Camcorder Question/ Final Cut Express 2

Hello All,
I am looking to buy a new camcorder as my old one (Sony DCR-PC100e) has died on me. Am thinking of the Canon. Like the look of the XM2 but notice that on this board a lot of people talking about the HV20 and HV30.
I need mini-DV, am not bothered about HD necessarily cos I don't have an HD tv or anything else that's HD. Obviously am using a Mac, and need it to be compatible with Final Cut Express ( iahve version 2.0.3...old, I know, but suits me fine for now).
Any strong opinions on which one of these is better? XM2 or HV30.
The semi-pro version that Sony has, the DCR-VX2100-E is way too expensive....looks like the Canon XM2 is around £1500 or so?
Would appreciate any feedback, Thanks.

I have got the HV20 but cannot comment in depth on how good it is as I have only shot about 5 minutes of footage!
However, it received excellent reviews last year and is available for well under £600 new.
There are some 10 huge web pages to this review but they are worth wading through. The other reviews are shorter:-

  • Backup AVCHD Camcorder using Final Cut Express

I have previously used Final Cut Express to create a backup copy of all the video on my AVCHD Hard Drive Camcorder. However, since that time, I had to reinstall Final Cut Express. I can no longer remember or find how to do this again. Can someone please help? Did apple remove this functionality?

I just purchased FCE 4 with a new iMac but haven't used it yet. But I do know that iMovie '09 has an Archive feature that will do what you are looking for. It copies the contents of the camera in it's original Full HD format to the hard drive. I do this then import the video to iMovie using the compressed file type. With the original on the hard drive, you can always re-import to iMovie '09 (and FCE 4, I presume) if you want to use the Full HD original format at a later date.

  • Does anyone have experience with using a Canon Vixia HF M52 Camcorder with Final Cut Express?

I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder that is compatible with my Mac OS X (10.6.8) that will work well with Final Cut Express 4.0.1  I have downloaded the camcorder support info from Final Cut Express that list many capital camcorders.  I've used Sony tape based camcorders in the past.  I'm looking for High Definition.  I can stick with a tape based camcorder, but thought I would look at the Canon Vixia HF M52 as an alternative, which is listed as compatible.  I would like to download directly from the camera to FCE.  I film in the wilderness, like having an optical zoom of 20 or greater (yes, I use a small tripod). Does anyone have experience with the Canon Vixia?  And if not, but you really like another camcorder that you can recommend, what is it?

The Vixia HF M52 is an AVCHD camcorder and should work perfectly fine with Final Cut Express 4 (4.0.1).
The published "camcorder support list" has never been up to date and I would not take it to be a definitive list of compatible camcorders.
One note, however, the Vixia HF M52 supports a number of different shooting modes.  I suggest sticking with the AVCHD 1920 x 1080i / 60 fps mode for use with FCE.   FCE does not support progressive modes except in 720p25/30 (which the M52 does not seem to shoot anyway); nor does FCE support any 24 fps modes.

  • Firewire 800 problem? cant see my Panasonic camcorder on Final Cut Express

    Hi
I have a new IMAC 27 in, intel dual processor (which I love) and its running the lastest version of snow leopard. I got it for video editing (dec 09) and I'm fairly new to macs and the firewire 800.
I have a panasonic 3ccd camera nNV-GS500 and after finally figuring it out I got a new cable - a brand new firewire 800/400 cable. However nothing can be seen when I start up Final Cut pro express or imovie.
I have tried turning off mac, unplugging it, then turning on camera before turning on imac.
Looking at some of the threads it seems there are some issues for seeing camcorders with firewire 800 and that a firmware? (is this a download for hardware update) is an update is due - can anyone confirm what i should do.
    thanks in advance

Cathy, welcome to the Discussions group.
Here is the list of camcorders supported by iMovie and Final Cut Express. Your camera is not in the lists but may still work.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2948
When you are using the camera are you running it from its battery power or is it plugged into its own power source (same question would apply to your external drive which may have a problem if its not using its own power supply depending upon how much power it would draw from the computer and how much power it needs to be reliable). You should be running the camera from its own power supply.
When you are having a problem, isolate the sources of potential conflict. Make sure no other devices are plugged into the computer. That means you'll be transferring your video to your internal disk. You can always copy or move it later to an external disk if that's where you want to store it permanently.
Follow the instructions in your camera manual carefully and we hope that works. If it doesn't work, then be creative. If the manual says to start the camera first in PLAY mode, start it in RECORD mode but then switch to PLAY mode to jumpstart FCE or iMovie to recognize there's a camera installed. That hint was provided in another thread on this topic and worked for that person. You can vary starting the camera before FCE or iMovie and then try starting FCE or iMovie first followed by the camera. Just a few variations and hope again one works.
All variations fail, and the vendors web site indicates it should work, then maybe your Firewire port on the computer has a problem. Look in "About This Mac" to see the status of the Firewire service with different devices plugged in. It's not a common problem but can happen.

  • Hdd camcorder to final cut express

I have a panasonic h18 camcorder that writes to a hard disk drive in mpeg-2 format. This format cannot import directly to final cut express 3.5 (fce). How can I get my camcorder video into fce.

You have to convert it to DV format. Go to: http://www.squared5.com and download the free software. You will also need the apple codec (20 bucks) for your sound to work. Read the info about which one to get ( I forget which one it was).

  • Having issues importing from my camcorder to Final Cut Express

    Hello all -
I have a JVC GZ-MG130U HDD and was told it was compatible with Final Cut Express but when I connect it to my Mac it is as if the computer will not recognize it. I don't if I have the computer set up wrong or what.. Please help..

Quite simply your camera is not suitable for FCE or any other pro editing system.
However, you should be able to use it but it will involve buying another item to convert your files into the DV format that FCE uses.
Download MPEG Streamclip free of charge and then download the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback component from Apple for about $20.
You will find all the details on the Streamclip page :-
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Use Streamclip in the following way:-
    1. Copy the files from your camera's HD onto the desktop
    2. Drag the files into the Streamclip window.
    3. Select File>Export to QuickTime.
    4. In the window that opens change the Compression (using the drop-down menu) to "AppleDV-PAL" or "Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC".
    5. Click "Make Movie".

  • Import Video from Canon DC330 DVD Camcorder to Final Cut Express

Does anyone know how this can be done? And how to do it.
    Thanks,
    Peter

Your camcorder records to miniDVD disks. There are three possible ways to import it to FCE.
1 - if you have a Mac with a tray-loading DVD drive, you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD video to QuickTime in order to import it into FCE. The DVD disk must be finalized in your camcorder first. And you cannot put a miniDVD disk in a slot-loading drive such as on the MacBook, MacBookPro, iMac - don't try it, the disk will get irretrievably stuck in the drive.
2 - the camera has a USB port and if it's possible to connect & copy the contents of a DVD that is in the camera to your Mac's hard drive, you can also use MPEG Streamclip to convert the video for use in FCE.
MPEG Streamclip is a free utility. You will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component if you do not already have it on your Mac. You can download it from the Apple Online Store ($19.99)
3 - The only other alternative is to connect the composite video & audio outputs of your camcorder to an analog-digital converter (like the Canopus ADVC-110 ) so you can capture the video in FCE while it plays back in your camcorder. In this case you do not need MPEG Streamclip or the Quicktime MPEG2 playback component.

  • Connecting camcorder to Final cut express 2

It may seem easy to anwser but I have just upgraded to Tiger and before then could connect fine with my Sony PDX10P via Firewire. I don't know what has gone wrong as it used to work very easily. The computer doesn't recognise that my camcorder is connected.
    Thanks.

    see if this helps

  • Final Cut Express:  No audio when capturing from camcorder

When capturing video from my "Sony TRV 18" digital camcorder and a Canon ZR500 digital camcorder
into Final Cut Express 4.0.1 via fire wire to my scratch disk - a LaCie external hard drive -
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
When I move a captured clip from the browser to the viewer and time line, the video shows up, but (1) there is no accompanying audio shown in the audio time line, (2) no audio can be heard and (3) the audio meters show no action.
My Easy Setup settings for audio match my camera audio settings.
I've used different firewires between the camera and the scratch disk. Still the same.
This has been a problem for about a month. Everything worked fine before. To make project deadlines, I have worked around this anomaly by capturing clips in IMovie 4 on my older Mac laptop than transferring the media clips to my Final Cut Express scratch disk. That works, but it is time consuming and requires rendering of all the audio.
I use an IMac with OSX 10.6.5 with 266 GHz intel Core i5.
Thank you in advance for any tips that could help.

    Hi Sid
I get the video in my browser but it has no accompanying audio.
YES - This is the way FinalCut Express AND Pro works !
If You need the audio - Then You connect a small set of speakers to Your miniDV Camera
    (headphone out)
alt. if no phono-out on Camera is to connect a small TV to the Camera analog way
and here You can both see and hear during Capture
(BTW - Connecting a small TV (or if §§§§§ is no problem a reference monitor
§5-10,000 or even more) is a Very good way of keeping Quality control during
editing process. Eg Transitions, audio levels, color fidelity etc. I do and the
ref monitor are well compared to my final DVDs.)
There are NO WAY that You can monitor audio during Capture in any FinalCut versions !

  • Transferring videos into final cut express

Hello! I am new with mac, so...
In order to transfer videos from a HDD camcorder into final cut express or imovie, can I only do it through a fire wire cable? or does a simple usb do?
And, do all HDD camcorders do? I bought a Sony HDR-SR10E but I returned it because I couldn't figure out a way to import stuff....
Does anyone know a camcorder that will definitely do with FCE?
Thank you very much in advance!

As you can see from Zak's list, the only cameras apart from DV and HDV tape cameras that can be used with FCE 4 are those shooting AVCHD.
All other cameras will not work properly as you will have to convert their formats to DV using something like Streamclip.

  • Device Controls in Final Cut Express-how to disable device control??

How do I disable device control on a 3ccd panasonic mini dv camcorder using final cut express. It is very simple on final cut pro, but for some reason I cannot figure it out on final cut express. Do I need to do something with the camera itself first?

Switch to the DV Converter option?

  • Final Cut Express Version Differences with working Camcorders...

Hi everyone. I need to know if I try a camcorder on Final Cut Express 3.0(not HD), and it works...Will it work on Final Cut Express HD 3.5? In other words, will the same camcorders work for both versions? Thanks and your support is Greatly Appreciated.

As far as I know, there should be no difference. If the cam is read by one version, it should be read by the other. This has been my experience. Perhaps others have found differently

  • Sony DCR-TRV140 w/Final Cut Express 4 - Capture format question

A big thanks to the forum for patience and direction. You all have helped me get an older digital camcorder hooked up to the Mac to date.
I'm now able to capture video from the camcorder to FinalCut Express.
    So, on to today's question...
I have a Sony Digital Handycam DCR-TRV140. I know that it's NTSC (mainly because it says so right on the side of the camcorder). But I don't know what capture settings to use in Final Cut Express to get the best quality video onto the Mac, and ultimately onto DVD's or digital files I publish to my family over the net.
So when I go to the menu path Final Cut Express -> Easy Setup, I have a number of options to choose from... I (think) that I know that the best format option to choose from the dropdown is NTSC... But I don't know what to choose from the drop down list.
Here's a picture of the drop down list:

Specifications for the Sony camcorder can be found here:
    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=11027762
    or here
    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCRTRV140-Digital8-Camcorder-Streaming/dp/B0000634T4/ ref=cmcr_pr_producttop
Can you help me decide what is the best option to choose? If it depends, maybe you could explain what it depends on...?
    Many thanks!
    Tim

The differences among the Easy Setups have to do with audio sample rate, device control, and widescreen shooting.
The Anamorphic setups are for widescreen. If your camera doesn't shoot widescreen (16:9), you can ignore them.
DV media is generally recorded with audio at 48kHz or 32kHz. Choose according to the audio recorded by your camera (some offer different record options). If you capture with the wrong audio selected in your FCE Easy Seutp, you'll get a warning message at the end of the capture.
What FCE Setup are you using at present? I'm guessing it's either DV-NTSC Firewire Basic or DV-NTSC DV Converter. If that's working for you, stick with it.

  • Final Cut Express HD and Camcorder compatibility HELP Ughhhhhhhh!!!!

I just don't get it. Appple has a section that shows which camcorders are compatible with Final Cut HD Express, but there mostly old camcorders and not many HD ones at that. Then you do read some of these review sites on camcorders and they tell you they have been using Final Cut express with such and such a camcorder that is not on the APPLE list!! Whats more frustrating are these long discussions/threads/message boards on the net in terms of whats compatible and what isn't with HD express. Can we have a comprehensive list somewhere. Their's obviusly a huge problem and disconnnect here since there are literally thousands of pages and threads and messages dealing with this, and I'm adding to it. Any help will be appreciatiated. Thank you

    OIC my mistake...
You only wanted a list of the cameras YOU were interested in...
I forgot you (and HD cameras) should be the only importance to Apple.
Yeah forget about alllllllllll the other SD mini-dv cams, etc.
The reason the discussions is flooded with questions is two reasons:
1.) No one knows how to search.
2.) They know they have to ask/answer a question to take part in these discussions here....
Search or browse for existing answers before you ask a question. Someone else may have asked your question — it may save you some time.
