Camera recommendations for classroom use

I teach a beginning video class using intel imacs . Currently running imovie 6 HD (cuz we don't like the new 08) BUT.. if I could find an hard disk camera that would hook up and work with FCE (new) and imovie 08, I'd switch I just tried the canon hg 10 and the JVC Everio without any success. Read all the forums , tried the sequences mentioed and file fixes (did not find the Pervian file to delete) and neither will load to drive status or detected by software so.... what are others who want to edit with Mac software doing for cameras?. Need new ones as the newer canon mini dv's just die much too quickly -and my students have been gentle with them this year.

Canon makes excellent equipment and their technical support people always seem Macintosh savvy (They were very familiar with iMovie 06).
I use my Canon with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. (and occasionally with iMovie 08)

There is no bookmarks tab, expect you are referring to the bookmarks menu on the menu bar ("File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help") on your XP system.
Once your restore your menus on you Window 7 system, you can get rid of the bookmarks button. After going through the 10 steps below your toolbars on your Windows 7 system will be more usable again and like your XP system, none of which has anything to do with Sync.

  • Looking for recommendations for SSO using Identity Management Suite

Apparently there is more than one way to perform the single sign on functionality and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations. We want to use the user's CAC to authenticate and we are using both a thick and a thin client with business intelligence software (not Oracle) for reporting and the thick app needs to login, transfer data to and pull data from the database. We don't want the user to have to enter their information for login regardless of which piece of the application they are accessing. I was considering Enterprise Users, but not sure this is the best solution.
We plan on using OID to store the user's data and using the identity management with access manager suite. We need to use label security and row level security combined with roles in the database. We plan on using Oracle's Advanced security option for encryption and we are using 11g database

Great questions - swifer was made by me for me to use with arch.  But its dependencies are light and very common (you almost certainly have them already), so it should run on other distros well.  It does use something comparable to profiles for secure networks but much simpler - they are just wpa_supplicant.conf segments, but swifer writes them itself for simple cases (and most cases are simple cases; wep is a current exception) so generally you would have to pay no attention to them.
As for permissions on the files, I've been meaning to get around to that - they've been 0644, but I just changed it to 0600 in the last revision which is now on github.
EDIT: also keep in mind this is a development version.  I use it myself as my only networking tool on a netbook that I bring everywhere - and I have no issues.  But I also know how to connect manually in a bind: and I advocate for every user knowing the manual steps (ip, iwlist (if needed), iw / wpa_supplicant, dhcpcd/dhclient).

  • Paid app onto other devices for classroom use

How can I download a paid app to other devices to use in classroom? I do not want to have to pay for it several times

Legally you must purchase one copy for each device you want the app on. Per the terms of sale (emphasis mine):
(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download and sync an App Store Product for use by either (a) a single individual on one or more iOS Devices used by that individual that you own or control or (b) multiple individuals, on a single shared iOS Device you own or control. For example, a single employee may use an App Store Product on both the employee's iPhone and iPad, or multiple students may serially use an App Store Product on a single iPad located at a resource center or library. For the sake of clarity, each iOS Device used serially by multiple users requires a separate license.
The volume purchase plan, if available in your country, is often the most practical option:

  • Is it possible for a academic department to create a digital library of movies purchased on iTunes for classroom use?

All faculty will have a iPad in hand by June 20.  I was approached by a teacher asking if there is a way to create a digital movie collection for a department.  For example, if a teacher purchases Hamlet to show his classes, can another teacher use that same account to show Hamlet to her classes?  The movie would be viewed in the "physical" classroom.

Your assumption that instructions will work every time without facing errors is excessive in my opinion. I never observed a daqmx task simply stopping responding to commands: every time it happened, an error condition was raised explaining the misbehaviour.
I would add some error checking where you are manipulating the daq board and look into the informations the error message gives you.

  • Recommendations for Semi-Pro or Pro HD Video camera to use with fcp and Mac

Recommendations for Semi-Pro or Pro HD Video camera to use with fcpX and Mac with auto settings and ability to override, need to add external mic or 2.  Am one person crew so needs to be easy to use.

And check out the Panasonic AG-AC90.  Very good specs for a prosumer unit. Everything in the semi-pro area will involve trade offs for sure. Key thing is to study up enough to know what your needs are vs what trade off are involved in the various models. The ag-ac90 trade off (one of them) is diffraction limited sharpness.

  • Which is the best low-cost camera for my use?

Hi everyone. Been busy and off the forums for a while, but need your expertise once again.
I just found out that the Panasonic HVX-200p that's been on loan to me for 2 years has to be returned. Since I run a non-profit, I am thinking about asking my major donors to buy one for us. So, the question becomes which one? I own the CS4 MC, and you can see my other info in my profile.
I only do educational-type videos in an interview format against a green screen so far. I've been capturing direct to OnLocation via 1394 FireWire at 720p/60fps and editing in an HDV 720p/30 sequence. I sometimes do "man on the street" segments (capturing to OnLocation on laptop). I integrate numerous PSD graphics as educational slides, a lot of AE projects I get from videohive and customize, render, & import into PP, and motion backgrounds like Pond5's weekly free stock footage (much of this stuff gets resized, of course). I do some scoring and some SFX and export the audio to SB for touchup. I use a bunch of Lowes/Home Depot worklamps with fluorescent bulbs for lighting the subject and background. I key my backgrounds using PP/AE Dynamic Link. Oh, and I'll need a lapel mic and a tripod, too. I would prefer not to rule out shooting at 1080i/p at some point.
I export H.264 highlight clips which get uploaded to Vimeo and embedded in our website using prettyPhoto features. Ultimately, the finished PP project is exported as MPEG2-DVD, finished in Encore, burned via ImgBurn. If you want to see a good example, watch this http://vimeo.com/23346431. Caution: this is religious material. Be sure to repent before watching
So, there's not really much heavy lifting here. But when it comes to what is the minimum I need with the options of capture formats, etc., I'm clueless. I've read about problems with AVCHD, and although low-cost, is it really a problem for what I do? I trust this forum more than online reviews, and I'd appreciate recommendations of specific models and where to buy, if possible. Also, what about used cameras? Please remember, the budget is tight.
All suggestions and questions are welcome and very much appreciated.
    Paul

Actually, two things surprise me in your statement and one is simply incorrect:
As for Broadcast quality..... a little station called CNN - you might have heard about them bought 250 of them from Panasonic about a year ago.
First, that CNN would buy JVC cameras not from JVC, but from Panasonic.
Second, there are no JVC cameras on the BBC approved list at all, see http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/site/BBC_Approved_HD_Cameras.pdf and the only affordable ones on the list in the handheld category are the Canon XF300/305. Maybe that is the reason the BBC bought 350 of these. Even the Sony XDCAM EX is only accepted in combination with a 50 Mb disk drive, not in the native 35 Mb format.
The BBC approved list is a list that most broadcasters adhere to, including CNN, Discovery, ARD and NGC.
The JVC GY-HD100U is definitely not acceptable for HD, and in no way HD broadcast ready. But that CNN bought that number of these cameras is probably caused by the fact that they think these deliver better quality than regular phones. And it does not use XDCAM, but a very simple HDV codec, limited to 1280 x 720 resolution. See http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/specs.jsp?model_id=MDL101539&feature_id=03
This simply means that the Canon codec is very acceptable to the BBC for HD programs. The XF100 uses the same codec, but is only a single sensor camera and for that reason alone not approved by the BBC.
Paul, if you can live with the limitations of a single sensor camera - and given your intended purposes, I think you can - the JVC does not even come close and the XF100 material will be hardly worse than the XF300/305. To the untrained eye the results are almost the same.

  • Hardware recommendation for a real-time camera

    Hi All,
We are interested in using some cameras with LabVIEW real-time for some data acquisition. We are monitoring quite a large array of points for on/off signals (so a camera is easier to implement than an array of photodiodes). Our initial spec is a CCD, 640x480 chip and about 15fps. I'm guessing firewire or Gig-E as the interface as I've heard USB is not compatible with real-time.
Our plan is to develop the application to run under LabVIEW real-time on a PXI platform. We also hope to eventually deploy the system so we'd prefer not to use NI Vision (I'm not sure if this is possible or not). Similarly due to cost we'd prefer not to use the Embedded/Compact Vision Systems if we can avoid it.
Can anyone recommend a camera which they have used with LabVIEW real-time? I have no real experience with RT as yet so any advise at all would be a great help.
We are also hoping to deploy the system using a cRIO as the main hardware platform. I've seen real-time cRIOs  (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/208042) have Gig-E built in. Has anyone used a Gig-E camera directly with one of these controllers?
    Thanks for your help,
    Dave

Can I suggest that you contact the UK branch by calling 01635 523545 and request that you speak to you local Inside Sales Representative. They will be able to speak to you further regarding your full systems specifications and suggest which NI products will be best for you.

  • Recommendations for HD camera?

I want to import high definition video into my computer from a camcorder, but I want to do it 'live' without first recording to tape or hard drive. Do all HD camcorders allow this? Does it matter if they have only USB and not firewire, or does either work just as well? I plan to import video using BTVPro, since it allows time-lapse recording. Does anyone know another program for mac that does time-lapse (since BTV has not been updated in years).
I'd like to hear recommendations for which camcorders send excellent high definition video output via firewire or USB. Do any of these camcorders have the feature of digitizing analog video inputs, again without first recording to tape or hard drive? thanks

My post above has a typo and I meant to use the word "can't" (not can).
If you're trying to capture directly from a camera using a "pass though" you'll need Firewire.
iMovie 7 (part of iLife 08) does support some USB cameras but I doubt it could do a real time HD capture and most of them use MPEG-2 compression to store your file.
You'll need at least a dual 2 GHz processor (G5 or Intel) to even view the files and a direct capture would require the fastest Mac made (even it may drop frames).

  • Camera Brand Recommendations for Ease with iPhoto

    Hi
I'm seeking recommendations for mid-level digital camera brands that have images that are highly compatible with iPhoto.
I'm not a professional photographer.  Just a proud father.
I never felt that my Sony cameras image files were as easy to upload and work with in iPhoto.  I like the look of Samsung cameras, but they state their cameras are designed for being very compatible with Android. So that seems like it will be tedious to use their images in iPhoto.
Anyhow, I'd like to hear good and bad experiences with various camera brands.

Uploading the images from the camera should be the easy part.  When picking a camera to catch the important moments in life of your kids, pick a camera that takes great photos, but has a "point and shoot" feeling. You will want a camera that is ready, when you need it, and not have to look for the manual or changing lenses, when your kid makes the first walking step.
I'd go for a camera with a wide range zoom, auto focus plus manual focus, built-in flash, and menus and controls that are easy to understand and to find.  And I would never buy a camera without a view finder, because the displays are hard to use in bright sunlight in the garden.

  • Recommendations for compact Camcorder / Digital Camera combo?

Now that I'm 2 years into fatherhood, I'm finding that I have specific digital habits for which I'm hoping to get some recommendations for a product. Basically, I use a decent Sony camcorder to shoot DV, which I edit in iMovie into little videos. I also have a few digital cameras (point-and-shoot and SLR) to take a big range of still photographs. But I'm getting tired of carrying them all around with me.
What I'm hoping to get is a new product that's small, has good video capture, and still takes good still photos. And most importantly, I need it to work seamlessly with iMovie and iPhoto. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really just looking for something that I can put in my pocket and shoot video or stills of my son when he does something cute!
    Thanks!

You might want to check out Sony's latest Cyber-shot Digital Camera, the DSC-W300.
It's a point and shoot with video in HD. If you have a nice HDTV, you'll be able to playback the footage easily. I don't know the size of the file for importing into iMovie but your memories will look great.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?
