  • How do I change the transparency grid to gray in Camera Raw 8.7.1?

I am using Scott Kelby's  The Adobe Photoshop CS6 Book for Digital Photographers. He has a tutorial on Lens Correction in Camera Raw where he uses vertical tilt to correct perspective on an image taken with a 10 mm lens (Chapter 3, page 69 if that matters to anyone). The correction is extreme and after correcting, the areas where the transparency grid would show are gray in his image. On my copy of Camera Raw 8.7.1, I get the familiar checkered transparency grid (I am using the same image supplied from the books web site.  He continues on with a Free Transform and Content-Aware correction to eliminate the "gray" area without explaining how the transparency section in his image got to be gray. Doing a selection on the transparency to complete the Content-Aware is not possible as described in his book. Is something I am missing with PS CC 2014? I have asked four other photographers using CS6 and CC. Two report they have the checkered grid and one has a gray area and yet another has a white area.   How can I get the gray area as described in the book?

In case you are accessing this discussion by email, please be aware that I edited my last post:
In have sent a query to the Kelby web site asking for an explanation.
Great, I was going to suggest that right off the bat in my first post, but refrained from that so as not to be accused of being condescending.
I always get a gray grid for transparency in ACR, no matter what, never a solid-color gray or solid any-other color.
To be honest, I can't fathom why you would care that you get the same result.
Totally off topic:  I can't stand Kelby.  :-/

  • Understanding Camera RAW with JPEGs

I usually work on the design end, hence I rarely work (professionally) with files straight-from-camera. I get the stuff after the photographers are done with it.
However, that is slightly changing and so I have a question about the Camera Raw plugin in Photoshop. In particular, processing JPEG images with it.
If I understand correctly, it does not actually modify the JPEG image itself, but merely saves the correction information as metadata in the JPEG file, which is then re-constructed when the JPEG is re-opened.
This would (assuming I understand it properly) make it a "safe" way of tweaking JPEGs as unlike most JPEG operations, no resave/quality-loss is occurring. Only the metadata is changing.
Am I correct or have I horribly misunderstood this process?

I can appreciate that - my own plug-ins all do their work in linear space as well for the advantages thereof.  However, it's not as if one can't get good results with the normal Photoshop tools, which for some reason seem to be out of favor...  One can convert to a linear profile to work on it in Photoshop proper, for example (though one has to craft or find a linear profile to use for that, as none is provided by Adobe).  I do my astroimage processing that way.
I might change my workflow to involve Camera Raw where JPEGs are concerned IF Camera Raw could be set to write its metadata back to a sidecar file or the central database instead of rewriting the JPEG file.  I understand that it is not rewriting the actual image data, but I just don't want it writing back to my JPEGs at all.

  • Need help installing Camera Raw Presets from DVD

I got the NAPP Goodies DVD and I am attempting to install the Camera Raw Presets.  It says to put them into Library-Application Support-Adobe-CameraRaw-Settings...  When I get to CameraRaw the ONLY folder in there is CameraProfiles.  I have searched everywhere looking for a CameraRaw-Settings folder and cannot find one.  I updated CameraRaw and still no settings folder.  I even attempted to find it by looking in camera raw where it has saved the custom settings I made as presets and it shows that they are saved but will not show me where.  I am using CS3 specifically Photoshop and Bridge. I do not have Lightroom.
Do I need to reinstall Camera Raw and how do you do that? Will I then lose my presets that I made in CameraRaw?
    Thanks for your help

The correct location (on Mac–since you don't bother to spec your OS) is:
    User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings
All user level stuff will always be in the User folder. Root level stuff goes in the root level/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw folder.

Here is a note from the ACR 7.1 beta release.  http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw7-1/?tabID=details
    Perhaps this answers question.
    Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it no longer required to place the plug-in file in the specified directory on my hard drive?
The Camera Raw update process has grown to include lens profile and camera profile files which are easiest to install via a single installer process instead of updating several different directories manually.

  • When is a tiff not a tiff in Camera RAW?

I have a big scanning job in b&w and have been going along well. I save to tiff, it opens in Camea raw where I have some global settings. After taking a break, I go back and now the new scans don't open in Camera raw. Only in PS. I go back and check. Yep, the earlier ones still open, even after PS corrections.
    This is CS3 on XP.
So I move to CS3 on Win 7. Now, none will open in RAW. I check and recheck everything and nothing has changed. Go back to XP and same behavior.
So when and how is a tiff not a tiff?
Cavalier behavior is barely tolerable in humans, but computers?

I've run both CS4 and 3 Jeff. I don't see any difference from the pov of simplicity.
Pray, explain how simply taking a walk then continuing my work would qualify as an operator issue? Unless there is a subterranean view of RAW not apparent and that in coming back to work or setting up CS3 in Win7  I have transgressed certain conditions, I am at a loss to explain.
I also have a problem with Bridge suddenly losing file associations, so I immediately thought to re-install CS3. The Bridge problem showed up when I uninstalled CS4. However, I have CS3 installed on a fresh install of Win7, which shows no ability to open any of the same files in ACR. I very carefully went over every detail in Bridge and PS prefs. They are identical to XP.
So, somehow, these tiff files, derived from a scanner, seem not to open in ACR completely in Win7 and partially in XP.
If my expectations are correct, by re-installing CS3 doing a clean script first will result in none of the scanned  files opening in ACR, matching what is happening in Win7. If in fact, this is falsified, ie open in XP but not in Win7, "Houston, we have a problem"!
If you have some procedural methodology to go beyond the basic setup, I would like to hear about it.

  • Why are colours very different between PSE 11 Org & Camera Raw 7.4?

Looking at some new images in the Organizer the color is very cool compared to when I open it in the Editor & it goes to Camera Raw where it is very warm.  Same monitor, same color settings in both Org & Editor.  I can edit in Camera Raw & Editor, but why are my colors not true in Org?  Any suggestions?
I'm running a Mac with Mavericks.

Yes, I understand that.  If I adjust the color in only C Raw, or also go into the Editor, the changes are saved in the Org.  What surprises me is the vast difference in color temp.  I'm estimating about 500 K diff--enough that I may not have edited the color I see in C Raw--but definitely wanted to do so from what I viewed in the Org.  I don't recall this much of a difference--and the Org seems to be the one not accurately reflecting the image.

  • CS 5.5 production premium and Camera RAW

hello i just bought adobe creative suite 5.5 production premium when i opened the box i saw 3 stickers of Serial numbers , one for Color Finesse , PPro/AE CS4 32bit and Production Premium
I put Production Premium SN when the installer lunched and i think Color Finesse for After Effect  .... my Q? is shall i need to input the SN for PPro.... or its okay to leave it ?
and my 2nd Q? about the Camera RAW , where can i find it ???
    thanks a lot

No need to input the extra AE/ PPro serials, if you haven't been installing CS4. Likewise, the ColorFinesse serial is only necessary for the version that came with CS4. Camera RAW can be found in Photoshop, Bridge and After Effects via the respective import/ file open options.

  • Camera Raw wants me to use process 2010 instead of 2012

I edited my raw in lightroom 4, process 2012, when I place the picture in my photoshop document from bridge, camera raw shows a ! telling me "Update to current process (2010)", but 2010 is not the current process, 2012 is. What should I do to correct this ?
Maybe deleting camera raw file (where is it ?) and reinstall camera raw (where do I get it) ?
    Thanks for your help
ps: I'm on Mac. CS 5.5 production premium.

As long as CS5.5 is updated to ACR 6.7 and you don't need to change any of the slider values, then you can ignore that.  ACR 6.7 doesn't have sliders for PV2012, though, as it's an older version.
If you need to adjust the sliders in the ACR dialog for your smart object, you'll either need to use the older PV2010, or update to CS6.

  • Camera Raw, What Is It? Where Is It? Demystify Please

I'm told by Lightroom that I have an older version of Camera Raw but it no longer gives me that message on startup because I probably checked the box that said don't remind me again.
In the interest of learning more about Camera Raw I need to know:
Is it an application? - I don't see it in the applications folder (Mac)
Is it a plug-in module? - I don't see it in the Photoshop plug-ins folder.
Where does it reside? - I did a Spotlight search of my entire system and the only things that came up for Camera Raw are some folders in Library>Application support and a bunch of pdf files.
I need to tell which version I have but can't do that until I find it - whatever it is.
My next question has to do with lightroom: Does Lightroom use Camera Raw (I'm gathering it does if it recognizes I have an older version). Is Camera Raw the machine that operates behind the curtain of 'Develop?'
If I knew the answer to just these few basic things, I think I could understand a lot more about how Lightroom operates in Develop mode.
    TIA,
    Ken

    Thanks for the info ssprengel,
So, it it is a plug-in that Photoshop uses; (I have CS3 with Photoshop Extended) why is it not in the plug-ins folder for Photoshop?
Why does it not update automatically like every other Adobe product I have does on a regular basis? My CS3 Photoshop has updated but why would the Camera Raw plug-in be ignored?
Also, If Lightroom uses the Camera Raw engine, doesn't that mean that it should not be concerned with what plug-in I have for Photoshop? That part just does not make sense to me.
"You should keep ACR up-to-date with LR to avoid making adjustments in LR that ACR cannot perform." --- Aha!, so that means that there are TWO Camera Raw engines working, one built into Lightroom and one floating around in the system somewhere? (I have not located yet.) And these TWO Camera Raw (one internal to Lightroom and one a plug-in for Photoshop?) need to be kept in sync with same version number?
I'm going to now go into Photoshop and see if I can update the Camera Raw plug-in from there as you recommend.
    Thanks,
    Ken
Okay, I am back from running update, all of my software is up to date. The problem is that I have CS3 and the newer versions of Camera Raw beyond 4.x are only compatible with CS4. Because of the ailing economy right now I will have to be lop-sided on Camera Raw it looks like.
Will I be okay if I just do not use Photoshop Camera Raw and only use Lightroom 2.4? or should I de-grade back to an older version of Lightroom? (I don't like that idea.)

  • My auto updates are not working. I cannot find where to download Camera Raw 8.1 for Photoshop CS6.

My auto updates are not working! I cannot find where to download Camera Raw 8.1 for Photoshop CS6 (Windows 8 64 bit). My Camera Raw is now at 7.1. I had the online Adobe folks tell me to just download all updates manually. That's great, yet I cannot find camera raw 8.1 to download...
    Please help.

Where can I find the plugin to open camera raw files for Nikon D810 for Photoshop CS5.1? I've looked around the site but cannot get this to work.. Thank you.

See for yourself which version of ACR is needed for that camera’s RAW files
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
then check your version (Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw).
Your version of Photoshop does not support that version of ACR.
You could use the free DNG Converter.

  • How / where can I donwload latest version of Camera Raw in order to open my D4s raw pictures ? I actually have Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS 10.9

Hello, it's all in the title :
How / where can I donwload the latest version of Camera Raw in order to open my D4s raw pictures ? I actually have Photoshop CS5 on Mac OS 10.9
What is the process too ?
    Thank you.

Raw support is version specific. There is no way to simply force install a new version of ACR into an older Photoshop. You need to consider upgrading or use the DNG converter.

  • Where do I find the white or shadow sliders in Adobe Camera Raw 8.71

Where do I find the white or shadow sliders in Adobe Camera Raw 8.71  I just downloaded Photoshop from Creative Cloud as an update to my CS 5, yet these sliders are not there. Thanks!

In CR the dialog has changed to new setting. Old images have to be updated to the new process. Now all sliders to the left bring a darker result, to the right a brighter result.
New process is much finer than the old, you have to work it for a while but you will like it, when you are used to the new behavior.
