Calling Old Toad Multiplexer/burn problems

Old Toad (and others),
Since you. are. the. man. on this forum, I thought I'd try to get a bit of advice, if you or anyone else can help. This is my first leap into iMovie/iDVD - I've been running Macs for 15 years though. I'm shooting a Canon HDV-30, 24 fps, 1080i. I'm importing and creating an extremely simple project of my son's basketball games. There are no cuts, no monkeying around with video/sound quality: just simple fade transitions between time outs, quarters, etc. I pulled this "large" movie into iDVD - 50 minutes worth, had a single team picture as a slideshow with one mp3 song on top of the slideshow, kept the "best performance" option, and created no chapters (aside from the single one automatically created by iDVD at the start). I get through all of the burn sequence until an error message pops up, 'multiplexer error, unable to complete burn'. That may not be an exact quotation. Most of my six or seven tries the disc is left completely blank. One time, however, I got about 2:53 on the disc. This time mark did not correspond to any transition.
I've repaired my permissions. I have not reinstalled iDVD '08, however. The movie was imported to an external 400 firewire drive. This morning I did get iDVD to burn a disk image onto my desktop (startup drive) and burned that to DVD, but the result was only a series of unix video files. (I have plenty of drive space on all three drives (two internal, one external) - on the order of 80 gbs per.
As you can tell, I'm a complete novice when it comes to knowing what going on 'under the hood' or how to tackle this systematically.
Could you point me in the right direction?

You know, this really requires an extensive explanation as to why iDvd works best from the boot volume and why the pro apps don't need this since they employ one or more scratch discs. I'd offer up more details but I have a Dr. appointment in just 30 mins.
Essentially, if you plan to use 24 fps then you are shooting pro equipment and editing with apple's pro software. (mixing and matching is not good in this situation IMO).
The i-apps are intended for consumers and utilize 25 fps or 29.97.
OT often posts later in the day and sometimes at night. I'm hopeful he'll see this soon and post / add a few comments as well. Good luck on this.

  • Calling Old Toad! It's baaack!

    Hi Old Toad,
Well, I hooked up my MacBook to my TV to watch a slide show, and while the thumbnails showed, every selected picture had the grey square and exclamation mark. It had worked fine prior to hookup to TV.
    Mamma Mia.

So it plays OK on the Mac but not when you plug into the TV. You might post this question in the MacBook forum. There may be users there that are using TVs in one way or another and can help. Not having used a second monitor or TV I'm at the end of my help on this topic. Except: Know any exorcists? Good luck.

  • Another headache - "problem during multiplexing/burning - buffer underun"

    Hello,
After many iDVD issues, I finally got the burning process of my DVD project.. half way through it spit my DVD out and gave me these errors:
"Errors were found during the burning process:
The recording device reported the illegal request: Buffer underrun. (0x21, 0x02.)
There was a problem during multiplexing/burning."
What is this supposed to mean and how can I just burn my DVD?!
    Thank you
    Chris

It's been awhile since I had this error crop up, but I know 2 things that caused it for me.
    1) Bad DVD media. It happened a lot when I was using some cheap, off brand DVD-R's. More expensive Sony DVD's (white) are much better and more consistent. The time wasted with bad burns from bad DVD media is not worth the time.
    2) It could even be a problem with your DVD burner going bad, but not as likely. I did have one SuperDrive replaced because I started having problems even with good, recommended brands of DVD media. However, try getting some better media first. Don't buy a lot. Try out a small package of DVD-R's or buy a disc from a friend to try out a brand.
Another possibility: Lack of sufficient, free hard drive space. Here's what iDVD 6's help file states:
"When you burn a DVD, iDVD needs temporary space on your hard disk to store the encoded files for your project. To burn your iDVD project to a single-layer DVD disc, you should have 8-10 gigabytes (GB) of free disk space on your hard disk, depending on the size of your project. For double-layer discs, you need 15-20 GB of free disk space."
Apple's support forum describes "buffer underrun" in more detail at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25750
You might also want to defragment your hard drive (with a 3rd party utiility such as TechTool Pro) so that you don't have a fragmented hard drive when burning a project.
Speed rating of the DVD media- I've seen reports that some SuperDrives work best with media rated the same as it's maximum burn speed (e.g.- 4x, 8x, etc). I would recommend trying to find media that matches your SuperDrive burn speed, or no more than twice the burn speed.
    I hope this helps.
You didn't mention which version of iDVD you were using or which operating system. Sometimes other users have tips for you based on that info.

  • IDVD having problems "during multiplexing/burning"

    Help please:
iDVD is not burning DVDs for me.
it goes through the whole process seemingly fine, then at the end shows the error message: "problem during multiplexing/burning".
    I have a G4 emac. 800 Mhz 10.3.9
external Lacie dvd burner (that burns fine on wife's imac)
I was having this problem earlier, then erased the hard drive to start clean. Didn't seem to help.
I upgraded the Lacie driver, etc too.
    thoughts?
    R

Ah then if Toast has a connection issue and iDVD is having issues when burning, it would appear that your issue is unrelated to iDVD and instead a system or hardware problem. Unfortunately that might be too hard to diagnose here in this forum, at least not with a ton of non-iDVD related back and forth questions and answers.
Did you play the disc image on your computer to see if the titles made it into the disk image? My guess if they didn't make it onto the DVD blank, then they are not in the disk image either, although maybe they were?

  • Problem during burning multiplexing/burning error appers, please help!

I made a movie in imovie that is 1 hour long and contains still pictures and video. It also contains music all the way through it. I exported it to idvd then tried to burn it. It took almost 7 hours for it to get to the burn phase and then it pops up an error saying "problem during multiplexing/burning".
I have made movies in the past and this never has occured, and I have 30GB of HD space.
    Any thoughts??

you can use mp3 ...it will simply take longer to encode though ......
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61636
btw ... don't convert mp3 to aiff (that would be doing things backwards). For example, read these links:

    Hope this helps.

  • DVD Burn problem. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use"

    Hello everyone,
I initially had a lot of problems with PE8. However the nVidia driver update solved most of them.
Just thought it was important to report success as well as failure!
However one problem remains. I get the following error at the 96% mark while burning. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use". It is always at the 96% mark and the program is "compiling [something]" when this happens.
Having searched this site I notice that user rgferg posted a similar problem 13 days ago but was redirected to repost in a different place, but never did.
I have tried to burn a 1hr clip 4 times and every time I have selected the slower burn speed (8MB/s) as has been suggested. It seems that inferior media is a culprit, so I have bought some [quality] Verbatim DVD-R media to try in my Phillips SATA optical drive. I am sceptical this will work, but open minded nonetheless. I will give it a whirl when my computer has stopped capturing the VHS I am working on.
Each time the burn failed the disk was automatically ejected and the burn process had actually started and progressed perhaps ~40% or so.
This indicates to me that it is a drive sharing issue, rather than a media issue. Somewhere on this forum it suggests that I go through a 20+ step process and delete/disable every piece of software that can compete with Premiere among other things. IF I do this what do I burn with outside of Adobe? Do I have to get imgburn or whatever it was called? What if I like Nero? Nero 6 has worked great for me for 3 years.
So given I am willing to uninstall my old optical drive burning software, who out there can recommened commercial software that for them creates a painless Adobe burning experience with no errors or conflicts? Perhaps there is another solution that I did not see on this forum?
I am running Windows XP SP3. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my SLI GeForce 7600 GS cards. I have 3 monitors. RAID 0 SATA, 2GB RAM, Athlon X2 5400.
    Justin.

OK been working through the list of 20 things Adobe recommends to fix DVD burn error. No luck yet:
    system meets minimum requirements
Project size does not exceed disk capacity
successfully burned project to DVD folder -thus skip to step 8.
      8.   Using new blank media for burning
      9.   Try different media and DVD burners. Bought Verbatim DVD-R. Don't have another DVD burner. Adobe's supported burner list is VERY short, so of course mine is not on it.
      10.  Uninstalled Nero 6. Did NOT uninstall Acronis True Image workstation or Lightscribe. These do not access the drive unless I say so!
      11.  Have not yet disabled startup items and services. This will take a lot of work and will leave to last. Deactivated Spybot thus far.....
      12.  Disabled IMAPI CD burning COM
      13.  DMA if available already set. Haven't set this in BIOS yet. I already think it is, but will check next boot.
      14.  Updated DVD firmware
      15.  Already updated nVidia drivers
      16.  Don't have any other DVD drives to disconnect.
      17.  MPEG workaround. Will resort to if required.
      18.  Disable Autoplay? XP only has "prompt me each time to choose an action". I have set this for ALL file types.
      19.  Have NOT refreshed the DVD drivers in the registry. This step involves uninstalling PE8. Will leave this as last resort.
      20.  Visit forums to see if other have the same problem. Hi guys
So still working through some of the items above.
Can anyone direct me to advice on how to write the encoded files sent to the hard drive, or the VOB files that PE8 failed to burn to a disk? Will the former work with DVD menus?
    What a process.
    Stay tuned.
    Justin.

  • Misc questions - Old Toad - back up to dvd's and iphoto database files

    Old Toad
    Burning dvd's for back up.
I see that if I command-click Event folders the size increases down where it says information in the left bottom corner. Keep it to 4gig or less for each dvd. That works for me. When doing this does it also save any keywords etc.
I would happily go through my library this way to get a secure iphoto archive. Safest way... no?
If I did have to restore from these, what happens... is it like re-importing them, like Import to library under file menu.
(I haven't decided on an external back up HD system yet. Plus they can fail too. Right now I have 3 computers, they can talk via ethernet. One has an additional internal which i've been using to back up Mail, Ical, Address book, and other info like plist etc. Including my wife and 2 kids, I have 4 users to manage.)
Thanks for any advice you have.
ps./ I went to your site. What's up with this font - HelveticaNeue.dfont. Do I need this?
I downloaded the iphoto db back up. Will readme to figure out. (where exactly does the iphoto database file exist)
    Thanks again.
    Dave Stamm

    David:
If you use the Share->Burn menu option you will preserve the keywords, comments and titles.
Burning to DVD is a good way to archive the photos for later use in iPhoto if necessary. To get those photos back into an iPhoto library just mount the disk with iPhoto open. It will show up in the left hand pane under the Events and Photos icon. Drag the entire disk icon or drag individual albums or events (not shown in the video screenshot below) onto the Events icon like this.
However, for a way to quickly recover from a damaged library I suggest a backup copy of the library on a second hard drive. You can perform incremental backups of the library, copying only new or editied files, with a backup application like Synk. It only takes about a minute or less to perform an incremental backup. There are several other backup applications that can do incremental backups on iPhoto Library packages. Yes external HDs can fail but having both fail at the same time would be unusual unless you were to experience a power surge that would blow everything powered up. I have an external HD that I only turn on when I do a backup of specific files and folders (in addition to Time Machine), daily or every other day.
The Helvetica Neue font is what iPhoto 8 uses for Event titles, the number of photos selected and being dragged, etc. If it is missing or deactivated you wouldn't be able to change Event names or click and drag photos. If you're not having that problem there's nothing to worry about.
The database file resides inside the iPhoto Library package which is in the Pictures folder (default location).

  • Seriously feeling dumb here...burning problems!

Ah I am so thick! Okay, so I've been going through all of these past threads about people with burning problems but I feel as if I'm missing something here because nothing seems to be working out for me with iDVD.
So, I have created a movie off of iDVD that is only about 3 minutes long, with transitions and titles and so on. I have archived it. I have deleted all past movies I have archived as well as purged my computer of alot of old stuff I don't need anymore (I have a lovely old eMac...) I have bought DVD-R's, (not the +R's which I mistakenly bought before the threads told me they don't work...) and this is what happens...I will press burn. iDVD's window flashes from my movie into a window that is just a black background with the iDVD icon in the bottom center, and almost immediately flashes back to my movie with no pop-up warnings or anything. Also in the past it has said there was some kind of a multiplexer error or whatever, but that pop up has since been gone from the problem.
I would really love to transfer this short film to this DVD-R so I can view it on my lovely DVD player for all my friends.
Any pointers all you smart DVD people!??
Thanks, Kate (the dumb cinema student...oy vey.)
By the way, if it helps with anyone's answer, I have an eMac, 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4.

    Hi Kathryn
How much RAM do You have ?
How much free space on Your hard disk ?
    What version of QuickTime ?
Have You been able to burn DVDs before ?
May be You could do like this (if You have an internal DVD-burner)
    - Close iMovie
    - Locate a QT.mov that is inside Your project folder (movie project)
in the Share to iDVD folder
    - Start iDVD and drop this "project name".mov file inside the edge of
       a theme window in iDVD
    - Now try to play this - OK ?
    - Then burn a DVD disk.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Fans run full speed on stand-by and burner problem iMac 24-inch early 2009

In standby sometimes the fans are running at full speed. Also with burning some CD or DVD's the burner makes an awful grunting sound.
For a 2 year old Mac I did not expect to have these kind of problems!
Resetting the iMac does not help. Might this be a Lion problem?
Optical Drive is running at 4800rpm, normal 798rpm
Hard Drive at 5903rpm, normal 1599rpm
    CPU at 3598rpm normal, 1200rpm
The burning problem only happens sometimes, not with all.

What did you do to reset the imac? Problems like these are "sometimes" solved with an SMC reset.

  • Multiplexing/Burning Issues.

    Grrr..iLife '06, what a dissapointment! I now have 3 machines that won't write DVD's..and yes, they did before. <end of rant>
On my Powerbook 1.33 (the only machine where iDVD doesn't almost immediately crash) it will go through a LONG rendering and encoding process and somewhere along the way spit the disk out with the messages: Burning Finished Errors were found during the buring process. The twirl down arrow then says: "The recording device reported the media error: Power calibration area error. (0x73, 0x03.)"
Other times it does the same thing with the message that errors were found in the multiplexing/burning process.
The program then continues 'burning' w/out a disk, is unresponsive and in most cases has to be force quit.
    I've tried 2 different DVD's thinking I might've had a bad one.
    Ideas?
    G5 1.8, G4 PB, eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for the response. I did all that (from that post earlier today..fonts and such) and believe it or not, the problem appears to be the media. I was trying to use printable Memorex DVD's and they just won't work on this machine... When I switched over to 'regular' Imation 8x DVD-R's.. The disk wrote just fine.
Now I gotta see if I can get this working on the G5 since it seems to like the printable disks just fine.
    Weird stuff.

  • Old Toad's automator workflow to backup Library6.iPhoto database

    Dear Old Toad,
I just today downloaded your workflow to backup the iPhoto database file, and am having problems making it work.
When I run it, either from the dock or the script menu, it launches Automator but then closes without doing anything. I don't get a confirmation screen, and no copy of the database is created.
So I opened it in Automator to see if editing it would help, even though my library is already named iPhoto Library and stored in user/pictures. When I dragged it onto the Automator window, there was only 1 action (Get Specified Finder Items) instead of the 4 that show up in the ReadMe. When I dragged it onto the Automator app to open it, I got nothing.
I downloaded it via Firefox 3.0.1 and got a 1.1MB zip, and I tried downloading it twice in case it had corrupted in the download, but no change with the second try. Downloaded from here:
    http://web.mac.com/toad.hall/ToadsCellar/ToadsCellar.html
    Running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 7.1.5, on a G4.
    Something else I can try?
    Thanks,
    Daiya

Yes. Run the application like you would use the Save command in other applications, often. Running it again will overwrite the current backup copy with a new backup that will include all changes you've made to your library, new pictures, deletions, slideshows, books, etc.
I suggested keeping it in the dock so you can quickly run it after any changes you've made to the library. Being in the Dock makes it more convenient than having to go into the Application folder and launching it from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Old Toad, question about your demo website and simple-viewer.

This is for Old Toad. I checked out your demo site which is awesome. I read the tutorial,
*Examples of SimpleViewer and Flash Album Exporter Slideshows (plugins for iPhoto)*
*ADDED USING HTML SNIPPET AND IFRAME*
This was great but I am still running into a roadblock. The issue seems to be that in the URL that is given on your demo page...
    *http://web.me.com/youraccountname/slideshow folder/index.html*
....it says to enter my account name (which I did).
I am uploading the simple-viewer folder to my iDisk using the Go menu but inside of the Web/Sites folder there is no folder called Slideshow Folder. So am I right in thinking that the URL has nothing to point too because that folder isn't there? Why isn't it there? And is there anything I can do to solve this? Is there another place the simple-viewer folder should be on my idisk?
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

How did you resolve this? I am almost at breaking point trying figure it out?

  • Old Toad? -- Rebuild iPhoto Library and lose NOTHING!

    Hi,
Any help will be very much appreciated (I'm particularly hoping the old toad will be hopping over to this thread)...
I'm running iPhoto 6 and have been using iPhoto since version 3.0. I have a library of about 10,000 photos which I have meticulously organised and catalogued. I don't use albums, but eveything is organised by film rolls and every photo has keywords (names of those photographed, which I access via smart-albums), ratings, comments, and titles.
My iPhoto library, though working perfectly, is a complete mess. I can manually see dozens of duplicates (often whole folders) and it's driving me barmy...
In iTunes, I can simply copy all of my music files to a backup disc, delete all iTunes related stuff from my HD, then re-import. I lose star ratings, albums and playcounts but my careful cataloguing is preserved and I have a pristine library.
I have a feeling that old versions of iPhoto didn't allow such re-importing. How about now? Is there a way to just save the photo files, trash everything, and re-import. What would be lost? It would be a disaster of epic proportions if I lost (a) titles, (b) comments, (c) *most importantly* keywords...
I don't care about albums, and smart albums are easy to re-create. Is what I am suggesting possible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve.

    Steven:
The _2 is generated when a photo with the same name is added to a roll that already has a file by that name. If your camera has the option to turn off resetting the numbering process on each new set of photos I suggest you do so. That will avoid duplicate image file issues that can crop up when trying to export photos to a folder.
As far as the duplicates, the thumbnails don't take up much room and the modified files are only when you edit one. If you want to regain that space just do a Revert to Original and the modified file will be deleted. Many of the modified files are portrait orientated images that have been taken by a camera with the auto-rotate option. There's no way around it unless you turn off the option, upload to the desktop and then physically rotate with a 3rd party application before importing into iPhoto.
What with the low cost of external FW hard drives these days it's not expensive to have a decent sized backup drive that you can store older or not immediately needed photos in a separate library and then use iPhoto Library Manager to move between the two and copy photos between them without losing the keywords, comments, etc. Or you can use iPhoto in its alias mode with the source files on the external HD and only a very small library folder on your boot drive. I have 27,000 image files on my external HD and the library folder for it is only 1.7G. See these Tutorials for more about the alias type of library.,
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
