Burning NTSC movie on PAL disk

I decided to burn NTSC movie on a PAL disk using IDVD. The computer warned me about my action but I decided to go through with it and I got a surprise. The first DVD came out O.K but when I inserted another blank DVD for another copy, the IDVD encoder hung up and created a frisbee.
The next step I took was to transform my NTSC movie to PAL (Changed frames/s from 30 to 25) before using IDVD and choosing PAL disk. My IDVD menu movie clips were left in NTSC format, by mistake, and there was no computer warning. This time after burning two DVD's the third was a frisbee when the encoder crashed again. Each time I had to restart the computer.
Has anyone experienced the same problem ?
Is this a problem with software or my Mac ?

Not sure about the NTSC/Pal issue, but you might create a disk image and then burn a DVD-R. I use Verbatim exclusively.

iDVD is no longer supported by Apple and does not come pre-loaded on new Macs.

Alternatively, you can purchase a boxed version of iLife '11 from Apple, Amazone, etc. Boxed versions come with iDVD and iWeb still on the disk.

Burning NTSC vs. PAL

I have moved a great deal of my DVD library into iTunes and have never cared about NTSC v PAL. However, I may be moving from the US to a country where PAL is the standard.
What should I be worried about? Are the videos in my library going to be usable and, if so, how?
I'm assuming I can still view them on my iPad but what about on a TV monitor?

You don't say which country you are moving to but generally TVs in PAL countries can also show NTSC video from a source. You can also set the output from an iPad and other devices to be PAL.

You have several options.
1 - Create a new PAL project in Premiere Pro. Capture your footage in the usual manner, and as soon as it is in the project, hit the ENTER key to render it.
2 - Create an NTSC project in Premiere Pro, capture to NTSC DV footage, and export it out again.
Close project.
Create new PAL project, import the NTSC clip & then interpret/conform the footage to the project settings.
3 - Set up an NTSC project, capture footage, export to PAL DV or MPEG-2 from Premiere.
4 - Use TMPGEnc Xpress 4 - it's standards conversion is very good.
5 - Use ProCoder, as Ruud suggests
6 - Use CCE SP if you have it.
I'd try as many different ways as you can, and view the lot to see what looks the best.

Sharing movies overseas - PAL & NTSC burning

OK -
So apparently I have the option to burn a movie as NTSC or PAL.
So I have to assume that the region codes on my Superdrive only matter when there is a commerically sold protected disk being played.
Figuring out the best way to produce a home movie DVD to share with friends in Europe is still a problem.
I do know that apparently TV set-top DVD burners produce video disks which have no region code difficulties. Is this likewise true for movies edited in iMovie, Final Cut Express & burned via iDVD?
More information would help keep this from being a trial & error process - if the people on the other end are not overly technical. Its hard enough to get substantive "help desk-type" of feedback to even understand the nature of the problem your recipients might be experiencing.

I know all about the PAL/NTSC conversion because I, unlike you, live in a Pal area.
You are so lucky living in USA because NTSC is accepted in all areas. In fact even though I live in a PAL area, New Zealand all my DVD's produced for world sale are in the NTSC format. Virtually every DVD player accepts NTSC but unfortunatley for me the USA DVD players do notaccept Pal
So you can safely make and send all your DVD's in NTSC and they will be playable worldwide.
As I said I live in a PAL area. 25 frames per sec and I have to change my DVD programmes to NTSC approx 29 frames per second. To get an acceptable conversion can be either very expensive or time consuming.
I have not tried the Jes de interlacer so I cannot comment but most on the forum find it acceptable.
I found the problem was to get good quality on all formats, computer, tube and LCD and Plasma at an acceptable cost and did not tie up my computer for hours.
Eventually I managed to find out how to do it but it is a long job.
One would think that the answer would be to film in NTSC but one cannot do this in a PAL area because of the difference in the electricity voltage. If I used an NTSC camera under lamps here in NZ the pictures would be unusable and visa versa.
Nowadays all commercial DVD's are just dubbed in NTSC. This is a pity because PAL gives a better picture. In the trade NTSC used to be known as Never The Same Colour Twice.
Sometimes I wish I lived in the USA!

In the iDVD Preferences you need to change the PAL setting to NTSC BEFORE starting a new project.

Cannot burn NTSC DVD after burning PAL DVD

Using Adobe Premiere Elements vers.10, I created a video which I need to burn onto DVDs, in PAL format for European users and NTSC for North American recipients. I successfully burned (to folder) in NTSC, and then in PAL. Produced two sample DVDs from those two folders and reviewed them. This highlighted the need for a few corrections to the project. I carried these out, burned the revised film to folder in PAL format, and then wanted to do the same in NTSC format. The computer appears to work on the task, but produces no folder and no files. I am no longer able to procude a DVD in NTSC format, either by burning to a folder or burning directly on a DVD. What is the cause of this problem ?

I do not recall any issues, where the program gets hung up, though as a precaution, maybe clear the Media Cache in the Scratch Disks. I know that Encore (sort of the authoring "big-brother" to the authoring function in PrE) can get confused, when it has some older Media Cache files. It assumes that things have already been done, when it needs to "start over."
Also, I would create a new, empty folder, with a unique name, and direct the Burn to Disc to THAT folder. Since all that one gets is the VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS (empty), and then another folder, whose name I cannot recall (Encore does not write anything but the VIDEO_TS folder and IFO, BUP and VOB files), it's easy to confuse the output. Just thinking here.

QuickTime movie in Pal to NTSC

I have a PAL camcorder.
I made an i movie in PAL and then edited it. I then converted it to QT in Pal. I then want to convert it to NTSC in JES. It doesn't seem to want to convert. ??? Perhaps I put something wrong into the slots. Could some one give me the right steps?? I thought that I followed the "Unofficial iMovie FAQ"

Converting from Pal to NTSC is one of the hardest things to do.
Believe me! I live in New Zealand a Pal territory but when I wanted to convert my little TV programme DIYTV Learn TV Production in 44 minutes showing the world how to make saleable, watchable TV programmes on iMovie I had to convert it to NTSC and get it to work on all USA DVD's.
It took me five months! Nobody could tell me how to do it. You can get a man on the moon but not convert acceptable PAL to NTSC cheaply and easily.
I tried everything Jes, the Compressor which comes with FC Pro , took it to production houses and still I could not get an acceptable conversion that did not cost a bomb. I tried all the forums. I begged to be given some settings which would work. Nothing! Doing it digitally takes hours and you need the correct settings which are a 'big secret'.
I did not try Platinium Alchemist as it was about NZ$1000 a go and I had 8 programmes. I reckoned I'd not sell that many to cover the cost. I think this would be the best.
Now the first thing to find out is what you want to do with it once you have converted. This makes a difference for some of the ways you do this look awful on LCD screens
I am not an expert in Jes but a lot on the forum swear by it. I too never got it to work for me.
If your video is not too long you may consider having it done professionally by a duplication house.
For this you just need to take in your tape and they can make the change either to tape or DVD. They have the equipment mainly an NTSC recorder which are are difficult to come by in Pal countries.
You can do it the analog way at home by making a DVD, playing this on a cheap DVD recorder from China, a named expensive variety will not do, which has a cunning little switch between PAL/NTSC and you can make the change in real time and as good quality as you get, better than digital and it works on everything.
The big problem with this is you need an NTSC tape recorder.
Have you noticed your PAL camcorder will play in NTSC but not record. This is because the wattage/ampage, sorry experts I am dislexic here, is different in USA and it makes the pictures flicker if filmed under lights consequently the big firms only sell the correct type of camera for the country to avoid problems.
I hire an NTSC one as I have hours of video to change but if you have just one item it would be cheaper to get it done by a duplication house. Once you have it on NTSC you can do what you like with it.
Caution. If you want your iMovie to play on all USA DVD players you have to convert the sound to Dolby Sound AC3 but that is another problem.
This is my answer to the question for what it is worth. If anyone out there has a better solution please tell us. So far I have had no complaints and I have sold many DVDs changed like this. My change costs about $20 but takes hours to achieve but worth the effort.

DVD Burn - NTSC/PAL

I've got an old video clip that I'm trying to burn to DVD. Whether I try Toast, or iMovie/iDVD, when I go to burn, it "defaults" to PAL.
Even if I set it to burn NTSC, when I click "burn" it defaults back to PAL.
Any suggestions?

When Burning a movie, it keeps asking for more disks

I have finally gotten around to trying to burn a movie and after I have everything set to go. I click on burn once then the second time to start burning. It asks for the disk, which I insert. Goes through I believe stage 3, then spits out the disk and asks for a new one. I did this even though I thought it was strange because I obvioulsy can only use one disk to view the movie. So I put the new disk in and let it go a while later it asked for another disk. At this point, I cancelled the burn. Help what am I doing wrong. I have looked through all the help topics and the burning section is very vague.

Burn HD movies to disk

I'm thinking about upgrading my Imovie9 to Imovie11.
What I want to know is if I can burn HD movies onto bluray.
Can this be done with Imovie 11 or is additional software needed.

Go to the Roxio site and review Toast 10 Titanium Pro. This software has the required plugin for burning high definition video onto a standard DVD or a dual layer DVD. You DO NOT need a Blu-ray BURNER but you will need a Blu-ray player in order to view the DVD that you burnt using this software. It really works great. You can also burn your HD presentation to a Blu-ray disc without the need for a Blu-ray burner. The limiting factor will be that you can only burn less than a half hour of HD video on a DVD and about one hour on a dual layer DVD. However, you avoid the high cost of a blank Blu-ray disc and eliminate the need for a Blu-ray burner with this software. The Pro version also comes with other useful software. If I were you, I would eventually upgrade the FotoMagico software that comes with the Pro edition to FotoMagico Pro. Hope this helps.

Can Compressor convert my NTSC video to PAL?

I am trying to convert my NTSC footage to PAL. I was given a tip that the key is in the compressing stage and then use Studio Pro and burn a PAL DVD. Is this correct?

i saw you on the other forum.., you got fobbed off to this one.., actually you can 'convert' to PAL in both DVD Pro and Compressor..,
if you can use either at all you already know it.., do you know where the settings are in compressor.., (is your compressor working??).., an you load settings and assign a sourse and a destination.., if you ca do those things you can already 'convert.'
what ever, assuming compressor is working on your puter, open compressor and save a project name (give the project a name.) now in the
hit 'add file' (the icon, top left)
go to the settings/destination window (the window that covers the bottom left of your screen)
click the triangle that says 'apple'
click the triangle that says 'DVD best quality 120 minutes (if thats how long you want it.., as long as your movie is under this time your OK)'
drag that setting to the long strip in the window above (top right), check the sourse so you know where the file is going.
look in the inspector window and click the icon, second from the right, this is your encoding settings.
click, video format; change the setting to PAL.., check the frame rate has changed to 25fps
back at the window, top right, you will see 'submit.'.., hit that and it will send the job to the render window.., watch the magic
the same can be done from the inspector in DVD pro.
if this was too confusing, sorry, .., there must be some tuts somewhere.., try 'larry jordons' web site, or maybe 'peachpit.com'..??

DV-NTSC Project to PAL DVD

Here is what I intend to do:
Create a copy of the project file project_pal.fcp
In project_pal.fcp change easy setting to DV-PAL
Export sequences to quicktime
Use compressor to convert to DVD ready files
Author DVD w/ DVDSP
My questions are:
Where in here to I need to change any additional setting to make the DVD PAL ready? Is there anything in compressor or DVDSP I need to change or will exporting from a PAL project get that done?

Converting from NTSC to PAL is not a trivial bit of transcoding. There are disparate frame rates as well as different frame sizes. You can't just drop in a NTSC file in a PAL timeline and get good results.
There are three good ways to do it.
1. Purchase and use Graeme Nattress's Standards Convert plug in to convert the NTSC timeline to PAL on export within FCP.
or
2. Use Compressor's Advanced features to convert the exported NTSC file to PAL.
or
3. Take the file to a post house that can do a hardware based standard conversion.
Once you have the file in a PAL format, author a PAL disk and burn it within DVDSP.
Of course, the disk should be region free.

How do I burn a .mov file to DVD?

I need to burn an MPEG-2 video file saved as .mov to a DVD that will play in a regular DVD player.
I have tried opening iDVD and the selecting 'Create a New Project'. When I have selected a location for the project and the main window opens, I go to File > OneStep DVD from Movie...
My understanding is that when I import a movie file, it will burn it straight to the disc without any further options. It does this, however after a couple of minutes the DVD is ejected blank and iDVD says the burn has completed.
How can I solve this problem or is there another way to burn a .mov file to DVD?

A green screen in an indication that the movie is in a format not supported by iDVD. It should be in one of these formats: DV, high-definition video (HDV), MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-2 SD, MPEG-4 SD, MPEG-4 HD, and AVCHD. (From SDMacUser's post in What input file formats does iDVD...: Apple Support Communities). The post has other requirements that need to be met.
SD = standard definition.
Open your movie with QT Player and bring up the Info window for the movie. It will have the format:
Another possible reason is the Energy Saving settings on the Mac. Turn off energy saving and screen saver before starting the save as disk image or burn.

I get an error code when burning a movie to DVD

I use Premiere Elements 10 in my iMac OS lion vers. 10.7.2
I have 250 Gb free on my hard disc. The movie I try to burn is between 3-4 Gb
When starting to burn my movie to a DVD the following is seen in order on the screen:
Encoding Menu 2 of 2
Computing Media
Burning disks 1 of 1
and then it burns (at the end pretty quickly) to 99% and stay there.
I get an error code:
Internal software error: /Users/labuser/premiere/elements/molecules/pre10-bullseye/molecule-17/External/AuthorScri pt/Source/DVDCreator/FormatLib/Ma.....
When I look on the DVD, it looks like nothing has been burnt to the DVD.
What can be wrong?

I still have trouble with burning my movies to DVD.
Have tried the following:
Found that I had "-" in many of my file names (clips). I removed them from the file names, but this had no effect.
I moved my entire project folder to a shorter path folder. This had no effect.
I have not managed to find blank DVDs on sale here in Gothenburg, but will try to buy them online.
I have four movies that I want to burn on DVD discs.
Have succeeded in burning two of them.
I've tried to find what distinguishes between the two that are OK and the two that I have not succeeded with. They are all at about the same size, about 27-29 minutes long.
The clips are .m2ts and .mts files.
In one of the movies that are OK, all the clips are .m2ts files. In the second movie (that is OK), most of the clips are .m2ts files, but also there are .mts files.
In the other two movies that are not OK, it's a mix of .m2ts and .mts files.
When I try to burn the two movies which failed, I get the same course as I showed earlier (with an error code).
I must admit that I was wrong when I previously wrote that I could burn all the movies to my hard drive. The ones I can not burn to DVD, I can not burn to my hard drive.
