Buttons over Video issue

I have 2 buttons over the video which I use to control which audio track is playing. This works fine on a computer (Apple's DVD Player and PowerDVD) but doesn't work on a stand alone DVD player. I'm new to using buttons in the subtitle stream so I'm not sure if this is a common issue or not (and I did try to search the forum).

I figured out the problem so I'll wrap up the thread in case someone else runs into this problem...
I was using dvdSP's ability to "offset" the overlay file in order to make my highlights match up perfectly. For some reason if the offset differs from one overlay to the next in the same subtitle stream, it causes apple dvd player to crash.
example:
(all motion menus were created on one track with BOV & then separated into stories for easy targeting)
subtile(BOV) 1 had an overlay file offset to 0x & -4y & subtitle(BOV)2, my second menu, had an overlay file offset to 3x & -1y.
The first one would play fine, but as soon as apple dvd player detected the next subtitle it would crash. I solved the problem by editing my overlay files in photoshop to compensate for the offsets & leaving the offset in DVDSP untouched. weird... but it works now.

  • Buttons over video is crashing Apple DVD player!

I have 4 menus (tracks) that use buttons over video. The first one plays just fine- the buttons come up after a second & disappear 30 seconds later(then the menu continues into a film). The other 3 menus crash 1-2 seconds before the buttons over video forces the subtitle to become visible. here's what i've done to troubleshoot:
-set a different menu to be first play
-swapped out the m2v/ac3 files to see if that was causing the issue
-moved my menus/tracks to different VTSs (using dvdsp 4)
-shifted the hi-lite markers forward and back to various times
    -swapped out the overlay file
All my tracks were created exactly the same- using the same BOV structure (13 buttons in all)... I'm completely baffled. One works fine and the rest don't work at all!!
p.s. i burned the disc and tested it on a regular dvd player.. seems to work fine, but it still crashes on the computer.

  • Letterboxed 16:9 Buttons over Video: a nightmare in the making?

I am creating a project that will include A LOT of Button Over Video menus. The videos are 16:9, so I had planned to use Letterbox display mode. In the manual (p.442)it says that there are issues with this on 4:3 monitors. One solution seems to be a script and 2 sets of overlays. I have no experience with scripts, but am planning to have several alternative language subtitles. Before I stumble into the uncharted territory of scripts, could someone familiar with them advise whether I am just asking for trouble (there isn't much hair left to pull out....)

actually i misread Philippe's statement. If he is truly talking about "Print to Video" -> which would imply he goes to tape over firewire or whatever connection he has <- then i must pass. I have not done that before, so my knowledge is purely theoretical.
I do assume for now that if you are using Print to Video that you would have to the letterboxing yourself. From my recollection of using video to do this, VCRs/Tapes do not have the ability to take widescreen material and letterbox it automatically during playback pending TV etc.
But i might be wrong there. I doubt it though. VCRs never really struck me as intelligent devices - that's why they worked

  • Buttons over video, scripting?

    Hey Everybody,
I'm working on a DVD that has some fairly specific requirements, some of which are negotiable, others of which are not. It's set up kind of strangely because of the limitations of the source footage, I'll try to describe it:
There are two tracks. Track 1 is an edited version of the source footage. Track 2 contains two angles, a continuous wide shot and a continuous close up. I tried making one track with three angles, but since Track 1 doesn't precisely sync up with Track 2, that didn't work.
When I took over this project, it was decided that the best way to work around the limitations of the footage would be to space chapter markers every thirty seconds in each track, so that the user can go from, for instance, Chapter 4 Track 2 to Chapter 4 Track 1 by pressing the enter key on the remote. Cumbersome but acceptable.
What I'm trying to do is set up buttons over video that can go from Track 1 to -either- angle of track 2, and I'm having a problem doing that. I tried just setting targets for the buttons, but I can't set the track, chapter and angle. So I tried a simple script (I'm very new at scripting) that looks like this:
    1 mov GPRM 0, SPRM 7
    2 sub GPRM 0, 1
    3 add GPRM 0, 49280
    4 Jump Indirect GPRM 0
    5 Set System Stream An(2)
That doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this just a ridiculous idea?
Thanks in advance for any advice! I really appreciate it.

  • Selected/activated button overlay in Buttons over Video

I have six different buttons over video, with one overlay.
The buttons are assigned to each of six audio tracks.
When I select and activate a button the overlay goes from white to red, and the audio changes to the specified audio track. So far, so good. But, when I want to select another button, the red overlay disappears, and I see the selected buttons white overlay. This is of course "default", but I'd like the red overlay to stay, indicating that I'm still listening to that audio track, even if I'm choosing between another button.
Can this be done somehow? I'm thinking that perhaps I can add a subtitle that tells me what Track I have selected, but the overlay is already a subtitle...
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Only one button can be "selected" at a time, meaning when people scroll through the selections on the menu there is an indication of where they are/what they are about to press when they hit enter.

Same general concept applies to buttons over video. Only one state active at a time, and subtitles will not work since the buttons are a subtitle stream (of course you can use add text in the overlay for the buttons) Page 460 of the PDF

  • 'Resume' function (buttons over video / white rabbit)

The resume function takes me back to the last chapter marker passed in the track I was viewing previously. Is it supposed to work like that? I thought it would take me bak to the last moment viewed (give or take several frames).
I've got a video track, I use buttons over video to jump to a menu with video background. When the menu times out I run a script that just states 'resume', but it will only go to the last chapter marker passed. Some of my white rabbit videos are several minutes long so that's not very helpful.
From what I understand you can only resume from a menu?
I've had another look at The Matrix and note that after a white rabbit it always returns to exactly the same point in the main movie as though there were a chapter marker there... but no chapter marker exists at those points so what did the authors of the Matrix DVD use to target that return point?
    Any clues anyone? Thanks

Thanks Trai - I'll try that approach.
After trying all sorts of combinations to get 'resume' working, all I can imagine is it's not properly implimented in DVDSP or it's not properly supported by players.
A button on a menu with a target or 'resume' should according to the DVDSP manuals return to the point the user was at in a track when the menu was launched (see quote below).
I've tested on 3 hardware players as well as a PC player and Apple's own DVD player. Only a sony DVD recorder resumed to the correct place in the video track. The only other possibility I can imagine is that the buttons over video are in some way causing the problem when resuming? I noticed when the sony did resume to the correct point the subtitle stream being used for the buttons over video was no longer visible (even though a prescript on the track was forcing them to show)
    <quote from DVDSP3 and 4 manual>
    About Resume
If you jump to a menu while watching a track, for example, by pressing the remote control’s Menu button, the DVD player remembers what track you were playing and how far you were into it. A mostly unknown feature of DVD players is that you can press the Menu button while in a menu to resume playing the track at the same place you jumped from. Creating a button on the menu and setting its Target to Resume provides the viewer with a more obvious way to resume playing the track.

  • Buttons Over Video In A Menu?

    Hi,
I created a 40-second motion menu (Menu 1 in the scheme of things) with a music track. I will put "Play Movie" and "Scene Selection" buttons in this menu, but I want to them to appear about 15 seconds after the menu starts playing. Is there a way to do this? I know you can put buttons over video for the main video track at any time, but how about a looping menu?
    TIA,
    James

What I did was add my short intro video to the end of my main video track (V1) in the Track Editor, and add a chapter marker between them. Then I set the First Play setting of the disk to that chapter marker. Then I set the disk's End Jump setting to Menu 1 (my main menu with highlighted navigation buttons). This was pretty simple to do and it looks seamless during simulation.
So, the disk will play the intro video first, then jump to to the main menu.

  • Buttons over video

    Hello all,
I am trying to create a DVD of several presentations. Each presentation will have it's own picture in picture video track. The large box will contain the presenters slides that change at the right moment. The small box will contain a head and shoulders shot of the presenter speaking. My client want's on-screen buttons to allow viewers to skip to the next or previous slide in the track.
I have made my picture in picture video track with a chapter marker at the start of every slide in FCP and imported it into DSP. Now I am attempting to make my buttons over video to allow the skipping....but I've come across two problems:
    1. After creating a subtitle track with a button, the button does not appear in the simulator regardless of wether I use the text or overlay method as descibed in the on screen help.
    2. To create the subtitle track I have placed button highlight markers at the beginning and end of the track but when I hit project-timeline-add subtitle at playhead the subtitle only stretches as far as the first FCP chapter marker and won't extend beyond that. I assume I need the chapter markers to give the 'skip' buttons something to aim at and I installed them in FCP because FCP is much more accurate than DSP at doing this.
While we are at it, if I get the BOV working, will I need to use scripting to 'skip' to the 'next' or 'previous' slide?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Can't get Button Over Video button graphics to appear using Subtitle Clips

I have a video in a track in DVD SP 3. In S1 of the track I have, near the beginning, a Subtitle Clip about 2 secs. long with text which describes the scene. No problem. Near the end of the track I have another Subtitle Clip in S1 but this time, instead of showing text it shows a button graphic of two little arrows for Buttons Over Video (which when activated make the DVD go back or forward). The graphic is in the form of a standard tif Overlay file as used for Simple Overlays for a menu - a white background with the arrows in red with a black border, all as in the manual. The arrows have two Buttons created over them.
The two little arrows do not show in the Simulator nor in the Mac's DVD Player when the project is Built, nor do they appear in either of my two stand-alone DVD players when the project is burned, but they do show in DVS SP's Viewer window when I move the playhead over the Subtitle Clip in the track. The buttons themselves work. I know this because one is designated the default and when the two arrows should appear, pressing the (physical) remote on my DVD players causes the designed action, and this happens even if I press the remote's left arrow to select the left button and then press Enter. No relevant error messages during Building.
I have moved the Subtitle Clip (the one showing the arrows) down to S2 in case it is not possible to have two Subtitle Clips in S1, but no change. Also, I have added a large blob in the middle of the Subclip Overlay file to see whether the Overlay file got displaced, out of the image area, but the blob appears in its correct position.
    What can I do please?
G5/2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1 GB RAM, 150 GB HD, Sony DCR-HC96 mini DV, FCE HD 3.0 DVD SP 3

After vast effort I have concluded that a graphic in a Subtitle does not work, despite the manual and two other fat books saying it does (although, interestingly, all of them discuss it only very briefly). I have had to use text ("<-") to indicate my back button - not elegant.
Also, Subtitles do not work over stills - I have had to convert them to video.

  • Buttons over video, subtitle stream displays on wrong story!

Here's a quick run down of my project:
the client has a video program which should play two different ways. the first button on my main menu should play the video program with no subtitle streams on. the second button on my main menu enables the same program to be played only now with subtitles stream 1 turned on. the subtitle stream is serving as buttons that appear over the video which jump to other submenus.
my problem is that the first button, no matter what i've tried, still displays the subtitles stream though i don't want it to. i have one track of the video with two stories, 1 for display without the subtitle track and the other to display with the subtitle track. the button for the 1st story is set with the "view" option unchecked for subtitle stream 1 while the second is set with the "view" box checked...yet it still displays both! i've checked my disc options and the subtitle track's "view" is unchecked...
i'm at a loss for what else to try. please help!

i'm encountering the exact same problem with buttons over video in dvd studio pro. despite of the fact that the simulation within dvd studio pro works flawlessly, after buidling the video_TS folder and opening it in the dvd-player application, you can't hide the subtitles anymore (you can set the subtitle-streams in the menu to whatever you like but the subtitles never disappear). the same problem exists if i burn or build and format a physical dvd.
help is really appreciated! thanks in advance for every hint!

  • DESPARATE NEED OF HELP - Changing Angles via "Invisible" Buttons over Video

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and glad to be here.
I'm going nuts. I'm trying to author a DVD with 3 angles in DSP4.
My first test of the DVD worked just fine before I added the buttons over video. I was able to switch angles successfully by hitting the angle button.
But because so many users are using universal remotes, and some dvd players do not have angle buttons, , my client is requiring angles to change on the fly by either pressing the enter button to cycle through them, or the directional button. Up being main angle, left, alternate A, and right alternate B. I went with the latter.
When I test the dvd in simulator, my buttons over video work fine. Also success when testing with Apple DVD player.
    But here's the rub. . .
On set top players I am only able to make one change of angle per marker, and also I am unable to pause, fast forward, or review.
It seems that when the button highlight is ticked, all playback functions are disabled. (Only on set tops, the apple software DVD player will sill pause, and ff, etc)
Now when I test burn again with out button highlight, I am able to use playback functions.
Is there another way I can accomplish this with out buttons over video?
I know of DVDs that change angle with the enter button, but I hoping like h_ll that it's not something that's only available to Scenarist users. Of course, I'm a mac head.
    Thanks in advance,
    Desparately seeking solutions,
    Mickey
    powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Not so! Several titles use the enter button to change
angles, but I know that these were authored with
    Scenarist.
Not so! If you can use the "Enter/Play" button on the remote to change angles, you are activating a button onscreen (or an invisible one) to perform that action -- you aren't changing angles directly with that remote button. The DVD spec is the DVD spec, regardless of which authoring app was used.
Through my research I found out that the BBC wrote a custom
program to insert new invisible buttons every two
seconds, but a least I have a solution, albeit a time
consuming one, and that's make a highlight marker
every two seconds and paste my auto-action buttons in
    there....every two seconds....
    but at least it works.
You should know that every other marker actually DEactivates buttons over video, and even replacing them every two seconds doesn't rescue you from the FF problem, it just means they'll re-appear within two seconds after the FF operation stops. Also, the BBC didn't "write a custom program" -- they did the same thing you're doing. If you fast-forward through a program and subtitles reappear immediately after you stop, it just means there was a new subtitle marker right after you resumed play. When you do that, you'll always get the next subtitle when play starts again. If you still see buttons during the FF operation, they are burned onto the video, not part of a subtitle stream.
Please dispense with the idea that there are "programs" on a DVD that might do things DVD Studio Pro won't let you do. The only thing on a DVD other than video is the occasional rudimentary script, but even scripts can't be executed while video is being played.
Contrary to the operation of HD-DVD and Blu-ray, standard DVD players have no real RAM (just on/off registers for variables) and no operating system to speak of. It's always playing video, whether it looks like an actual interactive app or not. DVD players don't run programs, they are simply able to show still images and accept input, there is no actual software being run.

  • Buttons over video don't load properly when first previewing...

    Hi there,
I have some nice controler buttons over a video. They all work fine except when I first preview it in the Content Viewer (both iPhone and iPad). I realized every time I create a new folio and add this sample video, the buttons get "half way under" the video (as they are placed half way over the frame border line), as in the pic below:
Then, if I touch either the play, pause, or close button just one little tap they get "over", and so every time I make changes to the article or other articles in the Folio, the buttons "load" ok. But, it is strange that when loading for the first time they do not "appear" as expected. They should appear since first time as below:
Wondering if it is just a Content Viewer issue, or when I first send an app to App Store, it will be loaded like the first picture, when user loads the app for the first time... (?)
Is this a bug? I have to mention this video and buttons are inside a MSO, and as I said, when I play, pause or close the video, it works, and when I come back the buttons load fine.
Thanks for any help, suggestions, ideas...

I'm writing this in case anyone else has the same problem.
I've resolved it! The library had not finished upgrading! I waited 2 hours for the processing to stop and now the slideshows are working perfectly.

  • Buttons over video doesn't work on set top dvd player

I've tested my project on apple dvd player & my set top panasonic dvd player and it works fine. my friend has tested it on his sony & a few other set tops without any issues.. I just put the disc in another sony dvd player & now the button hi-lites aren't showing up! To see if it was just the dvd player I tried a disc authored in scenarist that also uses buttons via forced subtitle streams & it works just fine. is my issue a result of using dvd studio semi-pro?
has anyone out there run into this?
p.s. both my track and disc settings have "force display" checked.

    Unfortunately I have come across this all too often. So lets establish the facts here. The disc;
plays fine on stand alone DVD players
    plays fine on Macs
    plays fine on Windows computers
but it has trouble playing on her computer.
So her argument is that their must be something wrong with the disc...
    Really?

  • Buttons over Video woes

    Hi all,
Having trouble with my BOVs - they worked fine, now they don't! (it always happens this way the day before deadline, doesn't it? :P)
    A bit of background...
I'm using DVD Studio Pro 4.
I've got a bunch of clips on the one track stuck end to end with chapter markers on the beginning of each. within two of the chapters (separate), I have a single BOV to link out to another track with more indepth info on the topic talked about at that point and then linking back to the button/chapter marker at the start on the BOV section. This setup was working perfectly until sometime yesterday when now all that happens when the playback comes to the start marker for the BOV the playback instantly skips ahead to the next chapter ie. next clip along and completely jumping over the BOV section. If I set the BOV markers to just button markers it seems to work fine, but then I can't get the viewer back to where they came from (AFAIK, resume only works for jumps from track to menu, not track to track, so I can't seem to use that either)
The wierd thing is that all this was working fine yesterday - I don't know at what point it stopped working, but I suspect it may have been at the point I added the second BOV on the track - can you only have one BOV event per track?
If anyone is able to help I'd be greatly appreciative - the DVD I'm working on has to go to the replicators tomorrow, and I'm all out of ideas.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    -Matt.

    hey there,
Thanks for your reply, I guess I'd failed to mention it (as I'd not thought it relevant, but there you go) but I had the project set up pretty much the way you described I should try, with the markers for the BOV turned off in the story - but it turns out that was the problem! I added the 1st marker to the story and made the 2nd marker a button marker only and it all works fine now (with the exception that trying to skip forward within the chapters containing the BOVs take you straight to them, but hey I can live with that)
Ok, there's the caveat, beware when mixing BOVs and stories.
    Regards,
    -Matt.

  • How to determine the bit rate with button over video subtitles?

I have a project where I've got several questions that come up on the screen. The DVD is subtitled in 14 languages, so depending on the language chosen, it will show the question in the proper language along with navigation buttons to go to the next question or track.
The problem is this: I added several new questions that each have a black only video that runs about 1min with 14 subtitle tracks made from photoshop psds. When I try to build, it fails saying "bit rate too high." When I removed all but 5 of the subtitle tracks, then it would build. I came up with a workaround, but then hit the limit of 99 tracks, menus or stories on a DVD.
I went back and tried combining all 3 questions in to one slide, but now with more information on the psd, it will only allow 3 subtitle tracks before it reaches the max bit rate.
How does it determine the bit rate? What can I do to lower the rate? I tried compressing the video at the lowest bitrate, but it didn't' help. I tried changing the psds to much smaller jpg files, but it didn't change anything. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!
    Thanks.

    CS,
Almost all DVD SP Tracks should first be completely constructed in a Sequence in FCP, the markers placed there, and then everything encoded into a single Mpeg 2 clip with matching length audio (even if just low bit rate AC3 silent audio, as the case may be, because all Mpeg 2 clips in the Title domain should be accompanied by an audio stream), and then imported into DVD SP.
Lay your subtitles under that and see what happens.
