Business Objects XI 3.1 and JDBC

I am trying to connect to Oracle database using JDBC.Created a test universe and the JDBC connection to Oracle works fine in universe. When try to create a sample report using this universe, I always get error 'Exception: CS, Specified network layer is invalid : JDBC'. How do I get JDBC connection work with DeskI 3.1. Somehow DeskI is not recognizing the JDBC connection. Do we need to mofify any settings. The .sbo file JDBC has '<Parameter Name="Driver Capabilities">Query,Procedures</Parameter>'. Appreciate anyone share their experince and how they resolved this.

Hi,
is your JDBC source defined also on the BOBJ server (i.e the machine where the BOBJ server software runs on?)?

  • Comparison between Crystal Report Server XI R1, Crystal Report Server XI R1 , Business objects Enterpirse XI R1 and BOXI R2?

    Hello Everybody,
I am new to Business Objects Enterprise. I need to know what is differnce between   Crystal Report Server XI R1and Crystal Report Server XI R1 ; Business objects Enterpirse XI R1 and BOXI R2?
As a beginner, it will be very much helpful for me to learn in a better way and to go in the right track.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Annapoorani

    Annapoorani,
I will start off with the basic difference beteen Crystal Report Server and Business Objects Enterprise.  We can continue on after this initial bit of information.
Essentially, Crystal Report Server is a much like a subset of the full Enterprise Product line.  Whereas CRS is used for storing and scheduling Crystal Reports,  the Enterprise product extends this usability to also include Desktop Intelligence Reports as well as Web Intelligence reports.  There are also added features available with the full Enterprise Suite (depending on the licensing and installation) that also provide Performance Management, Dashboards and other enhancements.
In the sence of XI vs XIR2,  XIR2 is more up to date with fixes and service packs.  You will find the original XI products to be closer to an end of lifecycle when it comes to support.
As well, the newest release not mentioned in your line of questioning is Business Objects XI3.0.  Currently this is a java based deployment, but there will be a .NET version forthcoming.  Many new features have been added and you can find more information directly at www.businessobjects.com pages.  There is a full section on the website that outlines the various products.

  • Is it mandatory to use Business object for data transfer and work flow?

    <font size="3">
    <pre>
In our enterprise projects we deal with some screens where we add or update some data and again
we retrieve that data and display to user in various ways like displaying on screen as
a report or viewing in excel etc.. Most of the times, though we identify the business objects
based on the nouns in requirements document, really while implementing there will not be any
business logic in the objects. Almost all the objects which we identfy as business objects
may have methods like add, delete, update and retrieve methods. Still in these cases, is it required to
have business objects or can we use transfer object to send the data for saving and retriving or any other
pattern/guideline is there for dealing such cases?
I really appreciate your comments on this topic.
Also I apologize ahead of time if my explanation is not clear to you.

In my opinion, DAO pattern would be suitable for you. Generally the DAO (Data Access Object) will have the CRUD (create, read, update, delete) methods to retrieve data from data-source (e.g. database). Based on the data it will create the DTOs (Data Transfer Objects) and pass them to the caller. It will also receive the DTOs from the caller and save it the data-source. Thus in your case you can
    - remove the CRUD methods from the Business Objects (BO) and make them pure DTOs and use them with DAOs (If you are using JDBC codes inside your application and you don't have much of validation or processing logic in your BOs).
    http://www.corej2eepatterns.com/Patterns2ndEd/DataAccessObject.htm
    OR
    - use BOs in combination in DAOs (if using the database connection from a pool and BOs are having complicated processing logic).

  • Requirements and Architecture for Business Objects Universe

Hi - apologies in advance for the probable repeat question but a search of the forums brought back an overload of information that wasn't quite specific enough.
We are about to purchase an application that comes with a Business Objects Universe but we've been told that we'll need to sort out our own licensing for the Client/Server side of its use.
I've done a lot of work with Crystal Reports in the past but having read up on Business Objects it appears that either the Desktop Intelligence of Web Intelligence clients are designed for the reporting facilities in BO.
Basically, the question is what exactly do we need to run reports from the BOU across the company AND what server architecture is required/recommended for the same?
As I see it, the BOU is the equivalent of an ORM layer in software development. This would mean we'd have:
    DATABASE
    UNIVERSE
    REPORTING CLIENT
...where the reporting client allowed the development and distribution of reports based on the specific licences purchased. However the reporting client wouldn't be Crystal Reports - is that correct?
Also is there any ballpark figure for the server and client licence costs? Assuming 5 developers and up to 300 users (although it may only be management needing viewer access so possibly only a dozen users on top of the developers in that case).
I've tried to work this out for myself but there seems to be a lot of confusion around what is Business Objects (the product) and who Business Objects the company are and where Crystal fits in with everything.
For a bog-standard implementation of a BOU what is absolutely necessary?
    Thanks
    Nic

    Hi Nic,
As you've described Universe is a meta data layer in between Database and Reporting Layer. You could create reports using Desktop Intelligence, Web Intelligence, Web Intelligence Rich Client and even Crystal Reports. DeskI, WebI Rich, Crystal Reports do  require client installations and you have an added advantage of using local data sources like excel and create reports. WebI also creates reports but you don't need any separate client installer for it.
For the ball park figure I'd contact Sales Team...
Your question regarding what is absolutely necessary, there are lot more things need to be taken into consideration like below
    1) What are the repeorting needs at a little detailed level?
How would it help: Though there are several reporting tools for users and their reporting needs, it helps in deciding on which of the reporting tools should be the prime ones. Like WebI can be used as Adhoc Reporting Tool once you design your universe.
    2) Where would you want these reports to be deployed or on what portal do you want to see reports?
How would it help: It helps in deciding what should be the presentation layer for the reports and how it should be designed. Business Objects has InfoView portal that comes default where you can deploy DeskI, WebI, Crystal Reports. Or if you need to use an existing sharePoint portal you'd need Integration with Sharepoint software.
    3) Do you need ETL tools to load your data?
How would it help: It helps in making recommendation on ETL process and if Business Objects Data Integrator is suitable for the scenario
    Hope this would help.

  • DTO, Business Objects and architectural layers design

    Hi everybody,
What would prevent one from using Business objects (properties + getters/setters and bevaviour related to a business entity) thru all tiers of a J2EE Web application ?
Example : DAO layer populates BO properties, Business layer uses BO behaviour , web layer stores BO in some scope (request,session,...) for view presentation of the BO properties.
Compared to a DTO/VO (only properties, no behaviour) solution :
    - If the application is distributed the BO solution adds serialization overhead (possibl performance bottlenecks) if BO's are large objects.
    - If there is requirements for clustering , storing large BO's in session adds session replication overhead.
    - BO solution breaks layer isolation , but practically speaking what could be the consequences of it ?
    - Some BO properties need formatting for text deiting by the views and cannot be displayed as is.
    - BO solution is a more OO approach than using only data objects
What other arguments can you think of ?

"Session" data applies to the session. Thus when I
order a book and it is added to my shopping cart the
session data might be used to store that information.
But that data in of itself is not a "business
s object". It is, by definition, session data.Ok conceptually speaking it is session data, but from
a technical point of view you need an Object instance
of some sort to hold that data.No actually you don't.
There are a number of ways to maintain session data. With tradeoffs between each.
What I was talking about (which does not mean I think
It is a good idea...) is using the BO properties for
holding that data and storing the BO instance(s) in
    the session.
And I still don't see that this is a "Business Object". No more so than a security key is a "Business Object".
The best term is session data and you might have different groupings (data not behavior) within that.
Exactly what behavior do you envision?Any computational behaviour that uses the BO
properties and is needed to implement a use case.
This behaviour is used to calculate data that is not
persisted by the DAO as is but rather computed from
    m other persisted data.
    Give me an exact example.
For example it would be quite reasonable to have a DTO that represents a "rectangle" and that DTO would have a height and width and the DTO would have a method that return the area (multiplying the two data points.)
Conversely my previous example of the zipcode, the DTO should NOT have a method to validate that the zipcode exists although it could validate that it has the correct form (5/9 digits in the US.)
The problem is coupling. If the BO needs the
database layer (see the zipcode example above) then
the GUI layer is going to need the database layer is
well. Even though the GUI will never use the
database layer.I understand that this coupling applies to
distributed architectures where you package your
applications in different jars/wars/ears. In this
case If BO's ared used thru all layers, The GUI
(web) layer needs the data access layer jars even if
    it will never use it.
    This clearly adds coupling.
But in the case of a collocated application (a single
war) it does not change anything.
No. The point is not how the application is architected.
The point is that the GUI layer is then dependent on the database layer internals.
Consider another example, the DTO is produces a formatted xml string using a XML library. Now you need to create the database layer for the system. The database layer does not need the XML at all. And yet just to compile the database layer you are going to have to provide the XML library. This represents coupling that serves no purpose. And although in very small projects it might be convienent in larger projects coupling like that will cause problems and confusion.
And? Are you suggesting that the BO should do the
formatting? No I mean that DTO/VO's could have either text
formatting/editing methods or property types (e.g
String formatted property for a date) that facilitate
the work of the presentation layer. And most of the time that is going to be incorrect.
"Formatting" for a web page is likely to be different than for a printed report. And for a backend system it might need XML which is still a different format. Adding all of that to the DTO is not the way to do it. (In the same way that the database and gui code should not be intermixed.)
    I would not put
any similar formatting behaviour in the BO. That's
why I consider this issue while comparing BO and
    DTO's
    - BO solution is a more OO approach than using only
    data objects
    No it isn't.
An object that prints itself is not more OO than one
    that is printed.
I thought one of the purpose of OO programming was to
group behaviour and dataCertainly, but it doesn't mandate that one form of grouping is better than another. After if that was the sole concern then why not have just one object for the entire application - that is one way to "group" it.

  • Business Object and tasks for Plant Maintenance

    Hi,
I would like to know which object and method should I use to create the following tasks?
Inspect equipment to check if faulty
    Replace equipmentCreate purchase order
    Maintain equipmentCreate service order
    Thank you.

    Hi Arun,
Swtich on the event trace using tcode SWELS and then perform each of the operations you mentioned above. Then see the event trace using tcode SWEL to check which business object events and business objects are associated with these operations i.e. inspect equipment, replace equipment, maintain equipment etc.
Then you can drill down in those business objects using SWO1 tcode and check if there are any methods for your requirements or not.

  • CE CAF Business Object, Complex Structure and external service...

    Hi,
I want to use a web service as remote persistence in a CAF business object(Entity service). My Problem is, that the service returns a list of objects. But it seems that in the new CE the paradigm for caf changed a little and instead of complex attributes (an attribute with a structure and cardinality 0...n) you can only create an association with another business object.
Anybody knows how to bring that together? I want to do something similar like described here:
    <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/5e9ca25b-0e01-0010-bbaa-f3b963e89edd">https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/5e9ca25b-0e01-0010-bbaa-f3b963e89edd</a>
But using the new CE the Problem is, that I couldn't manage creating a complex attribute in an Entity which can then be used as mapping for a web service.
When I create a simple attibute and replace the type with a complex one, i can do the mapping but there is an error: "The business node has an invalid main structure"
    anybody a good idea?
    kind regards and thanks alot
    Alex

    Hi Alexander,
You are now able to create the Structure and set the cardinality also in NetWeaver CE.  I thin the following steps will be helpful for you.
    1. Create a CAF project called firstcaf.
2.Create an entity service within the project called Customer.
    3. Now expand modeled.
    4. Then right click on Data Types. Here you will get the option "New Structure".
5.Now select New Structure, One popup will appear then enter the Structure name called Address and click ok.
    6. Now You will get your Address structure under Complex Types.
7.Double Click on Address. In right hand side you will get the Address structure for editing.
8.Now from left hand side(Existing Type) expand caf.core and add your required attribute. In right hand side (structure Field) you can edit the name of attribute. suppose for Address structure I have added two field phone and mobile (both are short text ). save it.
    9. Now switch to Composite Application Explorer and expand Business Objects ->Customer -> Customer->Customer. and double click on it (Customer).
    10. In right hand side expand project firstcaf ->modeled. Now you will get your structure here, In my case I will get Address structure. Now select your structure and  click Add button. Structure will go to right hand side(Structure Fields).
    11. If you want to change the cardinality it is very simple. Select The Structure from right hand side(Structure Fields) and in bottom side click on property. Now you will get the Cardinality field. you can change it as you like.
    Thanks and Regards

  • Service Packs and Fix Packs for Business Objects XI Release 2

    Hi,
How can I know wich services pack or fix packs are installed on my server? I have installed Business Objects XI Release 2, and Xcelsius 2008 Release 2, and Live Office.
Do you know where can I download a spreedsheet that contains informatiion about the fix packs or service packs and the issues that solved??
    Thanks
    Lilia

Your first question was answered many time int his forums, please use search functionality before posting a question.
There is no publicly available Version matrix + fixed issues list.
However, you can do to Service Market Place > Downloads locate XIR2 section and see how many Service Packs and Fix Packs are available.
Latest Service Pack for XIR2 is 6
latest Fix Pack for XIR2 is FP6.4 (needs to be installed on top of SP6)
To the right of each SP/FP in the download section of SMP is a link called "Info" , it leads to Knowledge articles which contain list of fixed issues.
As all SP/FP's are cumulative, you can view Sp6 readme and Fp6.4readme to get overall picture of fixed issues.

  • Problem with Business object attributes in UWL Workitem description

    Hi All,
I have developed a workflow which sends the workitem for two level approvals. Once the workflow is triggered workitem sent to the respective user for approval. When user opens the workitem in inbox he can see all the data which comes from the 'Z'  Business object in R/3 and he can approve the same. Everything works fine when this process happens in R/3 system.
The problem comes when user opens this workitem in UWL or this workitem is sent to user mail ID executing  'SWN_SELSEN' report, all the attributes of the business object are displayed in the workitem description  except 2 . These are the Minimum annual salary(GRMIN) and  Maximum annual salary(GRMAX) fields from 'T510N'  table.
    Regards,
    Vaishali.
Edited by: vaishali rautray on Dec 24, 2008 7:52 AM

    Hi Saumya,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
For storing the Minimum and maximum annual salary values I have created two attributes in the business object which are referring to database fields. T510N is a customizing table. I could see the values for the same, if I test the Business Object or Trigger the w/f in R/3 and check the approval work item in R/3. These values disappears only in case of web interfacing i.e. If I send the same work item to outlook mail or check it in UWL.
I had checked the same and thought if there is any problem with BO or some other processing takes place before these values are retrieved. But I wonder why this happens only if I process the work item outside R/3 system?
    Regards,
    Vaishali.
