Bypassing TCP port 25 restriction (i.e. worst ISP EVER; Mail is not allowed

Hi
The private company that runs my DOES NOT ALLOW Smtp connections on its "hi speed internet connection".
Meaning that Mail cannot function and I have to check via webmail.
I'm serious.
Their FAQ states:
Can I use email clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express to send and receive emails?
No, you will only be able to use web browser based email such as Hotmail or Gmail; this is due to limitations (on TCP port 25) which have been implemented to protect you against other computer users sending unsolicited bulk emails (SPAM) via your computer.
Does anyone know a way to get around this as I NEED the functionality of Mail.....
Also,
Are all British ISPs this ridiculous?
Dieing to find a solution to this....... Many Many Many Many Thanks
PS. I already paid extra ($250USD) to enable 'super' internet which doesnt throttle VOIP, STREAMING, gaming, P2P etc.
Luke

Beginning January 1, 2006 Port 587 has been standardized as the port to use for authenticated SMTP servers although most will still work with Port 25 as well. More and more ISPs are blocking port 25 as various jurisdictions are holding them responsible for spam and/or viruses originating on their network. With unauthenticated SMTP anyone can send using that server whether they have an account or not. So the ISPs block that port with the sole exception of their own SMTP server so they can scan the messages for spam and viruses. With an authenticated SMTP server where a valid account id and password are required to send messages the provider of the server assumes the responsibility for scanning all traffic through their server thus relieving the ISP of the liability.
Whether you think this is a big brother step or not, with estimates that spam on the internet is running as high as 70% of all email traffic, if it weren't for restrictions like this email would rapidly become an unusable tool. The only annoying thing I have found about this is how few ISP Tech Support people know about this. To often their solution is "you can only use another email provider through their webmail interface."

  • VLANs 133-134 on Interface port-channel10 are being suspended. (Reason: Vlan is not allowed on Peer-link)

I just added 2 vlans Port-channel10 on two of my Nexus 5000's that go from the to a 6509 Catalyst switch. I get this error when I do a show log:(VLANs 133-134 on Interface port-channel10 are being suspended. (Reason: Vlan is not allowed on Peer-link) When I do a sh int trunk I see Po10 (int Eth1/3) that Vlans Err-disabled on Trunk. Another odd thing when I do an spanning tree summary neith 133 or 134 is added in to the summary? Why would spanning-tree be ignoring these two new vlans?
    They are configured as so:
    interface port-channel10
    description "vpc 10 eth1/3 to 6506 po10 ten5/4"
    switch port mode trunk
    switchport trunk native vlan 999
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 130.,133-134,139,145,155,160-175,239,242,254,999
    vpc10
What can I do to get 133 and 134 vlans to stop erroring on Port-channel 10 on both Nexus 5000's?

Firstly I should say I have not used Nexus switches so the following advice should be treated with caution.
Have you added the same vlans to the allowed vlans on your vPC peer link. That is what the error message seems to be telling you ie. they are not currently allowed.
They need to be allowed otherwise the vlans are suspended which is what is happening.
As I say I haven't used these switches so I can't say for sure if there is any downtime/disruption when you modify the allowed list but I think that is your problem from what I can see.

    Hi!
I understand that Computer 1 is synced and you see something like this when you access the Sync Tab under Preferences: https://support.mozilla.com/media/uploads/gallery/images/2011-01-27-15-46-25-9c0352.png
And in Computer 2 you get a window similar to this: https://support.mozilla.com/media/uploads/gallery/images/compcode.jpg
But when you click on Add Device the following window doesn't appear: https://support.mozilla.com/media/uploads/gallery/images/2011-01-27-15-46-48-5f59d1.png
Is this correct? If so, please let me know what you see (a screenshot will be handy).
You can also set up the second computer following this instructions: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How%20to%20sync%20Firefox%20settings%20between%20computers#w_what-if-im-not-near-my-first-computer

  • ACL filter tcp port

    Dear Expert,
I study the ACL to filter (stop) the tcp port from below URL
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk361/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080100548.shtml
In the section of "Allow Only Internal Networks to Initiate a TCP Session", grateful if someone would enlighten me the usage of "established"

What is different if the ACL is changed to following:

Worst phone EVER.  DO NOT BUY.
    * Constantly reboots
    * Constantly drops data connection
    * Totally ignores third-party email for about an hour on its own which is absolutely CRITICAL.
    * Will only get email immediately when its powered down, then up.
    * 3G coverage blows.
I HATE AT&T and APPLE, but I miss my iPhone already and its only been a week.  But it WORKED, ALWAYS.
They should renamer this the ROID X, because it is a PITA ***!
I had a bag phone in the '90's that worked better than this.

  • MAC Floods ISP with TCP ports and is shutdown when count reaches 200

I was told by ISP provider that my MAC floods them with massive amount of TCP ports when I open a single Safari or FireFox web page. When I am NOT connected, the TCP port count is ABOUT 3 with a Windows XP using a IE connection to APPLE.com PLUS AN SSL CONNECTION. When I open the same web page ON MY MAC, the count INSTANTLY jumps to 70+ and if I connect to another page it jumps to well over 100. If I leave pages open and jump to several different sites, I soon exceed the MAX TCP port limit of 200 and everyone on our home network is pretty much shutdown. Since it is a wireless connection to the ISP, the have to limit TCP ports to 200 per antenna connection. WHY DOES MY MAC USE SO MANY TCP PORTS FOR A SINGLE BROWSER CONNECTION?
The home network uses LinkSys WRT54G router and WAP54G configured as Wireless Repeater. Windows does not have this problem. I do not have this problem anywhere else but on this wireless ISP connection. How do I remedy this problem?

Here is a trap of opening a browser page:

  • Video/Screen Sharing via 3G connection not possible - port restrictions?

I'm running Jabber-based iChat AV 5.0.3 sessions from my MBP connected to the Internet via a wireless USB modem 3G/UMTS (German Telekom D1 network). My buddies are connected to the Internet via regular broadband connections (DSL). I have set up a hosted Jabber server via Dreamhost (without SSL, port 5222 used).
    Status Quo:
    - Contact status of remote Jabber users shows up properly. All buttons (text chat, screen sharing, video) are available (not greyed out) on both sides.
    - Text chat works fine.
    - Video chat and screen sharing can be invoked from both sides (confirmation window shows up), but after confirmation the initiation process doesn't finish successfully. The video/screen sharing session doesn't run. *iChat AV shows a message indicating that it doesn't receive an answer from the remote user device.* If the iChat session is initiated from a buddy's computer, the buddy gets the same message respectively.
    - For testing purposes, I changed the internet connection on my MBP from the mobile 3G USB modem to a regular *DSL broadband connection (same ISP, German Telekom). In this scenario, video/audio calls and screen sharing work flawlessly!* Therefore, I assume that the problems in 3G connection mode is caused by the ISP (German Telekom) blocking/restricting ports required by iChat AV for initiating the video call and streaming the data on their 3G network.
Is there any way to bypass ISP restrictions, by either changing specific iChat AV port settings on both ends (client devices) or by port forwarding? If yes, which settings should I change? Unfortunately, it's couldn't find any document indicating which ports are opened/allowed by German Telekom's 2G/3G (GSM/UMTS) network.
Below is an excerpt of the error message produced by iChat AV:

    Hi,
Does this 3G device have any set up functions that are on your Mac ?
If it does not it is likely that it is wide open to all Port (65535 of them).
I presume that in System Preferences > Network you see a Public IP when using this device ?
Again this would tend to pint to all the ports being open.
Is there anything on the ISP's web site that suggests this device is unsuitable to be used with VoIP or SIP connections ?
VoIP (Voice over the Internet) uses the SIP connection process the way iChat does.
Most likely the issues is the way packets are sent.
When you do a download, for instance, do you find the speed increases in the first few minutes ?
When some data packets are sent over the Internet the next one is not sent until confirmation that the first has arrived.
This Latency effects Point to Point WiFi (antenna to Dish on House) and satellite connections mostly particularly when it is a two way thing.
It can effect Mobile/Cell phone type connections.
What sort of Speeds are you getting on the 3G device ?
    http://www.speedtest.net/
Do these seem to get faster as the time proceeds ? (this can be difficult to spot).
The Log mentions one end being at just over 2Gbps although it does not make it clear which end.
As the Remote end is the end that reports "Router: Port Restricted" and it works over standard DSL we have to presume they have the ports open.
You could try restricting iChat 's Bandwidth in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section to 500kbps (try it at both ends)
If that does not work try 200kbps
This may stop iChat from trying to send data too Fast for the Network Connections.
Realistically there are a few too many variables here.
It could be Speed of data throughout at the Initiation point. (Slow Start up of data transfer)
It could be an Internal setting preventing SIP.
It could be that the 3G network sends and receives data by different routes.
(I have seen this once when a ISP was repairing some Cabling. To maintain end user speeds they managed their own network to split Incoming and outgoing data to the end point.)
iChat does not like this as it checks the IPs and the Hops (number of intermediate stages/servers) and if the data is different it will not connect (Man in the Middle attack protection).
I can't remember the last time I knew of someone being successful with either an 3G USB dongle or a 3G phone as Modem (internet Sharing).
Despite my ideas I think you will be unlucky and this will not work.

  • Tomcat Servlet - TCP Port Already in Use?

My problem is that tomcat/servlet is not releasing its TCP port after my servlet closes the port. Next time a servlet tries to use the port it gets an error "Port already in use". Using netstat I can see the port is still in use. If I stop tomcat and restart it, the port is released. I have not had this sort of problem writing C programs that use sockets.
My setup is Fedora Core 6 with JDK1.5_14 and Tomcat 5.5.26. I know it's not the latest, but sockets and streams have been around for a long time.
Actual implementation uses a trivial javaserver page to instantiate a class to create/accept connection from a client (JApplet). After connection, it starts a thread to receive data. I am using ServerSocket(), InputStreamReader(), and OutputStreamWriter(). On ServerSocket I set ReuseAddress to true.
I have try/catch on all my I/O and use tomcat context log for error and OK messages. Data transfer is perfect. Detect close by client works. In the context log I see close of streams and ServerSocket occur with no exceptions. Then, I manually close the jsp window. No indication of any problems. If I use different port 2nd time (e.g. 50001) it all works perfect. If I use my default (50000) again, servlet gets an error during bind, "Port already in use".

Actual implementation uses a trivial javaserver page to instantiate a class to create/accept connection from a client (JApplet). Bleah! Don't use a JSP for that. Use a servlet at worst. At best use a Servlet to start some other socket manager class which you can/have tested outside the Servlet Container environment.

Please advise or referShow some code. If you just want some generic advice it would be to close the port, as soon as you don't need it anymore. But you know that. Without any further code I think that is about all that can be said.
P.S. Make the code as small as possible, compilable, but still demonstrating the problem. Also see: [this tutorial as an example...|http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-1996/jw-12-sockets.html?page=1]

  • 922 TCP ports closed!

    Hi All,
Nmap gave me some disturbing news last night; I have 922 TCP ports closed on my computer, including stuff like Trinoo, Elite and some other trojans that I would think are Windows threats only. Even though the ports are closed (I've got firewall enabled), I have no idea how and why they appeared on my computer. I have a wireless router, but don't know if that matters. Thanks 4 your help.

    Hi,
as you said, the ports are closed, this does mean that they are inaccessible so you don't have to worry. Additionally, when you're sitting behind a wireless router, it's own firewall should protect you from outside access. Anyway, it would be helpful if you could provide the whole output of nmap and tell us if you've scanned the IP which belongs to your local network or the IP which was assigned to your wireless router by your ISP.
    Cheers,
    ulrik

  • SPA9000 TCP ports

I have a strange problem with an SPA9000 and I am not sure if it is me.
Have set up lines 1 thru 4 to use TCP as SIP transport and using 5060 for line 1, 5061 for line 2 etc.  If I run a port scan to the device the only TCP port I see open is 80 and the only UDP ports open are 53, 67, 5080 thru 5084 and 6060.
If I set up lines 1 thru 4 to use UDP as SIP transport then ports 5060 thru 5063 appear as open UDP ports in the scan.
The question I have is : Why can I not see these ports as open TCP ports when lines 1 thru 4 have TCP as SIP transport?
An answer would be most appreciated
    Thanks

First let me explain the difference between TCP and UDP. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is the most commonly used protocol on the Internet. The reason for this is because TCP offers error correction. When the TCP protocol is used there is a "guaranteed delivery." This is due largely in part to a method called "flow control." Flow control determines when data needs to be re-sent, and stops the flow of data until previous packets are successfully transferred. This works because if a packet of data is sent, a collision may occur. When this happens, the client re-requests the packet from the server until the whole packet is complete and is identical to its original.
UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is anther commonly used protocol on the Internet. However, UDP is never used to send important data such as webpages, database information, etc; UDP is commonly used for streaming audio and video. The reason UDP is faster than TCP is because there is no form of flow control or error correction. The data sent over the Internet is affected by collisions, and errors will be present.
Now knowing the difference between TCP and UDP, UDP is used mainly due to its speed over TCP. Frames of data should be delivered the fastest way possible to that the other party to achieve real time communication. Just imagine if TCP is used in VoIP. If a message is having some packet loss, it won’t send the message and will be requesting it again and again until no error is detected thus requiring a lot of bandwidth speed and the down fall is that communication will be slow communication between parties or even worst none at all.

  • How to get the number of bytes at TCP port

    Hi all,
How to get the number of bytes to read at the TCp port...as someone had suggested in some forum we do read the number of bytes first and then pass this...
but we get a problem when we have FF data in this...because then it sends 2 FF data...and cause of this we skip the last data...is there any solution for the same?

    Hi
In LabVIEW you don't have the same property as in serail port.
You havn't "Byte at TCPIP port".
if you developp a protocol, one soltion, is to send the size to read.

I can offer some suggestion about one of your port numbers. TCP port 49 is used for TACACS. If you are using TACACS for authentication, or authorization, or accounting then we know why port 49 is open and blocking TCP49 will prevent TACACS from working with your router.
I have no insights or suggestions about the other port numbers that you mention.

  • Smbclient wants to connect to TCP port 139

On my Powerbook, using Little Snitch under certain conditions (undetermined) I get the following message repeatedly, I am not connected to a network (except for Airport) or printer:
The application "smbclient" wants to connect to 192.168.131.65 on TCP port 139 (netbios-ssn)
What is this all about - thanks.
    PB G4 Al 17"

Airport is as much of a network as Ethernet is. Port 139 is the normal port for SMB connections. (At the terminal, try "grep 139 /etc/services".) What you want to do is figure out where your Powerbook was connecting to a Windows file or printer server on network 192.168.0.0 or 192.168.131.0. Are either of those the network address for your Airport network? You can see this in your Network settings.
Login Items is the first place to look for an alias that might trigger an automated mount, but another application (other than the Finder) could be looking for a file server, too (as another posted mentioned). You could try to grep for "192.168.131.65" in all the files in your Preferences folder, except if you have 10.4 they might all be binary now and you'd have to convert them to xml text first, using plutil (again in Terminal).
