300D. So can I connect the USB hard drive directly to the USB port on the IX4-300D?
If "yes", how does the USB hard drive show up in Windows so I can select the file to copy?

    Hi exceptionalht,
The USB ports are intended for external storage devices such as flash drives and USB hard drives. Once you connect the hard drive to the USB port, the device's content will show up as a new share in the Shares page. You should be able to map that share in Windows or have Storage Manager map it automatically.
To safely remove the external hard drive, go to the External Storage page and click the eject icon for that device.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Losing Connection To USB Hard Drive.

I bought a new 5th gen AEBS and installed it yesterday updating the firmware to latest version and enabling the 300mbps 5GHz access point.
I formatted a 2.5" USB hard drive to Mac OS Journaled and connected it via USB.
Last night I transferred GBs of data with no problems. However I copied my iTunes media over night, and this morning it stated that it lost connection to the drive.
I since cannot connect to the drive again without disconnecting the USB drive and reconnecting it.
This seems to be a common problem with no evident fixes. Has anyone got a reliable connection out of this device?
I was using a MacBook Pro 2010 on SL.
If not then I suppose I might send this back and get a dedicated NAS.

I just found this thread - I am not sure the energy saver option will apply to non 'local' hard drives, i.e. the hard drive connected to the AEBS.

  • Can I connect two usb hard drives to my time capsule?

    Dear all,
I have bought a powered usb hub to connect two usa hard drives to my 3rd generation time capsule, as it is written in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2421
I have formatted both hard drives, so now the file system is extended Mac OS (journaled). If I plug the usb hub to my laptop, I can access both hard drives. If I plug it to my time capsule, by no means I can access any disk. If I plug each hard drive directly to the time capsule, I can access each of them. I don't understand! what can be the problem? The file system is ok, the hub is powered and everything is working if I plug it to my laptop. Can anybody help me? Any idea? Thank you in advance!

A hub that works on a Mac does not necessarily work on a Time Capsule.. eg Some Belkin hubs do not work on TC even though they work on the Mac.. The TC having a small amount of ROM memory can only store drivers for a small selection of usb chipsets.. you need to buy a different powered hub..
What ones actually work with TC.. ?? Not sure.. google for success.
best usb hub airport (airport and TC are same thing)
This is coming up all the time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3787224?start=0&tstart=0
Your problem is finding the right one, because even like belkin ones, a 7port might work, because belkin are rebadgers they don't make anything.. so it depends which factory they come from.. for a consumer product like a hub they probably care more about the outside and packaging appearance than the chip used inside. And lets face it.. all they care about in the end is to deliver it for the cheapest price possible to make money out of it.

  • Copy my itunes library from desktop windows PC to an external USB hard drive

What is the easiest way to copy my Itunes library from a windows PC to an external USB Drive?

    How to move iTunes library

  • How do I run a program automatically upon connecting a USB hard drive?

    Hello,
I was wondering if it was possible, using Automator or something similar, to automatically have a program launch after a device, such as an external hard drive, has been mounted to the system?
For example, I store my iTunes library on an external hard drive due to it's size (~200GB). I would like to be able to have iTunes automatically launch when the external hard drive, containing my iTunes library, has been mounted to my MacBook Pro.
Is something like this possible and, if so, what is the best way to accomplish it?

There used to be sn automator action that might have gotten the job done. It was on http://automatorworld.com/ but I can't seem to find it now.
I haven't test this under Lion but there is a system preference pane called "Do Domething When" that should get the jeb done. http://www.azarhi.com/Projects/DSW/
I have taken the opposite approach. My iTunes library and I have the same problem if it has not been mounted when iTunes launches. I created an Automator app that mounts the music then launches iTunes. Try mounting the drive the launch Automator to create the following workflow.
    1. Connect to server and select the external drive.
    2. Us the Launch Application step to launch iTunes.
Unmount the external drive and test the workflow. If it works save the workflow as an app and use that to launch iTunes.

  • Problem connecting with USB Hard drive on Router since upgrade to Lion

Over the past year we have been slowly getting set up to have a hard drive with our photos networked so we can access from all home computers. We have a CineRAID hard drive storage tower w/one 2TB Seagate HD (allows for 4 hard drives). We have collected pictures from all computers onto the hard drive. Up until recently, we have had the system connected directly to one computer to allow transfer of files more easily. When I recently attached it back to the Netgear WNDR3700v2 router, I can see the drive (called ReadyShare, instead of the drive name "Photos & Videos") in the Finder, but I cannot access the drive; says "Connection Failed" and clicking brings up the box to connect as if to another computer.
I had set this up when we first got the hard drive in January and everything worked fine, i.e., I could see and access the pictures that had been transferred to the drive, without having to logon to the hard drive. The only thing that I know has changed is migrating my computer from Snow Leopard to Lion. Is there some new protocol for accessing this type system, or have I inadvertently switched/changed something else, that I no longer remember?

  • XP sp3 cannot see usb hard drive connected to airport extreme 802.11n

I have a sata drive that the airport utility recognizes. I attempted to follow the instructions from post HT1331 but no luck yet. I also reformatted the drive from ntfs to fat32 using vista but with the same result.
I found another post while writing this one which solved my problem. It turns out how I formatted the drive wasn't usable by AEBS.
Connecting Large USB Hard Drives to Airport Extreme
I needed to format the drive using the instructions found below.
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
After doing this and plugging in the drive I was able to use the drive intended. Since I had started the post I figured I would list the solution.
    Cheers!

I don't think two problem are related. Now, for PC, try to disable the firewall software if you ave one. Some firewall can block it, like for ex PC Tools firewall, or ZonaAlarm. Some of them you can configure to work with disk agent.

  • Transfering iTunes files to new computer using external USB hard drive

    Thought this could be useful:
If you want to transfer your complete iTunes library to a new computer preserving all your playlists and library information, but without using your iPod as a hard dive, or without burning a CD or DVD, you can do it by using an USB external hard drive following these easy steps:
    1) Quit iTunes
    2) Connect your USB external hard drive to your computer and acccess it thru My PC or Windows Explorer.
    3) Create two new folders in your external hard drive (you can name them LIBRARY Backup and PLAYLISTS Backup).
    4) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder.
    5) Open another Windows Explorer or My PC window; open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
    6) Copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the LIBRARY Backup folder you created in your external USB Hard Drive.
    7) Close both the LIBRARY Backup folder from your USB external hard drive and the iTunes Music folder.
    8) Open the PLAYLISTS Backup folder from your USB external hard drive
    9) From your iTunes folder, copy the iTunes Music Library.xml to the PLAYLISTS Backup folder.
    10) Close all the windows and extract your USB external hard drive from your PC ()
    11) Install iTunes in your new computer.
    12) Using Windows Explorer open the iTunes Music folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My documents\My music\iTunes).
    13) Connect the USB hard drive to your new computer and open it using another Windows Explorer window.
    14) Open the LIBRARY Backup folder and copy all of its contents (only the contents, not the whole folder) to the iTunes Music folder in your new computer. After the copying is complete, close this folder.
    15) Copy the PLAYLISTS Backup folder to you new computer’s desktop.
    16) Close Windows Explorer and extract USB hard drive.
    17) Open iTunes
    18) From the File menu, choose Import. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop and click Choose. The imported playlist will show only songs located on the computer's hard disk or external media.
    19) You can now delete the xml. file from your new computer’s desktop if you wish.

  • USB Hard Drive that Disk Utility says it can't unmount

I have a 93.2 Gb Hard Drive (from an old G4 PowerBook) inside an enclosure with USB connection. While trying to recover data from it using Data Rescue (on a G4 PowerBook), Data Rescue II hung. After restart, the USB Hard Drive can not be read at all. Disk Utility says it can't repair it or erase it because it can't "Unmount" the disk. What can I do with the USB Hard Drive?

try this: open system preferences/spotlight/privacy and drag that external into spotlight privacy then try Disk Utility.

  • Usb hard drive on extreme not showing in time machine

    Hi
I have connected a usb hard drive to my extreme but can not see it in time machine. I can see it with finder.
    Help please

Did you download the latest firmware for your Airport Extreme? When I first bought mine, Time Machine was not supported. A few weeks later a firmware update was released that allowed Time Machine support, and Time Machine worked fine for me after that.

  • XP Mounting USB Hard Drive

Hello - I am trying to connect my USB hard drive to Airport Extreme under Windows XP Pro (SP3), but am unable to successfully mount the hard drive. I have gone through all of the instructions via Apple's support documentation without success (I get an error msg stating the disk needs repair). Are there better instructions out there? Do I need to setup other system configs in XP in order to use the disk wirelessly? Thanks!

Yes, I did install the CD that came with the AEBSn, and have since updated the firmware, etc. I can access the utility, but the only thing that happens is it tells me the disk needs repair.
    The drive is NTFS formatted.
    Thank you for your reply!

  • HT1178 how to install a usb hard drive though air port time capsule

I am looking to connect a usb hard drive to my time capsule airport. The primary purpose of this drive is to create a shared drive between the three computers in the house, not for time machine. Is there any specific steps or procedures I need to know to make this happen? thanks.

Plug it in, click here, and follow the instructions. The drive needs to be formatted as FAT16, FAT32, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and may need to be connected through a powered USB hub.

  • CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine

    Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.

    Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:
