  • T410s with Windows 7 and additional internal Hard Drive with Windows XP. How do I make them work?

    Hi Everybody,
I have had my T410s for 9 months and I love it. No problems at all. I was a contractor so I could use whatever laptop I wanted. Now I work for a big company that issued me a Thinkpad T410 with Windows XP. Now the T410 model has a huge heavy battery compared to the T410s. An ex-colleague of mine used to have a T60p with 2 internal Hard Drives one with Windows XP and one with Windows 7, and he could boot the computer with the Hard Drive of choice.
Does anybody know how to do that? I already got the bay and the Windows XP Hard Drive inside the T410s.
    Thank you in advance
    Nicky

Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • Installing Leopard and new internal hard drive at same time, best plan?

Ok so basically the title explains what I need to do. I am currently travelling in Europe, and returning home to New York on Tuesday night. I have a new hitachi 250gb HD and will have Leopard waiting for me at home when I arrive, and will get right to doing this installation. I am writing on the discussion boards here because I am hoping the users here can give me their opinions on what is the best plan of action to do this whole install?
So what I was thinking was, I should remove the hard drive that's already inside, put it into an external enclosure. Then, put my new blank 250gb hard drive into the macbook pro, close up the computer, then put the Leopard OSX install disk, and do a completely fresh install of Leopard. Then, after installing (or during installing?) I should run the migration assistant program to get all my files and settings etc. transferred over to the new internal hard drive with Leopard on it, from the old hard drive that will be plugged in from an enclosure as an external drive.
Will this plan have any problems that I am not aware of? Is there a better process for doing this task? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I am anxious to get my new hard drive into the computer because my 160gb is filling up, and dying so badly to use the new Leopard!!

You could also put the new disk in the external enclosure, partition it using disk utility. Then make a clone of your current hard disk to the new external one using the restore feature in disk utility. Boot from the external disk and Install Leopard as an upgrade keeping all your files and setting. check everything is all running how I should and swap drives over. That's another option for you.

  • I purchased Apple TV. I had to upgrade my OS to Lion which I did. I cannot get Lion to open because time machine is backing up to two hard drives, my external hard drive and my internal hard drive.  How do I just get the backups going to the external? thx

I have a desktop Mac.  I bought Apple tv and wanted to connect my photos to the tv.  I learned that I had to upgrade my OS as I didn't have icloud capability.  I purchased and downloaded Lion.  I cannot open it however, because when I go to select the hard drive to install Lion onto, the dialogue box says that I cannot open it in either my external hard drive or the internal hard drive because of the backups to time machine.  I have tried the 'fix' of moving the backup folder to the trash and then putting it on the desktop, but I still can't access either one of the drives to install Lion.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

The current OS is Mountain Lion 10.8.3, so I if the purchase was recent, that is what you should have.
It should be possible to see what disk space is being used by opening the Disk Utlity in the Applications>Utilities folder.   It looks like both disks are set as TM disks:
If you have Time Machine backup of both the internal and external disks and want to rationalise the system to only backup one, then set the TM preferences>options to exclude volumes as required:
When you download the installer from the Apple Store (MAS) it will come up with a dialogue to run it.  It will then ask which disk you wish to install the system on.  Is this where you have got to, before it says they are both unavailable?

  • *Internal Bay Drive or External Lacie?

    Hi All
Need some advice, which one to get...
Buying a macPro and was wondering about the pro's and cons of an extra bay drive. If i get an extra bay drive I cannot take just my drive and work else where unless they have a macPro. I just need advise should I get an extra bay for the macPro or get an external Lacie. I will be using the mac for editing media in FCP.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    teeFX

Why not both? You are going to want to use your drive bays, and you are going to want external drives for backup and storage and off-line. Only thing I question is whether to go with LaCie.
Also, I prefer external SATA whenever possible. You can add a dual bay SATA case and PCI bracket for two unused SATA ports (hidden away). Pick up NewerTech kit $24.
Or there are FW/SATA cases that use SATA drives.

I would plan to add three 500GB WD RE2 drives.

  • Cable and caddy for second drive

I'm planning on upgrading my laptop by adding an ssd, but in order to do so I need an extra cable and caddy, does anyone know what I should look for? And where? I live in the Netherlands, so that makes it a lot harder to find such things. My model is HP ENVY 17-2100ed (LS565EA)

  • G4 933 and Three Internal IDE Drives?

I have a G4 933 with the 60mb factory drive and a 80mb slave installed on top with the "U" bracket. Can I install a third internal drive on the same ribbon cable as the SuperDriv? Is this cable on a different IDE channel?
I can't seem to find this info in the specifications. Also, in searching the posts, there was some information about using drive >120mb on the G4. How do I tell if my G4 supports these larger dirves?
    Please advise, thanks!

    Hello ksk,
.... And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I think you get an affirmative answer to both your questions, but the simpler and more satisfactory solution is to get a controller card that plugs into a PCI slot and allows the use of up to four more drives without limit as to size. For $55 or thereabouts, you can get an Acard 6280M(for Mac) 100/133 ATA controller card from http://www.newegg.com/ and positively choke yourself on storage capacity. A second advantage is that the controller card permits slightly faster transfer of data, especially if you use faster ATA 100/133 drives.
Another thought would be to go to a serial ATA controller card (and drives), as they tend to be cheaper in the larger capacities.

  • I opened my Mac to upgrade it and broke something near the optical bay drive. I don't have apple care, can I bring it to geek squad? Or will Apple fix it? How much?

HELP! I broke something in my MacBook Pro by opening it up and trying to upgrade my optical bay drive to an SSD and my RAM and broke a cable near the optical bay drive. I bought it from best buy and my step dad was too stubborn when we first purchased it to buy best buy care or the apple care. Will Apple fix it? Will geek squad fix it? How much would it cost? Also my battery is starting to give out before this. I have taken the cable out that connects the battery to the motherboard and that worked, but how much would that cost to? I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012 13"

Even had stubborn stepdad bought AppleCare, it would not have covered damages caused by your mucking about inside the unit.
As we are all end-users like you and not professional computer repair peple, we can't estimate prices, especially if we don't know what broke.

  • Restoring second internal hard drive from time machine

I have a second internal hard drive for media files that I have backed up with time machine, in addition to my main first drive. I switched out this drive for a larger one and want to restore the files on the second drive only, without effecting those on my main drive. I tried going into time machine and pulling in the past copy of the smaller drive into the larger drive but this said it would take 54 hours last night, and 50 when I woke up this morning. Is there a way to do this faster or automatically I am unaware of?
    Thanks.

no, there isn't. you are doing it properly if I understood you correctly. you should name the new drive the same as the old one. then start TM and scroll back in time when the old drive was backed up. select that whole drive in the TM window and hot 'restore". I don't know why it's taking so long. try repairing the TM drive. another option would be to forget TM and clone the old drive to the new one. you need and extra internal bay for that or an external enclosure for the old drive.
    Thanks.

  • My internal hard drive is not recognized by the leopard installer disk

i just got my leopard delivered this morning, and have just put it in, every thing is going well, until it comes to the screen where you select the hard drive you want to install leopard on, and my internal hard drive does not show up, however other drives do (like my external hard drives and usb sticks).
really hope someone can help! thanks

I am having the same problem with my MBP with Leopard. I get a flashing question mark on startup, and have repaired/permissions and my startup disk doesn't show up. I reset PRAM, and then ran permissions again to no avail. If it really is Spotlight just indexing, Apple should tell us that in their technical documents. If anyone has any other solutions, that would be appreciated.

  • Can I set Time Machine to backup both my hard drive and an external hard drive?

Hi. I've been working with a lot of family video lately and my internal hard drive has filled up significantly. iMovie doesn't seem to have a good archiving facility like Adobe InDesign which I use at work were all the relevant files are gathered together into one folder. Apple advised me to relocate my movie files to an external hard drive and herein lies my query.
Is there a way for me to set Time Machine to backup both my iMac's internal drive and the external hard drive that would contain my movie files? I've been using Time Machine for my backups for a few years now, but backing up the external as well has me stumped. If Time Machine could be used then all the necessary file accociations etc would be safely backed up as well - that's why I don't want to have to manually backup the external.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks so much Pondini!!  You just quickly answered a question that none of the Mac people in 3 stores or Apple Care have been able to answer. If you can format it HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
I'm not too surprised about the Apple Stores, as they don't get much training on Time Machine.  But AppleCare sure ought to know.
Oh...what about if the external drive is an array...like a Drobo with it's own proprietary formatting...I guess that would not work...??
I've never used a Drobo.  A number of folks here have used them as their Time Machine drives, but I don't recall seeing anyone try to back one up with TM, so can't say for sure.  But if you can format it as HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
At least part of the reason is, Time Machine uses the File System Event Store, a hidden log of changes that OSX keeps on each Mac-formatted disk/partition, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed-up.  See How Time Machine works its Magic for details.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of backing-up multiple volumes with Time Machine.
However, even if it will work, that may not be your best strategy, depending on your circumstances:
Since Time Machine keeps copies of things you've changed or deleted, the destination needs to be considerably larger than the data being backed-up.  How much larger varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, but a general "rule of thumb" is, it needs at least twice the space to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
If you have a large internal HD, fairly full, plus a large external HD, and the files on the external don't change frequently, you might want to use Time Machine for the internal, and a different app to a different disk or partition, on a different schedule, for the external.  Especially if space is a consideration, you might not need to keep previous versions of files on the externals.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some alternatives.

  • How to repair internal hard drive failure?

Well so I have a new mac book pro 13 with retina and the internal hard drive just disappear after doing a time machine backup. When I turn it on it comes the Recovery 10.10.1 disk and just that, normally you could do a hard drive partition like ''Macintosh HD'' from the internal hard drive that is like ''500GB toshiba blah blah'' something like that, but the thing is that in disk Utility the only thing I see is ''Macintosh HD'' and no internal drive, and also when you select it and you go to the Partition tab everything is grayed out, btw there is just two tabs the partiton one and the first aid one? I don't care if i lose the data on my hard drive because it was new. what should I do?

    H. In the disk utilities the base system drive that you see is the recovery partition. You should be seeing above the base drive two other drives .One is the main drive, that should name the drive and it's size as in 250 G The one directly below that is the partitioned drive that the operating system is on. Clicking on the upper  drive should show down at the bottom right as GUID  and should say S.M.A.R.T status verified. Try starting up by holding down the option or the option r key and see if you go to the recovery partition. Which should have option for disk utilities  terminal and recovery and I believe internet.
