Calculating Mileage & Breaking For Loop

Hey all,
I'm trying to create an application that calculates total mileage traveled and subtracts the initial mileage reading on the odometer. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Also, can you tell me how I can break the For loop by inputting a negative number or typing in "stop"? I pasted the code below. Thanks for your help!
import java.util.Scanner;
public class Lab4{
     public static void main(String args[]){
          int miles[] = new int[10];
          double gallons[] = new double [10];
          double mpg[] = new double [10];
          Scanner kb = new Scanner(System.in);
          int count=0;
          double counter=0.0;
          for (int i = 0; i < 1; i++){
               System.out.println("What is the reading on the odometer?");
               miles[i] = kb.nextInt();
               if (i > 0)
                    count = count + miles;
          for (int i = 1; i < 9; i++){
               System.out.println("How many miles have you traveled since last filling up?");
               miles[i] = kb.nextInt();
               if (i > 0);
                    count = count + miles [i] - miles[0];
          System.out.print("You have traveled " + count);
          System.out.println(" miles");

I think you should go back two steps and learn the differences between objects, primitive types and arrays.

    Okay. Accpeting that the design is not favorable and not advantageous when my program expands. I have begin to follow producer/consumer programming architecture.
    Please find the attached program which is a simple producer consumer with event structure. I wonder how could I stop looping around the producer and consumer loops over and over again. I am pretty sure that this ENQUEUE ELEMENT loops back to the consumer loop and starts from begining.
    I hope my first program in PC architecture with State machine and Event structure is correct.

  • Opening PDF in IE "breaking" for loop

    Hi,
    I have a dynamic PDF that is uploaded to a website.  When the PDF opens, the user has to fill in certain fields before clicking the "Next" button.  Upon clicking the Next button, I have a JavaScript function that sets certain fields access to required and then runs a for loop to check if any are empty.  The next event is setting those fields access back to optional. Lastly, a popup window refers the user to the empty fields (fields are shaded red, but not their borders).
    The problem occurs for one user who is using IE9 and has Reader X installed on his machine.  It only occurs when he opens it directly with his browser, if he downloads it to his desktop first he encounters no problem.  But using the browser makes filling in the fields on Page 1 glitchy, and then the loop doesn't work properly when he hits "Next".  The event setting the fields back to optional doesn't seem to be firing, and the popup never comes up.  So he's left with fields with red borders-which should not be happening.
    Any idea what could be causing this bug only when accessing via browser? I can't replicate the problem on any of my browsers, even after disabling Adobe add-ons in IE.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Displaying data in chart for each iteration of FOR loop

    Hi Flex experts,
    I'm coding an Actionscript routine that has a series of
    complex calculations within a for loop. I would like to display
    some of the calculation results in a Flex chart at the end of each
    iteration of the loop. Thus far, I can only get the chart to
    display the results from the last iteration, but not any of the
    preceding iterations.
    Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dean

    Please have look at callLater method. You can call your
    chart-updating method thru callLater and that might help.
    Otherwise, can you share some of your code in the loop?

  • How does array obtained in a for loop?

    Hi
    I went previosly my question as below.
    "Firstly thanks for help,
    I want to obtain array from the y value calculated in the for loop .at every loop, and in same for loop these different arrays are operated.so with one for loop the calculates are obtained.
    Thanks"
    Now could you give me one sample program?
    Thanks a lot.

    LabVIEW ships with a variety of examples. Search through those (hint: look under fundamentals>>arrays) to find what you are looking for.

  • Need help with a For loop that uses a Break statement

    I need to create a for loop which counts down from 100-50 and divides the number being counted down by a counter. Can anyone help me?

  • Best practice: Using break statement inside for loop

    Hi All,
    Using break statment inside FOR loop is a best practice or not?
    I have given some sample code:
    1. With break statement
    2. With some boolean variable that decide whether to come out of the loop or not.
    for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++){
    if(i == 5){
    break;
    boolean breakForLoop = false;
    for(int i = 0; i < 10 && !breakForLoop; i++){
    if(i == 5){
    breakForLoop = true;
    The example may be a stupid one. But i want to know which one is good?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ashok kumar B.

    Actually, it's bad practice to use break anywhere other than in conjunction with a switch statement.Presumably, if you favour:
    boolean test = true;
    while (test)
      test = foo && bar;
      if (test)
    }overfor (;;)
      if (! ( foo && bar) ) break;
    }then you also favour
    boolean test = foo && bar;
    if (test)
    }overif (foo && bar)
    }Or can you justify your statement with any example which doesn't cause more complexity, more variables in scope, and multiple assignments and tests?

  • Breaking a single query using for loop to improve performance

    Hi,
    This is a continuation of my previous post which I marked Answered and few things are were left from my side and I was advised to post a new thread...
    [Will it be a good ply|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=880922&tstart=0]
    will it be applicable to any query because I took this to simplify the thing to explain my case
    which is actually........... pull the data from some tables using joins and insert into some other tables .....
    I used few procedures for diff conditions one of them use plain' insert into select' and others use bulk collect technique.
    I followed the simple strategy (for DML ) by Tom Kytes ..and Steven Feuerstein
    Use single statement whenever it is possible..
    if not use PL/SQL with bulk collect to avoid for loop.
    Please correct me if I am wrong.

If I understand you correctly, use 2 loops. One gathers user inputs and stores them in an array/List. The second loop iterates over the array/List and does calculations.

  • Getting a for loop inside a while loop

    I've been having problems with the code below. I'm trying to get the 'while' loop to work so that the program will continue to run after a user types in a sentence. This is supposed to print out how many times a letter has been typed when a sentence has been put in, but it's not working right. It just keeps adding the first sentences numbers together even when a new sentence is typed out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with this 'while' loop.
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Count
    public static void main (String[] args)
    String phrase; // a string of characters
    int countBlank; // the number of blanks (spaces) in the phrase
    int length; // the length of the phrase
    int countA = 0; // the number of a's in the phrase
    int countT = 0; // the number of t's in the phrase
    int countE = 0;
    int countS = 0;
    char ch; // an individual character in the string
    Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
    // Print a program header
    System.out.println ();
    System.out.println ("Character Counter");
    System.out.println ();
    // Read in a string and find its length
    System.out.println ("Enter a sentence or phrase ('quit' to quit): ");
    phrase = scan.nextLine();
    length = phrase.length();
    // Initialize counts
    countBlank = 0;
    // a while loop to allow user to keep entering phrases
       while (true)
       String line=scan.nextLine();
              System.out.println("Type quit to quit or enter a new phrase.");
         if(line.equals("quit"))
    break;
    // a for loop to go through the string character by character
    // and count the blank spaces
    for(int i = 0; i < phrase.length(); i++)
    ch = phrase.charAt(i);
    switch (ch)
    case ' ': countBlank++;
    break;
    case 'a':
    case 'A': countA++;
    break;
    case 't':
    case 'T': countT++;
    break;
    case 'e':
    case 'E': countE++;
    break;
    case 's':
    case 'S': countS++;
    break;
    // Print the results
    System.out.println ();
    System.out.println ("Number of blank spaces: " + countBlank);
    System.out.println ("Number of A's: " + countA);
    System.out.println ("Number of T's: " + countT);
    System.out.println ("Number of E's: " + countE);
    System.out.println ("Number of S's: " + countS);
    System.out.println ();
    }

    Ok well I don't really understand what you're saying, but here's an improved version of my code and I can get it to work, but I don't know how to turn the "do while" loop into just a "while" loop.

  • Resetting a for loop counter and restarting the computation

    I have a while loop nested inside a for loop to do a calculation of a model.
    Lets say I am on the for loop counter 4. Suppose I wanted to keep track of the number of iterations on one the while loop, and if it exceeded a certain number say 100, exit the while loop.  I am doing this to avoid my model calculation being stuck at a spot due to optimization issues. I now want to restart the calculations of for loop counter 4.
    Is there a way to do this in labview?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Well first of all, if you are going to restart the loop with the same program inside it after it got stuck is it not just going to get stuck again creating a permanent loop in the code? Would you not just want to move on and have some sort of identifier that one of the for-loops got stuck?
    But I would recommend simply nesting your while-loop inside of another while loop, then connect the exit for the out while-loop to some variable from the inner while-loop, so if the optimization did not occur properly then it simply repeats the inner while-loop.
    Although I stick by my thoughts that you will just end up in a permanent loop if the optimization fails the first time.

  • For loop question

    Hi here is a segment of my code:
    public void vietaLoop(){
         int loopParameter;
         final int START_CONDITION=0;
         final long END_CONDITION=no_Terms;
         double initialTerm = Math.sqrt(2)/2;
         double newTerm;
         double previousTerm;
         /* calculate the next PI term */
         newTerm = Math.sqrt(2+previousTerm);
         /* assign new term to previous */
         previousTerm = newTerm;
         for (loopParameter = START_CONDITION; loopParameter < END_CONDITION;
         loopParameter++)
         /* Prints the new PI approximation */
         System.out.println(+ newTerm);
    im having loads of trouble, above is how far I have got but I'm unable to 'call' the previous calculation to be included in the next calculation to calculate the new term of PI. as a result all my output is the same..... ie = 1.645.......
    If anyone could point me in the right direct... its really getting to me. Thanks.

    Hi there,
    Is this what you want?
    import java.awt.*;
    class vietaLoop
        public static void main(String[] args)
              int loopParameter;
              int no_Terms=10;
              int START_CONDITION=0;
              int END_CONDITION=no_Terms;
              double initialTerm=Math.sqrt(2)/2;
              double newTerm;
              double previousTerm;
              previousTerm=initialTerm;
              for (loopParameter=0; loopParameter<END_CONDITION;loopParameter++)
                   newTerm = Math.sqrt(2+previousTerm);
                   previousTerm = newTerm;
                   System.out.println(newTerm);
    }If you use it as a function, set it as
    public double vietaLoop(int noTerm)
    Then you can change no of term for looping.

  • Need help with the for loop

    Hello,
    I hope someone can point me in the right direction for my next assignment. I am very new at Java programming. For my next assignment for class I will need expand my previous program which was a mortgage calculator. The first assignment we wrote a program to show the monthly payments of a $200,000 loan at 5.75% for 30 years. Now we have to output all 360 monthly payments with pauses in between so it doesnt scoll off the page. The calculation that we use is:
    month_payments = (principle * monthlyinterest) / (1-Math.pow(1 + monthlyinterest, - months));
    My question is how do I get the correct calculation outputed 360 times. I would like to use the "for loop" to do this. Also what is the correct way to do the pause command? I do not want someone to write the code, I just want some help to where I need to start off, I want to learn this on my own.
    Thanks in advance,
    DC
