By any chance long living filestream object cause unmanaged memory leak?

Hi,
I am running my application where in I have one file stream object which live for long duration, say its life time is equivalent to life time of application. So by any chance this kind of object causes unmanaged memory leak in the application. Because when
I see private bytes for my application, it is higher than the all bytes in heap counter. That mean there is a unmanaged memory leak. So does such filestream object cause such behaviour?

What makes you think it's the file stream that leaks unmanaged memory? There could be other parts of your applications that do that.
FileStream doesn't usually allocate unmanaged memory. Its internal buffer is a GC heap allocated byte[] array. The only unmanaged memory allocation that I know of in FileStream is a OVERLAPPED structure used for async I/O. If you use BeginRead/Write make
sure you call EndRead/Write correctly, otherwise that structure may be leaked.

FileStream doesn't have anything to do with text encoding and I've told you that before. Next time when I run into a post that makes such a claim I'll simply delete it. This display of ignorance has lasted more than enough.

    Unfortunately there is no 'command' that will show you the location of a memory leak. First I would scrutinizing your code for any obvious 'leaks'. Then, you should obtain some statistics about the usage of your system. One important aspect is how long a HttpSession usually lives. If you have thousands of users that stay online the entire day and never 'time out', and if you have users on the system 24 hours a day, then the sheer number of HttpSessions might be a problem.
    JHeadstart 9.0.x tends to have rather 'heavy' session objects. This can easily be solved by adding some actions to clear up DataObjects and DataObjectSets of previous 'Groups' when entering a new Group. A good place would be between the 'DynamicActionRouter' and the 'ActionRouters'. Just before entering the 'EmployeeActionRouter', you could remove all DataObjects and DataObjectSets that might be left on the Session by actions of the other ActionRouters.
    Also it would be interesting to see if the garbage collector can do its thing when the system is less busy. For instance, if your application has a smaller load during the weekend, what is the memory usage on Sunday at midnight compared to, say, Friday at noon. Has the memory load dropped consistently with the decreased number of online users, or does too much memory stay allocated? If so, then there's more going on than just HttpSession objects.
    If all this does not lead to a solution, I suggest using a profiling tool such as OptimizeIt to investigate the memory usage of the application in detail.

  • Why does system exec cause a memory leak to occur?

    Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't quite figure out why this VI is causing a gigantic memory leak (losing nearly 500K of memory a second). It's a simple system exec call, and I even trivialized everything in order to try and discover the problem.
    Does anyone see a huge problem here? I've tried calling up taskkill afterward as well, though that seemed to make little difference.
    If you don't trust my trivial program (and you probably shouldn't), I've also included the source files for the program - it's a one-line C++ program that returns immediately.
    Any insight is greatly appreciated.

    Try putting a wait - even a 0 second wait - in your loop and see if it makes a difference.  Without a wait, LabVIEW will try to run that loop as fast as possible, possibly so fast that it never yields time to free resources.

  • Web Service data source report causes Java memory leak

    Crystal Report designer fails to preview a report whose data source is a WSDL web service.  This happens when the Java run time process has exceeded the memory limit specified in the CRConfig.xml file.  The Java memory is never released by Crystal Reports until the Crystal Reports Designer is closed.  Version is Crystal reports 2008 (product version 12.2.4.507).
    This error also occurs in the Crystal Reports Viewer when used in a Microsoft .NET application (framework 3.5) referencing CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.dll v12.0.2000.0, CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.Framework.dll v12.0.1100.0, CrystalDecisions.Enterprise.InfoStore.dll v12.0.1100.0, CrystalDecisions.ReportSource.dll v12.0.2000.0, CrystalDecisions.Shared.dll v12.0.2000.0
    I load the ReportDocument object based on the location of the .rpt file and then set the ReportSource object of the CrystalReportViewer control:

Details: Unexpected error".  If you try to refresh the data once again the following errors occur: "Failed to retrieve data from the database." then "Cannot determine the queries necessary to get data for this report. Details: Schema file is invalid   Java heap space".
    Increasing the java heap space in the CRConfig.xml file merely prolongues the onset of this error.
    Is there a service pack or hot fix for this???

    Many thanks for your help.  This solved the issue for our .NET code, however the leak is still present in the report designer.  I was also wondering if you could help further: because of the limits on the java memory process is there a way to ensure that a separate java process is started for each report that is loaded in my report viewers collection?  Essentially the desktop application that i have created uses a tab control to display each type report, so each tab goes through the following code when displaying a report and closing a tab:
    Is there a way to ensure that a different Java process is kicked off each time that I display a different report?  My current code in c# always uses the same Java process so the memory ramps up.  The code to load the report and then dispose of the report through closing the tab (and now the Java process) looks like this:

  • Feedly Causes Monstrous Memory Leaks

    I've waited for a new release (FF31) to see if it had been fixed but nope the issue is still there. In my Feedly I've kept one specific feed populated just to test this. Whenever I try to read that feed Firefox freezes my entire computer not just the browser. It goes from usually around 500mb to well over 2gb in a matter of seconds.
    I've read that addons can affect the browser behavior but even with them disabled the leak still happens.
    I'm not sure where to go from here. Anyone have any pointers or a solution? I really don't want to have to switch to Chrome just to read Feedly...

    I am pretty sure this is not nuts, but I had another user test it and they noticed when loading the particular feed url the memory % spikes up 200K, and most likely it has to do with the images that are loading on that page.

    The array I create is set as a member of a Java object which
    is then returned by the native method. As long as this object
    is in use by my program it's clear that the memory I allocated
    for the array never gets released. But when the Java object is
    no longer used by my program and the garbage collector releases
    the memory occupied by this object, shouldn't it release the memory
    occupied by the array I created in my native method too? Apparently
    this is not the case, do I have to release the Java array for myself?

    I've got an Oracle database upgraded from
    V8.0.5 to V8.1.7 which has a table having one long raw +
    normal columns. I was able to observe distinct memory
    leaks (approx 80K) when using ODBC interface calls (thro C++ code) that referenced a combination of normal & long raw columns in a select statement. However, this leak was not observed when only normal columns were present in the
    select statement. Is there any known restriction for using
    long raw columns with other columns? Or do long raw columns have a known memory leak problem thro ODBC?

    Calling SetLocalTime doesn't cause an exception an the local time is set correctly.
    2. Do you still get the memory leak if you remove all other calls?
    Yes. I have removed any other code, but I also get the memory leak.
    3. Does the memory leak also occur when you do this from native code?
    I have not tried it yet. But I will still make it...

  • Pathological ParallelGC performance w/ big long-lived object (512MB array)

    Hoping to improve performance, we recently added a bloom filter -- backed by a single long-lived 512MB array -- to our application. Unfortunately, it's killed performance -- because the app now spends ~16 of every ~19 seconds in garbage collection, from the moment the big array is allocated.
    My first theory was that the array was stuck in one of the young generations, never capable of being promoted, and thus being endlessly copied back and forth on every minor young collection. However, some tests indicate the big array winds up in "PS Old" right away... which would seem to be a safe, non-costly place for it to grow old. So I'm perplexed by the GC performance hit.
    Here's the tail of a log from a long-running process -- with UseParallelGC on a dual-opteron machine running 32bit OS/VM -- showing the problem:

    The 'PS Old' generation also looks way oversized here -- 1.6G out of 1.8G! -- and the young/tenured starved, although no non-default constraints have been set on generation sizes, and we had hoped the ballyhooed 'ergonomics' would've adjusted generation sizes sensibly over time.
    '-XX:+UseSerialGC' doesn't have the problem, and 'jmap -heap' suggests the big array is in the tenured generation there.
    Any ideas why UseParallelGC is behaving pathologically here? Is this, as I suspect, a bug? Any suggestions for getting it to work better through VM options? (Cap the perm size?)
    Any way to kick a running ParallelGC VM while it's running to resize it's generations more sensibly?
    I may also tweak the bloom filter to use a number of smaller -- and thus more GC-relocatable -- arrays... but I'd expect that to have a slight performance hit from the extra level of indirection/indexing, and it seems I shouldn't have to do this if the VM lets me allocate a giant object in the first place.

    Yes, in my app, the large array is updated constantly.
    However, in the test case below, I'm getting similar behavior without any accesses to the big array at all.
    (I'll file this test case via the bug-reporting interface as well.)

  • Java.lang.StackOverflowError causing long-lived process to stall

    Hi,
    We have a long-lived process that has been working flawlessly without any issues for months. Recently, we've been noticing problems where users are not receiving the task notification emails when the process is invoked and upon checking the Admin UI, we are finding that the process has started stalling in the UserService service to Assign Task to a user. When we restart the application server the process works fine without stalling, but after a certain point in time we began getting the stalled processes again.
    Has anyone else encountered something like this? Any ideas on fixing this issue? The error is as follows:

    Its has a sevirity 2. But since its a weeked nothing will progress until monday.
    Regrading to your commect:"... I think it's related to the data to be upgraded. Because the error occurs right after NLS_LANG checking, possibly there's a relationship to this " .
    The error raised at the beggining of the upgrade. Already in second screen
    where you choose the instance you want to upgrade.
    I dought that in this early steps its already collecting information regarding to actual data.
    Can you suggest from your experience a workaround for this problem ?

    If you applied image adjustments to photos synced to your iOS device from iTunes, a duplicate of each photo will be created in Photos with adjustments applied.

  • Script LiveCycle Web Services long lived

    Hi,
    I have a script to call web services (in fact short-lived livecycle process).
    I want to call a long lived process with script to. So I try to use the asynchronous method with soap.request but I'm lost.
    I wonder if anybody has an example of how to script a call to a long lived process in adobe script because all process use the invoke method.
    Any help would be appreciated.
