Can a network/mobile user have a unique dock on each of the Macs on our network?
I just set up a network user on my 10.6 server. The user logged into a new mac mini (10.7 client), and the whole network user thing seems to work. Everything is the same between logging in directly on the server and logging in on the client. Create a folder on the desktop, it shows up on the other Mac, etc.
However, the Dock is the same between the 2 Macs too, but the paths to the various apps (and even the variety of apps) is differnet between the different Macs. How can we configure the Dock to be unique on each Mac?
I ended up doing something similar, but I didn't want to be responsible for my son's Dock. So, I set a different Managed Preference for "Mobility". I added "com.apple.dock.plist" to the list of Excluded files. Now the Docks won't sync back to the Open Directory master account, so there can be a different Dock on every Mac for this user. I'd have to repeat that for other users too.

I've got the same quandary.
After upgrading my hard drive to a Momentus XT Hybrid and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion, I was surprised that I couldn't format partitions separately and then restore from my clone of the old Windows 7 Partition. I found that I had to use the BootCamp Assistant to manage it all, which essentially meant getting rid of the partitions and starting again...
I now can't get my Windows / BootCamp partition to boot, after adding a 3rd, ExFat, partition, when it was working perfectly fine before. I just get a lot of dos booting failures and a final message that "No boot device is available, press Enter to continue".
See the attached message, that I get when trying to boot the bootcamp partition, through Parallels 7; which also worked perfectly fine before.
Be good to know if there is a work around this in Mountain Lion as, if not, I'm thinking I might skip Bootcamp altogether and just install a machine drive via Parallels. As suggested here:

I might even keep the virtual windows machine on a separate hard drive and then I'll have no need for the ExFat partitions altogether as that was designated for sharing between Windows and Mac. -
How to create a unique file name each time the form is saved?
I've got a form with several data items. When the user saves the form, it saves it as an .xml file. So far so good. But then I want the user to be able to start over and put in a new data set. I used the reset form button and this clears out the old data. But when the user goes to save the form for the second set of data, the default name of the .xml file is the same as the last record set. How do I get LCD to create a unique data name each time the form is saved? I know that the user can enter a new name, but I do not want them to have to think that much.
Alternatively, is there a way that a user can enter several forms of data and save all of the data in one XML file that my PDF can scroll through or that I can import into excel and keep all of the data sets separate?Thanks Paul for the post. It sounds like this program is simply not designed for one user to keypunch a batch of forms. It would appear to limit the program's use to users who only need to key in one record/form. While a good solution for multiple users who need to enter just one set of data, the limitation would explain why this program is not widely used.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini. I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk. I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini. I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

Thanks for your quick response. I should add....it worked before. When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac. Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed. I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD. SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac,especially where I could open it previously. I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc. The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents. I just want to be able to see them in the finder. I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents. Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
Any additional advice?

Why can't I open an email attachment on my mac? The attachment comes as a .numbers doc on my ipad and iphone and I can open it easily but it comes as a .zip file on the mac and cannot open it. Why???
What happens if you copy the zip file yo your Desktop and double click or control - click on it? Does it open?

My computer struggles to log in. I have to shut it down each time the computer has been shut and asleep for a few hours. The first day it happened my desktop photo was reset.

AD mobile users have no permisssions when not connected to network
I am the IT Manager in a Windows Server 2003 shop using Active Directory. I am trying to integrate a MacBook just purchased with Leopard 10.5.2. The computer is sucessfully bound to the AD domain. I created a local user account on the machine, and while connected to the company network, an active directory user. When the AD user logs in and the machine is connected to the company network, all is fine: the user's home directory is automatically connected and all application prefs and local folders are available.
However, when away from the company network, loging in with the mobile user's credentials gets a desktop, but no permissions to that user's own local folders:no Dock prefs, no documents folder, no downloads folder, no nothing. Only internet access if a connection is available. Suppossedly credentials are cached on the MacBook, as that option was selected when I created the account. Is this behavior correct?

It would be nice if deployJava.js checked if the java install was adequate, and if not then went out to the network to get instructions on what to do next. It is too hard for me to tell what is going on in the whitespaced-stripped file however. Can Users have their unique Form Settings for the List of Items (Item Search)?
When any user add and remove columns for the List of Items (Item Search) via Form Settings, these changes are automatically updated for all SAP users.
Is there any way we that each user have their own unique List of Items form settings?

Form Setting of Item Master Data will apply for all Users.
For all Users different Form Settings not Possible but you can guide your users to see while Searching Master Data.

How can you tell what users have which reports open in Infoview

In Crystal Server XI, is there any way that you can see what reports are currently being viewed in Infoview and by what user? Or a history of how many times a report has been viewed so that I can tell which reports are not used that often and maybe adjust the schedule or get rid of them.

The method to track the information you are seeking is called Auditor. Auditor is either installed at server software initialization or the install can be performed after you're deployed by re-installing the software and choosing only the Auditor piece. It is best to study the guide (xir2_bip_auditor_en.pdf) prior to launching out on this endeavor.

For some of our Mac users using AD for authentication, there is a 1-2 minute delay between entering their credentials and the OS being presented. The OS does not present itself until the user dismisses the alert: "There was a problem connecting to server home".Local users on the same machines do not have that problem.
It remains in the dock as User's Network Home as a ? that I am unable to remove, and there is also a 'Unknown' in the log-in items for the user as well (that I am also unable to remove).

If you are doing the INSERT during runtime from a form first
create a sequence in SQL PLUS to handle the ORD_NO value:

and reference it as the ORD_NO parameter in your INSERT
statement:
ORDERNO_UNIQUEVAL_sqnc.NEXTVAL
note: to maintain data integrity you must use the sequence

WITH" value you want.

a wpp.targets file to set permissions for the deployed folders. I am wondering if there are commands that can be added to the wpp.targets file in order to deploy a file that resides outside of the package build and is created from scripts

I can't get my pc to see the printer connected to the time capsule, it sees and connect to the network but will not see the printer. The mac in the office see both the network and the printer connected to the capsule.
Suggest that you check to make sure that you installed Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 on the PC.
Run the program and hopefully it will find your printer so you can select it and click to get things going. -
We recently had to have our mac serviced and restored. The hard drive was corrupted from an update. The mac has been restored but we no longer have iPhoto. The only option I see at Apple support is to purchase it again. Is there a way I can get it back free of charge, since we already paid for it?
You should be able to to to the App Store and download it again for free. If often will show a price but when clicked on will revert to Installing and not cost you.

Why do we still have no pro-grade email app for the mac platform?
This is a combination of a question and a rant, I suppose. When I first came to the Mac platform back in 2003, I looked to see what the best email clients were and was surprised to find nothing that I thought was really strong. I started with Mail, hated it, switched to Entourage, and then since that time I've used or demoed about everything I can find. Powermail, Eudora, Mailsmith in years past, and more recently Postbox and Sparrow. I find all of them sorely lacking and it just keeps begging the question in my mind: why hasn't anyone yet created a truly professional-grade email application? I honestly think there's a huge market for it, and I think a lot of people would be willing to spend $30-50 for an app that got it right.
Right now, I use Mail with the add-ons MailTags and Mail Act-On, and I've got my workflows and practices down to a pretty tight level. I am an adherent of inbox zero concepts/GTD and I practice them. Like many of you I get a lot of email, probably 200-300 per day. There is no application I use on my computer more intensively than email, and yet it's the one app that is probably the most lacking from a development standpoint.
here are some of the things I'd love to see:
- support for IMAP, POP3 and Exchange
- an attractive, Mac-like user interface. Could Mail get any uglier? Why yes, yes it could, we now have Mail in Lion! Holy crap, were they incentivized to make it as dull and unattractive an app as they possibly could? If so, that team must be getting huge bonuses this christmastime.
- industry compliant tagging
- robust search functionality. Let me do quick spotlight-based searches, or give me a search dialogue box where I can construct more complex queries.
- robust smart folder functionality. Mail does ok here, but it could be a lot better.
- global rules (which Mail has but an app like Postbox doesn't), and then the ability to either have the rules applied automatically to all messages, or to fire a rule "on-demand" with respect to a single selected email (in other words, build in Mail Act-On functionality)
- integration with social media. Postbox does a nice job with this. Hit their info pane button and you see a nice summary of all the links and possible social media interactions available via that selected email
- integration with cloud-based file storage, and apps like Evernote, DevonThink, Omnifocus, etc
- an intuitive, flexible layout that allows me to see my accounts and folder structures the way I want to see them, not the way the app forces me to lay them out. Mail does a much better job of this than Postbox, for example.
- integration with industry-standard archival practices. For example, integrate with MailSteward.
Mail is honestly not that far away, but they've been "not that far away" for the last 8 years I've been using a Mac. I keep thinking SOMEBODY has to get this right and step up to fill this need, and nobody does. What I'd really love to see is the OmniGroup (the guys that make fine apps like Omnifocus, Omnigraffle, Omnioutliner, etc...) step up and make "OmniMail". Give me an interface and a user experience I look forward to using, not one I use in spite of the interface. Give me a simple, efficient structure with depth and power under the hood that I can customize and tailor to my workflows.
if any developers read this, I am begging you: create this product. I've read every email app review I can find, visited a ton of blogs, user forums, etc..., and I think there is a huge demand for this kind of an app. If I did such coding, I would take the project on myself, but I'm just a user, not a developer.
Hope it happens someday. From my perspective, it's sorely needed.I agree completely; email applications on the Mac lag (and I agree with the OP's frustration with responses as well).
I also have settled on Mail with Mail ActOn and MailTags; this functionality should be incorporated into the OS. I actually like using Outlook in Win 7 better; it's super easy to connect files, contacts, email and other stuff right from one application. And Win 7 has better preview and tagging built in, better than QuickLook. On the server side we desparately need gmail to use tags, but I don't see that happening. I still prefer the labeling scheme it has over Apple's mail, however. But I also find that it confuses many users (labels vs folders).
There are also other applications that integrate email functionality, like SOHO Organizer, or Contactizer. Good, but not the email holy grail.
I'd like to see communications built into the Finder or system, which badly needs an overhaul. It hasn't changed much since the 90's and shows it. Communication, whether it be email, tweets, social media posts, sharing, etc, is such an integral function of all work you do on a computer it should be better, um, integrated into all applications. You should be able to send data from any application to others in a variety of formats without having to go into an email application. Sure, you can now do this to a certain extent with either built-in menu items or services, but it's clunky. For example, when you write something you can either "save" and write to disk somewhere, or "export" in a different format, or maybe "email." All of those choices should at least be part of one dialog; it's just as likely you want to email, post, share or tweet what you just wrote, so just having a "save" dialog is way outmoded.
So, yeah, somebody get on this.
