BT infinity 'super fast' fibre optic, what a joke!...

ridiculous, just ran BT's own test your speeds, I'm getting 15.45 download, 2.90 upload and 41.50 ping (whatever that is), I knew internet was slow but what a joke, that's when it's working, it flashes orange more than is blue, this is the second modem to do this (and they're sending a third!)
not quite the at least 51 download speed was promised by BT when signed up to the super duper mega fast Infinity2 fibre optic package, I'm connected to the DSL not the WAN, will this affect it, trying to talk to their CS is a joke, they're obviously reading from a booklet and have no idea when ask about that, in fact they ignore it completely!!
anyone else getting this?  it's the home hub 5, my socket wasn't changed like was told it would have to be neither? :s
am seriously tempted to cancel the DD and send the hubs back to BT with a note saying as haven't provided what said would you can shove it, seriously, telling folks will get super fast and signing up to the most expensive package got...then delivering a sloppy second service, I'm not prepared to pay over £40 a month for, it won't even connect to my son's laptop neither, says is 'too far' we live in a bog standard house, not a 30 bedroom mansion, his bedroom is right above the modem, he can't get much closer unless moves on top of the thing!

How far are you from your cabinet, well you may have action to cancel if needs be as im told be the engineers that visited me they could leave you with 15Mbs but i see on your speed test 16Mbs is you acceptable limit, have they done anything outside of the property ie used a different pair?
When i had mine installed it would just about reach 20Mbs from a 45.9Mbs i was told i would get, anyway the sixth engineer switched the pair and got a hoist for poll to my house as it was a non climbable one and found some doggy connections which saw 15Mbs freed up.

  • Fibre Optic on Portland was in time for the Olympi...

Originally the exchange was showing as having fibre optic in time for the olympics, March 2012. But in the last few weeks the date now showing is December 2012.
Is this a permanent delay, or is the date likely to return to March 2012 seeing as Portland is hosting the sailing events of the olympics?
I'm concerned that if fibre optic isn't installed then the existing broadband will be strangled with the increase useage of the media set-up here during the olympics.

I don't know what that means?
All i know is when i put my telephone number in to the BT Infinity checker i get this message "Sorry, you're not currently able to get BT Infinity. This may be because your area has not been enabled yet, or your individual line does not support super-fast broadband. Register your interest and we'll let you know if this changes."
When i look on samknows it says FTTC should be in your area by 31/12/2012 - when previously it stated 31/03/2012.
Though looking at this news article http://www.btplc.com/ngb/News/London2012fibre.htm i'm expecting this means fibreoptic broadband for the village (less than 100 metres from my house) in time and during the olympics, then available to residents when the olympics are all over. Does this sound right?
Thanks for the replies thus far btw

  • Fibre Optic rollout/availability

    Hi there,
I have a few questions about the fibre optic rollout in my area, and the local authority on the matter (ConnectingCheshire) has been useless is helping me so far.
The Alderley Edge exchange was upgraded to Fibre Optic a few months ago during "Phase 1 deployment" and looking at the rollout plan found here (http://www.connectingcheshire.org.uk/media/797285/Cheshire-East-map.pdf) my area should be following soon after. We are in the slightly darker orange area south of Alderley Edge and north of Monks Heath Crossroads.
So, Cabinet 1 which we are connected to appears to be fibre enabled but we can't get it yet - I guess the cables haven't been laid but "Phase 2 deployment" should have started by now and we have not heard anything while the map says we should be connected between Phase 1 and 2. Do you guys at Bt know what's going on? Are there construction problems or are we just being left in the dust to twiddle our thumbs with our measly 1mb/s broadband?
I hope you can help explain what is going on.
    Thanks!

I can confirm that PCP1 on the Alderley Edge exchange has linked and installed with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet and is accepting order for FTTC.
The FTTC DSLAM cabinet for PCP1 (Alderley Edge exch.) is located adjacent to Yew Tree Cottage, Artists Lane, NETHER ALDERLEY, MACCLESFIELD, SK10 4UA
@Greenlandys, do you know how far away you are from the above location? As if your approx. 1.5/2Km away then you may not be able to get FTTC fibre broadband as you are just too far away from the cabinet.
Are you able to posts the results (including exchange, cabinet info and service table) from http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl
Just remember to edit out your cabinet number before posting.
If you are too far away and that Connecting Cheshire BDUK aren't going to do more work in your area to enable you to get a fast broadband service, then unfortunately there isn't much you can do at the moment.
There is a service (though not currently enabled for your cabinet) where you can get Fibre to the Premises on Demand (FTTPoD) though it could costs you thousands.

  • Why call it "fibre-optic broadband"?

I've always wondered why BT would choose such a misleading term for Infinity.
Why on earth would they call it fibre-optic broadband? This implies that fibre comes to the customer's house, which is of course not true. The misleading effect becomes worse when they refer to the "fibre-optic router" (the Home Hub) - good luck trying to convince the BT engineer who comes to install the service that it is not a "fibre-optic router" but a bog standard Ethernet router. And of course same goes for the Openreach modem - it's a VDSL2 modem, nothing to do with fibre-optics.
Sure, fibres go up to the street cabinet, and they are welcome to mention it. But the way they market it just makes it misleading for the laypeople and for their own engineers too.
Further down the line, how are they going to market FTTH when it arrives? Fibre-optic broadband again? But we already have that
    Very weird indeed.
They could just market it for what it is, a VDSL2 service.

  • BT Fibre Optic Query

Hello, we currently have a BT Home-Hub 4 and the fastest download speed up-to-date we've had is just under 1mb/s. We believe this isn't good enough... At the moment we don't have fibre optic installed in the area, and it would be great to hear if there will be a chance of actually getting one installed.... The address of the area we live in is:
    Cypress Gardens
    Longlevens
    Gloucester
    Gloucestershire
    GL2 0RB

    Hi Creature_face
The Fastershire Fibre Broadband Scheme is being rolled out, done and managed by the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire councils in partnership with Openreach so BT Retail (a communication provider/ISP whom operates this forum) does not have much say as to when and if you will be able to get fibre broadband (FTTC or FTTP or equivalent) as that is up-to Openreach, Herefordshire Council and Gloucestershire Council.
Your postcode area is connected to PCP 129 on the GLOUCESTER exchabge, and as already been stated has not yet been upgraded with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet, therefore fibre broadband, such as BT Infinity, is not yet available in your area. Your area is estimated a adsl broadband speed of up to 2mbps.
As part of the Fastershire BDUK fibre broadband programme your postcode area comes under area 4.
The rollout of fibre broadband in this area (Area 4) as part of the Fastershire project is due to start on 30th September 2014.
Fastershire expect the majority of work to finish by 30th September 2015. Further work to ensure all premises have access to faster broadband with a minimum of 2Mbps is expected to be completed by December 2015.

  • Bt infintity available with exisiting fibre optic?...

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me, after having lots of problems over the last year with my standard phone line causing internet connections problems with intermittant noise problems..I was wondering if its possible to switch to BT infintity even though as the Doncaster north area isnt yet shown as being available.
The reason why I'm asking is our whole estate was wired for cable up a number of years ago I believe for a Cable & wireless service (which now is currently being used by Virgin Broadband). Would this likely be the same is what is used by BT infintity? are cable and fibre optic the same?
Our house is connected up to the cabinet, and the two internal connection boxes are still in place though disconnected as we went back to BT.
If it was possible to use this connection I would be looking to transfer my broadband and phone service to BT infinity..
Can BT use existing cable or or do they only use infintity with cable they've laid themselves?
My post code is DN5 8NH and the cable cabinet is located about 60 yards away on the street corner if thats any help..
    thanks,
    Darren

    Hi darren.
Sorry, you can only have Infinity with a BT telephone line, connected to a BT Fibre cabinet.
If as you say Doncaster North is not fibre enabled , then unfortunatly Infinity is not available to you.
If you want to post a BT speedtest results and Router stats, then maybe someone on here can suggest something.
Can you try the quiet line test. Dial 17070 then option 2 . The line should be quiet. It is best done with a corded phone if possible.
If only cordless phones are available, then you might hear a slight hum.
If there is any noise, then report a phone fault to 151 . Please do NOT mention broadband.

  • Vodafone Sure Signal and SKY Fibre Optic Broadband

Please help, I have had no Mobile Phone signal for over 6 weeks on four mobile phones at home (which we pay over £150 a month for!) including my two teenage daughters phones who are beside themselves!!My Vodafone sure signal box was working fine (for past two years or more)but stopped working when we switched to SKY Fibre optic broadband from regular SKY broadband I have spoken to Vodafone and SKY for many many hours but still no signal. I'm tempted to ditch both SKY and Vodafone and start fresh with BT!!, this would be such a shame as been with both companies for over 15 years now I have no idea what I need to do to fix this, we have tried Port Forwarding but still no signal. Please help, I am in a mobile blackspot and its driving me cand the family mad.

Although not specifically about Sky Fibre, this (although a bit technical) is an interesting read (in particular the post at 21-Oct-14 10:41:23 advising to de-register the SS via the VF website, wait 30 mins then re-register the SS using a different postcode and if no luck contact VF and ask them to reset the SS from their end). For what it's worth, the Three Home Signal Box works fine over Sky Fibre without any port forwarding or any nonsense - just plug and go - worth knowing if you should decide to switch mobile providers!

You sure your mac ethernet port works.
Give them a call.  Verify that they only support windows for coniguration of router.  Ask them about future support. If  they have heard of the ipad.  Ask if they plan on supporting a web browser interface. Ask about their sanity. My $5 router supports a web browser interface.
You could get a cheap wifi router with ethernet ports and with a web browser interface.  Connect you mac to you el cheap router.  Connect your el cheapo router to the eircom router.  Note: Apple routers have a propriety interface too and unless you have a new Mac best to avoid.
Could they switch you to a router that supports a web browser interface?
Get a friend with a windows laptop and ask to come over to get things working.
Internet support is standardized.  You mac should be able to access the internet through the router.
What is not standardized is how you configure your router.
Unbelievably, eircom_799  referenced by Neville Hillyer only supports windows for configuration.

  • Gmail faults after change to fibre optic modem

    Hello there,
Hope someone can help me out with this. Since modem change from ADSL to Fibre Optic i get constant error for my gmail account that says "Too many simultaneous connections. (Failure)". I understand that this is because i probably have too many devices logged into the google account, but the weird thing is i did not have this problem before.
My modem is a Alcatel-Lucent I-240W-A connected to the 2TB Time Capsule. I tried various mail clients, as OSX Mail became unusable. I now use Postbox which did its best in the beginning but after a month it started to drop again and again. Besides reporting "too many simultanious connections" it sometimes says my password is not correct and it cant login. My phone will do the same once in a while ("Wrong password for Gmail, cannot login") and give me options to change settings or retry. Both being on the same Wifi network (TC 5Ghz).
I have access to the actual modem, for if someone has a way to perk settings.
    Many thanks.

The always helpful Mr. Pastenague, thank you.
    Ok, here goes.
Gmail on any browser works perfect. No drops, no "yellow alert bars", ..nothing. All client connections are IMAP, indeed, and no special settings other than general port settings (465), SSL is on, password is active and where it says User Name the macbook settings have the actual username where phone keeps it blank ("optional"). Funny thing is, the iOS mail client has almost no issues. Maybe once a day it cant login to gmail where the osx has trouble over 50 times a day.
The ISP modem configuration does not have any IPv6 setting available. Copying what i do see:

  • Mac OS X- 10.6.8 -fibre optics / TC problem

Not computer savvy enough for this one.  Just switch from an ethernet connection for internet to wireless (fibre optics).  Now internet does not function when time capsule is plugged & working wirelessly as in the past.
Solution to date has been to disconnect Time Capsule to have Internet work.   How do we get both to work simutaneously?
Have direct wired Time Capsule to computer but internet still does not function.
    Advanced thanks for any help.

I am not at all sure how your internet works.. fibre is normally delivered over ethernet.
Anyway I am going to need some more explaination of how the TC is connected.
And what mode you have it running in. Do you get internet direct to the computer by wifi from some other router then?? And the TC is not connected at all?
You should still plug the TC into the fibre router by ethernet if that is possible. If not you can setup dual connection.. internet via wifi and TC via ethernet direct to the computer but that means only that one computer has access to it.
See the information in this thread.. I gave a whole series of screenshots on how to do the setup.

  • WLC HA Failover on L2 Fibre Optic WAN

    Hi there,
I am just wondering if the below scenario works, if the L2 Fibre Optic Wan link is down between the two DCs. Please refer to attached diagram.
    ======================================================================
The Fibre link is L2 link, meaning that the VLANs are spanning between the 2 DCs.  HSRP is being used on all VLANs and DC1 being the primary active interface for all VLANs. In the event of the L2 Fibre Link failure, the VLAN interfaces on the respective core will become active, providing gateway access for all VLANs.
The WLC HA pair is between the DCs via the L2 Fibre link and  the redundant port communication happens via the Fibre link.  WLC in DC1 is the Active box and the WLC in DC2 would be in “Standby hot” mode.
When the L2 Fibre  fails, the HA Primary box in DC 1 will detect that its lost communication to the standby box(via both redundant port and network) and will still continue to function in active state. The HA Secondary box in DC2 will detect that the Primary failure(via both redundant port and network) and transition itself to Active state. In this scenario when the L2 link is down, both WLC would be in active – active state.
Upon the link coming back online, the wlc WOULD BE SYNCED and goes into active-standby state.
    ===========================================================================
Would the above scenario work, as I am unable to find any documentation describing about WLC HA setup which can run in “ACTIVE-ACTIVE” state.

The redundant ports are to be connected via the core switch(on same VLAN )at the respective DCs.
I doubt if this will work.
    Redundancy Port
This interface has a very important role in the new HA architecture. Bulk configuration during boot up and incremental configuration are synched from the Active WLC to the Standby WLC using the Redundant Port. WLCs in a HA setup will use this port to perform HA role negotiation. The Redundancy Port is also used in order to check peer reachability sending UDP keep-alive messages every 100 msec (default timer) from the Standby WLC to the Active WLC. Also, in the event of a box failure, the Active WLC will send notification to the Standby WLC via the Redundant Port. If the NTP server is not configured, a manual time synch is performed from the Active WLC to the Standby WLC on the Redundant Port. This port in case of standalone controller and redundancy VLAN in case of WISM-2 will be assigned an auto generated IP Address where last 2 octets are picked from the last 2 octets of Redundancy Management Interface (the first 2 octets are always 169.254).
What you are proposing to do defeats the true purpose of HA SSO.  So you depend entirely on a switch and if your fibre cuts, you are gone.  Both WLC goes into Active-Active.  What you are proposing to do is NOT what is intended for HA SSO.  You might as well turn HA SSO off.
Besides, with your setup, you don't need a Layer 1 issue.  All you need is something as simple as a STP loop and *BOOM*, WLC will go into Active-Active.
You might be able to get away with this if, you might say, you connect Redundant Ports (RPs) to fibre optic media converter.  As long as there is nothing in between both converters then this might even work (as long as either one of the media converters don't loose power).
Can you also specify what kind of WLC/WiSM are you planning to use?  This design of yours doesn't call of a WiSM-2, does it?
