Buffers/cache too big?

Conky and gnome-system-monitor reports different size of free memory then top and free.
IE: conky and system-monitor reports 750MB used on 2GB system
    free and top reports:
Mem:                     2049268    1408780     640488          0     104160     530168
-/+ buffers/cache:                     774452    1274816
Ok, when I substract total memory used with buffers/cache I get a value near the one that system-monitor reports...
And funny thing is that reports of virtual memory and resident memory per process with top and gnome-system monitor are realy high
20   0  505m  37m  16m S    0  1.9   0:05.39 nautilus
20   0  652m  89m  26m S   11  4.5   8:49.81 exaile
20   0  230m  33m  16m S    4  1.7   0:03.02 gnome-system-mo
I dont think these values are normal...

The value system monitor reports seems to be more or less the same as free -/+ buffers/cache, which makes sense. In fact buffers+cache can't be to big: Linux uses free memory to cache data to improve system performance, the alternative would be leaving the memory empty, which would be quite useless. Should the memory used for caching be needed by some program it will be freed and given to that program. There are lots of articles on the net explaining this behaviour in detail, i.e.:

  • Buffer Cache too big?

    Hello Oracle community!
I'm having issues because of my current SGA size on a Win 32-bit platform, its measures are normally on 6,811,549,696 bytes. There was another database administrator before me but he left the company, his instructions were that he setup this size because that time RAM memory was not the problem.
The OS' parameters are set to read the entire 8GB RAM.
If I set a SGA_TARGET to around 6GB, will I only have -800mb on my db and no problems at all? Is there any way to check things better than just set a SGA_TARGET and pray?
    Thank you very much!

Illustrator files on CC are taking 25-30 min to save and when opening them takes the same amount of time. on Mac. Often when opening the file the rainbow wheel comes on. How do I fix this as it is becoming a hassle having to waste my class time waiting for the file to open, and then having illustrator shut down and not respond because the file is too big

  • The offset in the file is too big"? Other than, hey it's FAT formatted, etcetera!

Does anyone have an answer for "The offset in the file is too big" error while creating a file using QT API "writeToFile"?
I mean something other it's FAT formatted, not enough space, et cetera. Anyone?

First how much free space do you have on your boot drive.  For normal use it's recommended to have a minimum of 10 GB free space.  If you use iDVD up that to 20-25 GB.  Lots of cache and swap space is needed.
Create the slideshow in iPhoto, set the disiplay size ratio to 4:3 and export it out of iPhoto at the medium or large size.
Open a new project in iDVD and add the QT file to the iDVD menu being careful to avoid any dropzones.
With a 90 minute slideshow you can use a single layer DVD disk. iDVD doesn't care about the file size of the media added to a project, only the playing time of the project, including menus.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
You shouldn't try to create the slideshow in iDVD with still photos if the number of still photos is larger than 99.  That creates a pause or stall when playing back on many set top players.

  • You Tube Player Size Too Big in Firefox by default

I recently experienced that the You Tube player automatically became large.
The standard size for YouTube videos seems to have changed from their old standard into the size that used to be halfway between normal and fullscreen.
That is WAY too big, and it's actually disgusting to look at with 360p and below videos. The vast majority of videos look like crap when they're stretched out.
There is a new button, "centered player," where the old "large player" button used to be. Clicking on it will center my enormous window, then that button displays "default player," which brings me back to this large, uncentered player.
This is happening with Firefox, with IE working fine.
Although I am technically incompetent I tried a few suggestions:
    Remove all cookies
Hit Ctrl+Shift+K and insert the code below in console:
    document.cookie="VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE=; path=/; domain=.youtube.com";window.location.reload();
However, I am getting the following messages:
Use of getAttributeNodeNS() is deprecated. Use getAttributeNS() instead. util-service.jsm:590
Use of getPreventDefault() is deprecated. Use defaultPrevented instead.
And it is not working, back to same Large Player….
Hopefully Mozilla can do something to fix this.
    Thanks!

You said that you removed the cookies. Now

  • Scanning: The image size is too big. Please reduce the image height, width, resolution, scaling or output type.

    Good Day.
I have recently discovered an issue with scanning.  I have tried scanning straight from the printer, through image capture, and through preview.  All yeilding the same results since they are essentailly kicking off the same scanning applet.  I can scan a jpeg formatted file as long as I applet is in the "Hide Details" mode.  If I click on the "Show Details" button, which I need to do to scan to PDF, I immediately receive an error stating: The image size is too big. Please reduce the image height, width, resolution, scaling or output type.
I'm currently using an HP C5180 printer.   The most recently installed software was Adobe Digital Editions (I installed this to read an on-line e-book).  Not sure if there is any correlation.    Thanks for any help.

    Hello Sig
The scanner works with a Windows computer, which proves the device is functional at a cursory level. The drivers are now distributed by Apple and this is an Apple computer. There is no scanning software provided by HP. HP's answer is that Mountain Lion takes care of all of this.  I anticipate that some setting or driver was somehow tweaked since the scanner had been working with Mountain Lion until a few days ago.  The device in question is an Apple product. So, I'm pretty confident that I'm in the right place.

  • Aperture Library too big

My only Aperture library is too big (almost 1TB) and slow to open. I would like to move older projects (2005-2009) into a 2nd new library (aka Archive Library) to another internal HD and continue to use the existing library for projects in 2012 and later.
I am assuming that the reduced sized original library will free up the space on the HD and open faster. My questions are:
    1. How do you move older projects (en mass) from Library A to Library B? Assuming A & B are on separate internal HDs
    2. Will this speed up accessing Library A?

Thank you for suggesting the use of folder. This will definitely help save time once I figure out the new set up.
I am running Aperture on Mac Pro (specs below):
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 2
      Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
      Memory: 14 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
When I first started using the system, it was fast and as I have added projects, its starting to slow down a bit. The problem is not just the sluggish performance, it's also capacity as explained below.
The HD configuration is Mac HD 500GB for OS and apps of which 207.96 GB is available.
The three additional internal HDs. The first named HD2, size 1TB for the Aperture Library which is 926.99 GB with ONLY 72.87 GB available. All the images, masters, managed and referenced reside here. As you can see, I have to find more disk space. To keep things simple I don't have any smart albums and filters. The RAM is 14 GB.
HD3 is alo 1TB. All is available for the "new" library. I created a new Aperture Archive Library and moved 2 smaller projects into this to test if it frees up memory on HD2 and it doesn't. Data indicates that transferring does not free up any memory in HD2 while taking up additional memory in HD3.
The internal drive HD4 (1.5TB) is for the Main Vault which is about 935GB. Still available 566GB.
There are three External HDs. LaCie I (2TB) has 1TB of video. My plan is to archive this Video on a off-line HD and repurpose LaCie I as a back up to the Main Vault.
LaCie II (2TB) is for Time Machine back up. At present, the Time Machine back up is 1.4TB
Finally, for now, I am using a EXT HD (2TB) as a back up for the Main Vault. Once I off load the Video files from LaCie I and use it as a back up for Main Vault, I will use this HD for off site storage.
As you can see, the current system is kludgy but has worked up to now. I shoot RAW and some projects are quite big. If you have suggestions for a robust and easily expandable system, I will appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

  • OutOfMemoryException because Image is too big

    hi,
I'm trying to learn java by devoloping a simple 2D-action-game. Now I want to draw the the ground of the game-world (or the map) on an image, in order to be able to copy the piece of the image on the screen, on which the player is currently looking.
My problem is, that createImae() (used in a JComponent) throws an OutOfMemoryException, because the map seems to be too big. How can I deal with this problem? Is there a way to not load the whole image into the cache, but to save it on hard-disk?
    thanx

Objects are stored on the heap. The default heap size is 64 MByte. If your image is bigger than that you can increase the heap size when your program is started by specifying a comand line parameter.

In iPhoto on your Mac select Export and you will have the option to select a size for your photo.
In iPhoto for iOS this capability is not there. I use PhotoForege2 on my iPad to resize my photos to meet the requirements you describe.

  • Saving animated gif error - canvas size too big?

    Hi,
i have been asked to create an animated gif which has a snow effect in the background. The animation runs pretty well using the pattern style to move the animated snow down. The problem is when I try to export the animation the save for web dialogue window freezes and I can't quit photoshop. I have tried to make the canvas (image size) smaller and it works.
Is there a memory problem with creating animations in Photoshop if the document size is too big, im running a 3000x1000px at 72dpi
TThe animation would be used on a web app, which a script could probably do a better job, but I need to try this first.
    thanks
    lister

Something is very wrong here. The point behind using GIFs is that they are small and OK to put on a Web site.
First thing: forget all about PPI - this has absolutely no relevance to Web/screen images; it is only used for printing. You need to think about the pixel size.
So, how big in pixels are your starting images?
How big do you want the resulting GIF to be? Again, you have to decide in pixels, as the viewing size will depend upon screen resolution of the person looking at it. You can use a notional PPI of 70-100 to guess how big it will be in inches, but that's all it is - a guess.
Is this getting you going in the right direction?
I cannot resist commenting that I hate almost all animated GIFs as they reduce Web site usability so much.

  • When I open my iPad the page is too big for the screen and won't shrink down. The keypad has also become very 'sticky'

Recently when I open any apps the pages are too big for the screen. They shrink when pinched but immediately become bigger again. It's very difficult to scroll too. The keypad has become very sticky. Missing letters and spaces when I type and needing to tap the keys much harder than usual

I have the exact same problem, I think.  I was on my iPad 3's home page swiping R-L to locate a certain icon when all of a sudden the screen appeared to get HUGE.  So big I could only see one or two icons.  I couldn't even turn it off to try a reboot because after I pushed the sleep/wake button, I couldn't find the red slide bar.  I finally just had to wait for the battery to die, then recharge it, and it looked normal again.  I also spoke with several friends who haven either iPads or iPhones, and they've all had this happen to them.  I checked my accessibility settings, and Zoom was already off.  So what is causing this problem for so many people, and what can we do to prevent it?  Please help.

  • When doing a second "Organize Library" cuz the first was too big, will iTunes recognize what's already copied over?

I'm stuck with a large folder of music on my PC in My Music folder. And I used "Organize Library" in iTunes but it didn't copy everything over because the amount of music was too big. I've deleted the original copies of music outside of iTunes to open up more space and was wondering if I do a second "Organize Library" if it will recognize that some of the music has already been copied over.

I don't know what "restore the iPod" is
It's usually the second thing to do (after Reset) when the iPod is not working correctly.
Select the iPod in iTunes and click Restore.
See this -> Restoring iPod to factory settings
what about my main question? Can I go back to "sync all" but manually block certain albums?
No because sync all is just that.
Sycning specific playlists should work fine. And you can create more than one and sync which ones you want.

Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.
