Buying a used Macbook, Display working as it should?

hi,
Just bought a used macbook, its an early 2007 model, 2.2ghz processor with 4gb ram and 500gb hard drive. Quite a good deal. Only thing thats bothering me is that when I lift the lid, the display remains black until it reaches a right angle, at that point it switches on fine.
Is this normal? My friends macbook that is slightly newer than this seems to switch on when you lift the lid a little, whereas this remains a black screen 'til its totally upright.
Thanks

In the last year I have replaced half a dozen Macbook displays due to failing backlights. It is a very common fault with them. There are many replacement services on the web and start at around $200US. Or, if you are up for the challenge you can replace it yourself for around $100US. It's not too difficult and there are many video tutorials on the net to help you.
You will find the backlight will fail completely in the coming months/weeks/days/hours leaving you with a pretty black display.

  • Should I buy this used MacBook??

I'm thinking of buying a used MacBook (I have to return the one I have from work because I am changing jobs)...it's almost 3 years old and here are the specs:
    Specs:
2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    2 GB RAM
    250 GB hard drive
Built-in dual-layer Superdrive to burn DVDs and CDs
    Built-in wifi and Bluetooth
    Built-in iSight camera
Firewire 400 port and 2 USB 2.0 ports
    Intel GMA X3100 graphics
    Running OSX 10.6.4, fully updated.
    iLife 09 installed and updated.
    iWork 09 installed and updated.
    MS Office 2008
    Thanks!!

Sounds exactly like mine, Same basic specs and with MS Office 2008,
Is it the White MacBook 13 inch ?
Mine is a MacBook 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo: (13-inch, Late 2009) – Model A1342 Polycarbonate Unibody ( MC207LL/A ), I upgraded the memory to 4GB and the Hard Drive to a 500GB 7200 RPM pretty much the day after I bought it. With the Microsoft Office 2008 installed I probably wouldn't get $625 for mine.
The one you're asking about I wouldn't pay more than $500 at the most for, Give your local area CraigsList a try. I've seen more Mac's on there lately than you can imagine.

  • What to look for when buying a used MacBook Pro? Tips

Here to acquire a few tips on purchasing a used Macbook Pro. I am not graced with an Apple Store in my area, so I must rely on my own sub par geek wit and with the help of yours.
    Tips I know.
Checking Battery Cycles and mAh capacity.
    Looking for third party applications.
    Request the original StartUp/Install Disks.
    Checking memory ratios...

Shop your local and nearby Craigslist websites, starting with:

Read this excellent post by frequent contributor JasonFear about buying and selling through Craigslist:

    Avoid Ebay.
If third-party applications or other software are included, they add nothing at all to the value of the machine unless you are given the original installer discs for them. Otherwise, they are just pirated software that you can't reinstall if you ever need to.

  • Buying a Used MacBook Pro

    Hey All!
I had my MacBook Pro stolen a few days ago. I am looking to buy a used MBP from a trusted friend. He, however, has not purchased an AppleCare plan for his computer. He purchased his computer 8 months ago.
My question: If I purchase a used MacBook Pro, am I still able to buy an AppleCare plan within the first year of the original purchase of the machine?
    Thanks for your help!

    Yes.

  • Buying a used Macbook & wondering about warranty coverage

I'm in the market to replace my 6 year old iBook and don't have the money on hand to buy something new out of the box. Have been looking around Craigslist and found several Macbooks, 6 mos old or so, that have what I need and are more in my price range. The sellers seem to indicate that it's possible to extend or buy AppleCare coverage for these used models - is that correct? If so, I think I'd feel safer buying a used machine - but I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing.
Anyone have any comments/suggestions? Thanks for your help.

    Hi roz,
If the macbook still within 1 year warranty, you still can add apple care before it past that 1 year warranty. But considering it already used, we don't know how the previous owner use it and how long the Hard drive and battery will last.
But why not considering apple refurbished from apple online, or third party authorize reseller like macconnection that offer mail in rebate and free shipping and still you will start fresh a 1 year warranty.
    Good Luck.

  • Buying a used Macbook?

    Merry Christmas everyone!
I'm getting ready to buy a used 2009 Macbook from a buyer on craigslist. It's a 2.13 with 2 GBs RAM and a 120MB hard drive. The buyer seems very reputable and the Macbook appears to be in good shape. I'm planning on meeting with the buyer in a public place later this weekend.
How can I ensure that I'm getting a good computer? Does this model have any issues? Should I bring some diagnostics applications with me? What should I look for?
    Thanks!

  • Buying a new Macbook Pro for music recording, should I upgrade the RAM or Processor?

As the title states, I'm looking into buying a new Macbook (15 inch) for music recording. Should I upgrade the processor or the RAM memory?

Purchase it with the faster CPU.  RAM may be increased later via third party chips at much lower cost if and when required.
    Ciao.

  • Using MacBook Display as External Display

The monitor for my Mac desktop is actually an HDTV and being used as such, and I'd like to move my desktop into a room separate from the living room until I get a new tv, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a way that I could connect my desktops display ports to the Mini-DVI on the MacBook therefore making the MacBook a monitor or something along those lines, preferably without it shutting down?

Oh wow, it looks like it might work, I can't tell but how are they connected, just over a network?
Hopefully I'll be able to share screens with my screenless desktop and activate it.
    Thanks!

  • Looking at buying a used macbook

i have the chance to buy a macbook and would like to know before I hand over the money how can i tell if it was stolen?, I want to know as i dont want any surpise visitors, and what should i ask the person etc etc?

I can think of no certain way to know if a computer has been stolen or not. You can contact the local police in the locality of the seller and ask if that serial number has been reported as stolen, if you can get the serial from the seller, but that's not going to be definite proof since the unit could have been stolen in a different city or even country. I would suggest that at minimum you ask the seller to provide a copy of the purchase receipt, but even one of those could be faked.
My advice is that if you can't trust the seller not to be selling stolen goods, don't buy the computer. Perhaps you could find a reputable dealer, either locally or on line, that deals in used computers that would have a MacBook in your price range.
    Regards.

  • Using macbook display as screen

Ok i was wondering if i could do one of these two things:
    1. Using the connecting for a monitor plug in lets say a xbox with the correct cables and view it. (only so i can record the video)
    2. Simply just import the video from the xbox into the Macbook just like using garage band or something to record the sound of it (already got that worked out)

  • Buying a used MacBook for Premiere Pro CS4

I've been in the market for a MacBook to do some HD video editing.  I  found a deal through someone selling an older (non-Unibody) white  MacBook with the software I need (Adobe CS4 suite).  After researching  this MacBook, which was released in 2008, I'm not sure if it'll perform  the way I need it to.
Here's the specs of what I may be buying (some upgrades have been made):
    2.26Ghz Intel Core2Duo processor(s) with 3MB L2 (per core)cache
    4GB DDR2 PC5300 Crucial RAM
320GB Western Digital Scorpio Black 7200RPM hard drive
From what I understand, the graphics processor is an Intel GMA X3100,  which I have come to understand is not a good enough GPU to do  high-end things like editing and gaming.
    Here's my issue:
The system comes installed with Adobe CS4 suite, and I plan on using  Premiere Pro intensively to edit 720p/1080p video shot with a Canon 7D.   I've read that software like Final Cut Pro 7 requires a  dedicated graphics card and not something integrated like the GMA X3100.
Right now, I can't afford a MacBook Pro, and I need a system soon.  My  question is, will this system be able to handle HD video editing  through Premiere (or comparable software)?
    Any help is appreciate, thanks.

The CPU might get you by, if you do not edit AVCHD, and the RAM might be OK too. However, the single HDD WILL be an issue, especially with HD material. The embedded Intel graphics chip will very, very likely cause issues too. Intel does good chips, BUT they are usually horribly behind on drivers for those.
Personally, I'd look for a much more powerful unit, with at least 3x internal HDD's (or one that can use eSATA externals), and a separate nVidia, or ATI graphics card.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Buying a used macbook checklist?

This will be my first mac computer, what should I look for when I am going to pick it up before I buy it.

I am guessing its the last year model. It has 2.2 ghz, but i think her rounded up from 2.16, it has 2gb or ram and he says the warranty ends on novmeber 19th 2008. I am guessing that is the free year one. Should I get the extended warranty

  • If I buy a used macbook will I still be able to do updates for it even though Im not the original owner?

    to have those right?
p.s Laptop will probably be from places like ebay, kijiji etc..

  • Buying used Macbook Pro w/2 mths warranty left...can I extend w/Applecare?

I'm looking at buying a used Macbook Pro. Warranty runs out in June. I am wondering if I can purchase Applecare as long as I do it before June & if I can, what I need/how I go about doing so? Thanks.

I strongly advise AGAINST buying Apple Care on ebay or anywhere else besides an apple authorized reseller or official apple store.
As long as you buy the AppleCare for MacBook Pro package it will be usable with your machine.
All codes are listen in apple's database, if you try to register an iPod applecare with a macbook pro it will just tell you that it failed. A lot of frauds on ebay, the packaging and codes are just made up and/or already used once before and therefore unusable.
It costs a bit but applecare is definitely worth it.

  • How can I know if the used macbook air I want to buy has been stolen?

    Hi!
I'm looking to buy a used MacBook Air 11 inch - mid 2013. I have the serial number, but I can't find the date of purchase. The seller is not the first owner, he doesn't have the bill or any papers, he doesn't know when the original owner bought it, and he doesn't how to reach him either. When I try to look at the infos on https://selfsolve.apple.com/RegisterProduct.do?productRegister=Y&country=FRA&id= C02M5570F5N7, the site gives me the model and it ask me to confirm de date of purchase. LIke this:
Is it safe to buy this computer or not?
    Thank you!

    I concur with Barry Hemphill.
In the USA, if the property is determined to have been stolen, it must be surrendered by the individual in possession of it with no compensation.
The circumstances you describe are too suspicious.
    Ciao.
