BSOD KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED on 10041 in KVM with OVMF

First, the crash dumps: http://1drv.ms/1GJxoRC (sorry about the non-English (Swedish) in there)
In my admittedly experimental setup that has so far been working unexpectedly well and stably, I started getting BSODs on launching a number of applications once I had updated to 10041. It is 100% reproducible and says KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED*.
Every time I start Spotify (latest version), the crash happens instantly. In fact, I even get the blue screen when I try to uninstall it or download and run the installer (simple way of reproducing). This is by no means isolated to Spotify. Dark Souls II always
crashes the same way about one second into the first screen, often with visual distortion, making the BSOD unreadable. I reinstalled Windows Preview to another partition, and experience exactly the same behavior. On build 9926 everything is perfectly fine,
but once I upgraded that to 10041, the problems were back. I then reverted the update, and it's all good. But I can go back and test things, as one of the partitions i still on 10041.
Anyway, unless those crash dumps have all the info one could need, some context on my setup might be useful. I run the preview in a VM, using KVM on Linux, with OVMF (essentially turns the VM into a UEFI machine). I've been using GPU pass-through,
passing my Radeon HD 6970 over to windows, plus a few USB devices. I thought that might have been the problem, but I've tried running the VM without passing it through, and the same thing happens anyway. Maybe that's not enough to rule it out...
The VM uses a physical SSD rather than a disk image, so I can actually boot straight into it when I boot up the computer! When I do that, I don't experience the blue screens.
* There's been one occurrence of SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, when starting Dark Souls II, but I don't have the dump from that.

Alright, never mind. 10049 fixed it! So thanks for the impossibly quick support, hehe!

  • [SOLVED] Windows Guest VM in QEMU with OVMF freezing on boot

I'm having some issues booting Windows 8.1 with ovmf. I've taken out the references to vga passthrough for debugging this issue. This is a fresh installation, I have a separate installation that works just fine (albeit bloated), and I don't know where the difference comes.
    The command I used:
    # qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 4G -cpu host -M q35 -balloon virtio \
    -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/ovmf_x64.bin \

    -drive file=/usr/share/virtio/virtio-win.iso,id=virtiocd,if=none -device ide-cd,bus=ide.1,drive=virtiocd
I have tried his with ovmf-svn and Gerd Hoffman's repository, both giving the same effect.
It starts to boot for a while, and then freezes at a point like this:
EDIT: When I take out references to the q35 chipset, including the ioh3420 device, it will boot.
EDIT 2: After I installed the driver for my nvidia card (the point of this from the beginning), I was then able to boot with q35 chipset again. Wahoo!

Oh, thank you so much. That fixed it!
You did not posted any boot error [...]
Well, I posted the screenshot ("output of the VM"), because I couldn't copy the text from the VM. And I guess I was too lazy to type... It contains the boot error.
Edit: In order to eventually help people find this, I'm typing the error partially, here:
    :: Mounting /run/archiso/cowspace (tmpfs) filesystem, size=75%...
losetup: cannot find an unused loop device
    :: Mounting '' to '/run/archiso/sfs/airootfs'

  • KVM with mini and out of box problem

#1 Just bought a refurbed mini, want to share kvm as I have in the past with a wintel laptop.
Anyone using a kvm controller with their mini? I've got a iogear with my existing wireless k/m and the mini doesn't like it very much. Sporadic mouse movements, and weird mouse type clicks happening when moving around menus(such as right click result on screen when hand isn't near the button).
I went to a wired mouse for a test as the kvm had a separate usb port for kybd and mouse...that hasn't completely solved the problem.
#2 I've got a 2nd problem which may be causing the keyboard issues. I unboxed my mini, started it and when prompted hooked up my old g4 mac as a target disk unit. The mini flawlessly transferred over all my email, programs, icon's, etc in a little under 2 hours. Rebooted and logged right in to my old environment! Very impressive. Patched it after that and it rebooted fine.
The other night, I turned it on, and the screen resolution was changed. Didnt think much of it thinking the kvm may be messing with it.
Two nights ago I checked my mail and walked away for a while..upon my return it locked. Held pwr key in until it shutdown and went to bed. Last night I turned it on, got the "Osx has recovered.." message. Cleared that and as soon as I opened mail it crashed again(getting the your computer has encountered a problem black box error..). Restarted tried my IM client...crash.... reboot, try firefox...crash.
I haven't tried booting and repairing disk permissions yet. Any other thoughts?
    thanks

I use a TrendNet KVM with my Mini and PC.
Empirically I've concluded that a wireless mouse is not a good idea with this setup; I use a wired USB mouse now.
I had to try a couple of KVM brands before I found a good fit. Even so, occasionally I get a key repeat from a single key press, but otherwise everything is fine.
My experience has been that any kind of PS/2->USB adapter used with a KVM is a bad idea. The fewer converters the better.
I'd recommend not using the KVM until you get your other issues with the Mini sorted out.
It is possible that migrating your settings from other Mac is causing some of your problems.

  • Urgent help in porting kvm with KNI and cygwin..

I am using kvm with cldc 1.0.4 and midp 2.0. And for using KNI I need to recompile whole of the KVM again after including the native code. I am doing this right now at windows 2000 platform, I can rebuild KVM using make %KVM_ROOT%\build\win32\and get no errors
But when I follow "KNI Programming Overview" in "KNI Specification",
I add(copy) the native method and Java code from "KNI Programming Overview" to the directoris which is
    ${KVM_ROOT}/kvm/VmUnix/src/Java_mypackage_HelloWorld.c
    ${KVM_ROOT}/api/src/mypackage/HelloWorld.java
    then I type
    C:\J2ME\CLDC\kvm\VmWin\build>kvm_j -classpath c:\j2me\cldc\api\src mypackage.HelloWorld
ALERT: Native method 'mypackage/HelloWorld::sayHello' not found
Anyone has experience on it? I totaly follow the Sun's KNI Specification but I can't get a correct output. What else thing I need to know that don't specify in the documents. What reason make this? I never rebuild (make ) my KVM correctly or any envirnoment need to be set
    thanks in advanced
    Eric

i tried the same like following with linux in linux respective directories
Before rebuilding the KVM, I modify the makefile (in ${KVM_ROOT}/kvm/VmWin/build/) by adding "Java_mypackage_HelloWorld.c" at the end of "SCRFILES = ..."
As I use Windows 2000 platform, I place my files like that :

    ${KVM_ROOT}/api/src/mypackage/HelloWorld.java

  • Surface Pro 3 BSOD KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED mrxsmb20.sys

    Hi
Have been having repeated BSOD's on my vanilla Surface Pro 3 i5 256 GB:
    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED mrxsmb20.sys
They only appear to happen when I am on the docking station.
I have done a clean "Recovery" from preserving user files once, and most recently a clean recovery of the device.
Windows Updates have been installed, and the November driver pack was downloaded (today) and installed for good measure.
I am using BlueScreenView from NirSoft but I can't see any other driver that might be causing the problem.
    Advice much appreciated.
    Thanks
    David

    Hi Hunter Group ,
I wonder if there is any luck that this issue has been resolved.
According to your description, please tell us dose this issue persist after you installed all updates of November packs?
Please make sure you have installed last update of your surface firmware for good measure:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=38826
In most cases, you will experience mrxsmb20.sys blue screen errors after you’ve installed new hardware or software.
Mrxsmb20.sys blue screen errors can be caused by a variety of hardware, firmware, driver, or software issues such like
Incorrectly configured, corrupted Windows device drivers, Virus or malware infection, hardware related to mrxsmb20.sys, Damaged or removed system files, damaged hard disk and memory (RAM) corruption.
Since this issue can be caused by installed third party software, the first thing to do is perform a clean boot see if the issue disappears.
Then You could conduct a Full Malware Scan of Your PC and run Windows System File Checker ("Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth") in Command Prompt with administrator permission. If no Virus or malware infection and the
Component Integrity is fine. Please check for Hard Drive Corruption ("chkdsk /f").
How to run “chkdsk” (Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8):
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Type "cmd" in the search box...  hit ENTER
    3. A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
    4. Type "chkdsk /f" and hit ENTER.
5."chkdsk" will begin scanning for hard disk corruption that could be causing mrxsmb20.sys STOP errors.
    6. Follow the on-screen commands.
If the issue persists you could check or upload your DMP log to help us find corrupt or incompatible drivers or where the memory corruption happens.

  • Enabled Hyper-V causes "System thread exception not handled" BSOD in builds 10041 and 10049

I had a Windows 10 TP build 9926 installation with Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition installed, when build 10041 was released Windows Update tried to install it but after restart it got BSOD with "System thread exception not handled" text and
reverted back to 9926 with error code 0xC1900101-0x40017. I tried update from ISO, got the same BSOD. Tried clean installation, it worked.
I decided to install software and restart the system after each installation and discovered that installing Visual Studio 2015 CTP6 caused BSOD after restart if and only if emulators were included. Installation of  Visual Studio 2015 CTP6 without emulators
and then installation of Tools for Windows 10 also caused BSOD with "System thread exception not handled" error after restart.
So I thought that it was Hyper-V related and disabled hardware virtualisation in BIOS settings. It worked, system successfully booted, but, of course, Tools for Windows 10 setup showed up and told me about fail in UAP for Windows Phone package.
So, my hardware is Gigabyte GA-A75N-USB3 motherboard with AMD A8-3870 APU with integrated graphics, Intel SSDSA2CW080G3 80GB SSD and 8 GB RAM.
Steps to reproduce are to enable "Virtualisation" item in BIOS settings, install Windows 10 Technology Preview Build 10041, install Visual Studio 2015 CTP6, install Visual Studio Tools for Windows 10 Preview, restart the system and
see blue screen with white text of description of "System thread exception not handled" error.

Same issue, MSI A75MA-G55 AMD Fusion Socket FM1 with A8-3850 APU, 16GB RAM.  Hyper-V worked in 9926, but broke in 10041 and remains broken in 10049.  I have found that if you get in this BSOD loop, you can boot to Safe Mode and Un-install Hyper-V
to recover.  10041 was an update to 9926, and 10049 was a clean install.

  • Windows update causing BSOD in my new B50-30 with DRIVER-IRQL error

Hi folks - I'm really hoping someone else has found a way to deal with a similar issue.
I bought a b50-30 about three weeks ago, and everything has been fine until the latest rounds of Windows updates. During the normal update blue screen, It got stuck (I gave it 24 hours just in case!) on "update 5 of 31", so I eventually had to force restart. That led to a blue screen with the annoying smiley emoticon for a frown, and it claimed to be "collecting some error I fo and then we'll restart for you" but it showed a 0% progress reading, which didn't change during the 12 hours I (patiently) let it run. The specific error message was DRIVER-IRQL-NOT-LESS-OR-EQUAL. Eventually I force-restarted a second time and went into Safe Mode, and the updates appeared to restart and make progress. Eventually the computer started normally again. Victory?
All was fine for a week, and then the bloody thing got stuck on the next round of infernal Windows updates, this time not getting past "28 of 61 updates". When I force restart, I get the BSOD with the same DRIVER-IRQL error message and the same 0% progress reading that won't make progress no matter how long I leave it. Unfortunately, this time, opening in safe mode won't work for me, as it merely brings me back to the identical BSOD screen. Now I have no way to restart the bloody thing at all (other than going for a full recovery, which I'm hoping to be able to avoid). I also tried the "refresh" function, which went through the percentage progress fully, but resulted in the same BSOD. Interestingly, it won't allow me to "restore".
Does anyone have any brilliant advice, other than throwing it out a window and never buying either Lenovo or Windows again?
    Thanks all
    EJS

    hi Arie,
    Welcome to the Forums.
If you;re able to see the SSD in the BIOS and/or see it under Disk Management while using the stock HDD then you may want to consider the following:
    1. Boot from the stock HDD and update the BIOS
    BIOS Update Utility - Ideapad 305-15IBY, Lenovo B40-30, B50-30, B50-30 touch, E40-30 Laptops
    2. Update the SSD's firmware to  MU02 (latest as of this writing).
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/support-ssd-firmware
    3. Using the stock HDD, connect the Crucial SSD and convert the volume to MBR first to see if there's a compatibility using the drive as GPT.
If none of the above methods works then there's likely a compatibility issue with the SSD's controller and/or the BIOS (similar to this thread). In this case, consider using a different brand (e.g., Samsung) and observe.

  • KVM with DVI and mini DP compatibility? old and new mac pro to one monitor?

i need to buy one of these to replace a belkin model that i think may have failed (either that or it is my video card) and i just started to wonder if i should spend the money on a KVM switch instead. basically i am buying this converter to TEST if my current adapter is not working.
    http://www.kanex.com/c247dl
i am assuming that getting a KVM switch will be able to test this in the same manner but also give me the added option of /switching/ between my 2006 and the newer 2012 model.
i am having a bit of a hard time navigating the IO gear website and my terminology searching may not be optimal either. can anyone help me with this please? presumably i need a "mini DP and DVI KVM switch"?
    THANKS

OK. so for an extra hundred dollars (compared to buying a converter) i can get this 5770 video card that has two mini DP ports and which will be compatible with my cinema display is that right? then i am guessing i can buy a mini DP KVM switch if i decide to keep the computer (assuming it solves the video problem). does that sound about right?

  • Display setup using kvm with a pc?

    Hello All,
I currently work doing some design work with an iMac, but for some programs for work I have to also use a PC. I would like to set up another monitor, but since there are already two monitors on my desk, I would like to use the one currently connected to my PC. After some research I believe that a KVM switch would be the best thing for me. Since I learned some about them while I was researching, I saw that you can use the same mouse and keyboard between the two. Can I still do this between my mac and PC and still have the dual monitors on both?
Essentially, I want dual monitors. One PC, one iMac, one mouse and one keyboard to save on desktop space in the office. Is this possible? If so, what should i purchase and how do I connect them?
    Thank you.

    Yes.
    would it be compatible?
    Yes.
Anything special I need to do to connect it?

  • Single screen KVM with dual screen setup

So here's the deal. I have dual 20" cinema displays hooked up to my Quad. I took one of the displays and hooked it up to my IOGear DVI KVM (http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=product&Item=GCS1764) so that that display could be shared with my Powerbook G4 and my Core Duo MacMini. However, when I change ports on the KVM, the secondary display "disappears" from the PowerMac and it starts freaking out. Sometimes it will just try to detect the screen (constant signal flickering) for a minute and then give up and operate as a single screen system but most of the time it tries to detect the screen for 2+ minutes until it just crashes the whole computer and then I have to reboot the PowerMac.
    Any ideas?

Removing pin 16 on the DVI cable to the PoweMac might help. See the last item in: <http://www.gefen.com/kvm/support/faq/>

  • Sharing KVM with iMac

Greetings folks. I'm stuck in the Windows world and am looking to replace my desktop with an iMac. Today, my employer requires a windows based build, and I have a requirement to see the consoles of several machines at the home office.
I've learned that there is not a display input on the iMac, but was wondering if anyone had any KVM like strategies to share? Any particular software? I'm trying to avoid going down the KVM over IP route due to cost.
    Would love to hear suggestions!

No, that is actually a great idea and solves most of my problems. Couple of issues...
    1) For security purposes, my laptop has a firewall on it that I cannot override. I can tell my work laptop to connect to a service that would allow me to share remote control to it, but I can't just connect in.
    2) The only other thing would be to try and figure out how to get to some of my other console devices (linux-based). Maybe I could enable them all to talk over RS232 and console to those directly via a console server, or just keep a spare monitor around in case I need it (use the Mini DVI out on the iMac and hook that into a switch box in case).
I was looking at Synergy, but have not tried it yet.

  • Using a KVM with an iMac and Tower Mac

I have searched thru this topic and others without finding anything, so, I am posting this question. If it has been answered already please forgive me for posting again.
I have a blueberry 333 iMac that I would like to use with a KVM that allow me to also use a B&W tower mac too. I know that the connector is not a standard VGA connector, but, I think I can either buy or make an adapter. It appears that the monitor connector on the iMac is a match to the PC Gameport connector.
Anyway, assuming I can get such an adapter, is is possible to use the iMac in the way that I have described? Thanks!

If you mean that you want to use the iMac's internal monitor as a monitor for your PowerMac, then sorry but no. There's no way (at least no practical way) to do that. The KVM could, of course, switch the keyboard and mouse.
BTW, for future questions, I'd suggest you try asking in the iMac (CRT) area. This forum is for the new Intel-based iMac and so perhaps not the most likely place for you to get a quick and accurate response.
    Good luck.

  • Repeated BSODs in my brand new X230 (with Windows 8)

    Hello
I purchased the new X230 in early December and then went on vacation (without it) for two weeks. Thus this is really my first week using it. I've had NINE blue screens of death already, each with the term dpc_watchdog_violation. Further, my Citrix remote work-enabled system shuts down on this computer, making this computer just about useless for work purposes. I'm worried this is a lemon -- how can I have so many crashes in the first week of use? The summary of the crash events is below. Has anyone had similar problems? Has anyone had problems with rtwlane.sys on their X230s?
Thanks for your thoughts and time,
    ML

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi, MLinBerlin
I did some research on the issue on Microsoft's website and found this page explaining what a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION is. According to Microsoft, this error is normally caused by either hardware or a driver of associated hardware. For this reason, I would recommend making sure that all the drivers and BIOS are up to date to rule out any software reasons for this issue. All drivers for your system can be found here. It could possibly be hardware, but let's hope that some updates will get it running smoothly.
Good luck, and let me know how it goes
    Adam
