Camera RAW 4.0 missing features that were in Beta!

I'm confused!
I've discovered a very important setting missing from the released version of the product.
The Shadows and Highlights check boxes are missing, only Preview is available. With out Highlights, using the Recovery Slider is a guessing game.
Maybe I've just missed something, but I haven't found anyway to make them visible.
Thanks

Ricardo, I'm not certain what you are referring to. Are you asking about the Shadow and hightlight warnings? The on/off buttons for those are now in the uppper left (shadow) and right (hightlight) corners of the histogram.
If you are referring to something else please describe where those are.
Thanks!
John

  • Camera Raw 6.6 missing functions

I use PSE 10 with Camera Raw 6.6. It appears to be missing functions such as the paint brush and the ability to mask. I've tried downloading it again, but the additional functions did not reappear. Any suggestions?

Masking is only available in conjunction with sharpening under the detail tab. Hold down the alt key whist dragging the making slider to see how sharpening will be applied to edges.
There is no adjustment brush tool available in the Elements version of camera raw. It’s only available in CS6 or Lightroom.

  • How do I relocate missing songs that were originally put onto my iTunes from a CD?

Obviously I can't just navigate through my folders on my pc as the missing tracks were put into my iTunes via multiple CDs. How (without re-importing all my CD's) do I relocate all my songs/albums.
    Thanks
    Tom

It all depends on why they are lost and whether you have any form of backup or device that might hold them. It might help to identify which files are lost to iTunes which you can do with this set of playlists:
    Lost & Found playlists
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist.
Follow my instructions from the first post with a single missing file. Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. It will begin file://localhost and end with the filename. Search your entire computer for that filename. If it can be found then where it is might explain why they went missing and how they might be recovered. If it can't be found at all, you could try a few more. Failing that at least you know from the Lost playlist what CDs you need to rerip.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader DC has premium features that were not premium on my other version of Adobe Reader??

I am so angry right now because last night I had an older version of Adobe Reader that I was able to fully edit PDF's and use features such as adding a signature to my PDF. Now I've updated it when it prompted me to and now I can't add a signature unless I "upgrade". When last night I was fully able to do this on my old Adobe Reader. Can anyone help me figure out why this is? Or how I can revert back to my old version so I don't have to mess with this crappy new update. Thanks.

If indeed you have Acrobat installed ("fully edit"), then the upgrade of Reader may have changed your default file association for .pdf files from Acrobat to Reader.  Change it back and you should be fine.
If you want to revert to an earlier Reader version, uninstall DC, then download and install whatever you had before: https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

  • Camera RAW 8.3 new feature to set White and Black Sliders

How does the new feature in ACR 8.3 and Lightroom 5.3 to shift double click the White and Black sliders affect the recommended way to adjust an image?

I found this out by accident, but it is mentioned in the release notes for the PS-CC ACR 8.3 RC plug-in, not LR, but it works in both products.  The Temp and Tint also have independent auto-behavior, now, too:

  • Lightroom Advantages vs. Camera Raw

I have Photoshop CS5.1 right now.
As I understand it, the main advantage that Lightroom has versus Photoshop and Camera Raw is the workflow features that are especially optimized for handling large amounts of photographs.
Is there anything image-editing-wise that I can do in Lightroom that I can't in Camera Raw?
How essential are the workflow options?
Do you recommend I buy Lightroom? (Cost is not an issue, although I'd rather not waste 80 dollars)
    Thanks.

One other point: the practical benefits of LR (as experienced by those who find it beneficial) derive from and rely largely on, foregoing the use of strict file-based thinking, and getting instead, into picture-that-you-see based thnking.  This is disconcerting, but it's necessary to get past that panicky, missing-stairstep feeling.
LR will not truly pay off in simplicity and efficiency terms, unless used as an entire replacement for Bridge, IMO. It just risks complicating matters further, whether used as an adjunct or as a competitor Bridge.
Analogy: like adopting a healthy diet: it is not enough to start  eating all the new good stuff - you also have to stop eating the old junk stuff. If you eat both together, you are not only still unhealthy, but also feeling very full (grin) and there's no point in blaming the dietician.
BTW I am NOT saying ACR or Bridge is "junk" here - very far from it. I am just pointing out that images need to have a single point of management, not multiple ones getting in each others' way. I would recommend anyone who has decided they need to use Bridge/ACR for some significant widespread reason, to commit 100% to that (possibly with some file-centric DAM to assist) and stay clear of Lightroom - under the exact same argument.
To really see the point of LR, it is IMO necessary to at least try giving it a chance: to stop micromanaging things  with workflow folders and special file naming, stop using Save As to make different versions of your pictures, stop using Save for Web, and so on.
There's no point or profit either, in trying to force onto LR, methods and tasks it was specifically designed to let people get away from. It is not going to be well suited to those things, or even any good at them - why should it be?
There are so many laborious but (through familarity) invisible "of course you have to..." assumptions implicit or explicit in the standard approach:
one image version = one file
    order of operations is crucial
a camera Raw and a camera JPG pass though different kinds of editing
save your work or it will be lost
put lots of effort into your library folders and filenames or you will have trouble finding anything
you need to constantly monitor and ensure where everything goes
best to keep different filetypes separate
move your images through different workstage folders so you can quickly see which ones have been worked on
make a new differently named file, to explore each variation in processing
you can't do anything with a Raw file, like print, unless you first convert it to a bitmap image
you'll need to make a folder somewhere and come up with suitable filenames, for uploading to the web
save a separate copy for each printing setup, scaled to print size at the right PPI
bulk working needs some advance planning, make and test suitable Actions
at a given moment you are working on a particular set of images
    etc etc

  • Camera Raw vs. Photo Ninja

I've been hearing about a new product called Photo Ninja by the same people who make Noise Ninja, and some of the reviews by respected online personalities have actually touted it as producing superior images to Photoshop's Camera Raw.
Not being one to take others' opinions at face value without testing and looking at results with my own eyes, I requested an evaluation license to see for myself.
I'll say up front that going into the testing I figured Camera Raw would kick this contender to the curb.  It's been (and still is) my opinion that Camera Raw is the best raw converter available today bar none.
Upon first trying out the package, I immediately stumbled upon a number of usability issues that would make PhotoNinja a pain to use...  Things like unexpectedly slow control responses (I have one of the faster PC workstations available), some not quite intuitive controls, a UI that doesn't seem to conform to any known or typical computer standard (though I'll be the first to admit I have limited exposure to OSX)...  It's not surprising someone intimately familiar with Camera Raw might have some initial troubles with the UI of another package, but I stumbled through it.
Mostly I am interested in image quality.  Results - that which matters most to me.
I looked at a number of well-exposed Canon EOS-40D images I have captured, and some not so well-exposed.  I looked at images that were taken with wide angle zoom lenses and needed correction of various kinds of distortion.  In general, if I did something with either converter that made an image better, I attempted to equal or surpass the feat with the other converter.  When I couldn't get things any better I stopped and examined the results.
Before I end up writing an even bigger novel, here are my (brief) observations on image quality so far, followed by a few screen grabs showing comparisons.  Perhaps these can generate discussion...
OVERALL, Photo Ninja (PN) does a decent job - better than I expected, actually - but the devil is in the details.  Photoshop Camera Raw (ACR) just makes images that consistently look better.  I will say that I got to better looking results much more quickly with ACR, but I'm more familiar with it, so that may not be an important observation.
PN can't generate upsampled output (images with more pixels than the number of photosites in the camera), while ACR can.  That flavors the quality - in general it means that while I started out thinking PN might be making images with more detail, it turned out that the more I tweaked each converter the more detail I was ultimately able to bring out with ACR, while PN reached a limit primarily because it couldn't pack the output pixels any tighter.
ACR is generally capable of finer adjustments.  For example, PN can only rotate images in 1/2 degree increments.
Though PN does a quite decent job of de-mosaicing - visibly better than ACR's prior PV2010 process - the color and naturalness of appearance is better to my eye from Camera Raw with PV2012.  Tree branches against bright sky or white buildings just look better and more natural from Camera Raw.  That said, there were several cases where it appeared some lines were rendered more cleanly by PN (see the dark green trellis example below).
ACR's automatic chromatic aberration (CA) correction facilities seem more accurate overall, while PN left more colored fringes in most cases.  On the other hand, ACR in some cases left slightly more colored de-Bayering artifacts.
Both tools seem capable of recovering a LOT of information from nearly overexposed parts of images, though ACR gets the nod for making the transition into overexposure look more natural.
I don't know how much profiling / tweaking capability PN has, and I do know I've tweaked my ACR some, but colors just look cleaner and more healthy to me (with a few exceptions) from ACR.
Anyway, I've made the following screen grabs to illustrate some of the above, Photo Ninja conversions are on the left, Camera Raw conversions are on the right.  Note that the zoom levels are different because I opened images at upsampled resolutions in ACR (as I normally do) while PN cannot do this.
My conclusion:  Though Photo Ninja produces surprisingly good conversions, it's not really serious competition for professionals who want to get the most out of their raw image data.

    Well done, Noel !
Even though ACR won out in your tests, the makers of PN should be pleased with your report and your methodology.  Thanks for sharing.

  • Can JPG Be Opened in Camera Raw if Not Using Bridge?

I love the flexibility that Camera Raw provides even for files that were not created as NEFs and am looking for a way to open a jpg when I'm NOT using Bridge.
Can't seem to find a menu command in Photoshop and using the Finder's  "Open With" Contextual Command doesn't show Camera Raw in its menu of applications.
    Is it possible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hit the COMMAND key and the O key to open the menu that contains the choices you want.look at the bottom of the dialog box and you will see format. click on the arrows and you will see all your options ,including camera raw, which is the 5th choice.

Here is a draft of my final release notes for working with Lightroom 3 and Camera Raw 5.7:
Viewing Lightroom 3 settings in Camera Raw 5.7
Before working in conjunction with Lightroom 3 and Camera Raw please set the Camera Raw preference to: Save image settings in: Sidecar ".xmp" files.  By default Camera Raw will display the image adjustments exactly as performed in Lightroom’s develop module.  However, at this time Camera Raw 5.7 is unable to support further adjustments to the following settings or tools:
Highlight      Priority and Color Priority post-crop vignette
Enhanced      Luminance and Color Noise Reduction
    Grain effects
    Process Version
Lightroom is also dependent on a compatible version of the Camera Raw plug-in for the "Edit in Photoshop" functionality to work properly.  Camera Raw 5.7 will ensure that Lightroom 3 beta 2 will maintain that compatible functionality with Photoshop CS4.

That seems to clarify the interoperability of ACR 5.7 and LR 3.  Thank you for that, Mr. Hogarty.
Now, for the benefit of those of use who are not and/or will not be using Lightroom 3 for whatever reason, perhaps Mr. Chan or you can address the question of whether ACR 5.7 RC has a different or improved Noise Reduction functionality over that of ACR 5.6, and/or whether this will be the case for the final, GM release of ACR 5.7.  Let's leave any and all versions of LR out of the equation for a second, please.
I think I see improved Noise Reduction in ACR 5.7 RC, but I wonder if this is real or whether I've just improved my skills in handling the noise reduction sliders since earlier versions.
    Thanks.

  • Filmstrip feature in camera raw 9.0

I'm using Photoshop 6 extended in a windows 8.1 environment.  I updated to camera raw 9.0.  I'm trying to use the panorama feature and selected a number of images in bridge and opened them in camera raw.  the filmstrip feature at the left side of the camera raw screen did not open.  the selected images appeared on the left side of the camera raw screen under the heading "select all" and "synchronize".  how do I get the filmstrip feature to show?

The Filmstrip panel is showing in your screenshot.
Photoshop cs6 can use camera raw 9, but doesn't include any of the new features such as panorama or hdr that photoshop cc and photoshop cc 2014 get.
The camera raw 9 for photoshop cs6 only gets new camera support, lens profile support, and bug fixes.
