Calculating glyph length

Hello,
I want to know if there is a possiblity to calculate the length of a given String with all Font-parameters given as well without drawing the glyph on a screen device.
I need to find out the length of the String in pixels in order to calculate the according number of lines of a text container that has a specified width and height. I can calculate the length right now but I want to get rid of the need to draw the String on screen because this causes some problems sometimes when a second process needs the screendevice simultanuosly.
Any help welcome.
Thank you!

I am not sure i understand, but my be you mean:
     Label l = new Label();
     FontMetrics fm = l.getFontMetrics(new Font("",0,19));
     int length = fm.stringWidth("String");

  • Calculating the length of the longest side of a polygon

    If you want to calculate the length of the longest side of a polygon -- for example a rectangle -- how can that be done using the standard geometrical functions of spatial in an oracle 10g2 database?
    SDO_LENGHT delivers the outline of the polygon. If have looked at the LRS functions, but could not come up with a combination that delivers me what I am looking for. Any suggestion is appreciated.

    What do you see as the longest side?
    Is that the longest stretch between 2 consecutive vertices?
    If this is the case, this sql could be of help, which could need maybe some optimisation and extension (calculates straigth distance between 2 consecutive vertices).

  • Calculating line length in Java

    Hi all;
    I've been using LineBreakMeasurer & AttributedString to measure line lengths. However, I now need to take into account:
    Small Caps
    Scaling (making each character thinner/wider).
    Spacing (adding/subtracting space after each character).
    Hyphenation, where line breaks can occur at specific places within words.
    Is there a way to do this using Java? The two fundamental things I need to get is:
    How long is a passed in string.
    For a passed in string and length, how many characters of the string fits in that length.
    I can do this using LineBreakMeasurer & AttributedString and calling it character by character. But is there a better way?
    thanks - dave

    Hi, Have you had a look at the FontMetrics class? That might be an option.

  • Calculating Clip Length . . .

    Working with figures has never been my strong point (to put it very mildly) so can anyone help me with this:
    (Don't laugh)!
    Let's say I have a clip which is 108 frames long - and I want to slow it down to 80%. How many frames will it be at that speed?
    Is there an easy way to calculate it?
    I'm sure there must be, but my mind goes numb!
    Thanks

    > Actually Cap'n - that's not quite right. New Frame Count = Original Frame Count divided by Rate Change, so you divide by .8
    108 / .8 = 135
    Well, if I get a clip of 108 frames in my FCP Timeline and change the speed to 80% it becomes 134 frames long - so that's aboout right - but surely the Rate Change would be 20% - or .2 ?
    > EDIT - to get a little more indepth, 80% = 4/5 so you multiply by 5/4 or 1.25
    Sorry, Patrick, you completely lost me here - are these fractions?
    Thanks for your help though - I'm useless with figures.

  • Record Sizing Calculation

    First of all, apologies for using he wrong forum. Why isn't there a "Database" forum?
    I am currently trying to size a number of tables for a client. From dim and distant genetic memory I think that the following worse-case calculations apply:
    Length of NUMBER column (in bytes) = 1+((max column length)/2)
    Length of VARCHAR2 column (in bytes) = 1 + (max column length)
    Length of CHAR column (in bytes) = (max column length)
    Length of DATE column (in bytes) = 7
    Record header length = 3 bytes
    So, for a table, if:
    N = the number of NUMBER columns
    n = the total length of all NUMBER columns
    V = the number of VARCHAR2 columns
    v = the total length of all VARCHAR2 columns
    D = the number of DATE columns
    c = the total length of all CHAR columns
    Then the maximum record length =
    3 + (N+(n/2)) + (V+v) + (D*7) + C
    Can anyone confirm this (or suggest the correct formula)?
    Also, is the calculation any different for 9i?

  • PDF standard CJK font confusion

    Hi,
    I'm trying to embed Chineese, Japanese en Korean text in my PDF's. To avoid embedding the fonts (or font subsets), I am using the standard PDF fonts form Acrobat's font packs.
    I did manage to get the text in, but the width of the character is all wrong. It must have something to do with the CIDSystemInfo or the Encoding, but I can't figure it out.
    I am reading the widths from the AdobeSongStd-Light.otf font, and I am using the same widths for calculating the length of the text.
    Below are some fragments of my PDF. If required, I can post the PDF as well.
    It would be great if someone could point me into the right direction.
    Regards, and thanks in advance,

    Because the Chinese characters looked OK, I figured this part was fine. GBK-EUC-H, GBKp-EUC-H and GBK2K-H encodings give good results, but that's another issue.
    The problem was the mapping of my width table to the character codes:

    I thought the CIDSystemInfo was wrong, since that was the only part I didn't get. It turned out that my width table was wrong. I build a table of character code's VS widths. What I needed to do, was make a table of glyph indices VS widths:

  • UK Payroll - Local Government Teacher's Absence Scheme

    Hi Gurus,
    I am facing an issue with configuration of Local Government Teacher's Absence Scheme ( UK).
    Please let me know if anybody has worked on this.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Anupama

    Hi Surya,
    The issue is that we are facing is that  the Local Government Teacher's Absence Scheme that is configured  is  currently not taking into account the previous service while calculating occupational sick pay (OSP).
    Actually when an employee joins a new organization having previous local gov. experience, the previous service start date is maintained in IT0041 and according to statutory requirements the total absence entitlemet ( Self certified & doctor certified sickness etc)  should take the previous service date into account while calculating the length of service and on the basis of the length of service the entitlement should be calculated.
    Currently the system is not taking into account the previous service date for length of service calculatioatn for the first four months of service with the new organization, only after four months the previous service is being considered.
    The return value of feature GlOSS ( for calculating seniority ) is EBED3 ( D3 is the date type on IT0041).
    I have checked the config part, everything seems to be fine, request you to please help me with this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anupama

  • "DBSL does not support extended connect protocol" while configuring SSFS

    Hi, I'm trying to configure ssfs on ERP EHP7 on HANA Database system. Doing it with this guide - SSFS Implementation for Oracle Database
    But when I'm trying to test connection with r3trans I got following error in the log:
    4 ETW000  [     dev trc,00000]  read_con_info_ssfs(): DBSL does not support extended connect protocol

  • New to pl/sql and need help with procedure

    Hello there, I got two tables STAFF and BONUS which are not related by any constraints
    STAFF
    ID_NUMBER HIREDATE SALARY BONUS
    100020 12-MAY-03 13600
    100021 04-NOV-01 30000
    100022 08-APR-02 28000
    100023 08-APR-02 24000
    BONUS
    PERCENTAGE MORE_THAN_YEARS
    0.1 3
    0.15 5
    0.3 7
    0.45 9
    0.5 12
    I am trying to create a procedure that would calculate bonus based on years of employment according to bonus table.
    If employees sysdate -hiredate is greater than 5, he would get salary*0.15%....
    I created this procedure, but I got stuck here.
    I calculated the length of employment for every soldier using cursor in a loop, but I don't know how to get values from bonus table and connect them together.
    Please help me!
    create or replace
    procedure bonus_staff
    as
    cursor c1 is select *from staff;
    bon real;
    begin
    FOR ITEM IN C1
    LOOP
    bon := FLOOR(months_BETWEEN(SYSDATE,ITEM.hiredate)/12)*
    update staff
    set bonus = bon
    where id_number = ITEM.id_number;
    exit when c1%notfound;
    end loop;
    end;
    Thanks in advance..

    update staff
    set bonus = (select percentage
    from bonus
    where more_than_years = (select max(more_than_years)
    from bonus
    where more_than_years <= FLOOR(months_BETWEEN(SYSDATE,staff.hiredate)/12)
    You can do this in pure SQL, which operates on a set, so no PL/SQL is required.

  • 30 GB video iPod memory question

    Ok, I just got the 30 GB video iPod a few days ago. Before I bought it when I was looking at the specifications on the apple store, it said that it could hold 75 hours of video. I would like to know if this could possibly be correct, because when I looked at how much space just one sixteen minute film took up, it said it took up over 75 megabytes, and if this is how much space just one little movie takes up, than it must take up a whole gigabyte for something, say, 25 minutes long, so with the amount of space that videos take up,could they possibly still hold up to 75 hours?
    * Also, for anyone out there that might happen to know this, do any of y'all know how much memory a twenty episode TV show season (about twenty four minutes per episode) would take up?
    Dell   Windows XP

    If a sixteen minute song takes up 75MB, it takes up 4.6875MB for each minute. Multiplying this figure by 60 gives you 281.25MB an hour, and continuing the calculation produces 21093.75MB for 75 hours, which works out to about 20.6GB. A 30GB iPod will have roughly 27.8GB of usable storage.
    Calculating the length of a season with the same figures gives you 2250MB total.
