BUG: soft lockup in OEL 5.7 64bit PVM / OVM 3.0.2
Hello,
I have a single Oracle VM 3.0.2 Server, running three OEL 5.7 64bit PVM guest.
On of the guest VM's completely hanged with the following error: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 450s! [smbd:32057]
It seems the processes remained stuck while doing disk I/O:

As Avi said, the vNic is actually not rate limited to any speed. It will run at the maximum speed of the hardware - which should be well in excess of 1Gb.
If you're talking to something outside of the physical system, then you are limited by the speed of the physical NIC in the server - at which point you need to check it either from Dom0 or from the switch at the far end. There is no visibility of the link speed at the VM level.

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s!
Hi guys,
Need some help on how to get more information from following problem:
Since kernel 3.12 my laptop always crashed by "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [kworker/0:1:53]". Machine works in general but very slooowly.
I'd like to identify why it happens. Could you please advise how to get more logs, info?
P.S. Downgrading to 3.11 helpsewaller wrote:
You told us exactly zero about your system. You did not even tell what CPU it is.
Or how many cores you have.
Or how much memory you have,
whether is is 32 or 64 bit,
or, what chipset you are using,
Maybe what peripherals exist?
Which modules are loaded?
Or even whether this is a physical or virtual machine.
look at the output of journalctl, dmesg, lspci, lsusb, lsmod, and the link in my signature.
You're right. I just wanted to find a way to gather more information about such problem because it's not rare.
So i have problems on my physical laptop

always happen 2 o 3 minutes after NetworkManager renew ip from dhcp.. any idea?I experienced a similar (?) somewhat intermittent issue that seemed to be due, as with cactus, to having the killswitch of my wireless (ipw3945) enabled during boot. Ever since 2.6.20, however, the issue seems to have resolved itself.

I first noticed some hours after updating, it doesn't affect performance very much, but annoying nonetheless (kernel.log grown to 10MB, etc).
I thought it might be related to the phc undervolting patch, because I tried that, successfully undervolting my CPU.. but after looking at the times in kernel.log, I can see the problem started before I messed with that stuff.
I have been digging a bit to find the cause of this, and I have found that it's probably something to do with the cpufreq modules. When I set the governor to "powersave" or "performance", I get no "soft lockup"-messages. When I set it to "userspace" or "ondemand", I get them non-stop every 2-5 seconds.
My system is a Dell 500m laptop, Centrino, with 1.4GHz Pentium M (Banias), 2GB RAM, WLAN-card disabled (in BIOS).
Reverting to an old kernel (2.6.23.1-6) gets rid of the problem.
Anyone else experienced anything like this?Well, I have the same problem. At first I have noticed hat my CPU (CPU0: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz) is running at 1.73GHz all the time. So I tried restarting the cpufreq daemon:
[root@alderaan ~]# /etc/rc.d/cpufreq restart
:: Setting cpufreq governing rules , cpu 0Error setting new values. Common errors: [BUSY]
- Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)
- Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?
- Trying to set an invalid policy?
- Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available,
for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency
or because the userspace governor isn't loaded?
So I tried
[root@alderaan ~]# cpufreq-set -g ondemand
This works, but every change of CPU frequency results in the error messages posted by sokkalf.
I also notice some strange line in dmesg:
ACPI Exception (processor_core-0818): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [20070126]
Edit:
I checked kernel.log and found out that the AE_NOT_FOUND error had been there before the latest kernel upgrade, so it is probably not related to this bug.

Page can not be Displayed in EBS R12 64bit - OEL 5.4 64bit
Hi Hussein,
I have just installed EBS R12 (12.0.4) 64 bit on OEL 5.4 64bit, for our new client.
The installation was successfull in general, but as usual I hit with this "Page Can Not Be Displayed" error and the client side ie browser.
I can startup and shutdown the DbTier with status "0".
I can startup and shutdown the AppsTier with status "0" (well it shows this overall status at the end, but I see some error with "OHS")
This the sample log of the AppsTier:

Thanks a lot in advanceDid you remove the lock files as suggested before? Not yet, I am not at the client right now, I will go there tomorrow morning. I am just practising here in our office test instance :)

Oracle 9i on OEL 4.8 64bit
Hi all,
does Oracle 9i could be installed on OEL 4.8 64 bit?
Regards,
Asimdue to hardware upgrade need to perform this installation.
Currently using HP proliant servers
OS=RHELAS 4
EBS= 11.5.10.2
DB= 9.2.0.6.0
new hardware is Dell Power Edge series, and NO plan for application or database upgrade.
could not install previously used OS (RHELAS 4) on new servers so on test machine installed OEL 4.8 32 bit (application and database was working fine)
but was't sure about OEL4.8 64 bit. -
Mount points needed for oel 6.3 64bit for oracle 11.2.0.3 rac
Friends,
i have already installed oel 5.7 and 11.2.0.3 rac in 2 node db and 1node dns and it was working fine suddenly it was not working
when one node is up the other node is not booting. i tried a lot after that i deleted everything...
Now I am planning to install oracle 11gR 11.2.0.3 rac in oel 6.3 64 bit on virtual box of my dell precision notebook. i have 16GB ram and 500 gB hdd in that 150 GB i have decided to allocate for oracle.
below is the mount points i have planned. please check and tell me is it ok.
dns:
/ ------ 20 GB
/swap ---- i have assigned 2gb ram so i will allocate 3gb
/boot ---- 1gb
rac1:
/u01 ------ 20 GB --- for oracle rac binaries
/ ------ 5 GB
/tmp ----- 1 GB ---- while running runcluvfy.sh its checking for 1gb, so i allocated 1 gb
/swap ---- i have 4gb ram so i will allocate 4gb
/boot ---- 1gb
rac2
/u01 ------ 20 GB --- for oracle rac binaries
/ ------ 5 GB
/tmp ----- 1 GB ---- while running runcluvfy.sh its checking for 1gb, so i allocated 1 gb
/swap ---- i have 4gb ram so i will allocate 4gb
/boot ---- 1gbbelow is shared between the nodes
/asmdisk1 ---- 15gb
/asmdisk2 ----- 15gb
/asmdisk3 ------ 15gbis the above mount points are ok? or i have add/remove/edit any mount points.
thanks

How to unstill OEL 5.4 32bit and reinstall OEL 6.1 64bit
I have OEL 5.4 32bit installed.
I need to wipe it out and install OEL 6.1 64 bit.
how to unstill OEL 5.4 32bit and reinstall OEL 6.1 64bitWhen you start the system from the Oracle Linux installation DVD the installer will provide you an option to repartition or erase the target disk.

Black window bugs and lockups and crashes and WHAT'S WRONG?
First, I thought the problem was that my employer still uses Windows XP, with layers of custom security on top. But it happens at home, on my vanilla XP netbook.
So then I thought the problem was XP, which is, after all, obsolete. But now it is happening on my brand-new week-old laptop running 64 bit Windows 7 professional.
These are the problems:
(1) When recovering from sleep mode, or when I plug in a second screen, or even just from having the screen closed briefly, Firefox fails to redraw its window contents. I just get a black, empty window until I resize it or force a refresh. NO OTHER PROGRAM I USE HAS THIS PROBLEM.
(2) Sometime Firefox fails to redraw no matter what I do. I just had a totally black window, and when I clicked on the close box, a msgbox popped up, totally black inside, with a title like, "Are you sure you want to close?" I couldn't even see the "yes" and "No" buttons, and clicking where they usually are didn't work. I finally got it to close by hitting the enter key.
(3) Sometimes these problems are accompanied by a little vestigial micro-window, which has no contents, no close button, and no resize control. It's this nothing window with no title, but the title bar is long enough for maybe 20 characters. The most recent time this happened to me, the nothing window had a blinking text cursor inside, but typing had no effect. The only way to get rid of the micro-window is to close every single instance of Firefox, and then wait about 20 seconds. Then it disappears on its own. Sometimes it appears on its own without the black screen problem.
(4) All my favicons disappeared when I updated Firefox on my XP work computer, and they refuse to come back, even when I revisit the websites.
The computers involved are:
Dell E4200 running Win XP Pro
Acer One netbook running Win XP Home
Vostro 3350 running Win 7 Pro
All 3 computers are running Norton Security Suite (The E4200 is running an Enterprise custom load, the other two are running Comcast's free version)
And all 3 computers have been connected to a Displaylink USB video adapter (for a 3rd screen) at some point or another, meaning that the driver is loaded on all the computers, but the above problems occur without any external monitor at all connected.
Everything else is pretty vanilla.
I'm getting these issues every other day or so, and it is really starting to annoy me and make me worried that Firefox is unstable, with makes me worried that any unsaved work or even my hard drive data might be at risk.Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

Wacom Intuos4 keys bug on AE CS4/5 on Win7 64bit
After a lot of futzing, I still can't get the ExpressKeys and the Touch Wheel to operate as a jog - it turns out that any key that is replicated as a Num-Lock key on the keypad fails to work properly in AE. For example, the Wacom control panel sends {page down} as {keypad-3}, whether you have Num-Lock on or not, but only in AE. I tried older Wacom drivers as well. I checked with Wacom support, and they were able to recreate it and said it's a problem with After Effects on Win-64 bit, both CS4 and beta CS5, so they aren't going to fix it and instead "passed the information to Adobe". Basically it probably won't get fixed until CS6, if even then...
So my recommendation is, if you're running 64-bit, avoid the Intuos4 if you really want to use the ExpressKeys or Touch Wheel as a jog.You can probably save money getting an Intuos3 instead.
However, if anyone has been able to get it to work, please post or let Wacom know!

I just received my Intuos4 a couple days ago and ran into the exact same problem as you. I finally figured out a solution and created a tutorial on what I did to fix it. You probably already have this figured out by now, but thought maybe others could benefit.

I think that my issue is not related with https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144702

Last edited by dlh (2014-03-27 10:59:42)I am having the same problem. which kernel version are you using?
I'm using linux-3.13.7-1.
I downgraded to 3.13.6, we'll see if the issue continues. -
We running (again) into "+soft cpu lockups+" that records an error message like "+BUG: soft lockup - CPU# <n> stuck for <n>s! ..+" in the kernel log, and then spews a call stack dump.
We saw this originally with Oracle CRS/RAC (10.2.0.4) running, and problematic CMOS software (which took quite some time to resolve - and no thanks to the vendors in this case as we discovered this ourselves).
We're now seeing this error again (more a symptom than the actual error I believe), but this time around it seems related to IB switch issues (srp devices and multipath IMO).
Kernel used is 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 (x86_64).
Was wondering if anyone here/reading this is maybe also running an IB driver stack, with OFED (we're using OFED-1.4.1-rc2) and srp devices - and can share details on driver stack config and versions used.TommyReynolds wrote:
Are you using either Oracle OCFS2 or ASMLIB for this? ASM yes, but no ASMLib kernel driver. Yes to ocfs2, but it is not part of the RAC itself (i.e. not used for any CRS or Oracle files).
Sometimes this type of error can be traced back to a device driver bug. What versions of these (if any) are you using? The interesting thing that the existing driver stack has worked for over a year without any problems. And no new kernel or driver updates have been applied. So we had what seemed was a fairly robust s/w stack.
Also, check to see if there are any IB events such as other servers re/booting; improper zoning can cause extraneous loopresets and the fewer of those the better :)We got some weird IB anomolies at the time that the "soft lockups" start... Like when doing an ibhosts, getting the following warning thrown before listing the hosts:
ibwarn: [12358] _do_madrpc: recv failed: Connection timed out
ibwarn: [12358] mad_rpc: _do_madrpc failed; dport (DR path slid 0; dlid 0;0,1,10)
ibwarn: [12358] handle_port: NodeInfo on DR path slid 0; dlid 0; 0,1,10failed, skipping port
ibwarn: [12358] _do_madrpc: recv failed: Invalid argument
ibwarn: [12358] mad_rpc: _do_madrpc failed; dport (DR path slid 0; dlid 0;0,1)
ibwarn: [12358] discover: can't reach node DR path slid 0; dlid 0; 0,1 port 11The hosts are listed correctly - except for these warnings.
We eventually got stability again by disabling huge pages, forcing a specific modprobe sequence and forcing a set MTU size for IB. Not sure exactly what was wrong or how these changes fixed it.. still analysing the root cause.
On the IB side though, it is interesting that the IPoIB (IP over Infiniband) driver by default uses super-jumbo frames (65520 bytes) for the MTU. This is not supported by the switch (max MTU is 2048 I think). Also it seems that IB Connected Mode is enabled, which I do not believe is needed and we think it may be causing the large MTU size.
We're also running srp devices (using IB SCSI RDMA). Which add another layer of complexity to the IB layer (with which we are btw, extremely satisfy with - occurrences like this is very much an exception).
And this all started initially with the (very old) Cisco Subnet Manager not releasing/re-initialising IB ports correctly which forced us to reset that (and of course, also cause all the servers to reset).
Part of the problem could be using antiquated switch software. Cisco stopped supporting IB and we have a lot of their old IB kit. Planning to replace it perhaps this year with Voltaire or similar h/w.
Bottom line is that running a cluster is like racing a F1GP car. Cannot afford components that are not fully compliant and robust. At least we have managed to isolate the problem to some extent and have eliminated the "soft lockups". :-) -
Possible bug in 3.4.9 and maybe 3.5.3?

----- Reboot -----
The panicks i get are quite rare . I checked the memory recently (memtest) and was ok. My motherboard has a firmware problem where it misroutes irqs. Could this be the root to my problems?? And if its not the motherboard FW related to this how can i determine which HW part fails.

Linux 3.9.2-1 lockups (nVidia + nouveau)
With the recent update from Linux 3.8.11-1 to Linux 3.9.2-1, upon restart my computer would lock up after roughly 5 minutes and the CPU and/or GPU fan (couldn't tell which) started to spin up very fast a few seconds before hand. As soon as I downgraded to Linux 3.8.11-1, everything started to work again.
I am running an nVidia card (7950 I believe) and the nouveau drivers.
Has anyone experience a similar situation, and how can I get some more debug info to help resolve this?
Last edited by AlexC_ (2013-05-13 10:01:41)I do, with the official nVidia driver, however it seems to be fixed disabling the nVidia card with bbswitch (I'm on an Optimus Laptop, Dell L502X)
However, for some reason mplayer won't work. When I try to play a video, it crashes right away, and I see a kernel error in dmesg

Can't get the ipw3945 wireless working
Hi everyone!
I'm new to arch linux and I was wondering, how do I get the "ipw3945" wireless card in my laptop to work. I thought I followed the instructions carefully in the wiki, but nothing seems to work. It even tells me that it does not detect one. But I know it is there because I use Ubuntu, have used Debian, openSUSE, Fedora, and others, and they use the same driver.
Can anyone help me figure this out?
Thank you.
-ddrplayer512Okay I type in "dmesg" and I get this output:
