Camera Raw exposure slider jumps back

I´m desperate
The exposure slider in camera raw always jumps back or forward to the nearly next full f-stop if I choose another slider!

There has been a discussion of this in the Camera Raw forum that you might want to follow:

  • Camera Raw Policy of Writing Back into Input Files

This came up in another thread, and I think it deserves its own discussion.  I'd hope that we can influence the Camera Raw team's future direction.  I welcome your input and opinions.
Given:  Under some conditions Camera Raw writes data back into (overwrites) its input files.
Assuming you use Camera Raw to open your out-of-camera original files as many of us do, Adobe seems to be all over the road on whether to keep its hands off them or overwrite them...
Camera Raw will not touch a proprietary raw file, such as a Canon .CR2 or Nikon .NEF.  There's a whole process for remembering settings in a separate database or sidecar XMP files.  So far so good.
If you open a JPEG, TIFF, or DNG through Camera Raw, data WILL automatically be written back into it to tell another run of Camera Raw in the future what settings you used - without the software ever having warned you it will do so.
Some functions EXPLICITLY rewrite input files.  You can ask the software to write new thumbnails back into DNG files, for example.   This is fine - the user has instructed the software to overwrite the file, and the user is in charge, after all.
Overwriting/rewriting an input file without being instructed to do so is NON-INTUITIVE BEHAVIOR for an application. No one would expect an input file to be overwritten.
We do see that it causes people confusion.  I'm sure there are people right now reading this in disbelief.  I recommend you go test it for yourself (on a copy of one of your original files).
The original file being overwritten is one of the reasons why I don't configure Photoshop to open my out-of-camera JPEGs through Camera Raw.
Adobe's [mis]handling of input files on the surface seems to be derived from the history of DNG - where no camera actually writes the DNG file directly but it has been generated as an intermediate format through the DNG Converter, and as such can be handled with less "care" than an original camera file.
It seems to me that Camera Raw should NEVER write back into an INPUT file it is opening without a) letting the user know or b) being directed to do so.
    Adobe:
Please give those of us who don't want our input files overwritten an option for using the database/XMP sidecar instead in EVERY case.
    Thanks.

    It depends.
As far as I can tell:
When a JPG or TIF file is Locked,
Camera Raw > Done results in a Write Permission Error.
When a DNG file is Locked,
Camera Raw > Done - writes a separate xmp sidecar file.
The JPG / TIF handling seems to me inconsistent. With a locked file I'd prefer to have a sidecar xmp created as well. Some of my JPG / TIF files are originals for me.

  • HP TRUEVISION HD/YOUCAM WEBCAM: BLACK/DARK IMAGES. EXPOSURE SLIDE REVERTS BACK TO -9

    Hello,
    I use a HP Pavilion dv6 -  LK968EA Notebook PC with Windows 7 64-bit operating system.
The Youcam 3.5 shows a BLACK screen. It worked perfectly when I first got the laptop last year, but all of a sudden, it just got dark. It shows a very faint dark silhouette when I am in the sun, and It does NOT show any image when I am under a halogen lamp or in a room flooded with 4 double fluorescent lamps.
I have not touched the settings. But when I compared the settings with that of a friend’s, I saw that the exposure setting on his HP TrueVision HD/Youcam 3.5 was -2, while mine was -9.
I moved it to -2, and nothing changed. So I clicked “apply” and “ok” and still NOTHING CHANGED.
Someone said I should move the exposure slide to -2, tick “low light compensation” and tick “auto” next to the exposure slide, then just click only “ok”. I did ALL that and nothing happened. I repeated these steps and clicked “apply” and still NOTHING CHANGED.
I ticked “auto-lighting” and still nothing happened.
THE EXPOSURE SLIDE DOES NOT REMAIN AT -5 OR -2. IT KEEPS REVERTING BACK TO -9, EVEN THOUGH I ADJUST IT AND CLICK "APPLY" AND/OR "OK". AS SUCH THE IMAGE QUALITY IS STILL BLACK. Clicking "Auto-lighting" does NOT change anything.
    THAT IS THE PROBLEM.
KINDLY PROVIDE ASSISTANCE ALONG THAT LINE.

Exactly the same issue. The exposure setting won't change. It's not even that it doesn't save, as you look at the preview screen, all of the video proc amp setting change live, but when you get onto exposure, it does nothing. And then it doesn't save.
So this issue has been floating around for about 3 years and nothing has come to light to fix it.

  • CR2 Files Won't Open In Photoshop CS5 - Camera RAW Updates Won't Install...

I've had to take some photo editing work home from the office and I need to open some CR2 (RAW) files on Photoshop CS5. When I drag the files into the program I get a notice that my Camera RAW does not support the files.
I've tried downloading updates for Camera RAW, all the way back to 6.3 (I'm currently using 6.0), but when I go to install I keep getting the message "Some Updates Failed to Install" "Update is Not Applicapable".
The photos were shot on a Canon 5D Mark II, not that it should make much of a difference. I'm wondering what's going wrong? I'm running OS 10.5.8 at home and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

If you have CS2 the latest version should be ACR 3.7.
ACR 4.x is only for CS3. If you download the 3.7 ACR and install it correctly ( be sure to follow the instructions precisely!) you should be OK.

  • Camera Raw plug-in.  How can I download and Install?

For some reason, I don't have the Camera Raw plug-in installed with my Photoshop Elements 11.0 software on my PC.  How can I go about downloading and installing the Camera Raw plug-in?

    Barbara,
Thanks for replying to my question.  First of all, yes I'm sure I don't have
it, or if I do, I'm unable to access it.  When I go to File>Open As and
click on the down arrow where you go to make your selection for Camera Raw,
it does not appear as one of my options.  All the other options are there,
but not Camera Raw.  I went back into Elements 8, 9 and 10, which I also
still have installed, and it does show up there, but not in 11.  I did go
into Help>Updates a couple of weeks ago and it said all my updates were
current, so that didn't help.  In fact, since then I've installed the trial
version of PSE 12.0 and it shows up there with no problem.  My camera is a
Panasonic Linux and every version of PSE, with the exception of 11.0, has no
problem handling my RAW photos, so that is not the answer.  After I got your
e-mail today I went back into Help>Updates again for my PSE 11.0
installation and lo and behold it came up with an option to install Camera
Raw version 8.2, which I did, thinking that might just solve my problem.
The installation seemed to download without a hitch, so I think it's lurking
in my system somewhere.  The problem I'm having now is figuring out how to
get it into my 11.0 version so that it shows up as an option that I can
click on when I do the Open As command, since it's still not showing up
there.  Any additional help you can provide me with would be greatly
appreciated.  The reason I so desperately need it in my 11.0 version is
because I'm teaching a SeniorNet PSE 11.0 class and without Camera Raw
installed on my home computer, I'm kinda lost.  I've been using 12.0 for the
time being, but my trial period for that is due to run out soon and I hadn't
really planned on buying the 12.0 version this time around. Thanks again for
    your help.

  • Restoring Camera Raw Settings?

    Hi guys
Is there any way I can regain the settings i chose when I opened up a picture in camera raw?
I need to apply the same colour settings to other photos but once youve opened an image after editing it on camera raw, theres no turning back.
Is there any way around this?
    Thanks
    Kay

Your original raw file is absolutely preserved intact.  When you open it, Photoshop brings the image into RAM and when you save it, it saves a copy of what's in RAM to whatever format you designate.
All of this without touching the original raw, and ACR saves your settings in metadata.
Just go back and open the original raw file once agaim, and you'll see everithing is still there.
Raw files are always treated as read only.

  • In-camera settings to camera raw

Is it possible to export the in-camera settings to camera raw in CC?
Back when i have CS3 camera raw did read my camera settings and started with showing them as standard when i opened my raw files.....

Adobe reads the camera setting of white-balance which is specified in an industry-standard way, but mostly camera settings are only appropriate for the camera manufacturer’s raw converter in camera or in their software.
Adobe has their own raw converter which has its own settings.
What you may be referring to is the Profile in the Camera Calibration tab that defaults to Adobe Standard but for some models of cameras you can change to Camera Standard, Camera Neutral, Camera Portrait, Camera Landscape, etc, depending on whether Adobe has developed these simulated camera mode profiles or not for the model of camera the raws are from.
Is this what you’re talking about?   You can set ACR to have a different default profile than Adobe Standard, but you cannot have ACR read the camera settings for a profile and select the simulated profile automatically.

  • Lightroom 5 Camera Raw 8.1?

I cant install the Camera Raw 8.1 Update in my Lightroom 5 Version. The Path "Help-Updates" say "No newest Update available" (all in German on Mac OSX, LR5 (Upgraded from LR4)).
    I need the Update!

On Windows 7 64-bit, comparing LR 5.2 and ACR 8.2/DNG Converter 8.2 lens profiles from their following respective folders:
    LR 5.2:  C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.2\Resources\LensProfiles\1.0
    DNGC 8.2:  C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0
848 lens profiles are identical between the two sets of subfolders, while the ACR 8.2/DNG Converter 8.2 has four extra profiles:
                    .\sigma\olympus\olympus imaging corp. (sigma30mm1.4 ) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\olympus\olympus imaging corp. (sigma70-200mm2.8 ) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\pentax\pentax (sigma_18-200mm_f3.5-6.3_dc_os_hsm) - raw.lcp
                    .\sigma\pentax\pentax (sigma_200-500mm_f2.8_apo_ex_dg ) - raw.lcp
These four extra profiles in the camera-raw subfolders are from back in March 2010 and appear to be duplicates of profiles already in the Sigma folder, so may be obsolete, copies.

  • How to best open a 35 mm slide RAW scan with 4000 dpi in Camera RAW CS5?

I have, at present, set Camera Raw to open files as ProPhoto RGB and as 360 dpi. I want to keep all options open for later use of the files (for albums or enlargements). How do I get the best results so that I do not diminish the quality obtained in the scanning process (where I try to use only ICE and to leave all other editing to PS later - I know that the changes made by ICE are permanent so that I already here do not have a real RAW - but it is my impression that the choice of RAW over TIFF in the scanning is still worth it).
I have also some older scans but these are TIFF's, also 4000 dpi but only 8 bit. I want to get the best result from both types of files.
I plan to perform all edits before I finally save files in various print sizes. I am still quite scared as to make mistakes when resizing so that I get an inferior quality in the new size.  I, of course, keep a copy of the original scans safe and unedited.
I am also in doubt as to wether I should go directly into PS or via Camera Raw with the scans.
Excuse these foolish questions from a grandmother who is a complete newbie as to film scanning and still quite "green" as to PS.

Thank you. So far I have not scanned as RAW files but felt persuaded that I should choose that format. Especially after having read the arguments in Sascha Steihoffs "Scanning Negatives and slides".
I went back and found a new edition of the book where it has been added that in PS (the book is from 2009 and refers to CS3) ACR cannot open the scanned nef's, only nef files from a camera. It seems that you have to use Nikons own editing software for opening these files. I tried to ask Nikon if the scanned nef's could be opened in the latest editions of PS but got the answer that they "did not know".
So I have probably to stick to the tif's. Pity! Unless CS5 or 6 can open them of course. I wish I could get an answer from Adobe concerning that. They should be interested in encouraging people to use their software instead of Nikon software.
I probably should still give it try but that would probably mean that I should do it without the ICE in the hardware to get a real nef RAW (or maybe it still is not a real RAW).

  • Why can't I see the recovery slider in camera raw of elements?

I have the most recent version of elements, version 11. The camera raw plug-in is up to date, some 7.4 something. On the online help list and tutorials I have seen, there is a recovery slider. Yet, when I tried to practice with raw files in camera raw, the recovery slider was not there. I tried looking around the window, clicking menus, but can't find it. So where is it?

PSE 11 has a new 2012 raw engine but you can switch between the old and the new. In the camera raw dialog click on the camera icon. Then change Process to 2010. Then go back to the basic tab.

  • Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments

    Nobody else resent this "improvement"?
Now the only way to have the image properly scaled (while not affecting everyting else by the automatic guesswork) is to have the settings in custom non-automatic default and then one has to use the Exposure slider manually with the aid of the Highlights Clipping Warning, for each and every image.
Compared to the 3.6 where this is fully automatic and works very very well.

sorry for the confusion, it is indeed shift double click and double click to change from auto to standard.
If you use your own created standard setting both automatic and standard on top of the sliders are blue colored and visible. Using auto does gray out the auto setting and using standard does gray out this option which is logical because you have to click on the highlighted option to change.
So this is the way to see in what mode you are.
underneath a copy from the original post that came with the release,
    regards

    Camera Raw 3.7 Now Available
    Tom Hogarty - 09:36pm Feb 18, 2007 Pacific
The Photoshop Camera Raw 3.7 plug-in is now available on adobe.com.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
Important Notes Regarding Camera Raw 3.7
There are several significant changes to Camera Raw 3.7 in how it handles auto and default settings:
Applying auto settings by default is no longer controlled on a model by model basis, but instead there is a single global preference checkbox Apply auto tone adjustments that controls this adjustment for all camera models at once.
Camera Raw 3.7 no longer supports per slider auto adjustments. One Auto control at the top of the panel now sets the Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast sliders to their auto values. The Default control at the top of the panel sets these same four sliders to their default values. The keyboard shortcut for the Auto control is CMD/CTRL-U.
The keyboard shortcut for the Default control is CMD/CTRL-R.
Double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its default value.
Shift double clicking on a slider to set that single slider to its auto value.
Previously, default image settings could only be applied per camera model. Camera Raw 3.7 can now:
-Apply default image settings specific to a camera serial number
-Apply default image settings specific to a camera ISO setting
The additional criteria are located in the Camera Raw preferences.
The default settings (including the global auto preference) are now shared with the DNG Converter.
The DNG Converter requires OS X 10.3.9 as a minimum operating system.

  • Problem with exposure adjustment in Camera Raw

I'm a long time Photoshop user, currently on CS6. Recently I've been having problems with adjusting exposure in Camera Raw. For some reason, it now only works in full stops. Nothing in between works. Same problem with the adjustment brush.
I updated today to the latest version but the problem remains. All other adjustments are working as they should.
Can anyone explain what happened and how I can get back full funcionality?

I have found an acceptable solution to the issue (already posted in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5920583#5920583 ) after invaluable tips from forum members.
The problems are indeed caused by the Nik plug-ins, and specifically by the Selective Tool plug-in. But you don't need to uninstall anything.
Solution: In your applications folder, choose Photoshop/Plug-ins/Google and you will find the various Nik plug-in folders. Add a tilde sign to the Selective Tool folder (like this: ~Selective Tool). Close Photoshop and open it again. Camera Raw should now be working without issues. The Nik plug-ins will lose some funcionality, but nothing really serious. You will have to manually duplicate a layer before using a Nik filter and the filters won't work with multi-layers. If you desperately need full funcionality, close PS, remove the tilde sign and open PS again.
