Calling another method in the class from within the body of a method Im wri

Hello out there.
I have a question. I keep getting an error that reads as follows:
1 error found:
File: /Users/matthieubell/Academia/University of Waterloo/CS 125/L06/CreditCard.java [line: 80]
Error: double cannot be dereferenced
I think it is occuring because I am trying to call a method on an instance variable, which is not an object. But how do call a method I have already written, on another method I am writing in the general sense. I could make a particular object, but Im not shure that would get me the same result. I want to be able to call the method calcMinPayment on the instance variable currentBalance to wirte the method makePayment.
I have a class CreditCard
with the instance variables "private double currentBalance = 0; "
public double calcMinPayment()
// Add code here
double minimumPayment;
if (currentBalance < 50)
minimumPayment = currentBalance/10;
else
minimumPayment = 50;
return minimumPayment; // Replace this statement
* This method will decrease the current balance on the credit card if
* this payment meets or exceeds the minimum payment amount.
* pre: paymentAmt > 0
* post: The current balance should be decreased by paymentAmt if
* paymentAmt >= the minimum payment amount. Otherwise, the payment
* will not be recorded and an appropriate error message should be
* displayed.
public void makePayment(double paymentAmt)
// Add code here
double minimumPaymentAmount;
minimumPaymentAmount = currentBalance.calcMinPayment();
if (paymentAmt < minimumPaymentAmount)
System.out.println("Sorry, but your payment must exceed the minimum payment amount.");
System.out.println("This payment has not been recorded, please try again.");
else
this.currentBalance = currentBalance - paymentAmt;
thanks for youre help
-Matthieu

'calcMinPayment' takes no arguments, uses a member variable (currentBalance) to compute a local variable 'minimumPayment' which it returns, ie, sends back to the caller. So you can call 'calcMinPayment' at any time.
minimumPaymentAmount = calcMinPayment();

  • Possibility to abort the execution from within the PreUUT and MainSequence

    Hello,
    This is probably a TS newbie question that most of you can answer right away!
    I'm using the sequential model to develop my test. I cannot figure out how to do terminate the execution from within the PreUUTLoop or MainSequence callback.
    In the PreUUT you can manipulate the parameter ContinueTesting to indicate to the process model that you want to stop testing.
    For the PreUUTLoop and MainSequence callback this parameter is not available.
    I could modify the process model itself to also supply me this parameter for the PreUUTLoop and the MainSequence. (and check for it on return from these callbacks)
    But, I was wondering, is there another (maybe even better) way to do this?
    Thanks for the help!
    noxus.

    Thanks, that's what I was looking for.
    One extra question:
    - From the PreUUTLoop callback it is working fine. (immediately stops the execution)
    - From the MainSequence callback I still get the popup message "Next UUT" or "Terminate". Can I avoid this popup message and just Terminate the execution? (preferably without modifying the process model)
    or, another alternative is that I disable the "Test UUT" entry point and only allow the user to select "Single Pass". Is that possible? Is it possible to disable the "Test UUT" entry point for the sequential process model?

  • Instantiating Objects from the library from within the movie clip

    Ive been Instantiating Library object from linked external
    action script files and it works fine.
    var PPEbtn1 = new btnPPE;
    but when i try to do it from within the main swfs timeline it
    fails to work and i recieve an error if anyone could please help it

    You need to get the application domain of the external swf
    and use its getDefinition method. Cast the result to a Class and
    then you can instantiate the symbol.
    Here's some example code where "library" is an externally
    loaded swf:

  • Retrieving Jar path in the HD from within the jar?

    I have a small problem. I wrote a program which is packed in a jar file and this program is able to compile and run java files (Which I do by running javac and java processes) but the kind of files that this program compiles requires some other libraries inside the same package (In the jar file) so I am wondering how can I retrieve the jar path in the harddisk from within this jar because at the moment I ask the user where the program is and I think it is kind of ugly to ask the user where the program is from within the exact same program we are looking for.
    Hope I made myself understandable.

    Thanks for the answer. I mistakenlly ended writing a new thread (New to the forum)
    but if you would kindly look here, I have other problem now which I have been working on for a whole day.

  • How can I kill all Threads of the same class from within the run() method?

    Ok
    I have a class called Consumer that extends Thread
    I have several Consumer threans running... but, when a certain condition is true (within the run() method) in ANY of the threads, I want to kill ALL the threads of that object.
    is this possible?

    I know this is gonna be too demanding, but can someone please tell me why my Consumer's run() method never reaches the System.out.println( "ALL CONSUMING DONE") line
    Create a multi-threaded prime number calculator that is based on the producer-consumer model
    using semaphores. Your program should be able to check for prime numbers in a range specified
    by the user and with a variable number of threads. Example:
    $ java PrimeFind 3 5000 10000
    should use 1 producer and 2 consumers (3 threads in total, obviously the minimum is 2) to find all
    the prime numbers in the range [5000,10000].
    The producer should: use a buffer to store candidate numbers that have to be checked for
    primality.
    Consumers should: read from the buffer, check if a number is prime and update the status of the
    program accordingly (e.g. show the number on the screen, or save it to a file)

  • Registration from within the product doesn't work?

    Hi!
    I bought a pre-installed license of photoshop and acrobat with my computer. I registered both products to my Adobe ID when I started the programs for the first time.
    But only Photoshop 11 shows up there and now shows me a serial number of the product.
    The Acrobat program works fine and seems to be registered (at least it doesn't ask for registration anymore), but doesn't show up in my account.
    So I don't get a serial number this way. The seller (Sony Online Store) tells me that they don't hand out any serial numbers since the pre-installed programs are supposed the register automatically (as photoshop indeed did).
    I tried to get help from Adobe Support, but they just keep asking me about the serial number ... instead of telling me how to get it ... or why the registration from within the product works fine for one product but not for the other.
    So what can I do?
    Cheers,
    Martin

    You might check with the Kim Komando site about reading your SN. It is strange that Sony will not give it to you. If you ever have to reinstall it, you will need the SN. Also, I recommend you backup the installation file for these programs (you may have to download the trials) so that you have them for the future. It may be that they are on a CD or separate HD partition and that would be fine. However, it is always a good idea to have a backup of software you own for any time you need to reinstall for some reason (if you read the posts on this forum very much, you find a lot of folks reinstalling or trying to find the software they did not backup so they can reinstall on a new computer or replacement HD after a crash).

  • Calling a method of one class from another withing the same package

    hi,
    i've some problem in calling a method of one class from another class within the same package.
    for eg. if in Package mypack. i'm having 2 files, f1 and f2. i would like to call a method of f2 from f1(f1 is a servlet) . i donno exactly how to instantiate the object for f2. can anybody please help me in this regard.
    Thank u in advance.
    Regards,
    Fazli

    This is what my exact problem.
    i've created a bean (DataBean) to access the database. i'm having a servlet program (ShopBook). now to check some details over there in the database from the servlet i'm in need to use a method in the DataBean.
    both ShopBook.java and DataBean.java lies in the package shoppack.
    in ShopBook i tried to instantiate the object to DataBean as
    DataBean db = new DataBean();
    it shows the compiler error, unable to resolve symbol DataBean.
    note:
    first i compiled DataBean.java, it got compiled perfectly and the class file resides inside the shoppack.
    when i'm trying to compile the ShopBook its telling this error.
    hope i'm clear in explaining my problem. can u please help me?

  • Is it possible to call methods from another class from within an abstract c

    Is it possible to call methods from another class from within an abstract class ?

    I found an example in teh JDK 131 JFC that may help you. I t is using swing interface and JTable
    If you can not use Swing, then you may want to do digging or try out with the idea presented here in example 3
    Notice that one should refine the abstract table model and you may want to create a method for something like
    public Object getValuesAtRow(int row) { return data[row;}
    to give the desired row and leave the method for
    getValuesAt alone for getting valued of particaular row and column.
    So Once you got the seelcted row index, idxSelctd, from your table
    you can get the row or set the row in your table model
    public TableExample3() {
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Table");
    frame.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
    public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {System.exit(0);}});
    // Take the dummy data from SwingSet.

  • Referencing a method in one class from a constructor in another?

    Hi,
    I'm not sure whether this is a simple question or not, but instead of rewriting the method in another class, is there a way that I can reference that method, eg:
    public int getTitleCode() {
            return titleCode;  }within the constructor of another class. I don't want to use inheritance with this because it would change all my existing contructors.
    Any ideas how to do this, or is it just simpler to add the method to both classes?
    Many thanks!

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use a method, defined in Class A, within one of the constructors in Class B. Class B object represents a copy of the output of Class A, with the addition of a few extra methods.
    Therefore to represent the details correctly in the saved text file for class B, I need to call a method from class A to save the text file for class B correctly.
    Class B saves a file with a reference number unique to that class, plus a reference number that is also saved in the text file for class A.
    I can achieve the correct result for the above by having the same method in both classes, but I just wondered whether instead of this I could in fact call the method from class A in the constructor for class B. With the following code,
        referenceNumber = refNum;
            titleReferenceNumber = titleRefNum;
            titleRefNum = titles.getTitleCode();
        }I just get a 'nullpointerexception' when I try to run this in the main class.
    Any help or advice appreciated!

  • How to refer to enclosing instance from within the member class?

    Hi
    How to refer to the enclosing instance from within the member class?
    I have the following code :
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class MyDialog extends Dialog
         public MyDialog(Frame fr,boolean modal)
              super(fr,modal);
              addWindowListener(new MyWindowAdapter());
         public void paint(Graphics g)
              g.drawString("Modal Dialogs are sometimes needed...",10,10);
         class MyWindowAdapter extends WindowAdapter
              public void windowClosing(WindowEvent evt)
                   //MyDialog.close(); // is this right?
    In the above code, how can I call the "close()" method of the "Dialog" class (which is the enclosing class) from the inner class?
    Thanks in advance.
    Senthil.

    Hi Senthil,
    You can directly call the outer class method. Otherwise use the following way MyDialog.this.close(); (But there is no close() method in Dialog!!)
    If this is not you expected, give me more details about problem.

  • Securing a JSP call from within the OAF

    Dear All
    I am calling a custom JSP file ($OA_HTML/test.jsp) from within the controller class of an OAF page using the pageContext.setForwardURL where the JSP file is registered as an AOL function, so therefore the first parameter of the setForwardURL call is the function name.
    Now the whole reason of wrapping this JSP file around OAF, is to take advantage of OAF’s security framework and Apps Specific Functionality, so that we can perform various security checks and validation before proceeding with the call to the JSP page.
    This is working fine and we are getting the desired result, however, there is nothing stopping someone from directly typing the call to the JSP into the browser and executing the JSP and effectively bypassing the OAF page/controller, e,g:
    http://server.host.domain:port/OA_HTML/test.jsp
    Now the question is, is there any way for us to either
    ·     Prevent a direct execution of the JSP from the URL, by placing some kind of special JSP commands, which intrinsically ties the JSP with the OA controller.
    ·     Inside JSP validate and authenticate a user.
    ·     Any other methodologies that will secure the JSP file.
    Your help and Guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Patrice

    Actually there is AOL security u can use to validate whether the particular jsp is directly invoked or coming from secure session.You can use code like
    WebAppsContext webAppsContext = WebRequestUtil.validateContext(request, response);
    The validateContext method checks whether the session associated with the request and response streams is a valid one - if so it returns a properly validated context. If the session is invalid or expired, this will take care of displaying a login page to the user and the method will return null.

  • Using System.err.println() from within the classes of WAS ?

    hi,
    I am using admin.jar,a jar file which is being used by Web Application Server in my own class.
    I am referencing some of the classes from admin.jar from my class.
    I tried to print some trace statements,using System.err.println() from within the classes in admin.jar but they did not reflect in defaulttrace0.trc.
    I made these changes in the admin.jar being used by WAS.
    I restarted the server and even restarted the machine but without success.
    I want to know how to print System.out.println() statements from within the classes in admin.jar.
    Also, am i looking for these statements in the right file for eg. defaulttrace0.trc. or is it some other file that i need to look into.
    I need urgent help on this.
    Reward points assured.
    thanks a lot.

    thanks craig,
    ur answer has helped me a lot.but it didnt quite help me.
    nevertheless i am trying to set different levels of severity.
    Is there anything else that i can do.
    Also,i commented out a line of code today in one of the class DataSourceManagerImpl.java in sapj2eenginedeploy.jar
    for eg. temp.delete in it deploy method.Buth that line still executed.
    I m totally lost as to wht to do.
    I m trying to create a datasource from my application in WAS.For that i m using the WAS APIs.But its not working completely.
    I am using the above jar and its method createdatasource.
    I am callin it from my application's class.
    It creates a datasource and i can see it in JDBC Connector list in Visual Administrator.But it appears with red sign meaning its not started.When i start it from the tool then it starts.
    But in defaulttrace.trc file it shows an error "FileNotFindException". This happens,and i am very much sure, in the deploy() of DataSourceManagerImpl.java class of sapj2eenginedeploy.jar.
    i want to apply println inside this method so i may know where exactly i ma getting the error and get so more info so i may solve my problem.
    pls help me.
    its really urgent.
    thanks again

  • Making an RFC call from within the VM container

    Hi all,
    since a long time I am searching for information on how to implement an RFC call from within the VMC. The problem is that we have implemented several (p)functions in ABAP and we need to implement them in JAVA.
    Now I am searching for a way how to just call the already existing pfunctions???
    Is it possible to read CRM DB tables too?
    Thank you in advance
    Boris

    Hi Freeto,
    This may be due to the Network Failures.
    If you have triggered a job then because of the Network fluctuations the system may not respond properly and cannot execute the job.
    So, this is the cause for the failure.
    Hope you understood.

  • Calling a concurrent request from within the trigger

    Oracle apps r12.
    Calling a concurrent request from within the trigger.
    Does it requre apps initilization.
    Thanks,
    Lavan

    Hi,
    Whether apps initialization needed or not will depend on followings
    1. Trigger is written on which table seeded or custom. In case of seeded tables, there is no need for apps initialization (although oracle does not recommend writing trigger on seeded tables).
    2. Triggering Table Update/Insert/Delete event processing is done from apps front end or Backend. In case of front end apps initialization is not required.
